Sonic the Hedgehog Fanfiction

Honestly, I've been thinking about this lately. I've seen so many rants on topics like these on the internet, so I wanted to give it a shot myself. This is really long so prepare yourself. You might want to get a snack as well

I occasionally read Sonic stories on Fanfiction. net, but over half the stuff I've been reading is terrible. Why you may ask? The Sonic characters are completely out of character, the cliched plots, the overload of un-original characters, and lets not forget the the ever so popular Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus. At a time I personally disliked fancharacters mainly because of how un-original they are. The majority of the Fancharacters are overpowered and have cliched backstories, like some characters showing up saying that they are Sonic's long lost brother, sister, mother, or father. And lets not forget Shadow who has so many brothers and sisters named Project [insert-name here]. Heck that goes for all the Sonic characters.

The pairings with official characters and OCs are also where problems start. Mainly with the development between them being too short or none at all. Its like the first time they see each other then BOOM they love each other. Where's the development? There was also a time when I was totally against an OC being paired up with an original character, but if the author can at least have some friendship and a relationship slowly growing between them then its fine. I'm okay with it, but at the same time not for it. Let's just say I'm neutral.

Now the pairings with the official characters are mainly the ones where cliched couple traits are formed for characters. These come from couples being paired with characters that are not mentioned, not hinted upon as much as others, not talking to each other a lot or if they never met. Its fine to pair up characters, but don't flame the author's story just because you hate that story. Just remember not to rush things between two characters. Don't have Sonic suddenly realize he loves Amy just out of the blue, have some development with Sonic for him to truly realize it. Then there's the whole killing characters off because you don't want them to be in your story. Like Shadow, Knuckles, and Amy die for example, and the author decides to pair Rouge and Sonic together because they don't like Sonamy KnuxRouge, or ShadRouge. Why not just leave them out of the story and say there someplace else? And don't have Amy as a total freakin nutcase that doesn't want anyone to have Sonic. Sally gets this the most from SonAmy fans. People hate her and call her all kinds of things like a slut or something. Why? I read some of the Archie comics online, but Sally is far from any of those things. She may be a little bossy, but she seems like a caring person or at least from so much I've read. SonSal fans get so much hate, and its from those people who hate Sally so much. Same goes for SonAmy. Oh and don't have a character be OOC with someone else. Like ShadAmy for example. I severely doubt that Amy would change Shadow into a complete nice guy who thinks of rainbows and gumdrops all day, and smiles constantly all the friggin time. I could understand if he was smiling just for Amy, but with everyone else that would be creepy. Or turning Amy into a wrist cutter, a goth, or emo. Heck why does any character paired up with Shadow has to turn into a goth anyway? And don't have the pairing you support be totally in character, but not have the rest of the cast in character. You take time time doing the couple why not everyone else?

And lets not forget other characters getting raped, mainly Amy Rose, Sonic being raped by Shadow, or Shadow getting raped by Mephilles. Scourge is most of the time, if not all is labeled as a rapist in a story. If I'm right somewhere it said he was a womanizer. But my question is why do you want to go into detail about stuff like that. People actually enjoy stories like this. Rape isn't something that should be enjoyed by people who have nothing better to do then actually read through the whole thing. I say the majority of Shadamy fans are most at fault of this because they bastardize Sonic so much, even to the point where they make him rape Amy. Shadow shows up and saves her beats the living heck out of Sonic, then right there they proclaim their love for each other. The majority of ShadAmy fans hate Sonic and there favorite character is Shadow.

SonAmy stories have Shadow involved with him trying to take Amy away from Sonic, and in return gets the freaking crap beaten out of him with Sonic and Amy living happily ever after. Sometimes you never actually find out why Shadow wants to have Amy and you get the cliched, "He sees her as another Maria in hedgehog form".

With KnuxRouge, they also have Knuckles bastardized by the majority of ShadRouge fans. Because everyone knows Knuckles abuses Rouge when they are in a relationship. Yeah. <_< Shadow then emerges as a hero and saves Rouge from the "evil" Knuckles and they live happily ever together with Knuckles dead. Why kill him off? Knuckles doesn't abuse people.

The stories dealing with a new threat for Sonic and his friends usually start out fine, but then you find out that the main villain is a Gary-Stu, with a cliched goal of, "I'm going to destroy the world, and be the most powerful being in the world!" And lets not forget the introductions of OC after OC into the story. And you know what else is sad Eggman is nowhere to be seen. :( And to make things worse the official characters are getting killed off and being replaced by the OCs. It gets to the point where it has nothing to do with Sonic. The supposed "underdog" fancharacter takes the role of the hero because the villain destroyed his home, his family, and he wants revenge. It's so cliched. Did I forget to mention he can go even faster then Sonic, and has stronger Chaos powers then Shadow? And best of all he can go Super! Its like can you cut down on trying to make the character outshine Sonic. Point aside its where the author is better off putting all his fancharacters into another story where none of the Sonic characters are involved. Its also very hard to find a good story dealing with adventure without romance involved. Its okay to have some hints here and there, but other then that I don't think its needed. Though if the author can execute it well then they should go for it. I just don't want to read about Sonic yelling out Amy's name every time she gets kidnapped. (Sonic 06 reference)

I also like to read some stories with romance involved, but not to read pointless sex scenes for no reason or the sex scenes all together. I mean whrere's the plot? Sonic, after a hard day's work of defeating some robots goes to Amy's house to have sex with her just because he's stressed?

Once again this also goes for all characters who have pointless sex with each other, that is being written by minors or at least according to their accounts. I also found out what a "lemon" was when I first started reading Sonic stories. I was creeped out for ahwhile when I read that story. Another popular theme is the Sonic characters in high school. Sometimes it starts out like Dr. Eggman being a principle at a school for no reason, and Sonic and his friends go undercover as students. Now the rest of the stories just deal with so much friggin drama that it feels like I should just watch a drama series on T.V. And lets not forget that teen pregnancy is a problem in high school, so why not put that in the story. Someone gets pregnant and everyone is like, "Who's the father?" Its then when I'm waiting for Maury to just pop out of nowhere in the story. And let's not forget the Twilight Parodies.

Now the gay and lesbian pairings are popular with the people who enjoy it. I know its the whole, "None of the Sonic Characters have been stated gay" or, "Well none of the characters were stated straight either". Well there hasn't been any hints that any of the characters are gay, but people still pair them up anyway regardless. I'll take Sonic and Tails for example. Why? Because apparently some fans thinks that they are both gay since Sonic runs away from Amy all the time and Tails doesn't have a crush on any girl character (not counting Cosmo because she was exclusive for Sonic X) which automatically means that Sega is hinting that they are gay. I honestly find that hard to believe. Some people like the idea of it some don't. But pointless Yaoi scenes with no plot but to please Sonails fans is really not good. Have some freaking development to build between the two to have them both as a couple if you like it. Bottom line, I'm not a fan of gay or lesbian pairings. Have I read manga where couple were gay or lesbians? Yes. Sailor Moon and Gentlemen's Alliance Cross are both my examples. It's just that Yaoi or Yuri Sonic stories shouldn't be just for sex, but at least try to write something that has some development between them that isn't just a one chapter story with Sonic and Shadow doing each other or Amy and Rouge for the same matter.

But with all that insanity happening in stories, I know that's why people tend to stay away from them, and I don't blame them if they do. Though with so much bad stories, there are only a few that I enjoy. I wish there were more of them. So this ends my first long rant and, I would like to know what you guys think about Sonic fanfiction? Please Discuss!

EDIT: Since this was on my mind and I didn't want to forget it; I never said this while typing the rant. My apologies. If people want to like any couple pairing I think its fine. Because honestly liking a particular couple that people claim has to be cannon is wrong. Even to the sense where they get flamed constantly. People are free to like whatever couple they prefer. As I said in another topic it won't change anyone's view on it and they won't drop it three hours later. As long as its some good development leading between the two characters then its fine. I wouldn't count the Humor stories though because of some of them having if not, all but some of the OC for comedy reasons.

Most of the good fanfic I've read is a retelling of a game's story, sadly. It's not impossible to write a good script that doesn't involve controversial subjects such as rape, includes a lot of characters (very often overpowered) and keeps character personalities. The problem is that a lot of people have no distance to this matter and rather than trying to create an artwork that could gain fans, they give vent and write whatever they think up in their storm of hormones. :P

I vote for the Eggman fans to make some fanfic. Most of them are sane and put some thought into what they write :P

Well, true there are some pretty terrible fan fictions.

But even Mary-sues can learn over time. (You should have read my first one.) XD

I think the more n00bs write, the more they learn.

Doesn't always end up that way, but some of them turn out to be very good story-tellers. =D

I never liked the OC/Fan char thing though, very few have not screwed things up with that.

But yeah, not all fan fics suck, some do, and some don't. :)

The thing about fandom is that people are free to do what they please with it. If they choose to go completely OoC and write about stuff that's entirely fanon rather than canon, then really... what's wrong with that? It's not hurting anyone.

As a Sontails fan, I'm sick of being told there's no canonical basis for that. I KNOW there isn't. It's just something I, personally, like.

I think it would be incredibly boring if everyone had to stick exactly to canon. In fact, if you really were to do that, you couldn't write anything... because the moment you make a character say or do anything that wasn't in the Sonic games/media, you're effectively making stuff up.

Why should we tell people what they can or can't write? No one is forcing anyone to read their stuff, after all. If you don't like it, stop reading the fics, go elsewhere, do something else.

Simples :)

Fanfics never bother me particularly, I just don't think they're very creative because you're using characters, places, situations that already exists. You've not really had to think up much of it yourself. But of course there are exceptions and I don't mean to offend anyone!

I don't mind things like pairings that don't make sense in the games context, because it's a fanfic and aslong as the characters still act as they should then it's ok. I mean, if you had Sonic crying in a corner because he thinks he hurt Eggmans feelings, I'd be a little weirded out and annoyed cos he'd never do that.

It depends on the author really. I myself don't read fan fiction. I prefer Fan Comics and I rarely read those.

One thing I've never understood is TailsxCream pairings. They're both kids, and they're both flying types in Heroes, but have they ever even SPOKE to each other? Well, they may have in Sonic X, but Tails has a confirmed love interest in X so that doesn't really count.

TailsxCream is just one big example of Sonic fans jumping the gun.

Theres something strange I've noticed. People often flame Sonic fanfiction for all the reasons above and yet there are other fanbases that do the exact same thing and they dont get ranted on and flamed for it, namely the Starfox and Pokemon fanbase.

Carrying on, I do agree with alot of your points however you seem to be acting as if all fanfictions are the same. Sure, there are some wierd fanfictions full of OCs and/or sex but maybe youre looking in the wrong places. For starters in the fanfiction area in SSN there arent any fanfictions about (Insert Fancharacter here) is in love with (Insert real character here) so they go off and have anal sex fanfictions yet have we? (Unless I havent noticed any).

^ I don't think that things like that really don't matter when it comes to fanfic/comics. I'd prefer it to make sense within the context of the comic but if not, whatever.

I haven't read much fanfic, but maybe it's better I haven't. I'm planning my own story of Gerald Robotnik's life, and I hope for it to be awesome. It's an area I don't think has been explored much, like a prequel to the series. How long should a fanfic be, do you think?

If you want it to be enjoyable? 15,000 words sounds about right, unless you're looking to make a short one. If you want it to be one of those long-winded pieces of crap that never seem to go anywhere? About 50 chapters that are each 8000 words.

Well I actually both read and write Sonic fanfiction. I used to be really crap at it and write said cliche fancharacter-filled plots, but I was also 12 at that point in time. Now I like to think I'm half-decent and don't desecrate either Sonic or the English language when writing fanfiction - you'll find no fancharacters in any of my stories and I stick fairly close to the action/adventure genre, just like the games.

I have actually read some fantastic stuff - anybody here read the infamous NetRaptor's fanfics? And really it just keeps getting better and better. I actually know (and read) some published authors who write AMAZING Sonic fanfiction. At almost any point in time that you catch me I'll have a fanfic I'm reading. Heck, I've even printed out some 300 page fanfics just so I can take them around with me to read.

So yeah, I guess I could say I'm unhealthily addicted to Sonic fanfiction. Yes, there is a HECK of a lot of crap out there, including but not limited to mindless violence, porn, insane pairings (I've seen a threesome between Shadow, Manic, and Espio), mary-sues and cliched next generation or high school plots, and in fact, MOST of it is utter rubbish. But there's plenty of genuine, quality fanfiction that's easily better than some books I've read and to me is the definitive Sonic experience if you're into the characters and story.

Oh, and as far as the OOC/IC debate goes, sometimes I've read some excellent fanfics that utilise being OOC for a good story. But if you take OOC too far, and don't make it relate back to the original character/concept, I wonder what's the point of even writing fanfiction at all if the characters are completely different. You may as well have an original story there - I think people read fanfiction because they want to hear about Sonic, Tails, Eggman...whoever, not some mass murderer with a terrible past who's finally seeing the light with Sonic's face slapped on them.

Does it matter? I can't see that pairing as making any sense either, but if someone wants to write fic about it, so what? Maybe they'll write a way for the two of them to get closer; maybe they'll establish them already as a 'couple'... fanfiction is always fanon rather than canon anyway. People can take it as far as they want.

From what I assume, people write fic for their own enjoyment (and those of like-minded fans) not for anyone else. If it makes 'em happy, then fine, good for them.

And for the record, I say that as someone who personally cannot stand Tails/Cream and would never in a million years read fic of it. But then, I would also never attack someone for writing it.

I read fanfictions a lot, though I have no clue why.

I also direly hate the whole "OCxOFFICIAL" business. I guess they do this because they're "in love" with some character and make a "Sonic-y" version on them-self so that character they love can love them back or something. I don't see why'd they write a fanfiction about it, though. No one wants to read about you having porno-grade sex with Shadow.

Then there's the bogus couplings. I know it's a bit hypocritical for me to say that I hate this, because I will admit I'm a Sonamy fan, but some couples are ridiculous. It's okay (I guess) if the fans want to let their imagination be free and think Knuckles and Rouge are hot for each other, but there is just no way Sonic and Shadow would ever love each other, ever. All the gay couples are pretty stupid, as are majority of the straight ones. Imagination is one thing, but it's really dumb to pair two characters together if they hate/don't know each other.

It seems most of the fans who write those things think just because two characters show a slight tolerance for the other, that automatically means their psychotically in love or something. Like those people who think Sonic and Eggman have a secret relationship because they worked together in Chronicles or something.

I'll just stick beside you on the whole thing about cliche plots.

Anyways, I read fanfictions I guess because I like some of the things the writers come up with. Most of it's stupid, yes, but there's a good story here and there.

... no. I think you'll find that the majority of people who write fic and pair characters don't actually believe that there is hard evidence to support their pairings canonically. They simply feel those characters could work well together, giving the right scenario. Or even, they just like the idea of the pairing, and so they write it.

Why is it 'dumb' to pair characters together just because they're not together or know each other in canon? It's called having an imagination. Sheesh, if we were entirely restricted by canon, we wouldn't be able to write ANYTHING.

For example - I personally don't like rival pairings - i.e. two characters having a rivalry means they must have some sort of repressed sexual attraction. Doesn't work for me. But other people like that kind of dynamic, so they go with it.

Me, I'm a big fan of best friends/partners becoming a couple... so I like Sonic/Tails. Does that mean I think they're canonically in love? Of COURSE not :P

Half? Consider yourself lucky, because when it comes to fanfiction, Sturgeon's Law is in full effect.

Really, that law says everything that needs to be said. 90% of Sonic fanfiction is crud. 90% of everything is crud. And with the internet letting anyone say anything, we're usually inundated by that 90%, with that good 10% getting buried underneath it.

The thing I don't understand about people who dislike fan fiction is the following.

The go on and on and on about it being nothing but sex, rape, violence and god knows what else... May I ask what websites these people are going to? May I ask why they keep reading those types of fictions?

It really does say more about the person disliking it than it does about the writer.

A big problem with fan fiction however is that it's the last resort for many people with little to no creative tallent. Unlike a picture or even a fangame, quality isn't easy to see, the person judging it has to actually work in order to read it. It's not a simple look and then go "Thats crap" a decent reviewer has to actually put in the time and effort to read it.

Which is probably why some people who dislike fan fiction dislike it for the reasons they do, they're just not bright or disciplined enough to put the time and effort into reading it.

However, going back to what I said about the last resort for many fans. Looking at Fanfiction.net, it's so obvious to see what I mean, I've lost count the number of times I've seen a random movie script with Sonic characters replacing the actual characters... seriously... whats the point, it's not original, nor does it make any sense, it's lazy and the only reason that the writer did it was purely down to a lack of creative talent.

Then we have the plagiarists... these are the people who take someone elses work and manipulate it so it appears original, but it isn't. I completely despise these people, not only do they claim to be good, but they're totally craping on someone elses work that is good, and it's obvious who they are... owww a Sonic fiction set in the Matrix... which has the same plot as the matrix... the same characters.... and the same dialogue? huh!?

Mind you, there is a ton of really great original work out there (MINE! *head grows twice it's regular size!), the problem is that unlike art or even fan games people have to put in the effort to actually enjoy it, so it's very easy to mock when all what people bring to the attention of others are the rape fics and the really really bad ones. Nobody can get a laugh out of a really good piece of fiction when your mate will chuckle at someones writing a serious piece of fiction about Shadow raping someone.

The level of mocking that goes on however could so easily go into another area of the fandom... take fangames for example... Theres about two games out there that are good... everything else is usually crap. And usually when you read TSSZ (lol!) sometimes reading some of the interviews that some of the good fan game makers make... Anyone would think that their lives depended on the final product or that it was a real game with millions of pounds on the line.

Then you could also put it into the devinart comunity... how much of that is actually good? Not a lot, but the stuff that is good is so easilly shown and requires so little effort to display that it's much easier for it to get put into a good light. Even if the bulk of it is random recolour in a white background or sex themed rubbish.

I've done two complete works of fanfiction in the past, one for Paper Mario and one for Smash Bros Melee... both were pretty well recieved by the online communities I was active in at the time.

But overall, in recent years I've accepted the view of one of my Uni tutors... fanfiction is great for practice but not much else.

Essentially, the way I see it, yes indeed, 90% of it is crap. The 10% that isn't? Well if you're good at writing, no point just limiting yourself to unoriginal ideas. Go write something you can truly call your own!

Just to clarify there's seriously nothing wrong with fanfiction, it does have a purpose as recreation as well as practice. But coming up with your own ideas is so much more rewarding...

Well that's why I'm neutral about the fact. I hated it seeing someone paired up with a fancharacter. A part of me still does. But like I said I'm neutral. If they want to do it then they should knock themselves out. I will agree that pretty much a lot of people will make fancharacters of themselves so they can be with a character they love or think they're hot.

As for the gay coupling it still won't change their minds. They will like it regardless. People love the rival characters and turning them into lovers. But hey I can't change them. If they like it then its up to them. I honestly don't know why people get so much hate for liking gay pairings. Some people I know like them, and they are some of the nicest people I know.

I've written a few, most of which try to capture the original feeling of the universe, while focusing on Eggman's point of view.

I did start on a pairing story between Eggman and Sera from the OVA though, so I guess I'm guilty of the fanon romance thing.

(Sera does seem to be Eggman's most popular pairing for any Eggman romance though. I never see any of Robotnik's many flings from AoStH get any story focus. I do kind of like Eggman/Ella because of the Sonic X comic too, but I haven't written about it.)

My biggest complaint when it comes to fanfiction is that some many people tend to write so called "Sonic fanfiction" where pretty much the only thing in the story that makes it "Sonic" is that the characters in it share their names with Sonic characters (and presumably also their appearance). You know like, it might be about a guy called "Tails" who have a crush on a friend called "Amy" and this other friend of his called "Sonic" finds out about it and try to get him to come out about it. You know, like a teenage-drama that might just as well have featured original, human characters and be set right here in our universe. Because there are no chaos emeralds, no power rings, no enemies t defeat, no ancient prophecies to come true... no fantastical elements or even adventure. AT ALL.

And an other thing that bothers me about this kind of fan-fiction: their handling of Eggman. Eggman is one of the series most major characters, but whose role in the series is being a supervillain for the protagonists to defeat, and thus has no place in a completely realistic teen-drama fic. So in this kind of fiction, he is usually either not mentioned at all or mentioned as having been defeated for good a long time ago. And if the heroes actually DO get to battle him, the focus will never be on the battle or the adventure itself, but merely an excuse to, for instance, have characters who otherwise dont meet a lot come together, or having a character miss a date with another character due to having to participate in the fight, or something like that.

I adore Sonic fanfiction. But only a few select bits of it, such as very well written stories free of OC's (Though authors like Netraptor and Kojiokida have acceptable and even likeable OC's feature in their stories alongside the main cast). I like fiction from all Sonic canons EXCEPT underground because Sonic's siblings are loathesome and i've never found a fic where they actually complement each other (Not that they actually did in the godawful show) and OOC behaviour. I do not read M-rated fics because what makes them M-rated is exactly the reason for why they are so nasty. I have looked through the M section out of frank curiosity, god dammit I never will do that again *Shudders horribly*

God knows why Sonic fanfiction is so derided compared to other fandom's fanfiction selection. If such people love victimising Sonic fanfiction, they'd have a bigger field day deriding Harry Potter fanfiction, of which even J K Rowling herself has found disturbing. Any fandom that has a big fanfiction loving has the M-rated fics and Mary Sues/Gary Stus. Sonic is nowhere near as bad as stuff from Star Trek and Harry Potter, it only gets the derision because of it's furryness and infamous fandom.

This is definitely a problem, I'll agree.

I mean, I'm obviously an extreme opposite case since I focus on him as the main character in my stories- But Eggman has lots of potential as both a funny and threatening antagonist as well. Written properly, the character can absolutely steal the show with his showboating and clever wordplay(And his latest robo-weapon of doom of course).

Another thing I dislike is Eggman's role in fan-character backstories. You know the one.

"Dr. Eggman killed my parents."

This backstory makes me angry. It's unoriginal, and paints Eggman as this random murderer who goes around killing unimportant people who have nothing to do with his aspirations for conquest. This, coupled with the heroes' furious hatred of Eggman as opposed to their more grounded in-game friendly rivalry with him, leads to some very horrid character interaction with the doctor in many fanfics. I can understand, say, SatAM Robotnik getting this treatment, but many stories will treat Eggman as if he has Julian's rap sheet of cruelty in terms of how the characters treat him.

Original characters are iffy- I've made some, but they're never the central focus- or even a central focus- of my stories. Just citizens, robots, etc. to flesh the world out a bit, but never become major players in the plot overall.

To the OP: Like everything else in the world, it depends on the readers themselves. They may not like it, they may like/love it... Yeah, depends on opinion.

Hm, how funny... None of you here seem to mention about crossovers, which I specialize in my fics...

Yeah, I don't do Sonic-only fics. I don't do character pairings, I keep the fancharacters down to a mininum, instead focusing on the main characters themselves... And I sure as hell don't do romance either.

The only category listed I fall into is the cliched plots and the whole "villain wants to take over the world" plot structure. That, and the heavily DBZ-inspired fights I got going on, which I know some here would hate... But other than that, I try to keep the characters' personalities intact... Well, except for Sonic, who's slightly more caring than usual. And I try to use the characters' canon abilities every once in a while.

But yeah, we're all different. What appeals to some may not appeal to others. And I've certainly had my fair share of praise and backlash on my fics.

I was working on a fanfiction a while ago, but I stopped because I realized it was full of stale tropes and cliches.
