[COMMUNITY PROJECT | BOARD GAME] Sonic Monopoly

I've got the whole board design taken care of. I'm a bonafide dee-signer with all the fancy applications. ;)

Eventually, however, we'll be getting to money and board graphics. Ideally, I'd want quality in-game screens for each property, without any characters or score/time info in the frame. Just environmental shots.

The money could use official art, but if an artist with skills who can make crosshatched money looking art wants to come forward, they're welcome to do so. :)

Power Plant's the best choice for Electric Company, but I think Tidal Tempest would be better as Water Works than Hydrocity.

I think the stations should be SS Central Station, Mystic Ruins Station, Soleanna New City Station and Sunset Park Station.

About the power company/water works.

Do we have to find a water themed level or an electric company type level? A lot of the specialist monopoly boards don't have these, they replace them with something more appropriate to the theme. E.g. the beetles monopoly board replaces these squares with Stadiums, they're the exact same value/fine, but just a different theme.

Could we not look for alternatives which are more Sonic related?

I suggested bubble/lightning shields, those could work.

That would be quite cool, I was thinking something like special stage varients, or looking for stages that are themed around something, theres usually gambling/casinos, quite sure theres been a funfair or some kind of circus.

I just, don't think we should try and mix and match stuff up exactly since theres so much in the Sonic series that does a similar job that would have a bit more recognition.

I think we should avoid stages/zones for the utilities. Save those for properties. Looking at other franchise Monopoly games, they take inspiration from goods/services that one would pay for within the franchises respective, or in-universe companies/groups that may charge a tax.

Seinfeld has The Human Fund, Comedy Club Tickets, Peaches and Pendant Publishing

Simpsons has the mafia tax, nuclear power plant, rebuilding the dam

So in the case of Sonic, we really should look at anything that takes away rings, like getting hurt by an enemy, a skill shop or getting all Eggman's on a slot machine. So, for example:

Casino Night Slots - $150

Badnik Attack (image of Sonic losing rings) - $200

Chaotix Detective Fee - $150

Skill Shop - $75

As for the railroads, I think Hogfather has it right. Eggman's vehicles should really be the focus of those. They're a big part of the games and have to be worked in somehow. We could select one from each era: Genesis, Dreamcast, post-Dreamcast and Current Gen. For example:

Giant Mech

Egg Viper

Egg Emperor

Egg Dragoon

Or we could cover land, sea, air and space with Eggman's inventions.

I don't understand the point in not leaving the train stations as train stations.

While train stations are a possibility, there are also far more important things not getting representation that could take their place. Like Eggman boss vehicles. Or Eggman battle stations, like Egg Carrier, E.G.G. Station, Death Egg and Final Fortress (though I think those are better suited for the more expensive properties, if we equate price with zone progression).

Another possibility could be, as I think Hogfather has mentioned, Eggman's vehicles/bases covering air, space, sea and land.

---

regarding game pieces, turns out the max is 12 (I thought it was 9), so I thought it might be a good plan to select one (or two) item(s) from each main series title for a piece. Some ideas:

Sonic 1 - Motobug, Signpost

Sonic 2 - Animal Capsule, Tornado

Sonic 3 - Barrel (of doom!)

Sonic & Knuckles - Master Emerald

Sonic Adventure - Froggy

Sonic Adventure 2 - SOAP Shoe

Sonic Heroes - Cheese

Sonic '06 - Egg Carrier

Sonic Unleashed - Moon Medal

Sonic Generations - Skateboard

HA! I like those. Maybe less inside jokes, but still a lot of good ones. I like the more subtle mentions to characters and locations, like "liquid beast" instead of straight up saying Perfect Chaos.

It you'd prefer to have no names mention in the cards, then I could easily change this one...

  • You defeated Dr Eggman - collect 150 Rings

    Into...
    • You defeated a mustachioed madman - collect 150 Rings

It could mean Eggman, Eggman Nega and even Capt. Whiskers. It makes things less personal and might help give the impression that the players, themselves are a character from the franchise. Even Dr. Eggman.

I'm gonna try to write one for each card. I kept them in the same order as in my other post, so as to figure out which is which, while not filling up this post with extra long sentances to say which is what...

      Community Chest Cards:

      • You learned Chaos Control - Advance to Sign Post (Collect 200 Rings)
      • Rescued small animals from a capsule - Collect 200 Rings
      • Ambushed by Badniks - Pay 50 Rings
      • Rescued annoying fan girl - Collect 50 Rings
      • Befriended a strange robot - Collect prison key card
      • You've been framed by a faker. Go to Prison Island – Go directly to Prison Island – Do not pass Sign Post, do not collect 200 Rings
      • Interstellar amusement park grand opening – Collect 50 Rings from every player
      • Located a Chaos Emerald - Collect 100 Rings
      • Located a ancient robot on the beach - Collect 20 Rings
      • You outrun an avalanche on a snowboard - Collect 100 Rings
      • Crashed the prototype Tornado Plane - Pay hospital fee of 100 Rings
      • Pay Chao Garden tax of 150 Rings
      • Located a piece of the Master Emerald - Collect 25 Rings
      • City attacked by ugly gray aliens - Make street repairs – 40 Rings per house, 115 Rings per hotel
      • Won a mini game in a dream world - Collect 10 Rings
      • Your race has been wiped out by an angry liquid beast. You inherit 100 Rings
      • Saved the universe with your past self - Collect 10 Rings from each player

      Chance Cards:

[*]Advance to Sign Post (Collect 200 Rings)

[*]Hitched a ride on a rocket - Advance to Death Egg - if you pass Sign Post, collect 200 Rings

[*]Tricked into advancing to nearest [utility] If unowned, you may buy it from the Bank. If owned, throw dice and pay owner a total ten times the amount thrown.

[*]Boss Battle time! - Advance to the nearest Egg Vehicle and pay owner twice the rental to which he/she is otherwise entitled so he/she doesn't obliterate you. If Egg Vehicle is unowned, you may buy it from the Bank. (There are two of these.)

[*]Unlocked Level Select - Advance to [insert level here] – if you pass Sign Post, collect 200 Rings

[*]Entered a Special Stage - Collect 50 Rings

[*]Befriended a strange robot - Collect prison key card - this card may be kept until needed, or traded/sold

[*]Egg Robo grabs you while flying an Egg Mobile - Go back 3 spaces

[*]You've been framed by a faker. Go to Prison Island – Go directly to Prison Island – Do not pass Sign Post, do not collect 200 Rings

[*]A bomb wielding duck has gone wild - Make repairs on all your property – for each house pay 25 Rings – for each hotel 100 Rings

[*]Landed on spikes - Lose 15 Rings

[*]Had a sudden urge for mass gambling – Advance to Casino Night - if pass Sign Post collect 200 Rings

[*]Felt nostalgic – advance token to Green Hill

[*]Organized a Sega AllStars event - Collect 50 Rings from every player

[*]You defeated a mustachioed madman - collect 150 Rings

[*]Located a hidden big ring at a sercret area - collect 100 Rings

Some still need work, but once your set on the locations you want to include, I imagine it'll be easier. You can use any of these if you want. That's why they're here, after all. wink.png

I was trying to find a way to get other characters referanced. I managed with Bean, but I was also aiming for Bark and Nack/Fang.

Fang could be worked in via a "You've earned your bounty, collect 150 rings"

I like these, btw! of course, once properties are selected, some might change. :)

And now for the part that people have been dreading or looking forward to, the properties! Now before you skim through them, a few things to keep in mind:

There were many ways people recommended I go about this: value based on in-universe worth or value based on stage placement. Some thought I should lump together like zones/stages. In the end, I did a bit of all three. As the right column shows, I did follow stage progression AND I lumped like stages together. As it turned out, a lot of games place certain tropes at certain points in the game. Sometime I ran into a trio of tropes where one was an earlier stage and two were at around the same point in their respective games AND matched their placement on the board. Instead of sloppily put, say two water stages with a fire stage, I went with a water stage that may be from earlier in a game, but totally fits with the grouping. I also tried to keep each grouping not stuck in one era, trying to mix up Genesis, last gen and current gen.

Given that there are eleven main series games and 22 properties in monopoly, I gave two properties per game. This was what took the longest, so in that regard simply going back in and making a ton of changes will take a lot of work.

F0Jdz.png

If anybody wants to give a go, please do so. Getting an even mix from each game is a real challenge! But I'd be interested to see what people come up with.

Looks pretty good so far, not to sure on some of the desert/hot themed levels though, just wonder if Dusty Desert should get replaced with Crisis City? If only to vary it a little?

Also I had a thought.

One of the more famous cards is "You've inheritted £100!" It was on the adverts for the game when I was growing up, and I think it's one of the highest reward cards you can pick up....

So what about this...

"You've found the computer room! Collect 100 rings!"

Swapping Dusty Desert with Crisis City is a good idea. They're from the same game, so no shuffling would need to be done. It would fit with the orange/red hot trope. It's not a desert, but I think it works. Also, it's Sonic's fourth stage in the game and the third spot on the board.

Also, I like that card idea, lol

Well, I'm not sure why anyone would want to buy Crisis City.

Ha ha, anyway, nice job picking stages. I like the way it's organized as well. If I had something to contribute, I would, but for the moment I'm just here to say "good job."

I have a question. I know you said you wanted to use shots of backgrounds for main properties, but will you also be using screen shots for the Egg vehicles?

I only ask because I suddenly remembered I did an Egg Emperor sketch years ago, and never did anything with it. If you wanted something like that, I could finally give it some colour and a "professional" look to it.

eggemperorbydanfield.jpg

On the other hand, if you wanted to use screen shots too. It could be tricky to get them without characters and score/rings/time. Like this one.

320pxheroeseggemp.png

While it is possible to get one of EE on the 3DS version, it just doesn't look as good...

sonicgenerations218.jpg

I like this one best, but you might want to cut the line of dialogue out...

eggemperor1.jpg

On to something else. I don't know how somebody "rips" material from a game,(although I'd love to learn) the classic games have been done again and again.

I found a website with background images of levels from Sonic 1, 2, 3, CD & Knuckles. They don't appear to be random either, they have a system of images that seem to follow the layout of that original level. So, if you wanted a shot of Green Hill, you could choose an image of the ground flat or a shot with a loop in it or a cave you can locate. Lots of different options if you haven't already found the images you want to use...

Sonic The Hedgehog Levels - http://bghq.com/bgs....m=gen&game=s/s1

Sonic CD levels - http://bghq.com/bgs....=gen&game=s/scd

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Levels - http://bghq.com/bgs....m=gen&game=s/s2

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Levels - http://bghq.com/bgs....m=gen&game=s/s3

Sonic & Knuckles Levels - http://bghq.com/bgs....m=gen&game=s/sk

They also have bgs from Sonic Advance 1, 2 & 3.

Getting images of 3D levels would be more challenging...

I don't particually think it matters too much if there was additional characters in the images, what you'd need to remember is that the pics would be shrunk down so they fit on the board.

Although it does bring up an issue as to if the pics should be of the entire boss or a close up of it's main feature. The text on that particular tile will more than cement what it is so even if something is missing, when you see the machine and the text the connection is made.

I'd think an Egg Emporer model rip would be out there. Those stage images are great! Thanks! As for 3D stages, it should be easy to find images with Sonic obscured or I can easily photoshop him out.

A bit of an update:

Awesome news! I was thinking I'd have to start from scratch when it came to making the board, but the internet is an amazing place. I found a site that provides a complete photoshop file of a Monopoly board! Everything can be edited, and it's print size. All the fonts are included. So the board portion should take much shorter than I thought it would.

Started on the board! This is a work in progress, of course, but I thought I'd share images whenever I can.

It looks great, not sure about the word 'Salary' if that can be helped.

One thing I would change, swap the positions of Chemical plant & Metal Harbor. MH & GM look very similar together, I think that Chemical plant in place of metal harbor would break it up a little.

Just a quick edit.

Thanks all! I like that suggestion, Hogfather. Made the switch and deleted "salary".
