So I was watching Cobanerman's walkthrough and I've found a new love for Emerald Coast Modern, mainly due to me discovering that the dolphins made it into the gaame

Buy this game. Really, I mean it. If you own a 3DS and like Sonic then buy this game. Youtube videos don't do this game justice; you need to see and play it hands on. It's FUN, and also very nicely presented in the graphics department. There's so much I could say about this, but I'm going to wait until I've completed everything.

Just finished the story mode.

First impressions are... mixed, to be honest. Casino Night Act 2 and parts of Mushroom Hill Act 2 I found outright horrid.

Time Eater was a bit better than the console version in some ways in that it was a lot more structured and logical, but then was dragged down by the fact his attack pattern is ridiculously longwinded and you rarely get a chance to attack him.

I need to replay the stages more before I can give a fairer opinion, mind, but based on my first playthrough alone, the level design doesn't seem all that great to be honest. =/

I agree with you 100%.

The YouTube videos had me worried. But now that I actually have this game in my hands, I can't put it down. It's so much fun to replay through the levels. biggrin.png

Got the game yesterday and finished it this morning.

Final Thoughts. I really liked this version. It's a great little game to take on the go and going through levels again to get the high score is addictive. The classic physics have been vastly improved from Sonic 4 EP 1. I'm glad Dimps listened to the feedback and taken it on board to correct them. While I enjoyed Sonic 4 EP 1, the physics could of been a lot better.

The level design isn't the best Dimps has ever done, but there are some levels that are so fun to replay through. Classic Emerald Coast and Modern Tropical Resort are my favourites. Some levels are clearly better than others. Here's hoping that now the physics are done right, the level design will be improved for next time.

The story presentation was typical Dimps fare, but I liked that the character models animated. Sure it's not much in the way the story was presented but it was a nice touch.

I really loved the remixes as well. Already have a few of them stuck in my head.

The game overall is great fun. Sure a few things hold it back like a few level designs, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be in my opinion. The console version is far superior in comparison overall, but this was a fun handheld adventure I will enjoy going back to.

Just finished it here too. Gotta say, I really liked it. It's certainly a COMPLIMENT to the console version since the stages are all of course "second choices" and for the most part not as deep or exciting as the HD ones (with the exception of the final boss, which while balls-to-the-walls hard, was damn better than the HD one), but it's still a fine fine game.

My only major dissapointments were:

- Lack of Classic remixes for Water Palace and Tropical Resort, and rather basic ones for Emerald Coast and Radical Highway.

- Complete lack of even one "proper" cut-scene. I wonder if anyone who hasn't seen the "real" cut-scenes would even know what's going on with these basic representational ones (Time Eater gets an "object of interest" unanimated graphic? Really?)

- Lack of original graphics for Rival battle locations (could have been a great opportunity to represent a couple other stages and maybe a Rivals stage for Silver).

But yeah, in general pretty great.

Just beat the whole 3DS game in an hour or two. Overall, a really fun game. Can't compare to the console version, but well, that's just to be expected. Most of the levels were really fun, though I found that the Dreamcast era Modern stages had too many instant death pits. However, after playing through them some more times, I'm sure they'll no longer give me any problems.

Classic Sonic definitely steals the show in this game, though. His levels are fast, fun, and just feel right. Even the homing attack is a welcome addition, making the game play like a non-broken Sonic 4. Another highlight of the game is the boss battles. All of them are great, but the Time Eater himself was one of the best Super Sonic showdowns ever. Too bad the rivals couldn't be as much fun to race; Metal Sonic was the only truly satisfying one to face off against, as the races against Shadow and Silver just amounted to knowing when to air boost to skip dips in the track.

In the end, I wasn't dissatisfied with Generations 3DS in the slightest. It met my expectations perfectly, and provided one of the few worthwhile experiences on the 3DS that isn't a port. And while this game may not be as great as the console version, it doesn't even come close to being as bad as many people assumed it would be due to the primary developer and early video footage. In fact, I'd be bold enough to say that it is one of the best handheld Sonic outings there has ever been.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention the soundtrack. Mostly great, if not a bit too faithful to the original tracks. But what the hell was up with the Modern Radical Highway remix? That was just uncalled for.

Some Sonic fans would eat anything Sega gives to them. Am I right?

I mean, really, the game is just meh.. Nostalgia is great and bosses are pretty good and the music and the final boss, but the level design is so shallow and uninspiring..

The level design does have bland moments where you're just running up and down hills for a while and letting springs guide you, and it does suffer a lot from classic cheap Dimps enemy/pit placement (ESPECIALLY on Radical Highway/Emerald Coast - especially cheap feeling considering you can go underwater in Water Palace), but aside from that they did a pretty good job. Each level even manages to have classic style gimmicks exclusive to that level, both on Act 1s and Act 2s.

Maybe the water in emerald coast is way to deep. With water Palace you have building there. Like some of the first mario games the levels that had water in them but was not an underwater level you would lose

They could have added underwater segments just as they did Seaside Hill. Not that it should make any difference but you could actually go underwater in Big's version of Emerald Coast.

That's a pathetic excuse. The water is as deep as they want it to be. Rather than a dead set bottomless pit there could have been some shallow reefs.

I found Tropical Resort and Water Palace to be really fun, which is funny because Dimps has experience with those levels originally. The Dreamcast stages alternated between hectic boost-a-thons and "slow down or you die!" even more than Unleashed HD, but the levels were fun from the "What IF these stages were 2D?" angle.

The Genesis stages were terrible to me, though. I wish the game had been all DC and Modern stages, and I'm a Classic fan. I just hated rehash Classic levels and the Modern stages weren't even special.

Oh, and Bosses are ...odd. I hate Egg Emperor. Biolizard is fun. Big Arm is about as good as Death Egg Robo.

Rivals...are awful

At first I was like "man unlocking music is as nice as it is on the HD version, but what's the point if you can't listen to them in-game?"

Then I had a brainwave. Plug in your headphones. Set it to "Play List" mode with X. Close 3DS and put in pocket. Oh yes they set it to continue playing when closed.

You will never be far from Sonic tunes on the go again. Now that is a NICE bonus, especially to kids who wouldn't know the first thing about finding the soundtracks online.

On closer inspection, all the vocal songs I've unlocked so far ARE their shorter "trailer" versions, but still.

Also, to rank this amongst Dimps previous handheld games, based purely on gameplay...

7. Sonic Advance 2

6. Sonic Advance 3

5. Sonic Rush Adventure

4. Sonic Colors DS

3. Sonic Rush

2. Sonic Generations 3DS

1. Sonic Advance

And last but not least...

God tier: Sonic Pocket Adventure

(Now that's a ranking I can get behind)

My ranking would be:

7. Sonic Advance 2

6. Sonic Rush Adventure

5. Sonic Advance

4. Sonic Advance 3

3. Sonic Rush

2. Sonic Colors DS

1. Sonic Generations 3DS

(No ranking for Pocket Adventure because i still haven't played it yet.)
