Sonic 2 = Overrated

Anyone else feel it's severely overrated? I can understand it because of Nostalgia and all that, but really, it wasn't that brilliant. Sonic 3 + K is better in almost every way, and the Adventure titles were better too in my opinion. I did love Chemical Plant and Casino Night, but then I loved Lava Reef, Sky Sanctuary, Ice Cap (Sonic 3 one), practically all the action stages of the Adventure titles, some of Heroes' (dare I say it...) and Unleashed's day time stages. Sonic 2 just can't compare. Also, what really annoys me is when 'Sonic fans' said/say 'the last good Sonic game was Sonic 2'. What the hell? That means you only like two games in the series. It's not really fair to call these people fans, and Sonic Team should not bother trying to please THEM.

Sonic 2 is definitely good (and had brilliant music as always), but far too overrated. In fact i'd say it's the weaker of the classics, apart from the first one, but that's the first one. You know, the blue guy's debut. Sonic CD should be getting the love, especially since the time travel mechanic was (likely) intended for Sonic 2 all along.

Anyone agree that it's overrated?

I've never played it, so I'm not sure. It seems to be a lot of people's favorites though.

It's a good game, but the thing that kills it for me is half of it's zones (Mystic Cave Zone, Oil Ocean zone, Hill Top Zone etc.) are such a chore to go through.

Can you actually link to someone saying that? Who is actually a Sonic fan?

No Sonic 2 is not overrated, nor is it underrated... actually... I don't think many people talk about Sonic 2, at least not compared to the level of talk that Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles get.

Sonic 2 is a great game, it's a sequel thats arguably better than the original in every respect, story, music, design, you name it.

Even the special stages are radically different to those in Sonic 1, usually when you get a sequel, it's very hard to tell the difference between it and the original, can't really say the same for Sonic 2.

Sonic 2, was flawed yes, but it had consistantly good level design. The gameplay was based on a solid concept, which was made better with the spindash and worked well. The music was also excellent. The only time the game slipped was really on Metropolis with the awkward enemy placement.

Its a good game. Most certainly better than the Adventure 2 and most other games that followed.

In hy opinion the game which is most overestimated in Sonic Adventure 2, but then most people already know that I really don't like that game.

I don't feel Sonic 2 is overrated, really. It's not my favorite of the Genesis games (Actually, it's my least favorite of the Genesis games), but I do like it a lot, and I can totally understand why it's as popular as it is... Even though I do like Sonic 1 and Sonic 3/Knuckles better.

But Sonic 2's a good game, and it deserves all the props it gets in my opinion.

Umm, are you for real? If anything id call Sonic 3 and Knuckles "overrated" if I didnt know how over used such a term has become.

Based on what ive seen it's treated as the black sheep of he classics, yet I have no idea why. Its my personal favorite Sonic game, so I guess thats just me seeing this.

Sonic 2 is my least favorite game in the Classic Trilogy.

I can't stand going through it. It had some of the most terrible enemy placement imaginable, retarded level design after the halfway point, stupid final boss run and also Metropolis Zone.

The word overrated is quite overrated.

The definition is "to overestimate the merits of; rate too highly." No game that is liked by people is "overrated". It's just the fact that you don't like it. I really find the word: "overrated" to be smug and usually just an utterly meaningless term to make someone seem more "opinionated" than others.

This is a silly line of reasoning. Overrated can very much be a subjective term and most of the time it is, which is funny cause your first sentence is pretty much conforming that line of thought. Pray tell what other words would you use to describe an opinion of yourself believing that a game is getting far too much praise than you feel it should from your own experience?

That's not being smug or more opinionated. It's your own common disbelief that wires the human mind to react against anything that isn't positive. Overrated doesn't mean bad.

Overrated? Maybe, but only because Sonic 3&K expanded upon it. Taken on it's own, it's still a solid title.

Personally, I think Colors is more overrated than Sonic 2. Not a bad game, but it just didn't live up to it's full potential.

Wait really? This is the 1st time I've ever heard of anyone saying S2 was overrated. If anything colours is beyond overrated.

I have to disagree with that, everyone I know hates Colors and treats Unleashed Godly. Alright, I'm going to stop going off-topic now. The Adventure series is highly more overrated than Colors and Sonic 2.

Sonic 2 is overrated

Someone's been on Sonic Retro long enough to see all dat Sonic 2, I see.

Anyways, I think it just comes down to your pair of Nostalgia Glasses and opinions. I played Sonic CD first, then Sonic 3 & Knuckles, then Sonic R, then Sonic 2, then Sonic 1, then the Adventures and 2D games.

I wouldn't be surprised if that affected my affections towards Sonic CD and S3&K over Sonic 2. I like Sonic 2, but some levels are just forgettable to me, like, I'll list out the levels in my mind and realize I missed some because I just didn't care for them, like Oil Ocean and Aquatic Ruin.

Good game is good game, either way. *shrug*

Sonic 2 is not overrated. And I'd hate to say it, and people might shoot me in the head for it, but Sonic Colors is kinda overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love this game to bits, but it's not perfect. It's a good Sonic game compared to Black Knight and Unleashed, which, while Unleashed has it's flaws and I don't consider it today, it's pretty fun to me.

Sonic CD should be getting the love, especially since the time travel mechanic was (likely) intended for Sonic 2 all along.

Now why make it a contest? The classic games each had unique things to offer while still retaining the core mechanics. I learned that from people calling Sonic CD overrated. I'm in the minority that likes all four of the main series classic games (counting Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as one game here) because of their similarities. But now I realize that not everyone sees these similarities the same way I do. That's because the draw of the classic games was what new thing each game had to offer in spite of them all sharing the same engine. Some people just don't resonate with Sonic CD's exploration-based level design. Same with Sonic 2's difficulty.

Although I will say that Sonic 2 gets rehashed way too much because of everyone's incessant worship of it.

I agree that if anything, S3&K is the overrated one, at least among the fanbase. And i say this despite S3&K being my favorite Sonic game. I pointed out not long ago in another topic how odd it seems to me that so many people who consider S3&K to be their favorite Sonic game or at least among their top three can consider S2 to not even rank among the top ten games of the franchise. Im not saying that either S3&K or S2 "needs" to be near the top of anyones list or anything, but it seems odd to me that someone who do consider one of them top notch can consider the other one mediocre. For all the differences there are between the games, they are all things considered very alike, especially when compared to any other game in the franchise.

Let me put it this way; If you think S3&K is the best or at least among the very best games of the series, then why wouldn't you consider the game in the franchise that most closely resemble that game to be among the very best as well? What is it that S3&K has that S2 doesn't that is so important that buttloads of Sonic games that doesn't play anything at all like S3&K rank between the two?

Wow, lots of replies. Thanks guys!

Anyway, just to clarify, I really love Sonic 2, but it's my least favourite of the Classics.

Oh, and Metropolis... Remember that bit with walls lined with bumpers and that grasshopper thing perfectly placed to knock you down again? Ugh. I hate that level. The vertical wrap glitch makes it more bearable though.

Oh, and as for the thing about people saying the last Sonic game they liked was Sonic 2, it wasn't that common but it was on Generations reviews comments/Youtube comments and just annoyed me.
