Is Sonic Too Slow?

This has been done loads with Unleashed and Generations already. When boosting, the world becomes distorted making scenery look further away than it it, but you still reach it really fast. They also make use of a 'vertigo effect' affect a lot, alters how far away scenery looks. Best place to see this is just before the corkscrew and the end of C.GHZ. Literally stand at the foot of it and walk left and right. The BG will pan in and out.

To be fair, I'm not watching a lot of Gens videos right now. =P However, I wouldn't just mess with distance though, especially if such effects are only working on the background which I'm assuming means the art and models that Sonic isn't going to interact with at all. I'd find a way to play with the scaling of nearby objects and your actual pathway at high speeds too, so that they shrunk and grew at exaggerated rates. I'd do it especially with larger architectural pieces like buildings and bridges. Then was my prior idea of actually allowing Sonic to gain in his pathway. Instead of having him roughly in the center of the screen all the time no matter the speed, allow him to move forward a certain distance the longer you're on the gas, both on the X and Z axis. Not too far to where he left the screen altogether, but just enough to achieve that perception. That'd be an interesting way to implement a boosting limit too.

While I do agree with him that the jump should keep your momentum ala the classics (with a button to lock your speed to make slow platforming sections easier), No, Sonic is fast enough. I like that he was slowed down for Generations, allowing for more, and better, control, but is still fast enough to give you the Unleashed feeling of true mach speed.

LOL!

Tell him to go play something else. He isn't even worth arguing with. Oh and by the way, tell him that if the game was any faster then the textures would probably be a whole lot worse.

He foo real?

You should show him a speed run of unleashed, like this one:

If this doesn't make his eyes melt, nothing will.

Moved to Sonic Discussion since this seems to encompass more than merely Sonic Generations.

For speed for the sake of speed, there's still nothing better than F-Zero GX. Hand him that sometime and see if he can handle it; it sounds like what he's really after.

I dunno. For my money, Unleashed provides a much greater sensation of speed, inspite of its speed probably being lower than that of F-Zero. Mostly because of the cramped spaces and narrow hallways. The scenery which is very close to Sonic flies by at a rate of knots.

But then, I can't fully understand this kid. How can you make Sonic faster and take away the jump. The result is simply NOT Sonic.

Wow. No.

It honestly sounds like he doesn't want a Sonic game, and just want's a different series altogether. No jump? Yeah, no. This is a platforming series.

This. As soon as someone says something like "Sonic is not or should not be a platformer", then that's a clear sign that they haven't actually played Sonic in years and are relying on vague memories of something called 'blast processing.' I don't want to put this forward as fact, but I just don't see how you can play a Sonic game-any any Sonic game, and say that the platforming is unnecessary. Without it, all you have is a game that lets you run fast.

Heck, if they were to remove platforming in Sonic Generations, then you could literally play the entire game just by holding in the boost button. I love speed, but that alone makes for incredibly shallow gameplay.

I think your friend should play some Sonic Labyrinth.

No Jump Button? NO PROBLEM.

YOU'RE TOO SLOW! YOU'RE TOO SLOW! YOU'RE TOO SLO- *Shot*

Eh, anyway, how are you meant to move platform to platform without a Jump may I ask?

Sonic in his prime (S3&K) was pretty slow when compared to most other Sonic games, yet it was awesome.

Sonic the character is fast, but that shouldn't necessarily translate to gameplay 100%.

The irony is that Labyrinth is the slowest Sonic game to date.

Is Sonic too slow?

No... no he's not. ._.

So... topic purpose completed then? Are we in agreement that Sonic is, in fact, not too slow?

I got the feeling from all the TV shows and games put together, that Sonic can go much faster.

My ideas are; If he went max speed he wouldn't be able to see the scenery. He probably can't watch where he places his feet at max speed either. It also seems he holds back so he can surprise bad guys, in a pinch.

And my main point is this:

Sonic practically never gets tired while running around. So of course he can go faster, he'd just get tired...probably...

Well it made mine melt. Now I'm going to go pick my jaw off the floor and solidify my eyeballs. :P

To play Devil's Advocate a bit, I have noticed that in the Generations demo, Sonic does seem a tad slower than in Unleashed. However, I've taken into account several factors:

  • My Day Sonic in Unleashed is maxed out
  • There may be a speed upgrade in Generations, just as there was in Unleashed

And here's what I think is the big one here: Sonic's speed may be deliberately capped in order to make Super Sonic appear all the more faster. I'm guessing that Super Sonic will probably meet or exceed the speed of a maxed out day Sonic in Unleashed, with a little extra destruction thrown in.

I haven't played HD Unleashed, so I can't compare, but between Super Sonic and speed upgrades (which I know are in the game,) he should be plenty fast. Also, the only way you could even have a decent Sonic game without jumping is either things like boosting up hills and then to another platform, having moving platforms to right/left when another platform is lower than you, having springs, or be able to use homing attack on the ground, or a spindash that you can use to get air. It would still be annoying though (just barely decent at that,) and removing the jump is just ridiculous. Just tell him to go play SaSASR if he wants to play a really fast Sonic game. :P

The ironic thing about this video in relation to the OP? That speed was only made possible by the God Damn jump button! wink.png

I think i can see what he means though, if he's played Sonic Unleashed then he could be going off of that as well, in unleashed, Sonic could hit speeds from 500-700 MPH provided that you've gotten all of his speed upgrades in, but with generations you may hit about speeds up to like 200-300 MPH maybe at the most so to anyone that are really adapted in terms of honing and taming Sonic's speed he may still seem fast but noticeably more slowed down, disappointing, and a little more boring, but honestly to fix this you could just get unleashed if you care about speed, and the thing about the A button being removed would not be a recommended idea seeing that you would need a lot of platforming done.

Actually the jump button is mainly for platforming, not speed promotion.

Wait, he seriously thinks today's sonic games are slow? I'm sorry but I think your friend is a fucking moron. Seriously.

Slow? Hmm. Is Sonic slow? Well, if you can go over 1,500 MPH, you are clearly fast. Besides, the games are still fast paced, just look at Unleashed. He can go over 2,000 MPH in that game. I know Sonic's average speed is 765 MPH (obviously the speed of sound), but I don't think he's in anyway slow. You tell me.
