The dramatic lives of Sonic NPCs

PC the Hedgehog

The majority of Sonic fans prefer to blast through levels and not blather with random NPCs (non-playable characters). At one time I felt similarly, until a recent playthrough of Sonic Adventure resulted in me talking to everyone I saw in the Adventure Fields.

It was quite the interesting experience. Many of the citizens had a story to tell. And to make things more interesting, their dialogue continued to change as the game's plot went along. I followed the heart-wrenching drama of the little boy whose mother would abandon him to go play the slots in Casinopolis. I followed the journey of the shy lovestruck girl who stood awkwardly in front of the burger shop every day until she finally caught the eye of the boy working inside. And I listened intently as the train station employee complained about how much he hated his job, climaxing with the entire station going on strike.

Of course, a great deal of NPCs have no bearing on the actual storyline, but they can be quite amusing and add some extra flavor to a game.

Anyone else enjoy talking to NPC characters in Sonic games? Any particular exchanges or "stories" that amused you?

I remember the where that Girl fell in love with the Burger Boy. There is some Interresting Inclusions if you go to talk to all the people in the Last Story in Adventure 1.

In before "Find Jasmine!"

Personally, I was a fan of the Sonic '06 NPCs in regards to their attitude. They didn't affect the plot that much, but they were still doing their bit to help out Sonic on their own small scale (like the boy who climbed the roof to try and act as a lookout).

I rarely do it but when I had to get one trophie from Unleashed that required talking to every NPC I was suprised that more than half of them just say random things with no sence at all, at least the robots from Eggman Land where fun to talk.

I generally dont pay that much attention to the NPC's, but i did enjoy talking with them in SA1 after finishing Tails story. Everyone is all like "Did you see Tails defeating Eggman? Man, that kid kicks ASS! He could totally have me if he wanted to!" (you know, more or less). It was just nice seeing Tails get some in-universe recognition for once.

Unleashed's NPC's were delightful in terms of character and development.

- Denise getting frequently pranked by Mauro in Spagonia. I lol'd when she comes out with Mauro sticking super glue to the chairs in her hairdressers "They all went home with their chairs stuck to their backsides"

- Poor Jari-Thule getting harassed by his harpy of a wife Sarianna in Holoska. Does that guy ever catch a break from her?

- Eric speaking on behalf of his wife Anastasia because she lost her dentures in the earthquake. She lets him have it later on in the story.

- Gwek 'retiring' as the elder of Mazuri and going on a world trip XD

- Hualin running away from Chun-Nan because she can't face the prospect of being a part of her family's Meat Bun business.

- Louie hitting on Sonic in Empire City and giving him lessons in love, getting excited after every success and lusting after Sonic's body in both forms. He's probably the most flamboyant NPC ever. Look at the way he walks in that stereotypical homosexual manner laugh.png

- Sammar getting lost in various countries in her efforts to get to Shamar.

- Otto in Spagonia giving you advice about where to go to restore emeralds. He even claims to have been friends with Pickle for over 80 years.

- Iman telling Sonic's fortune once you've given her her "Tools of Augury". Sonic's possible responses to her questions can be pretty funny and portray Sonic as being a Deadpan Snarker.

Who can forget that woman in Station Square who could never really chalk up the courage to talk to the guy in the hamburger restuarant? By Super Sonic's story, she even gains employment there! And the man with the hat on a 'date' with a woman around Station Square? It's revealed later on by the hotel pool that he's been a naughty boy, committing adultery.

When I was replaying Sonic Adventure I found out that while Sonic was doing his own thing, there's a strike happening with the Railway services.

Did you remember all of those?

This topic reminds me a bit of Majora's mask. As I played that game, I started to see that each NPC had their own daily life, and they became so much more real to me as I watched them go about their routine. A game like that pulls you alot more into the afairs of the individual. In the same way, watching characters develop throughout the plot of Sonic Adventure was interesting in much the same way. It would be nice to see a Sonic game that takes the time to give the same sort of focus to the afairs of the little people, either in the main story or in side missions.

Yep. I've played Unleashed over and over again and one of it's most endearing aspects was the memorable antics of the NPC's. They bought that world to life. The only thing that would arguably make it better would be anthropomorphic NPC's. The Unleashed NPC's are loveable because of the effort put into them. They have entries in the Encyclopedia inside Pickle's lab, have their own personalities and their own distinctive appearance.

Sonic Adventure also had some great NPC's. Like;

- The little girl who waits outside the Train Station for her father to come home from work.

- The prideful man outside the building that leads to Speed Highway who loves his skyscraper.

- As I said earlier, the man in the hat who is two-timing his wife and who gets confronted about his adultery by the hotel's pool at one point in Sonic's story.

- "Mr Know-it-All" who gives tips regarding controls etc.

- The owner of the antique shop who talks about how much he likes Amy, explains that she lives by herself downtown, how she visits him every so often and who drives it into Sonic that he should be treating her right.

- The Train Station worker who seemingly hates his job and wishes to strike over low wages and bad working hours.

- The Echidna's in the past who provide interesting tidbits about their tribe, how great Pachacamac is, 'Grandma', the force surrounding the shrine etc.

SonicxLouie FTW. Second human-hedgehog romance in the series.

...And we thought Elise was bad.

Just kidding.

I always liked that little love story in Unleashed between that girl from Chun Nan and that other guy from Empire City (I think)

This guy, this guy here was awesome.

I talked to pretty much all of the NPCs in SA1 while I was screwing around and doing random crap like making tails stand on streetlights. I kind of enjoyed following the NPCs stories like that burger shop girl.

I loved it when there was this railway strike. As if Station Square was in Poland. laugh.png SA generally had the best human NPCs so far. I really liked the anime style.

Btw, did that girl waiting for her dad finally meet him? I can't remember >_>;; It would be quite worrying if she didn't...

While I like little details like that, Sonic isn't really geared towards exploring them.

I remember a girl in SA in Knuckles story who talked about the colors of the trio. She thought Knuckle's red was the best. I dunno, but for some reason I really liked that.

You needn't worry, she met up with him at the end of the story.

I always liked talking with the NPCs, to the extent that I felt that they should have been given at least 2 quotes for after the story ended, just so they didn't say the same thing every single time. But I'm a detail-oriented person and I like hubworlds.
