Sonic 2 = Overrated

No, I played Tails Only a couple of times, but it was years ago. It would probably be different if he had a super form in this game though. :)

I'm actually not a big fan of Sonic 2. Yes, it bring Tails, Spindash, and overall improvements to the series but I find it to be a bore. I suppose it's the level design. Chemical Plant and Mystic Cave or cool, but the rest I either hate or find to be average. This music doesn't do much for me either.

It's not bad or overrated, it's just not my thing compared to Sonic 1, Sonic CD, or S3&K.

As for the Tails complaint, it's optional, but it really would've been better if the AI was good to the point where nobody would need to switch to Sonic alone out of ragequitting.

I'm not too fussed about Tails, he's optional after all. But I like to have him with me, but can't if I want to do the special stage. The real issue though, is that even without him they're just so bloody hard. At least, to me they are. Probably one the hardest things ever in a Sonic  game. Ever.

Personally I like sonic 2, I think its a real good challenge but it's still really enjoyable to play :). I get fustrated sometimes with the awkward enemy placement (especially in Metropolis Zone) but I think it improves on Sonic one by quite a bit. For starters you have the spindash, which since has become a backbone of sonic (other such features haven't, like the Super Peel Out from Sonic CD). The story is good and is continued in sonic 3 & Knux and the Sonic 2 special stages are vastly different from Sonic 1.

I know it isn't the best Sonic title out there, but I throughly enjoy playing it, it gives me a nice challenge as Sonic 1 I just find too hard, I have NEVER been able to complete it sadly, and Sonic 2 I have only reccently gotten all the way through. I have never had any REAL issues with Tails...except during Metropolis Zone, with the steam jets and the automatic floors that won't close untill Tails is out of the way.

it is a nice game in the original trilogy and sits nicely between Sonic 1 and 3 :)

People played as Tails alone in Sonic 2? I understand playing as him in future games but he was beyond pointless in Sonic 2. He was basically a nerfed Sonic with no super form. At least Knuckles had his glide ability when you combined the cartridges.

I don't think Sonic 2 is overrated.

I don't think Sonic 3&K is overrated either though, and some of you know how much bile I have towards that, Sonic 3 in particular.

Really? Of all the games, I've never heard a single complaint from anyone about Sonic 3&Knuckles.

It's a little overrated. I like Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic Rush better.

I think that Sonic 1 and Sonic CD are overrated.

But their's a lot of popular games that are overrated(I'm looking at you Ocarina of Time).

Hey! Leave Ocarina Of Time alone! And Sonic 1 and CD too!But yeah, I like Rush too. It's one of my favourite Sonic games ever, and I don't know why I love it so much. It had brilliant music, even by Sonic standards (which are phenomenally high)

I thought the same about Ocarina of Time until I beat the final boss just a couple of months ago. The whole presentation of that last boss was thrilling. I generally dislike final bosses but that one I look forward to. Granted it's not my favorite game of all time like everyone else but I could say, "Wow, that was fun! I see why people like this!"

Plus that game's music was godly and I'm hard to please in the music department..

Now... if they can have final bosses like that then why are these current ones so damn anti-climatic. Ooh.... tangent. Right... about Sonic.

I think Sonic CD, as I've seen on this forum, appeals to a certain audience. I love Sonic CD and only play my Japanese version of it (Yes, the music is way better), but many here find it to be convoluted. My friend, who loves Sonic too, doesn't understand it herself. I'm always saying, "Sonic CD is SO fun and the Japanese soundtrack is amazing! It's not hard! Start in the present, go to the past and kill the machine and then you have a good future!!!"

....she'll never get it.

Preference comes with age.

While Sonic 2 is much more streamlined, Sonic 3&K outweigh bads with its sheer amount of volume.

Thing is though Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles are flawed experiences as stand alone titles. This is where Sonic 2 does better.

*****

Sonic 3 & K is like going out and getting a large box of Oreos...while Sonic 2 is just 1.....freshly baked homemade cookie that your moms used to make.

This is a thread.

Iv'e never played Ocarina of Time (i've seen others play snippets of it, but that's it) but iv'e heard it get mentioned several times as one of those games that you really need to have played when it first came out in order to truly realize why people love it so much. It is always mentioned as a game that, back in 1998, blew all competition away in the sense that it managed to create a universe that felt alive and breathing in a way that no other game had before, but that nowadys, everything that OoT did has been done again so many times that the game doesn't really come of as anything that special anymore. Kinda how nobody playing Sonic 1 for the first time today is going to feel particularly blown of their feet by Sonic's "blistering" speed.

I only just played it a few years ago and I think it holds up pretty well- I think that's just a fallback defense fans give in case someone who hasn't tried it doesn't end up liking. If you enjoyed Twilight Princess, there's probably nothing you would feel any worse about OoT. Aged graphics aside.

Is 10 days considered reviving a dead thread? If it is then I apologise, but I kind of wanted to throw my 2 cents in there, after stumbling across this thread during a Google search.

To me, Sonic 2 was the best of the original 4 (5 if you count Sonic 3 and Knuckles as 2 games, which I personally don't) Sonic games. To me it had by far the catchiest music, most visually appealing zones, it bought Tails into the series, had really fun multiplayer (even if only a select few stages were available in it) etc. I love Sonic 1 to pieces as well and I'm rather fond of Sonic CD. To me Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the weakest, by no means would I call it overrated (as if to imply it had no merit whatsoever) but to me it was the least memorable in terms of stages, music, and I found the graphics to be a tad over saturated, particularly Sonic's character model.

It's not the most popular opinion, and I don't HATE the game (not even close to it in fact) but there you go.

Since folks are talkin bout the Sawnik 2 dislikings.

I still love it, I dunno. I just see it as a massive improvement over Sonic 1 in everyway. Its a lot less slow, less clunky, refined physics, and a playable Tails. And really, Metropolis Zone is the only one that becomess frustrating, every thing else is golden to me (even Hill Top Zone which is consistently hated for some reason).

I don't really get why Hill Top Zone is getting hate...its a lot more platformy and disjointed? Yes...

Most of Sonic 3&K's levels were more platformy and disjointed though....I don't get it.

****

My most fun levels for me in Sonic 3&K were Flying Battery Zone, Hydrocity, and Ice Cap...those levels are very Sonic 2ish to me...I wish there were more levels like it in the Sonic3&K general.

For me, it has a lot less to do with the level design (Which is kind of meh, in my opinion), and more to do with the horrid music and the general laziness of it all. I mean, just look at it. It's a re-color of a re-hash in the SAME EXACT GAME. Not even Sonic 4 did that.

Wow I never even noticed that. To be fair they were on a time budget. Metropolis Act 3 was supposed to be a special single-level zone like the final three, but they ran out of time so turned what they had into a third Metropolis act.

the horrid music

What?

*******

Joking aside I didn't mind the level at all...I'm sure Sonic Team back then used samey resources on a lot of levels actually. I think Hill Top Zone is just the most obvious level, but still.

Yeah, that's true, I suppose. Though they could've at least re-used some stuff from Sonic 1 instead of repainting EHZ, but I guess that might be more work than it sounds like.

What?

The music is just too screechy, and whatever instruments they used have this really annoying whine to them. It's just... terrible, to be painfully honest, and it actually hurts my ears.

I think it's a pretty great game. Not as good as S3&K of course, but it's better than S1, and a lot better than CD.

For me it's actually the progression and variety of it all. I felt really epic going from the sky to space and stuff there at the end way back when, and while Sonic 3 and Knuckles does this on a grander scale, Sonic 2 just didn't seem as over the top with it, but that could just be me.

As for the the variety, I just really like all the different zone themes compared to the first game when it was out at the time. Oil Oceans, hills in the sky, casinos, airship, and what have you. It felt like a fresh breath of air compared to the norm of fire, ice, etc levels. I mean I'm talking from my perspective anyways, I didn't get the game day one, and I got it in 94 at the age of 4, so I do have some nostalgic bias, but nonetheless, I still hold this opinion to this day.

Over all this, I don't claim it as the holy of holies for Sonic either. It's like my favorite 2D Sonic, but compared to any other game out there, Sonic or not, it's not something I'd overrate over all other things honestly.
