  1. Just announced at comic con Official statement
  2. STAFF NOTE: Because of hiatus/cancellation discussion dominating this thread, a separate topic has been made, so please direct all related posts and thoughts there: I guess I'll be the one to start the new topic for the monthly comic series, and will do that with the latest issue preview. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #198 "Egg Phoenix Down": The countdown to the epic Sonic the Hedgehog #200 continues! Sonic leads the fully assembled Freedom Fighters and Chaotix on an invasion of Dr. Robotnik's city, but the doctor unleashes a terrifying new weapon that may make their fight a short one! Don't miss all the egg-plosive action! SCRIPT: Ian Flynn ART: Renae De Liz Scorching hot cover by Tracy Yardley! Shipping Date: March 4th, 2009 On Sale at Comic Specialty Shops: March 11th, 2009 On Sale on Newsstands: March 24th, 2009 32-page, full color comic $2.50 US
  3. So, there's been a lot of talk lately about whether or not the Freedom Fighters from the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic books should come into the IDW comics. For those of you who don't know who the Freedom Fighters are, they were basically characters who came from the Sonic SATAM cartoon series that came out in the 1990s and they made their way into the Archie Comics in the 1990s. For me on the one hand, I honestly don't mind the IDW comics being in a separate universe and staying much more closely to the games. On the other hand, I grew up watching Sonic SATAM and reading the Archie Comics, so I do miss the Freedom Fighters themselves and maybe there is a way that they could come into the IDW comics without being too in your face with the readers. What do you think? Do you want to see the Freedom Fighters enter the IDW comics or are you okay with the Freedom Fighters not being in the IDW comics?
  4. So, SEGA had set up a few mandates for the IDW comics that had caused some controversy for the writers and the fans alike. Here are some of the mandates they have set up for the comics: Game characters cannot have relatives unless they were established in the game canon, i.e. Cream and her mother Game characters can not die. Sonic can't be shown getting too emotional (i.e;cry). Game characters cannot enter in a relationship. Amy must always be in love with just Sonic but they can't get together. Much like the post-reboot of the Archie comic, the words "Mobius" is banned—the planet is simply called "Sonic's World". Sonic must always win at the end. Characters and material from other licensed properties Sonic the Comic, Archie Sonic, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic SATAM, Sonic Underground, Sonic X and the Sonic Movie cannot be used. According to Ian Flynn, a specific incident involving Shadow's characterization when he's exposed to the Zombot infection was written in a specific way because of Sega mandating that he be written as an "overconfident asshole rival" character, similar to Vegeta. He later followed up with an explanation that out of every character, Shadow has the most mandates and notes attached to how he's portrayed. Sega has stated to Flynn that only male hedgehogs are allowed to go Super with the Chaos Emeralds. Sega says that Team Dark is no longer a thing. It has been stated that there is no money in Sonic's World, and that anything that alludes to money (such as Rings acting as currency) is strictly forbidden. Knuckles is not allowed to leave Angel Island unless he has a very good reason to. So, here are my thoughts on some of the mandates. Regarding the mandate about Sonic not getting too emotional, I can actually get by that since there are other ways that Sonic can still get emotional without crying, as the Metal Virus Arc has shown. Also, I'm okay with the characters not dying since you don't really need anybody to die to make the story more interesting. And in regards to not using characters from other licensed properties, I have a feeling that SEGA is slowly letting up on that mandate since Honey that Badger did show up in the IDW comics and they are planning on making a comic book series based off the movies. The only mandates I have issues with is how Shadow is being portrayed and that Team Dark is no longer a thing. I feel like these mandates are only slowing down Shadow's character and it's making it harder to write his character if there's nothing to back his character up with. So, I'm wondering if SEGA will eventually change some of these mandates, especially if they are getting in the way of the story telling for the comics? I have a feeling that they will eventually have to tone down the mandates for Shadow if they want the writers to include him into the stories.
  5. You smell that? It smells like...trouble... That's no good.
  6. Hey everyone! I'm Rabbitearsblog and in this thread, I talk about my personal thoughts about the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comic book series as I read each issue / collection and give out my thoughts on each issue. Now, the reason why I wanted to make a separate thread about this is because I'm way behind in the IDW comics and I didn't want to slow down the main threads discussing this series with me just talking about the older issues, even though we are 40 issues in now. If you want to talk about the current issues from the IDW series, then check out the IDW Megathread. But now, let's get started! Sonic the Hedgehog IDW: Issue #1 *Originally, I was going to review each collection of the Sonic IDW series. But, I realized that in doing so, it would keep this thread dormant due to having to wait months just for a new collection to come out. So, I decided to review it issue by issue instead to keep the thread going. So, let's talk about my thoughts about the first issue of this series. Now, if there was a problem that I had with this issue, is that I felt that the world could have been developed a bit better. If this is a reboot of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, then we need to know more about how things work in Sonic's world or heck, just give us a name for Sonic's world! For years now, SEGA has been pretty insistent on not really developing Sonic's world and it's painfully obvious in this comic book series. If you are new to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise or you never played "Sonic Forces," chances are you will be totally lost on what's going on in this issue and you will probably be wondering about how Dr. Eggman even took over the world in the first place. Overall, I really enjoyed this issue. Even though I wished that they developed Sonic's world a bit more, I found this issue to be a really fun read and I loved the fact that they managed to address some of the more controversial moments from "Sonic Forces" and fix them. So far, this is a pretty good start to IDW comics and I can't wait to dive into the second issue of this series!
  7. What are some mandates that SEGA has for the characters or for the stories that you don't agree with or you wish that they changed? While these mandates are mostly related to the IDW comics, here are a few mandates that SEGA did with the characters and stories that I don't agree with: Regarding Shadow's characterization, I don't like the fact that SEGA is basically saying that Shadow should always be edgy and moody and not be allowed to express that many emotions. This also extends somewhat to the other characters, like Sonic where they can't be portrayed beyond their main characterizations in the games. The whole "Chao should be known as "it" instead of calling them "him" or "her." This wouldn't be a problem if SEGA had actually done this in the first place and not just make that rule so recently. It just ended up confusing the fanbase about how the chao should be addressed in the series.
  8. Something I've thought about on and off but never really bothered committing to was that it'd be nice to have a central hub discussing Ian Flynn's podcast, the Bumblekast. There's always tidbits and some information that gets out regarding the creation of the comics, his thoughts on them, and it's where we hear about supposed restrictions. This stuff comes up in the comic threads a lot but it gets lost easily, so I figured I'd do something about it. Bear in mind, I don't really listen to it that much and just get the summaries/timestamps from you guys anyway, so I'm probably not the best person to create the thread, but I'll at least offer to give listeners of the show a space to discuss it and I can try to (at least for a while) make bookmarks of info/new episodes for people to see here. And if something needs to be added to the listing, feel free to ping me here and I'll add it when I can. There's also a link to a huge masterlist of previously asked questions that will also be good reference for Archie/IDW discussion. 9. I remembered that some time back, there was this huge initiative to bring Sally Acorn back to the comics and to the franchise as a whole and it was title something like "Rally4Sally." I see that they still have a Twitter account, but is that initiative still going or has it died down?
  10. Shadow is a bit of a hot topic (hehe) in the IDW comic book series right now, so much so that the discussion in the IDW topic always seems to default to him. While that should be allowed, it sometimes overtakes anything else the topic is talking about, and therefore I found it might be useful to create a separate topic for it! Purpose: To lower the amount of lengthy Shadow discussions that tend to flood the original topic, while still providing a place for that discussion because its valid and important. I love Shadow, we all love Shadow, we want whats best for him (or what we think is best, anyway). Rules: Discuss Shadow in IDW. Referencing other media is obviously allowed, because it may be useful to compare, but we're just talking about Shadow here. ALSO: This is a cosmically unimportant debate. No insulting, condescending remarks, ("seriously?" "oh, IM the idiot?" "how can you even think that?) or things of that nature. Remember what you're discussing is really not the end of the world, as important as we Sonic fans find it. Be civil. Otherwise just uh... have fun, if this sorta thing even is fun. Thread theme:

  12. My Top 3 Sonic moments are..... 1.Sonic X Showdown In Space(SA2): This is when Shadow risks everything for the humans to save their world. I remember crying as a kid because I already knew death at a young age but when he came back to the series it was legendary and just in time. 2.Sonic Battle/Emerl: This game was awesome overall for a Gameboy game and the saddest thing was destroying the thing you created. I literally put hours into making him the ultimate fighter and now I had to beat my own creation. 3.Secret Rings/Ending Cutscene Sonic shows us how badass he really is by sending away a genie and saving another. This was so satisfying because I had a lot of difficulty with the motion controls and I made it through. Do you have a top 3 or maybe just one. Either way let me know below
  13. Who is your favorite Mecha/ Metal Sonic? Mecha Sonic (Archie #25) Hyper Metal Sonic (Sonic The Hedgehog Movie, Anime) Mecha Sonic (Knuckles Chaotix) Titan Mecha Sonic Silver Sonic Mecha Sonic (Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Sega Genesis) Mecha Sonic V3 Silver Sonic V2 Mecha Sonic Robian (Sonic The Hedgehog Roboticized, Mecha Madness Comic Special) Neo Metal Sonic (Sonic Heroes) Shard the Hedgehog (Comics) and Etc.
  14. Yep... This'll be a thing now. So, I've been wanting to find something to write recently, but nothing has catched my interest as much as building a sort of comic universe based on a few of my favourite childhood heroes from Marvel. It started out small with me wanting to RP as Spider-man, but I wanted to give him a twist no other story has given him, so I've gone on and created Reverse Spider-man. This gave me the freedom of allowing to build a new story for him as the RP will go on while also sticking to the same concept of our beloved Superhero. That'll be always what I try to do with these stories that I'll create. You are familiar with them, yet you don't know who they really are at the same time. I wanna capture that feeling and make stories that you wouldn't have seen coming at all, and some stories that you think will play out the same as the original comics... only to then give it a twist that changes everything. For this, it'll be sort of like you're reading a comic. I'll describe things as best as I can while trying to make the narration sound like you're hearing from a commercial to hopefully give you an image in your head about what the page would look like. Believe it or not, I actually have a friend working on making a cover for the first issue of Spider-man, so I can't guarantee that there will be covers for every story. Had I been an artist or had the money to commission one I would make every story have it's own cover... More the reason to practice drawing, am I right? Of course, with this... comes a LOT of research I'll have to do, but I think it'll be fun! Hopefully I can gather information to make the best stories that grasp the concept firmly without going against the intentions of the original creators of these characters. This'll be the first volume. A "phase" if you will, like the MCU movies. This Volume will be the introduction to the true believers of how this world looks, and it'll start off with the two heroes I'm most Familiar with and they'll be the only stories running until the end of the first volume. Now while I mostly intend to work on writing most of these by myself, I'm considering collaborating with others that are just as passionate with this as I am to write some characters I'm not familiar with, such as the X-Men, but I do have an idea of what to do with mostly everyone, don't you worry! For now, I wanna hear everyone's thoughts about it. Do you wanna work along me to work on a certain character? Got any questions about something? Maybe even give me a few suggestions on how to make it feel immersive when writing things. I want to turn this project into something fun I can do as a hobby. Anyways, that's all from me, True believers. Tune in on the first Issue of the Reverse Web-Slinger, Spider-man! As he swings into action without experience in his first few days as a superhero, struggling with life as he has three jobs to take care of at the same time, and a cat that he always has to save from a tree. but does he have the skill to be on the top of the hill? We'll see on the first issue of "The Marvelous Spider-man! (Issue #1)" Excelsior.
  15. Amy was "cute and full of energy", as she would call herself in Adventure. But I don't know what she'd call herself nowadays, except "bland". I get trying to have her "mature" (which she was never as bad as people made her out to be in the games imo) but couldn't you have done that without taking her whole personality? She's so boring now. The last time she ever did anything was Unleashed. Nowadays she's just... there. Like I said, I feel like people really exaggerated her crush on Sonic. They saw Sonic X and used that interpretation on everything. Her crush was only emphasized for jokes like in Heroes. People talk about her chasing Sonic but they never talk about her speech to Shadow about how not all humans are bad. Or turned Gamma against Eggman through kind words. Or had a robot chase her throughout the entire story just to protect this bird. And then put the hurt on him when he finally got to it. Amy was a sweet character whose bad side you wouldn't want to get on. If Old Amy was "immature" and New Amy is mature, shoot, give me immaturity any day. Amy used to have been my only problem with the IDW comics. She felt like Sally 2.0 to me. Then someone told me it because she was overworked since she's the only Sonic character besides Knuckles that would be leader. That made alot of sense to me.
  16. Reposted here, I'm currently in the process of rewriting the fan fiction as a script or the first issue, to turn it into a fan comic, so I'm looking for fan artists to join me and draw parts of it, and perhaps more fan writers to co-plot the script, it would be a great project to celebrate Sonic's 30th anniversary as well, so contact me only if you are interested in the plot idea and taking active part in it. A cool "what if" story concept that explores the ideas set up in the Reboot Archie comic. Right now I'm planning a 6 issues short mini-series (or fan fiction if no one is interested) with potential for more season ideas, and includes the concept for redesigning the protagonists. If you want to hear more about the story and details, contact me because there is a lot more. Otherwise, express your opinions on what format I should turn this story into. I'd like it to be told as visual storytelling, rather than fan fiction. I'm aware there isn't much else to showcase at the moment, I'm just asking for help for this cool project, to make it actually happen in a larger way, and hopefully I'll have something more in the future (pun intended).
  17. Rob O' is my favourite character ever. Do you think we will ever see him again?
  18. So, i just got into sonic idw, but its been hard to find issue 1 anywhere for under 20 bucks. Do you guys know a place where i can get issue one.
  19. Earlier this month, IDW released a new Sonic comic as part of this year’s Free Comic Book Day. That comic is now available to download for free from Comixology! You can check it out here. The comic takes place in IDW’s Classic Sonic universe, and largely focuses on Amy Rose as she explores a new hobby. The entire comic is not devoted to this story, however, as the comic also features a recap of the primary IDW Sonic universe, to prepare readers for the road to issue #50. ---------------------- Full story here: https://www.sonicstadium.org/2021/08/sonic-fcbd-issue-now-available-digitally/
  20. So, do you think that the harshest critics of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise hurt the franchise? What I mean by "harshest critics" is that there are some critics who are never satisfied with this franchise and will say nothing but negative things about this franchise, despite overlooking some of the good games in this series. Now, that's not to say that all criticisms against this franchise are unwarranted. There are some pretty valid criticisms against this franchise, like how the gameplay hasn't been that good for the past decade or so or how the stories are not being written that well as of late. And there are times where Sonic Team does listen to the criticisms, but the way they handled the criticisms tended to get bad results like say the fans wanted more comedy for the series, but then Sonic Team don't write the stories very well as a result. Or whenever the fans asked for more gameplay for Sonic, but Sonic Team took that as "only Sonic should be the playable character" despite the fact that fans didn't say that they wanted to get rid of the other characters. However, what about the critics who bashed the series without playing the games first or bash the series before any new games have been released? Wouldn't that cause the fans to not want to play the games just because a critic said that the game is going to be bad, even though there's no concrete evidence about what the game is about yet? Or what about when a critic says that "Sonic has always been a bad franchise" despite the fact that there were some good games that were released in the series? So, do you think that the critics who bashed the series without playing any of the games or who judge the series without any concrete evidence on the developments hurt the franchise?
  21. So, when I say that people insult the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, I mean like how some people say the following things about the franchise: *Sonic was never good. *There are no good Sonic 3D games. How do comments like these make you feel? Do you feel turned off by the franchise because of these comments or do you still stand by the franchise despite the insults being hurled at this franchise? For me personally, I honestly don't care much. Sure, if there are unreasonable comments like "Sonic was never good," then I am quick to point out the hypocrisy of those statements. But, most of the time, I don't let these comments bother me, because at the end of the day, I like what I like and that's all that matters to me. If I love Sonic the Hedgehog, I will constantly make videos and fan art for the character, because I want to show my support for the character, no matter what others say.
  22. So, while the franchise had its ups and downs over the years, it's great to be a bit positive about the franchise and think about some of the things that you do like about the franchise. So, what do you like about the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise? It can be a specific game you liked, the characters you liked, a gameplay style, anything you liked about the games. Here's what I liked about the franchise: I like the fact that Sonic is a free-spirited character who plays by his own rules, but is still willing the save the world whenever he can. It really separated him from other video game characters and his positive personality was quite an inspiration for the audience. I really liked Sonic and Tails' friendship with each other. Even though in recent years, their friendship isn't quite as elaborated on as it once was, it's great to hear that Sonic practically treats Tails like his little brother and it was this aspect of their relationship that I loved the best. I really enjoyed the Sonic Adventure games. I think that they did a fantastic job at expanding more on the Sonic lore, as well as giving us an open world gameplay style that was quite unique to the franchise at the time. I just love how creative the world is. I mean, what other video game franchise have you seen that features a blue talking hedgehog who goes through all of these wacky zones to grab some Chaos Emeralds? The fact that we get to play as Super Sonic in the final level in most of the games is quite a rewarding experience! This is an aspect of the games that I really miss and I wish that the current games incorporate Super Sonic a bit more, as well as getting the Chaos Emeralds back into the games. I really loved the Chao Garden segments in the Adventure games. Not only are the Chao such cute creatures, but I always loved doing side quests in the games. In the older games, I loved the fact that you were able to play multiple characters and not just Sonic. What I miss so much about the Sonic games is being able to play as Tails, Knuckles, Amy and many other characters.
  23. Hi there these are my IDW Sonic Comics Issues 1-36 and latest. I will be updating this thread when I get the latest Issues thanks for looking https://ibb.co/jbHnGD https://ibb.co/p0fc78y
  24. I know Sonic has been portrayed differently in most media all over the world but I wonder if our cultural values and norms affect how he is portrayed?
  25. Over the past 3 decades (it feels weird saying that), our favourite blue hedgehog has had a ton of games and has branched out into all sorts of mediums. Loads of writers have been brought on board over the years, some of whom interpret the characters better than others. That said, which pieces of media do you think have the best and the worst interpretation of your favourite character? I'll start off with the hammer-swinging heroine, Amy Rose! Best: Sonic Adventure. This game really lets every part of Amy's personality shine, from her determination to do what's right to her compassion to, of course, her love for Sonic (although, other than the...questionable lyrics of My Sweet Passion, it's not in your face). At the start of her story, she can barely defend herself but by the end, she's helped a random Flicky find its family, befriended one of Eggman's robots (who she encourages to free himself iirc) and proved herself as one of the strongest members of the cast with her UN-declared weapon of mass destruction Piko Piko Hammer. If her arc in SA1 isn't character development, I don't know what is. Honourable mention: Sonic Heroes. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of that cutscene but other than that, I really like Amy in Heroes. She could've easily went after Sonic herself if she wanted to, but she didn't, instead helping Cream and Big find Chocola and Froggy. Also, she encouraged them not to give up multiple times throughout the game (after defeating the Egg Albatross when "Eggman" turned out to be a fake and they weren't close to finding Chocola and Froggy at all, and when Cream and Big felt scared at Hang Castle). Her optimism made her the backbone of Team Rose. Worst: Sonic Free Riders. I hate this game with a burning passion, and I especially hate how dirty it did Amy. Not only is her Sonic crush dialled up to 11, but she's a complete dick to everyone including Cream - you know, her best friend. A lot of 2000s Sonic media liked to give Amy the "psychotic fangirl" narrative, but at least she's enjoyable in them for the most part; she's extremely unpleasant in Free Riders and is one of the reasons why I never finished it.
