  1. i will never understand some sonic fans. why do some think 06 is not canon. its just as canon as unleashed

      Diogenes

it's canon but it also unhappens so most of it doesn't apply.

  2. Just curious, which Sonic game has your favourite character 3D models/designs?

pretty much any modern sonic game from unleashed on is...fine, i guess. i'm not really concerned with the differences between them, they all look pretty much the same, and they're...fine. but i do still feel like there's something missing, there's not really a "spark" to them. maybe it's just because they've stuck with basically the same look for so long, i don't know.

sa2 also isn't too bad. it's a bit hard to go back to something so low-poly but in spite of that some characters hold up better than some of their later models. it's one of the last times that the hedgehogs' spikes have looked properly sharp and spiky, for one.

  3. I don't care much for either the Deadly Six or Infinite. But I feel like the latter fits into the aesthetic of the series better.

There's just...nothing to care about with the Deadly Six unless you just really want more villains no matter what.

There's a story with Infinite; a very badly told one, but its there. There's nothing to the Six, they're just boss fodder for the sake of a video game boss fight

If you don't agree fine, I'm just making a point; you acknowledge that people care more about Infinite than they do the Deadly Six in spite of their issues.

You should give a bit more thought on why that's the case beyond "lol Sonic fans have shit taste" to justify opinions that don't align with yours.

alright, they have bad taste and they're furries

They were very blatantly trying to hype up the Deadly Six as the next thing, there's literally no way you can deny that. They're all over the advertising of Lost World, they're on the front of the box art, and while it's limited to Zavok, keep showing up in subsequent media.

they were a bit overhyped in the advertising but in the game itself they're simply not presented in the same way as infinite or mephiles or black doom or...whoever. lost world doesn't go into their backstory or deep into their motivations because they're not really the point. And I still don't think infinite's conflicting and hole-riddled origins or his absolute paper-thin motivation do anything to put him above them. hell the zeti taking over eggman's shit as revenge is already a better, clearer motivation than infinite's "i got beat up so now i'm gonna be extra edgy" anyway.

      Quote

Zavok was in Team Sonic Racing, while Cream, Espio, and Charmy were not. That should tell you right there where Sega's priorities are. They're trying to push him as a major figure, but haven't addressed the fundamental problem with him.

They needed another villain for the villain team, meanwhile they had an overabundance of heroes for the hero teams. I think you're overestimating how much importance they've given him.

      Quote

People pretty clearly care about Infinite because he has an actual story surrounding him, otherwise they wouldn't be asking for him to make a return.

sounds like a way to get more garbage

The Sonic series has always tried to give its characters more gravitas and importance, as far back as Tails in the second game; does it always stick the landing when it tries that? No. But there's an attempt at trying to make these characters into more than generic video game props.

And I'm not saying they shouldn't, but they have to actually write and portray the character in a way that the audience buys into it, or it backfires. forces is like if someone wrote fanfiction and put their shitty oc in it just expecting everyone to be as enamored with them as they are; despite the volume of attention given to infinite nothing about it makes me give a shit, he's just an overpowered edgelord with a backstory that barely makes sense, and the more they tried to push him as a big deal the less i cared because it was all just smoke and mirrors. the d6 at least are presented as more in line with how they actually are, just a bunch of asshole monsters, unpretentious wacky bad guys; they, for the most part, deliver on what they promise.

and i'm not saying the d6 are the way every sonic character should be handled, just that it's okay for not everything to be hyped up as the hottest shit, that you can have your nack the weasels and your babylon rogues and your rough and tumbles and they can be important and worthwhile characters, and that's better than a character who's all hype and no substance no matter how much you want the hype to be real.

i still feel the opposite. there's not much to the d6, sure, but a bunch of weird troublemaking assholes isn't the worst thing for a series to have on hand. infinite, on the other hand, is just such a disaster of a character, no less shallow than the d6 but given an unearned sense of gravitas and more details that don't actually add anything of value.

  7. If Eggman can just instantly make Infinites with the Phantom Ruby, then why was he growing Infinites in tubes in a lab?

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

they way i interpret it, the episode shadow backstory is real, infinite was originally just a normal jackal. but after getting his ass beat, his need for power and control led him to agree to let eggman experiment on him. this involves the flesh-and-blood jackal ceasing to exist and his essence/soul/consciousness/whatever coalescing around the phantom ruby prototypes, creating a new "virtual" body that can better harness the ruby's powers and doesn't have all those mortal weaknesses. the other tube cubes are failures to bond the two properly or just undercooked.

  8. While Sonic Team tend to cling to anything that's positively received with Sonic like their life depends on it, it really is baffling trying to figure out why the zeti have been brought back so many times. When Lost World was a kind of a flop, and they aren't particularly well liked characters either.

I wonder what ST sees in them.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

sonic has a serious dearth of recurring villains. they all either die, convert to good (or at least to mutually respectful rivals), or are connected to eggman. remember how forces' big scary rogues gallery amounted to a new villain, metal sonic, two characters who hadn't been bad guys in ages, and zavok.

they spent time creating villains they could actually reuse and they seem intent on getting their effort's worth out of them regardless of their lack of popularity.

  9. Can someone explain why An Adventure remake wouldn't work with the Boost formula?

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

because then it'd be a boost game, not an adventure game

    2. (See 3 other replies to this status update)

  10. Colors remaster could be a sorta farewell to the boost saga that forces failed to be. Then, after the remaster releases, Sega announces a brand new sonic game with a better gameplay style. Then again, Sonic lost World happened in the middle of it all so that would be a weird case.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

it would be nice for the boost gameplay to finally die. but i'm not sure sonic team is willing to kill it, even after forces. i'm not sure they know how to do anything else, or are willing to try after retreating back to it after lost world.

  11. I am genuinely curious to see how the reception towards colors remastered will be from both fans, critics and casuals alike.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i imagine it'll get an overall modestly positive reception and not really change much of anything.

anyone who's going to have a strong reaction about colors of all games has already decided how they feel.

  12. how about a "hard" mode that makes the bosses take more than two hits

like they're so easy i can't even enjoy the kickikn' tunes

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

it was really only the two ferris wheel bosses that were oddly short. they want to add another hit or two to those that'd be fine but the rest don't need it.

  13. You know, for the most part, it doesn't seem like people are actually upset about Sonic Colors getting a remaster.

But rather, why did they decide to remaster just ONE game as opposed to all of the games on the 7th Generation.

Generations is on PC, so that's excusable, but Unleashed isn't...

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

colors is simple and relatively uncontroversial. unleashed has the werehog.

  14. 10/10 level design and engaging gameplay. Creative use of all of Sonic's unique abilities to create an interesting platformer with high speed gameplay. Can't wait for this in HD

I don't dislike Colours. But it's got some pretty naff levels never worth playing.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i dunno, i think there's a way it can work. i mean, i haven't been following the project so maybe it comes off differently elsewhere but from this trailer i don't really get the vibe that we're supposed to agree with her. more that she gets pushed to her breaking point, and then it's about two terrible people trying to destroy each other. a story about monsters birthing monsters, not an attempt to redeem or justify her. can't say for sure that's what they're going for though, or if they'll stick the landing if they are.

  16. Dreading the inevitable reveal of the next sonic game that shows zero gameplay footage after all this time and gives no detail into how the game could possibly play.

Worst case we get sonic doing a slide in the cg trailer and there'll be more boost gameplay paranoia.

  17. I'll just post "The new Sonic game will be revealed this week" every week and I'll be right eventually

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

save some time; "the next sonic game will be revealed" is just as true, but shorter and only needs to be said once

  18.    I know this comes down to personal taste, but for me what makes a bad Sonic Zone isn't necessarily hard layouts, water or weird gimmicks on their own, but in what ways the zone can be tackled on repeat playthroughs. Everyone's first time through Labyrinth is going to suck, but if you stick to it and learn the level eventually you can carve a path to get through without having to put up with it (both acts 1 and 3 have shortcuts that bypass most of the levels).

Then there are zones like Wacky Workbench or Oil Ocean where no matter how much time you put into them you always have to deal with their crap. You will never be able to avoid getting bounced to the moon or dealing with a zone with so many paths through the blend together and you can never tell where the heck you're going.

Oil Ocean followed up with Metropolis ( a half and half case, one can get a good groove going through the layout but the badniks, well you know how they are) are one of two reasons Sonic 2 is my least favorite of the original quartet. In comparison once you take the time to learn them Labyrinth and Carnival Night become non issues, and while Wacky Workbench is indeed worse then both the Sonic 2 zones the other six zones make up for it in my book. The other reason I like Sonic 2 the least are the Special Stages. They may look cool but between the slippery control needing either super reflexes or spot on memory I find them the weakest of the classic Special Stages.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i can get most of that but i feel like if the "solution" to labyrinth sucking is that there's shortcuts to skip most of it, that's still just labyrinth sucking.

    2. (See 11 other replies to this status update)

  19. i genuinely hate metropolis zone with all of my being

not only is it the worst zone in the entire mega drive line up, not only is it frustrating as fuck no matter how well you know the level, but it also signifies the drop off in quality for the rest of sonic 2

  20. Can we finally admit that Boom was meant to be more than just a spin-off?

  22. At this point wouldn't it be better if fans themselves tried remaking Sonic Adventure? They did Sonic 06, Unleashed Day, now someone is reinventing Forces. SEGA should focus on experimenting what they want to do next.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

y'know now that you mention it it is a bit weird that nobody has attempted it yet. this fanbase has so much DIY spirit for everything else they want but Sega won't give, but it feels like effort's gone in every direction except this one common fan demand.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

probably better to start small with a first project. like, very small. no even smaller than that.

  25. It seriously bugs me that were just lot allowed to play S3&K officially in any official capacity because of legal bullshit. Like are we really expected to just accept this is how it will be forever with this game? This masterpiece is just doomed to be lost to time because of music tights. Sega should either settle it with the MJ estate or just change all the offending music because it's kind of ridiculous were just expected to pretend the game doesn't exist anymore. Idk I just hate thinking about it

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

it's dumb and it sucks, sure, but it's not like we can do anything about it and there's still ways to play it so there's no point in dwelling on it.
