  1. i don't think i ever go from 0 to blind with rage as fast as when i see people seriously arguing that the guy in the tapestry in botw is ganondorf

it's basically meaningless so i really shouldn't care but it's just so stupid

(it is ganondorf and they'll explain it in the second game)

Guy in the tapestry? Like, the three characters in the middle are Link, Zelda and Ganon, right? What am I missing here?

some people think the guy on the right is ganondorf because his hair is red (even though actual red is used for ganon and this is just a slightly reddish brown that also doubles as link and zelda's skin color) and his face looks weird (it's clearly based on link's sprite from zelda 1 so the proportions are weird but it's still recognizable), and then they spin off into some ridiculous theory about how he turned good and was the real hero 10k years before botw despite nothing in botw even remotely supporting that. it's complete nonsense and yet it keeps coming up.

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Christ all I had to do was type "BotW tapestry" into Google images to accidentallyend up on several pages peddling this exact theory. I don't know what you mean by "clearly based on Link's sprite from Zelda 1", cause I'm not seeing that at all. It's just the weird, swirly patterns of the tapestry. Either way, fan theories tend to be absolute crap upwards of 99% of the time. This one certainly is no exception.

    5. Wraith

      Wraith

They were clear in depicting Zelda's features but "The hero" seems far more ambiguous. The only good reasoning I've seen for portraying Link with flowing red/brown hair is that it's supposed to represent the Barbarian armor set in game, but the rest of the colors don't really match that.  The thing they remind me the most of is Urbosa's champion armor.

I don't see the resemblance with any previous sprite Link has had either.

Meanwhile, Ganondorf is hardly referenced at all in BOTW's backstory but this alleged red haired hero in a cloak is referenced constantly. If they aren't one and the same I'll be shocked. A tragic angle would add another dimension to Ganondorf's character in a similar way that the first game's backstory tried to add a dimension to Zelda.

    6. Diogenes

      Diogenes

it's based on his side view attacking sprite, just with the sword held vertically:

      wlSH7Qz.png

the head in particular is nearly a perfect match save for not having a hat (because botw link doesn't wear one), but even then the hair gives a similar silhouette. and the hair/skin color i imagine is just because it would blend in with the background if they used a more accurate color; the gold they use for zelda's hair and magic is already hard enough to see, and botw-link-accurate hair and skin colors are even closer.

plus a section of the tapestry, focused on link and ganon, is used for the splash screen in the wii u version, which wouldn't make sense to use as a representation of the game if it's actually meant to be ganondorf. and age of calamity has character icons done up in a similar (though not identical) style with link's having basically the same facial features just less exaggerated. it's just...very clearly meant to be link. whatever they've got planned for ganondorf it's not "he took up the master sword and fought himself and then went evil again".

    7. Wraith

      Wraith

maybe link grew a beard then idk

    8. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Okay, now I see what you mean. That's a neat little Easter Egg/detail/whatever that looks intentional but I'd have never noticed it. Really cool. Anyway, never doubted it was Link to begin with, and now it's doubly clear that it's him. The red hair is stylistic. It's not Ganondorf.

  9. recent news has me thinking about theoretical sonic reboots and whenever i think about rebooting sonic i end up thinking about how he's a weird, kind of uncomfortable mix of man and animal. and i don't mean that he's a talking animal that's obvious i have in fact seen cartoons but like...he's such a civilized animal, that i don't know why he's even an animal anymore. or even, almost, why was he one to start? even if you go back to the beginning when the series had some environmentalist themes, having sonic protect small animals from an avatar of unchecked industrialization, he still wasn't "wild"; he wore sneakers and owned a biplane, and he certainly didn't find them growing on a tree somewhere or trade some berries to a little pig or bird for them. so what is he, in this world? what are any of the characters? are they animals that learned to stand up and talk or basically just a bunch of weird-looking humans? if you had asked me a couple years ago i would've loved to see more things like blaze's world where the anthro characters have their own kingdoms or countries or however they'd want to organize, but now sometimes i think that would be unfulfilling, just replicating the human world only they're all short and furry and the fact that he's sonic "the hedgehog" is hardly more than an aesthetic choice. but then i see reboot concepts trying to push those old environmentalist themes to the forefront and i can't stop thinking about his sneakers, such an iconic and irreplaceable part of his design, but utterly out of place as you try to frame him as a defender of nature from the evils of man. so if neither of these, then what? how do you write these characters, both as individuals and as a "species", to believably have a foot in both worlds? as much as i turn the idea over in my head i've never found a satisfying answer, and it gnaws at me.

    in conclusion:

  11. hmm. i was vaguely considering getting immortals fenyx rising in the hopes of it scratching a botw-ish itch, but after a couple minutes with the demo...it is extremely not that. it may be a good game for all i know but being dumped into things with a million icons and abilities i have no context for while people i don't care about babble about things i don't care about...well, it'd take an effort to make a worse first impression. admittedly i went into botw actually knowing some things about it but it still did a much, much better job of letting you build up your understanding of the game naturally, instead of feeling like you forgot to study for a test in a class you never even went to.

  19. damn did i pick a hell of a time to replay hyrule warriors or what

feeling super hyped for this already, wanna go murder 1000 dudes and learn more about botw's hyrule before it got wrecked

i am wondering what the playable cast is going to look like though. i'm sure they won't be doing crazy time shenanigans for the main story again, so will it just be link, zelda, and the champions in story mode? outside of that are they going to port over/rework characters from the first, and/or add new ones, or are they going to keep it more modestly sized and focused on botw?

    1. Wraith

      Wraith

focus seems to be on reusing as much content as they can so i'd expect any character that already existed in BOTW

even if they weren't actually alive yet that shouldn't stop them from being playable in whatever mission modes this has

botw style versions of iconic characters would be cool to see but im not expecting it.

    2. KHCast

      KHCast

That’s what I’m wondering. Persona 5 Scramble taught me basically not to always expect from KT a huge robust cast, so similar could be happening here as well, having a more condensed character roster while focusing on fleshing out everything else about the game to make up for it

    3. JezMM

      JezMM

Would make sense to only have the canon characters playable on your first time through the story, but have unlockables for replaying stages.  I'd definitely like to see some favourite characters as unlockables who weren't around 100 years ago, like Paya and the present-day family of the champions that help you get into the divine beasts (can you imagine the outrage if Sidon wasn't playable, c'mon).  Hopefully they don't save ALL the cool stuff for paid DLC, mind.

yeah i mean the pandemic is the obvious reason why, it's hard to really fault anyone. doesn't make it any easier to be a fan, but hey, less mario games is definitely one of the less serious problems out there these days

  21. just finished replaying sticker star. honestly? i can't really call it a good game, but i still had some solid fun with it. its biggest problem is just that it doesn't communicate well, leading to a lot of running around and wasting time. no indication of what thing stickers you need and when, inconsistent indications that you need to paperize and place a sticker or pull something off, hidden blocks that are necessary to progress but have no indication of their existence...it gets to the point where you really ought to play with a guide nearby to save yourself the trouble.

that and a few other issues aside though, it has its moments. some fun setpieces, some clever puzzles, the battle system's mostly fine. there are worse ways i could've spent my time.

    1. Your Vest Friend

      Your Vest Friend

Eh, I didn't really like it. Not because it wasn't classic Paper Mario, I just thought it got too boring around the third chapter. That fucking forest, man...

    2. Diogenes

      Diogenes

yeah the forest is definitely the low point of the game. decent concept but it drags on for far too long and it's got some of the game's most annoying "tricks".

    3. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

I have no guilt in playing with a guide Many may nag at Nintendo for being a little too hand-holdy with how it guides players through their recent games, but here it just feels like it slaps your hand down at any moment you'd consider lending it out to it. Putting characterization aside, what makes Kertsi fail as a fairy helper when other Nintendo fairy helpers did right, including her own predecessors and successors: She only provides commentary rather than hints, even when the Zelda fairies get very disruptive when they chime in against your will, they're there for advice when you do need it. Asides from basic tutorials towards the begging, Kerti does not even have that. But she's only one of several other ways SS lacks in pointing you in the right direction, never mind forcing you towards it.

      @Your Vest Friend

Even when going blind, I was a little savvy about this. I decided to go through the forest before the desert, so I got exposed to the shit show the game gets known for early on. You have to get to the end of the first world to unlock it, but otherwise most backtracking is limited to the forest world itself. There's no EXP to hold me back from going out of order anyway.

  22. well it's nice to see nintendo hasn't forgotten about pikmin but i was hoping for a new game and not just a port of 3...not sure i can justify buying it twice for just a few conveniences and extras.
