[COMMUNITY PROJECT | BOARD GAME] Sonic Monopoly

This is a pretty awesome idea. But I do have a question. Should the properties be realistic for in-universe (IE Park Place and Boardwalk would be ritzy locations in Sonic's world) or more in the way of locations that are the most iconic or popular (Like Green Hill Zone)?

So... some of the properties are gonna be pretty obvious (Boardwalk = Green Hill). But...

What levels does everyone hate so much that it will be one of the shitbox purple ones?

Eggman's face should be on the money :V

Also, there's also those ads in city stages that could maybe be used for things.

Wouldn't it make more sense for EggmanLand to be the income tax?

10% or 200 or your lives.

Chaotix Detective Fee: Pay 50 Rings

Also, Jail should either be Prison Island or one of Eggman's Capsules

They could be used on the Chance/Community Chest cards.

Here's a list of the originals:

http://monopoly.wikia.com/wiki/Community_Chest

http://monopoly.wikia.com/wiki/Chance

To keep the game fair and balanced I think ideally we'd want to have the cards with the same effects, but infuse Sonic into them.

So for example: You have been elected chairman of the Chaos Soda board – pay each player $50

Something a bit more creative than that, but you get what I mean.

As for the four corners, I was thinking:

• GO = Ready? GO!

• In Jail/Just Visiting = Prison Island/Just Visiting

• Free Parking/??? (any ideas?)

• Go To Jail/Go To Prison Island (G.U.N. bot)

My idea for game pieces: Chaos Emerald, Ring, Monitor, Sonic Shoes, Sign Post, Star Post

If Rings are the currency, I'd shy away from making it a piece. Same goes for monitors if they became the community chest. Star post and sign post are a bit too alike, but either would be awesome.

Taking a look at the old pieces:

faceoff-monopoly-pieces.jpg

I could easily see Sonic's Shoe, Froggy, and an Egg Fleet ship as pieces. Knuckle's hat would be great! But it's not from the game's, its from the OVA...

When I say sign post I mean the one's at the end of the level. I think they're different enough from Star Posts.. If no monitor, then an Animal Capsule.

And about currency: Aren't bills used? Rings would be kind of weird there.

Didn't we talk about this a week or two ago in the status updates?

Anyway it sounds like an awesome idea, definately fancy lending a hand or two.

For the 4 stations, instead of trying to find 4 train levels, could we not find 4 different transport types? e.g.

Station Square - Train.

Tornado - Airline

Death Egg - Space

either the boat thing from Tails Adventure or something from Sonic Rush Adventure - Sea.

It might just make the board look a bit more interesting other than trying to pick 4 stages/areas that are train themed.

For one of the board pieces, how about the Bouncy Barrell in place of the thumb nail?

I made a status once stating that Sonic needs a Monopoly game (Nintendo has one!).

The trains... yeah, now that you mention it, having them be trains from the games does take away from some cooler locations/concepts. Initially I was thinking islands: Angel, South, Westside, Cocoa but that leaves out the modern side of things.

Air, Sea, Space and Land (train) is an interesting idea. Though I'd swap out the tornado for something larger. Perhaps Angel Island or Egg Fleet? Let the Tornado be a game piece or a chance/communtiy chest card?

And about currency: Aren't bills used? Rings would be kind of weird there.

Bills are used, but instead of the $ sign, replace it with the ring symbol. So a $100 bill would be a O100 bill

You could use the Egg Carrier for an air theme if you want to use the Tornado for something else, possibly.

As for game pieces, Sonic's sneaker and a Chaos Emerald could be the best choices. Maybe a glove too, since every main character wears a pair? Maybe a Motobug Badnik for iconic flavor? Sonic's vehicle in either All-Stars Racing or the SA2 racing minigame? ON that note, maybe Eggman's robo-walker in the same game? A Past/Future signpost? A Flicky? There's a lot of options, lol.

Radical Train definitely should be the train one. Either that or Sunset Park boss.

I strongly suggest for the Electric Company to be Wacky Workbench. I mean it's more iconic than Electric Egg right?

The most expensive properties could be some glitzy city levels such as the casino ones or even Speed Highway. The earliest properties that are really shit could be run down levels like Westopolis and Lethal Highway from Shadow. Crisis City would be slightly further up as it has better music and is a more exciting place to live :P

This is a fantastic idea! I really can't wait to see where this goes.

Though, why not make the game pieces some of the more important characters?

Thanks,

I figure do as past Monopoly games have done and use items as pieces rather than characters. Some monopoly games use animals, but in the Sonic universe they're all animals, so I'd think characters like a Flicky or Froggy would be fitting.

Of course, we could easily have a set of character pieces, and classic Monopoly-style item pieces, so players can choose one set or the other.

As for properties, I think it would be best if we decide on how they'll be grouped, and then everything will fall into place. There are three ways we could go, one of which I think is the ideal way to go:

1 - group properties based on tropes: this could get boring, as four sides to the board = only four tropes. plus, it could make each side very samey. all ice on one side, all forest on another.

2 - group properties based on proximity: this could get hairy, as we'd surely delve into fighting amonst ourselves as to how close Green Hill is to, say, Casino Night or Holaska. Since SEGA has never given an official map, I say no to this one.

* 3 - group properties based on games/eras: This is the one I'm a fan of. We could easily cover the whole main series by having one side devoted to Sonic 1&2, one side devoted to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, one side devoted to Sonic Adventure 1,2& Heroes, and one side devoted to '06, Unleashed and Colors. Gives classic and modern a 50/50 split, allows for a variety of tropes on each side, and groups locations with other locations of similar era/storyline.

Whatever you place as the first property I will be replacing with the Chaotix HQ. I'm sorry, that must be as run-down as you can get.

That, or I'll just make an extra space for it.

*shrug*

Chaotix HQ would actually work great as a utility, since you pass a utility spot and pay a bill (water/electric) in the original game. So in Sonic Monopoly, if you land on the Chaotix spot you pay their detective fee.

Would just need to think of something for the other utility, but I like that as an idea far more than making a zone a utility.
