I played the game without the listen mode from the very beginning and I have never noticed that.

You must be incredibly skilled at navigating in the dark and knowing whether the infected across the room is a clicker (so that you can turn on your flashlight) or a runner (in which case you shouldn't) almost instantaneously.

Regular zombies don't see the flashlight either.

Currently playing Hard mode. Just managed to stealthily sneak through the sewer section with Sam. God that's tricky because it's difficult to spot the exit with it being so dark, but very rewarding when you get it right. Now to get to the sniper....

They did when I played, or rather they see you if you're hiding in the dark across the room from them.

So just finished the uni section of the game on survival and I think I may have noticed some very subtle hints that Joel is suffering from serious mental issues or the trip is having a much bigger mental impact on Joel than we're aware of...

Or Naughty Dog are a tad lazy.

Probably the lazy, since I've spotted the exact same very well decorated desk several times in the game so far... yup the one with the Naughty dog mousemat and the videogame magazines... as well as 'travel mag'

But... there are occasions where this specific thing pops out more often... and it's really easy to miss.

Major plot spoilers ahead...

In the game, Ellie doesn't know about Joels daughter until they meet Tommy, even then, it's unclear as to how much she knows.

Right at the start when you play as his daughter, if you explore her room you can see a football, photos of her team and her dad at her games... you also spot some pretty big football trophies around her room.

During the dam sequence, Joel rejects the photo from Tommy of his daughter, and he refuses to talk to Ellie about her. He wants rid of her memory, he wants to forget, hence the whole 'can't escape your past thing' he's still got issues and is still haunted by her death.

Yet he's constantly reminded of her. In many sections of the game, when looking for items, you can find footballs, references to football, trophies for football... or items from her room pop up just prior to major combat moments, mainly with the infected, but theres the odd human encounter too.

Now whilst this might just be ND filling the game with Mise-en-scene to create a history/story of the room/building... there are times when it becomes a bit more than that.

Don't believe me?

After you enter the sewers and enter what remains of Ish's safehouse, what do the kids find? A fooball complete with a goal. They even grab the ball and play with it for a little while. Shortly after this... Joel finds the nursery... Yeah...

When you explore the neighbourhood after the sewers, again, childrens room, football posters.... garden outside, theres a football. It's also during this segment that Max tells Joel 'Kids will be kids again someday.'

Then we get Tommy's Dam and Ellie runs away... she ends up in the girls room, a room which looks like it belonged to a girl just slightly older than Joel's daughter... she reads the diary. Joel is now faced looking at Ellie reading from a book of someone whose life might have ended up being very close to his own daughters.

And then we get to the section I've just played, the University. At one point, Joel goes off on his own to activate a generator, at one point you enter a spore ridden halls. Now this section has no enemies in it... but there is one room just before the drop that looks A LOT like his daughters room. It has a football in it, and it even has the exact same sports trophies on the walls. Theres even some useful items in here, Naughty Dog wants you to search and take notice of this room. You then drop into the hallway of clickers and a bloater.

Now this room is quite interesting in particular for two reasons.

1: The university is more pro American/College Football as apposed to Soccer, yet none of the student rooms have a reference to it, it's only the large banners outside, this one room though is full of football/soccer references, some identical to the daughters.

2: I might be out of loop here, but I was under the impression that football tends to be popular with kids in America, however the popularity usually drains when they enter high school and college? yet this particular student who is also a gifted football player came to uni to study it at a place that is clearly more pro american/college football?

You want me to give my opinion from a literary standpoint? This room represents what his daughters room would have looked like had the outbreak not occured and she haddn't died.

Joel is trying to burry/escape her, but this journey is showing him the life that she and the whole of humanity had robbed from them. Joel is constantly bombarded with reminders of who his daughter was, and what she might have become had the outbreak not occured. Whilst it's very easy to say 'why yes, Ellie acts as the daughter figure' and yeah I agree she does in many ways... but when you look at the environment closer, there is a lot more going on here than you might first think.

They did when I played, or rather they see you if you're hiding in the dark across the room from them.

As for this...

It's difficult to say since Runners and stalkers are so similar, one definately does react to the light, however the other type doesn't. Only problem is that runners and stalkers tend to be in the same area so it's not always easy to tell.

Yay, just completed Hard mode for the first time. Quite a bit more challenging. You certainly have to be economical with your ammo and health items. It was still good fun and I enjoyed mastering the stealth-sneaking techniques which are a must. I'm gonna take a break from the TLOU, I mean I have done five complete playthroughs! I will try Survivor mode at some point.

I love the ending when Joel is carrying Ellie trying to escape the hospital. It's just so sad and dramatic. This really is a fantastic game. Probably my game of the year so far.

I downloaded a Joel avatar for my EU PSN account. Couldn't resist!

So I'm now on my survival+ run. After I beat this I get platinum.

The only really annoying parts were the sewers and the hospital... however in the hospital I got really lucky with a molotov which took out 6 enemies! Yeah, these things are stupidly over powered!

Anyway... If you're on a second run or even a third... I implore you... pay attention to the following.

*plot spoilers ahoy ahoy*

As I mentioned in my last post, theres a lot of reminders for Joel about his daughter, mainly to do with Sport...

However, there is so much more going on here with the environment and how it's affecting Joel, it's one hell of a character case study.

When you start the game, explore his daughters room, check out everything, not just the sport. But her music collection, the posters on the wall. Theres one in particular which she's got signed by all the band members. Theres certain toys in the room too, Look at everything.

Then when you start the game.. count the number of times something pops up. Not just the sport. But theres the section in Bills town when you go into the record shop, whats in there? A poster that was on the wall of his daughters room, this one missing the signatures, this is very significant, NG went out of their way to distinguish this theres a history to that item for both Joel and his daughter.

The movie posters, the wolf movie especially, Joel tells Ellie he went to see it before the outbreak, whilst he doesn't say with his daughter, you know he went with her when he says 'dumb teen movie.'

Now consider this... 20 years have passed since his daughter was killed. Whats happened to the world? Nothing... nothing has changed, it's just started to decay. But as you walk down the street what do you see?

Posters for the bands she had in her room.

Movie posters for the last film he took her to see.

References that appear in her room are littered all over the world, because society hasn't moved on. For 20 years Joel cannot forget her because the world is in a slow decay, he can't forget her, because the world is constantly reminding him of her. And it's damaging him... Badly.

Just think back to the woman who asks for Joel & Tess' help, does she ever strike you as being the bad guy? Even when you get to the end of the game, you find her dairy, you find recordings she's made, she doesn't want to harm Ellie, in fact one item indicates she nearly attacked the surgeon for saying that Ellie has to die.

She even lowers her gun to Joel.

At not one point in the game is she ever treated as a villain.

Biggest clue of all comes from when you play as Ellie, did you know you can look in her backpack and she has several unique artifacts/items in there? She comments on them... theres even a letter from her mother and she comments on her and the woman who has protected her all this time. Ellie trusts her and likes her. They have a bond, heck when Ellie and Joel first meet, ellie is about to stab Joel because she thinks he's going to attack her friend.

And when you hear her dialogue at the end of the game... you suddenly realised that the only hero of the whole thing, is Ellie herself.

Think about it, come the end of the game, Joel murders someone, he shoots an unarmed woman, who then begs him to spare her, he then outrightly murders her.

Now, did the fireflies have any right to perform the opperation on Ellie without her consent... No. There is no defence to that. Did Joel have any right to take her away and lie to her? No.

Ellie should have been told the truth. Because when she talks at the end of the game about 'waiting her turn' she knows she should have died. She might be suffering from survivors guilt, but there is another clue to suggest that Ellie should have been told the truth and allowed to make up her mind...

In the very last segment of the game... when you play as Ellie... theres a comic book in a picup truck... have a read of the back of it.

One thing I'm worried about is the child character.

Most child characters in games are annoying I find. I hope the one here isn't like that when I have the time and money to get it.

No spoilers please. :)

She's no Clementine, but she's still better than most game characters period, let alone child characters.

The Last of Us clothes coming soon

http://www.insertcoinclothing.com/blog/2013/07/be-a-style-survivor-with-our-new-range-inspired-by-the-last-of-us/

I want that Ellie T-shirt ohmy.png

The Last of Us Development Series #4 - Them or Us

Figured I'd drop it here as well.

I cleared the game for the third time today (survivor+) and I'm loving it. Only bad thing that I can think of is clipping and it occurs rarely, mainly while playing

as Ellie.

Oh I also experienced some slight framerate drops, anyone else?

Guess I'll play the MP for some time now. I love Silenced Semi-Auto Rifle x Shorty combo.

I like the idea of a

Twilight Dawn Of The Wolf t-shirt. Hopefully there will be a Dawn Of The Wolf 2 t-shirt as well tongue.png

I played Hard mode and then played Normal mode on new game plus. After completing Normal+ I am currently playing Hard+ and all the weapon and health upgrades that I earned in Normal+ are gone. It reset all my upgrades back to when I completed Hard mode, which is stupid.

Just got passed the Sewer level. Definitely been loving all of it so far, I feel very invested in the storyline, and the unique blend of stealth, survival horror, and action works wonders for this game. It's literally so GORGEOUS looking, seriously, environments and the character models too are so finely detailed and crafted (every time a cutscene occurs I often find myself hypnotized by Joel's amazing hair/beard combo SERIOUSLY GO LOOK AT IT ) I find myself wandering around every nook and cranny of the levels, not just for supplies but just to admire the beauty of all of it, honestly all of the quiet tender moments where it's you and Ellie having a chat are way more engaging than bashing in thugs/Clickers heads in. Can't wait to keep on playing.

Felt like leaving this here as well as in my profile status)

I don't own a Ps3 but I wanted to see what "The last of us" looks like..I ended up watching the whole playthrough in one day)), Just finished watching and I must say I'm really impressed with the game's story. Gives a lot food for thought.

Alas I've only been borrowing this and have to give it back soon but I'll certainly be picking it up again for myself when DLC arrives (assuming it's story-related).

Went in knowing nothing more than that original E3 trailer years back.  I remember thinking it looked decent but totally lost track of it afterwards, thus this was a pretty fresh experience.  Other than knowing it was about a guy escorting a girl who can hold her own, and that it was a post-apocalypse setting, I had no other ideas of what to expect.

Anyway, utterly adored it.  At first I didn't like the horror/stealth combo but as you learn the game and how it works you can make more and more educated strategies on how to tackle each set piece.  The clickers that I shat my trousers sneaking past on my first playthrough had their asses thoroughly kicked on my second runthrough now I understood that taking them on was a reasonable strategy when done intelligently (boy did I underestimate how great the bow is first time through, on my second playthrough I was constantly wishing you got ammo for it more often).

And yeah the story is totally superb.  The ending genuinely surprised me, loved it.  This may very well be in my top 10-20 games of all time.

I really just want to go ahead and start a third playthrough right now but I should be more productive with my time... maybe.

Ohhhh Kayyyyy....

My mum, really likes the show 'The Walking Dead' Heck I really like that show. We've watched both series, and we even went to Universal Studios Halloween Night and waited for over an hour and a half in florida heat just so we could go 'around' the Walking Dead haunted house ride (it was awesome!).

She really likes the Walking Dead.

Anyway. The Third Series has started here in the UK, and she comes into my room and I'm playing TLOU, it's a cut scene, an ingame one at that, not a CG one. Here is how the conversation went.

"Oh is this series any good?"

"What series?"

"The Walking Dead?"

"I havn't watched it yet."

"Well... whats that?"

She thought TLOU was The Walking Dead, you know, the live action TV show.

Now before you laugh, my mum doesn't play console games, she has a DS but mainly uses it for puzzle games and those novel type games. So for her, seeing TLOU was... kinda along the lines of, you show someone who has never seen a computer game before a C64 game, then show them... well... TLOU.

To put it another way, the game is so well made, to her, she knew that TWD series 3 was on telly, the graphics, the voice acting, the character annimations, they were so good, she thought it was a TV show that she knew existed, but haddn't yet seen.

So if you work at Naughty Dog, I think you can take that as a compliment...

Oh and... yeah...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0q3qcLkw1A

Basically, I need to now call Kevin Butler.

At first I didn't like the horror/stealth combo but as you learn the game and how it works you can make more and more educated strategies on how to tackle each set piece.  The clickers

If you go to the post I made on release date... you can actually tell where I am in the game when I saw that the infected are not scary... then the next post I say THE INFECTED ARE SCARY!
