  1. Tbh I could actually see Shadow easily being mistaken for Sonic in-universe, BUT, only if he or both of them are in a dark room/ dimly-lit environment, but most of the time though, you just see them in bright or well lit areas so it just makes the surrounding people look stupid if they mistake Sonic for Shadow or vice versa. Also, controversial as the 4kids cast was, I think that Sonic and Shadow sharing a voice actor was a pretty smart call as well, as it only helped to sell how you could confuse the two even more, like if they were in said dark environment and they both started speaking to you at the same time.

the whole thing of people mistaking shadow for sonic is kind of weird; they presumably wrote that plot point in before shadow's design was finalized, because a lot of his early concept art looks a lot more like sonic, but they took the design in a different direction and just...left that in.

it's probably for the best that he looks more unique but it makes it a bit harder to buy into that part of the story

  2. Okay, so I'm playing Colours for the first time in forever. Emulating it via Dolphin for the sake of practicality and to run it at a higher resolution, but I'm not using any mods.

My thoughts are so far as follows...

Tropical Resort is kind of bad. Of the six acts, only 2 or 3 feel like proper levels and the rest are tedious platforming gimmicks or absurdly easy. Who thought that standing on switches to slowly move platforms was fun? Hunting for Red Rings is nice though. Unlike in Generations and Forces, I kinda feel like they're in sensible places here. Hidden, but findable. The 'proper' full length acts in Tropical Resort are more bland and forgettable than they are offensively bad. In any other game, you'd expect them to be a part of the optional tutorial. Also, the first boss is pathetic and went down in two hits.

Sweet Mountain is genuinely fun. I'm only up to Act 4, which is the first gimmicky act in the zone and involves a lot of "standing on switches and waiting". The zone as a whole is just enjoyable. Simple, but enjoyable. Pleasantly surprised. Even though there's a lot of 2D, the levels are fairly well designed.

Sonic's movement in this game feels off. Something about the way Sonic carries momentum and the way that he turns (or rather doesn't when he's in the air) takes a lot of getting used to. The double jump helps considerably, but it feels like the double jump was added as a band-aid instead of solving the underlying issue. And at least it does something, unlike in Forces. Quick-stepping with the analogue stick is dumb. If the Wii didn't have enough buttons for it, it shouldn't have been included.

Graphics are awesome. Yes, it's a Wii game, but this is probably one of the best looking Sonic games to date. Collectively, Unleashed and Colours really nail how Sonic games should look, each doing their own thing with regards to realistic and fantasy locations. Just for the record, Generations isn't far behind.

Cutscenes and story are bad, not just from a dialogue point of view but also fro the view that just about nothing happens in any of them. Stand and talk, stand and talk, stand and make bad jokes, stand and talk...

  3. ...I just realized the irony that so many people see Sonic as a "cartoon blue hedgehog for kids" when he was initially marketed as a hip and cool alternative to the "kid friendly" Mario. Times sure change.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i mean it's all relative, sonic can be edgier than mario while still being designed for kids

"we're cooler than that lame kiddy stuff" is an appeal to kids who don't want to be seen as just kids, after all.

  4. Sonic Colours is a waste of good music and good art.

  5. Might make a topic about cast oversaturation in this series and how it can be addressed.

But I'll do that next week.

  6. I wonder what kind of game sonic himself would develop?

  7. What if we got a Sonic game that wasnt bad?

  8. If they end up doing a Zelda Maker, what eras/games do you want them to do? Obviously Zelda 1 and ALTTP are guaranteed if they do it, but after that?

Personally for me, it’d be interesting if they do what they did with Mario 3D World in MM2, translating a 3D games mechanics into 2D. Question is, how would that work? Like if they translated Ocarina of Time or BotW style into over-the-head or something.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

minish cap and albw. la remake would also be acceptable, but considering it already had framerate issues, they might shy away from trying to replicate and optimize it for a game where people will put 30 octoroks in every room.

i'm not sure trying to translate one of the 3d games into top-down would work well; they could just do the art style and be done with it, but beyond that, i think the change in perspective is more significant for zelda than mario (especially given they went with 3d world, the most 2d-esque style of 3d mario) and you couldn't really capture the feel of the 3d games in a top-down style.

  9. How are you guys gonna say that Unleashed was the last time SEGA tried with a sonic game when Generations exists? Yeah Planet Wisp, the last set of missions, Silver and Egg Dragoon were average bosses and the Time eater is dog shit and holy crap how did they even think that was a good idea-but it was still a great game once you get past that the last 30 mins.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

generations is a game that was afraid to be unleashed instead of aspiring to be better than unleashed

and there's only like 15 minutes of decent gameplay in it, if that

  10. how you gonna be the most technically impressive modern game and have the tightest gameplay and have the best OST on the first try

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

all you gotta do to be pretty is sacrifice most of the actual gameplay

...and then in some later games they can't even get that much right

  11. So...this has always kind of confused me but...

Does Unleashed qualify as an "Dreamcast game" or a "Modern game"?

Gameplay wise, it has more in common with the modern games, but story and presentation wise, it has more in common with the Dreamcast games.

People always use 06 and Colors as the dividing line, but Unleashed is kind of overlooked here.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

unleashed simply doesn't fit cleanly into either category. it's a transitional fossil, and it's fine to just leave it at that instead of trying to force it into one or the other.

  12. I was absent minded while scrolling through the sewage that is Twitter and registered something.

A claim that nobody calls out in anger when a male character is altered due to censorship reasons and everyone complains when it happens to females.

    ….

20 minutes later, it hit me. Censorship doesn't happen to male characters!? Am I wrong in this? I honestly can't recall if a male character has ever been altered for a different region over some such thing...

Can anyone else think of some?

  13. its crazy how the main Egg Fleet ship is several times larger than the Egg Carrier yet never gets as much recognition. Guess thats an important lesson in how something is framed, given that the Egg Carrier was given lots of cutscene/ plot importance, while the Egg Fleet ship was just a stage/ boss arena/ backdrop so it felt smaller even though it was larger. This also extends to Colors in a sense, taking place on like five planets vs Unleashed which only took place on one, yet Colors still felt smaller despite that.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

I mean Color's planets are meant to be, like, micro-planets or something

  14. Alright if SEGA had the idea to revisit a sonic spinoff and made a good and polished experience which would you choose?

  15. Fine I'll admit. When I first played Shadow the Hedgehog, I thought that scene with Sonic falling all beaten up and weak while Shadow stands behind him holding a fucking 9mm was cool as hell.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

yeah except the only way they show them as something sonic can't handle is magical plot gas, which is pretty lame.

  17. I've honestly never gotten why people think fur colored arms for Sonic don't work when basically all the characters in the franchise except some rare exceptions have, well, fur colored arms. They all look fine.

So why is it an issue for Sonic except for "The change is really unnecessary"? Is there some art aspect I'm not getting?

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i don't consider it to be the biggest of issues, but the change after so many years of tan-arms sonic just looks...off. it's a little mental stumble over something you didn't expect to be there. taking the design entirely on its own, i don't think it's "wrong", but i wouldn't dismiss the "it's unnecessary" argument; if you're going to change something you should have a reason for it, and I honestly can't think of any benefit in changing his arm color. If they're entirely equal, changing it just introduces confusion.

  19. I swear, this fanbase hates any idea that is deemed a "failure" and shows a stubborn unwillingness in actually trying to salvage older ideas. It was "bad", so it's gotta be thrown out for a new idea. It's like buying a new sports car every time the old one no longer works.

    1. Diogenes

One is a character, the other is not. I don't really care how much you hate Infinite; the fact remains that he has a character that can be described with more one sentence and thus, is more likely to be remembered by the audience.

The only reason people even remember the Deadly Six is because Sega keeps shoving them in every game in a desperate attempt to get people to care about them.

and i don't care if you define him as being more of a character; he's a disaster from start to finish, just as much an empty cliche as any of the d6, just desperately pretending to be more. he is "shth using gunshots as a menu confirmation sound" in character form.

  21. I'm gonna say something twisted. Infinite had potential to be great, whereas the Zeti didn't have any from the looks of it, but Infinite came from a promising story that tried actual character arcs. The Zeti came from the worst written story ever. I'm not implying Forces is a good game, not even close. Infinite failed spectacularly. Anyway IMO the Deadly Six are the victims of episodic cutscenes that seem to be reboots each time, shitty jokes and overcrowding for boss fodder, they have plenty of issues, but I would give them another shot at screentime besides the comics. What bugs me the most that not even IDW is doing, they are a fucking team, esplore their dynamic, make them interact, could be entertaining. Infinite did a worse job with more resources.

Infinite, for better or worse, is the first time in a long time that a character has attempted some level of pathos rather than just serving a function as a video game boss.

i will gladly take "just there to be a boss" over the "pathos" of "evilevilevilevilevil i'm scared because i got beat up 😢 evilevilevilevil"
