level_sidescroller_2__color_variant__by_

A digitally-colored version of my second level sidescroller drawing.

I tried a new approach to coloring this in, which I'm very pleased with the end result-instead of tracing the lines and then coloring it in, I merely colored it in with the marker, giving it a look similar to that of a (watercolor?) painting. I personally think the "painting" apporach also gives the drawing a semi-surreal look to the image. The Sky Sanctuary influences are (unintentionally) more unsubtle here.

Original drawing (spoilered for size) for comparison's sake.

I can see a wonderful level of imagination and detail in your scenery art developing over time.  Nice stuff!

I know about a month ago I decided to take on drawing some member's avatars just for fun. I'll admit that I had put it off for a while, as I'd been doing other stuff (learning some coding, watching films, coloring the SSMB banner I'm working on, etc.). I also at first decided to draw them on paper, but then I switched that out for doing it on Photoshop Elements. I'd like to note that this doesn't mean I've stopped with it, and as proof I spent most of my night drawing and coloring this (this one's for you, Can of Nothing!).

More on the way.

Dood!! You stole my idea!? XD

I'm just kidding. lol But you did beat me in drawing Can of Nothing. He'd look good next to Cola. I have noticed a difference in how your line art looks compared to mine. Do you use one of those drawing tablets? I never could get used to them. I just ended up using the pen tool. (I also use Photoshop. Sometimes Paint Tool Sai.)

Good job on everything, keep it up. smile.png

Actually the drawing members thing is nothing more than a slew of avatars I'd said I would draw when I asked which member's avatar I  should do in the statuses in July. I don't think I was aware of your idea of drawing most if not all members of the SSMB, which far outnumbers what I've done and what I plan to do.

And yes, I use a drawing tablet.  Wacom Bamboo Capture to be exact, I got it a few months ago.

W-whoa, I forgot to actually comment about that! Thanks - It's always interesting to see others' interpretation of the design. Interesting way you drew the top - looks like a reasonable compromise between my style and the realistic norm, actually. Thanks, bud - I love it!

And yes, I would look good around Cola~ >:3

level_sidescroller_3__color_variant__by_

level_sidescroller_3__original__by_yeow9

The digitally-colored variant of the original third level sidescroller drawing (spoilered above). A lot of detail went into this. I experimented with a new brush for the grass and water particles, and used a combination of the "watercolor painting" technique I used for my color variant (which I think helps, as the original drawing was supposed to have a "watercolor"-esque visual feel from the backgrounds of the 1995 The Wind in The Willows TV adaptation) of the colored variant of my Level Sidescroller 2 image for essentially everything, aside from Tab (the bowtie guy I previously called Marlowe in past descriptions) and his yellow boat. Tab and his boat in contrast have more solid colors, shading/light reflection, and black outlining. There are some changes from the original namely with Tab's actions/facial expressions and the design of the boar and the bush on the right. Otherwise most of everything is the same from the original drawing.

This may be the last level sidescroller drawing I would color for a while, I want to focus more on drawing characters and get through the avatars I promised to draw back in July (time sure does fly, doesn't it?).

EDIT: I've since removed the individual parts of the pics and replaced them with a single pic that features them all, check here to see it.

And now for something rather different. I've been planning to upload these for some time now.

*pics now removed*

What is all this? These four pictures are a series of maps of concept art level design I did a year ago. These four represent the level map of an entire "act" (and the beginning of a second act) of a "zone" (Apogee Armada), named after with the level trope taking place on an aerial ship (yeah yeah, another influence from the Genesis Sonic games. I should play more non-Sonic games...). Although not doing much unique or interesting in terms of level hazards, enemies, and even background visuals, I think it makes up for it in terms of level design, it supposed to be modeled after level maps of acts from Genesis Sonic games in terms of exploration, multiple level paths, and secret paths (although this doesn't feature any standard game collectables like "coins"/"rings" and whatnot). This act focuses on traveling through an airship and the (rather thick) clouds surrounding it, before encountering a boss and traveling to the next act. You can read some more about these acts (namely how what's going on in their respective parts, the change in weather throughout the act, what some of the level hazards are, and -in the case of the fourth part- the boss) on their dA pages:

*links also now removed*

The rest of Act II and Act III will be uploaded in the future.

Art dump.

platformer_concept_5_by_yeow95-d6qkhbl.j

A fifth piece of platformer concept art (previously known as level sidescroller). This level trope is a foundry-factory combination / "Eternal Engine."

alien_planet___space_concept_by_yeow95-d

A concept art piece for an alien planet / space. This was originally supposed to be designed like a platformer like previous art though, but then I started adding a bunch of random stuff without keeping the platformer design mentality I started out with.

tab_enemy_concept_by_yeow95-d6qknpb.jpg

A bunch of "videogame" enemies I drew for Tab (the guy in the cape).

Yes, it's supposed to be weird, the setting (added after the characters were drawn) is supposed to reinforce this.

Just in time for All Hallow's Eve! A take on graveyard and haunted house level settings with Marlowe.

platformer_concepts_6_and_7_by_yeow95-d6

I decided that rather than fill up one page of one trope, I'd split it in half and try two. The top is supposed to be from a 2D perspective, whereas the bottom is a more 3D-ish perspective.

I'd like to color these two pictures in sometime, October or no October.

No art today, but a update about my SSMB avatar project to those who haven't seen it in the statuses.

Originally I was going to do individual avatars as part of my SSMB avatar project, but I'll shamefully admit I drifted away from it as it took a looooong time drawing another individual avatar.

I'm going to go back to The Eleventh Doctor's original plan of drawing everyone in one big drawing. I won't be necessarily drawing the avatars in their poses themselves but the characters. Thinking about making it a bit humorous or themed on a holiday or party.

I think I'm also going to try and stop scanning outlines/drawings from this point forward.

^ This is the last drawing I planned to color that was drawn on lined paper. All colored drawings afterward will be based on drawings on white sheets of paper.

But with that said, I want to find a program that supports using vectors so I can drawn smoother lines (that preferably aren't a pain the ass to color in as well). None of the programs I use (PSE atm) or used (Paint.NET, Sketchbook Express '11, MS Paint (:U) ) come to mind as doing the above.

Also updated my OP with some of this newer art.

So I've been using out a trial for Paint Tool SAI, which is great so far-it's very helpful for me when it comes to tracing my drawings for lineart. I hope to purchase it soon.

^ This drawing of Tab was a test run I did before working on another drawing, which I hope to finish and upload tomorrow (which, considering how late I've stayed up tonight, will actually be later today >_<).

Splash Hill Zone Redux Color

Behold, it's Sonic 4's Splash Hill Zone. As you've never truly imagined it.

Anyway, from this point I want to start drawing and coloring more characters and game/level design concepts. There's also the fact I need to get around to finishing the avatar collab I announced last year and draw up the background ideas for Dan-ime for his SSMB project.

  • 4 weeks later...

Was actually going to show this stuff presumably tomorrow (or later into next week), but I'll be on a trip tomorrow and will be gone all day. Here goes.

I said earlier (previous post, actually) that I wanted to draw more characters, and finish that SSMB avatar request (why did I call it a collab earlier? I'm not collaborating with anyone to do this...). And to show that wasn't a fluke (and show what I've done so far at the very least), workprint of Part I (Workprint? Part I? See description below, but check out the image first).

ssmb_avatar_requests_part_i__workprint__

This one was a doozy.

I'm pretty disappointed that after starting this back in July (so some of the requests may be outdated by now, but yeah) and in a sense rebooting it in December this is all I have to show. As the original paper had long deterioirated and I was running out of room, I decided to split it into parts and I plan to get the other avatar requests I said I would do in later parts. And as one can note in the title, I'm calling this a workprint version. Currently working on a digital "final" version that will look cleaner and make some changes. (And no, none of these are traced.)

Avatars / requests made by:

Enderwoman - Samus (hardest character for me to draw, admittedly-and because I didn't have much space to work with, I ended up having her squatting in some way?! I'm definitely going to try and get rid of that in the final version, I don't like it.)

Dr. Homem - Dr. Homem (though he actually requested Shrek, but that will be in part II)

Joker/Starscream  - Joker (in case you're wondering, yes there is a sharp thingy in his pie) : )

Spin Attaxx - Classic Sonic (back when he used a classic Sonic avatar, though I'm going to see if I can get his Jessica character in part II)

The Eleventh Doctor - The Eleventh Doctor (I don't really draw "realistic" humans, so if anything's off yeah).

Can of Nothing - Can of Nothing (though I did do his character already/separately, back when I was going to draw everyone's character individually)

Soniman - Megaman

---

Now with the above said, I was nonetheless drawing a level trope I've been wanting to do for a (mountains/forests, with the cloudy/rainy atmosphere), so here's Concept Platformer 6 9 10 (also a workprint version).

platformer_concept_6__workprint__by_yeow

Practiced some shading techniques here so it would look more...natural/realsitic, I guess, only the grass in the foreground is the only portion not shaded. Some additional/secretive info spoilered below.

This is also designed to be more like a videogame level-you have floating platforms, and a rock near a wall that's actually hide a secret underground passageway (along with a sign that indicates so). The platform up top is supposed to have a pushable that the player can push onto the edge. The weight of the boulder will fall on the rock below, and both will break apart to reveal the passageway. The lamppost is in sorts a hint on what's there. And if one looks closely enough, one can see shapes on the distant mountains on the right. Those are supposed to be erected paths of level design, presumably part of a different level within the same location.

---

Last but not least, Wynnie. A female character I've been drawing for a while (and also in my avvie), supposed to be a companion to Marlowe (for what? i dunno. storyline ideas....I guess.).

I have no idea where to post this, but hey. A hypothetical take I did on a Sonic level. Part of something I was doing for a thread at the Sega Forums (Old trope, new level. Invent and describe by Nieves). Slightly revised from the original post.

A level that appears to be yet your typical "green and sunny" paradise, but everything feels...off, and "incomplete." In actuality it's a former paradise transformed into a trap by Eggman, who has done a half-hearted job to disguise the zone in it's original form as a means to fool and capture Sonic's unsuspecting animal buddies.

- Realistic-looking "water(falls)" that are actually very slippery glass that has some sort of liquid substance flowing in it. Oddly enough, it acts like a magnet for Sonic, in which he can run up/down the "waterfalls". Some areas have a bunch of jagged areas of "water" that act as spikes.
- Other areas of "water" are harmless-looking pools that actually turns out to be toxic waste. In a strange twist, the toxic waste doesn't slow you down or lower your jump height, but they deplete your ring count very quickly (a la Generations's Super forms).
- "Trees" that happen to have "coconuts" fall directly where you're standing. The size of these coconuts are half the size of Sonic. Some of these "coconuts" have a weird tendency to shoot projectiles at you and/or roll towards you, and release animals when they are cracked open.
- Other "trees" have "hatches" that when pushed on, open and transport Sonic through thick "branches" to other "trees."
- "Grass", "trees", and other "shrubbery" that looks to be made of plastic.
- "Rocks" that when broken fall apart to reveal a bear trap waiting for someone to activate it (and if Sonic is unlucky to fall on top of it, it will activate). Interestingly, you won't find any ground badniks (we'll get to those in a second) around these things. These "rocks" may also be pushed away to reveal mechanical work on the land.
- Unusually low-hanging "clouds" that house a badnik or two and look like balloons.
- "Vines" that have wires sticking out of them and "leaves" that rotate not unlike fans.
- "Backgrounds" of the landscape that rarely "glitch" and reveal the original landscape entwined with mechwork. Can also be used to sometimes reveal hidden rooms/areas in the land.
- Areas of the level that look like part of the landscape on the outside, but when entered inside are made up of machinery and/or are cages/traps. Some of the cages/traps may already have captured some animals, in which Sonic can proceed to break the cages/traps and free them.
- Other platforms/background of the level can have obvious robotic parts poking out of them, or be blatantly made up of machinery with paint thrown on them to match the visuals of the environment. Paint cans, paintbrushes, and other things may be left around levels.

Badniks

- Sleuthsloth - A "sloth" that hangs on tree branches and vines, and depending on Sonic's distance from it either shoots it's claws at him or tries to smack him by extending one of it's arms in a semi-circle fashion. Some even appear from the clouds. Some Sleuthsloths, move quite slow, others not some much.
- Mechapecka - A "woodpecker" that "pecks" on some trees, causing "splinters" that can fall on Sonic and hurt him. They can climb up/down trees in an attempt to avoid him, although they can only do this when they aren't "pecking" on trees.
- Boombunny - A "rabbit" that hauls "carrots" at Sonic once he is within a certain distance, and then charge towards him. Interesting to note that most "carrots" tend to explode upon impact with whatever they touch. Other "carrots" don't explode until a few seconds later.
- Enemole - A "mole" that hides within craters in the ground and leap towards Sonic. A few of them like to position themselves near level hazards and bottomless pits.
- Sprayfish - A "pufferfish" that inhales a lot of "water", and then spits it out like a fountain towards Sonic. They sometimes leap towards you too if the platform Sonic's standing is close enough to another area of "water," so that they end up landing there whether they hit their target or not. Some Sprayfish located on bodies of "water" beneath bridges also shoot the "water" as projectiles at Sonic.
- Skillcrane - A "crane" that has an unusually large mouth. Some stand on the ground, other fly in the air or hide in the clouds. If Sonic leaps into a mouth of a Skillcranes, they usually hold you in for a bit, rotate their heads to a random direction (out of five), and shoot Sonic out of their mouths in that direction like a cannonball. Their mouths only work in a semi-circle fashion, meaning whatever direction their mouths don't cover is their weak spot. Like Enemoles, a few tend to position themselves near hazards.
- Repeatile - A "snake" that uses it's far-reaching tongue to strike Sonic-repeatedly. If Sonic moves away from them, they will slither after you and try again. Repeatiles come in different colors and hide in areas that correspond to them as a means of camoflauge.

I'd think I'd like to take another stab at this sometime in the near future with another level trope, presumably a casino one...

Platformer Concept 11 Workprint. This one is the first one digitally drawn and I made sure to add in little details as I would my traditional drawings. Also added some stuff so that it would look more like a videogame screenshot, there's a HUD, a type of in-game collectable currency (basically a cross between Sonic's rings and Mario's coins), and a enemy (a bee on patrol).

endgametabedit_by_yeow95-d7d1zsa.png

Also a colored sketch I did of Tab, "endgame" version. As one can tell by the scars and lack of one hand (now replaced by a cannon), he's been through a lot, yet it's called endgame because I envision this is what he would look like before some ultimate enemy/final boss of sorts.

Sketch of two of my OCs, Wynnie and Marlowe. Not much to say about this one, other than I'm experimenting with round circle eyes. That and Wynnie's right hand was a pain to draw.

Oh and 50th post. Yay.
