You missed my point completely yet still managed to lay it out in front of yourself with that image. "The industry is geared to where demand is" that demand is what the Otaku are buying into on a heavy scale like you wouldn't believe, if there wasn't no fanservice/shitty anime that appeal to the masses then there would be no business to continue going on since they'd struggle to sell with the incredibly niche consumer base that only go for certain stuff. Otaku, as bad as they are, are a blessing as well as a curse, because without them there would be no market worth providing for without losing a ton of money in the process.

We probably wouldn't even have anime like TTGL or KILL la KILL if there were no demand for fanservice/ecchi, face it Yoko Litner is the face of Gurren Lagann's market, not Simon or Kamina, it will always be the red haired big boobed girl that will continue to sell the franchise, and keep milking the series for all it's worth.

You missed my point when it's right there though. Look at the animation director. And look at what the animator is saying.

Having fans is good.

Having your market consist solely of obcessed people is not.

Having your workforce be the same obcessed people is even worse.

Does the money keep rolling? Yeah. But quality drops hard.

It's the obsessed people that are buying into the market, without them there would be NO market, the other point is a double edged sword though, in turn it's good to have people who know what the masses want and can deliver, but at the same time it's kind of putting everything into an never ending cycle where it's all said studio's will produce, and on the off chance we'll get an anime that isn't marketed solely on sex or school scenarios, stuff like Attack on Titan or Black Rock Shooter, both are incredibly devoid of sex as it's main selling point.

But eh, so-so.

At the same time though fanservice animes don't get mainstream. You don't see people talk about Neptunia the Anime as much as they do AoT.

But Fanservice anime is still in the masses, it may not be mainstream (or w/e that's supposed to mean) here, but it still gets a lot of attention in it's homeland. The only reason we don't make it popular is because people are sick of all the samey anime with the same generic characters, same school story same tropes, people are actively looking for something that's different, and when they think they find something different it normally ends up devolving into some shitty fanservice crap anyway, on the off rare chances it doesn't i.e. Attack on Titan.

Fan service anime doesn't get a lot of attention in Japan, just like soft-porn doesn't in the West.

It's in the masses because they can make easy money off it and almost always are direct to DVD so they'd buy them.

We don't make it popular because it's seen as degrading crap.

Out of 200+ anime that came out last year, does it really not make you think why Attack on Titan was a rare off-chance? Because it wasn't something that only otaku would find interest in. A lot of time, effort and money was put into the animation, so much so that the characters had to remain static a lot when talking to save money for the big action sequences. They took the time to see beyond the otaku culture and make something aimed at a wide audience and not just to please otaku, hence our original point.

Miyazaki is a fool then, because without the otaku's who lap his shit up, anime wouldn't be a popular nor as profitable as it is this day in age, and he wouldn't be sitting pretty in his position right now without his consumer base, so that statement is also laughable too.

You think that otaku are the consumer base who make Miyazaki's films successful? xD

That's like saying that Disney films are primarily successful due to a niche group of American manchildren.

I wasn't even referring to Miyazaki's movies, more so just the general anime consensus, episodic series, not full feature length movies, christ.

Yet it still has an incredibly large market base with it's merchandise? It's not just about the anime series, but about the market too, which is still, providing for the Otaku who collect it. Also I highly doubt AoT is aimed at a wider audience when it's subject matter is questionable to the viewer anyway.

Again, I think you're not taking 'otaku' as it's meant to be. It's not anime fan, it's obsessed person. Attack on Titan is aimed at a general audience of people who liked the manga, like action anime, etc. Not specifically at otaku.

The otaku market is a bad market to invest in. Because otaku's grow older and won't grow as a market as time goes on. They shrink, while anime that is mainstream is able to still grow.

And even then, the only thing that sustains much of the modern anime market is that their products are so bloody overpriced, thus shutting off the mainstream anime viewer; but this market is so easily prone to bursting that it's not funny. It's one of the reasons reverse importation is a big fear in the anime industry.

This business was established in the 80s and 90s; and really worked for the short OVa's that were released on video and were considered "collector's items". But OVA's dissapeared as this market shrunk and were unable to sustain how fucking expensive they were to make. And the anime series that followed could only get cheaper as this market shrunk as well.

Now look at most anime; fanservice laden bullshit that can't look as good as they could because it's just too expensive to use the best studios anymore, and there aren't enough otaku around with deep enough wallets to pay for all these many series.

One of the things that have definitely have been changing in response to this is the expansion of anime worldwide. Studios are trying their best to have their series dubbed or streaming so they can desperately expand their audience without losing their otaku audience.

This fragile bubble burst long ago in America, when we had the anime crash in the mid 2000's and it's just waiting to burst in Japan. The sooner it does, the better it will be for a recovery.

Hello, Hi. yo, *waves hands* I'm an otaku and probably one of the most down to earth, "normal" people you could ever imagine to meet, so this statement is both laughable and insulting to the culture when you're basically labelling something you don't have a clue about, as a bad thing and just following what the negative side of the Otakubase brings (which is heavily out weighed by decent people who just like anime and it's merchandise, ala me).

I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to offend you and it was wrong for me to generalize.

Well, considering anime is just another form of cartoons, I don't see the problem if the show isn't realistic from time to time.

But that's the thing; a lot of them are not realistic from time to time. The majority of them are animated unrealistically and fairly cheaply (outside of fanservice and fight scenes). You'd have a point if there was more of a balance, but there really isn't.

Then again, I just see anime as another source of entertainment. If I wanted to watch realistic characters doing realistic things, I'd watch live-action drama.

There's a difference between unrealistic scenarios and unrealistic characters that can look gangly at times.

So, Rosario + Vampire ended....talk about a cop out.

And talk about a lovely episode of Space Dandy to compensate for the cop out.

He really is a dandy guy.

Anyone ever read the manga "Manhole"? It's like this awesome detective story about a disease spread through worms and it's all just really fascinating. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in detective stories or disease-based ones.

Funimation's gonna premier the English Dub of Attack on Titan at Anime Boston (March 21-23)

This better be an amazing dub. If it's anything like FMA (one of the few dubs I actually enjoyed more than the Japanese one yea I know), I might watch Attack on Titan in English instead of Japanese! And who knows, it could work out better since most of the characters in the anime are meant to be of European heritage.

To their credit, Funimation generally does a good job with their dubs so there's hope.

Speaking of which. Attack on Titan is a series I need to get around to watching since I've heard a lot of good things about it. Hopefully they will show the dub at Anime a Weekend Atlanta as well.
