    most of my problems with the game still stand and I certainly wouldn't call it the ideal direction for the series, but in practice it honestly works. great aesthetics, the heavy 2d focus and more modest pace allow for far more interesting 2d sections than the other boost games, most of the wisps are used in creative ways, and i still find most of the dialogue fun and refreshing. plus, no obnoxious alternate gameplay padding; just straight sonic from beginning to end.
    there's still some considerable jank in the controls (especially the location-dependent quick step and drift, and quick step being on the control stick), not all of the jokes land (mostly just the translation ones), and it's certainly not a success as a 3d sonic game (though I might argue its 3d is better than forces') but like...best boost game? within the top 10 of all sonic games? that's what I'm feeling right now...

    y'know from time to time i see people say something like "we've already fought eggman/bowser/ganon/whoever a bunch, i'm tired of them, i want a new villain"
    and i'm like, of course we've fought them a bunch, they're the series' main villain. not that i'd oppose having different villains occasionally, but of course the hero's mortal enemy and the biggest instigator of events is going to keep coming back, they're an essential part of the series. are you going to tell me next that you're bored of the same guy always being the hero?
    and then i remember that that's an actual complaint in this fanbase and i just regretfully stare into the distance
