[ARTWORK] Milo's Museum

Recommended Posts

NOTE. The following (sans spoiler at the end) is an updated version of my original OP showcasing my latest artwork. To see my original post (and the context of the first few posts on the first page), please check spoiler below.

Thanks for dropping in to my art topic! My main topics of interest are concept artwork of level themes for videogames and OCs, and I'm hoping to try branching out in comics based on my OCs in the future. I also used to animate on Flash sprite battles with Sonic characters (in fact, that was the original reason why this topic was created. As you may get from the first two replies, they...weren't too great), but I've generally stopped doing those in favor of drawing.

I don't update this much nowadays, so I recommend checking my tumblr and deviantArt pages first (which are in my signature). Feedback (complimentary, critical, but most of all constructive) is much appreciated. Thanks for checking out my topic, and have a nice day, and if you can please leave some critique!

Spoiler

Um, I thought it was about high time I made such a topic showcasing my stuff.

I from rare time to rare time work on Flash sprite animations (mostly battles), and maybe some humorous videos. I also did some Pivot animations years back, but I no longer use Pivot. Also make some images with Paint.NET (my Sonic 4 Dimps image I currently have in my signature is an example). I started using Flash, it was about over a year ago, with my first sprite battle almost a year before.

This is a brief preview on my current WIP, a second part of a sprite battle between Sonic and Shadow.

*video removed*

To anyone interested, this is my first sprite battle (the first part of the Sonic and Shadow sprite battle) for comparison.

*video removed*

Enjoy, compliments and constructive criticism on my Flash animation aren't necessary but are welcome.[\spoiler]

............ok. You could had just replied in the comments that it sucks, but whatever.

As I said, the first video is still a WIP. I might release another preview in the next few months, that is if I have found some time to work on it.

It's better than anything I could do, at least.

Exactly, I could never do anything as cool as that, the flash animation itself is awesome, I don't dig the whole "Sonic characters fighting at super speeds ala Dragonball Z" as it's been done to death.

Brief update: I just need to find some time (perferrably this weekend) to finish with the scrolling BG for one scene, and then I can upload a second preview, which is a wee bit longer but has better animation than the first preview.

UPDATE:

Unsurprisingly, it's been 10 days and I still haven't posted a preview. After getting annoyed with the problems I ran into with the animation itself (some motion-tweened stuff would be too much for the animation to handle, so even at 5 fps it would be laggy as hell) as well as problems with exporting it (always something with the audio, either sound effects would be missing and/or the sound effects at one point would go off-sync. which screws up the entire sync with the video because I usually have the main music playing in the background and I'd have to try again, ugh), I at first decided to end the animation early. I was nearly done with the severely shortened Part 2 when the program froze and quit on me, rendering a good chunk of work I did on many multiple projects for a good few hours that day (one project was the animation itself, and the other four projects were libraries of images/sound clips/sprites/symbols of specific things -i.e. Sonic Library-had sprites and voice clips of Sonic, of course- I made some significant updates on) lost. Rage that I kept to myself ensued.

After I got over my lost work and felt OK with using Flash again, I decided to go back to Flash and went back to doing what I've been doing with the animation for the past several months-revising it (yay -_-), and decided to finish it properly instead of prematurely. Now that school's out, I may have some more time to work on it and get a chunk of it done. Hooray.

I do have something to show as of the moment-my other full sprite battle that was a second part of another one-Sonic and Shadow vs. Mecha Sonic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuTKC4Z0G-s

Not too fond of this one, I actually perfer my older animation Sonic vs Shadow (Part 1, you can see it in the original post of this thread) over this sprite battle. The first part, due to sprite/program limitations (it was made in Pivot 3.1 Beta) lacked a background, so I didn't add a background for consistency with it. I also didn't think the actual action in this one is as good as in Sonic vs. Shadow, and I didn't really like how the "plot" (term used very loosely) ended here. Now I'm kinda stuck on what to do next with the plot in the third part-that is, IF I do get around to doing it, but as of the moment my attention's on Sonic vs. Shadow Part 2. I'm thinking about remaking both parts of the aforementioned (I've been using that word quite a lot recently tongue.png) Sonic and Shadow vs. Mecha Sonic sprite animation/battle.

UPDATE:

Long story short, I reverted back to my original plan of finishing Sonic vs Shadow Part 2 early, rather than releasing a second preview and continue working on it. Despite working on the video for months, the improvement gap in my animation skills I arguably believe has been ironically longer than the actual animation. Again, if you read my previous posts, I ran into quite a number of problems with the program. I'm hoping to start work on another one shortly afterwards, and I'm hoping that it will be much longer than my previous animations (I'm hoping to reach the 3-5min mark next time), but hopefully I won't run into many problems like I did with this animation. So in the end, I really wouldn't call it a sprite battle, moreso a glance at my recent animation skills. Although I will admit, after I got rid of a certain scene in the animation, Flash was quite kind to me afterwards.

So I finally finished the animation today, and then I quickly did some small enhancements to my regular "Super Sonic" ident (you can see it at the beginning of my animations, and the enhanced one will premiere at the beginning of Sonic vs Shadow: Part 2). As I'm typing this, I'm currently uploading Sonic vs Shadow Part 2 to YouTube. When it is available for viewing (it should be in the next 10 minutes), I'll post it here.

And here it is: Sonic vs. Shadow Part 2. Available in HD (up to 1080p full HD) and 3D via YouTube's 2D to 3D converter (the latter will be available in a little bit).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-e9We9nagA

Again, since I ended it prematurely, it's quite short. Also, some frames were dropped in the conversion process-which caused some frames to go missing (I'll note these in the upcoming video annontations). Otherwise, it's nothing too bad.

So a few weeks ago I decided to make a deviantArt account (link is in my signature), which is designated to be a dumping ground of some selected images I made in Paint.NET (I'm planning to have the old Imageshack account I originally uploaded these images from be designated accounts for specific images, namely logos and images I use for profile pictures and signatures). These are some Sonic 4 Dimps images I used in my signature for a while.

Compliments and constructive criticism aren't necessary but are much appreciated.

EDIT: I'm also thinking about uploading some scans of some drawings I have...at least I'd actually be putting my dA account to proper use.

And now for something different.

Every now and then I drew this in my spare time. It's a sort of "in-game sidescroller level" picture that has some cues of the Sonic games (namely detailed background scenery, some geometrical shapes) as well as other things.

A cleaner variant of my drawing that I posted on Monday. Not much was done, just used the ink sketch feature with some adjusted settings in Paint.NET and cropped the image.

I drew another sidescroller screenshot! An armada is coming in towards the aerial kingdom under the perfect disguise of clouds, ready to attack...

This one draws it's (arguably numerous) cues from aerial levels Sonic games, but mostly Sky Sanctuary from Sonic and Knuckles. A bit less details on foreground/background scenery, I focused more on the shading of the clouds and the planes/choppers/fighter jets, and added a few sunbeams that shine through the clouds. I think it gives a rather nice "wide-angle lens" look for the drawing that I was originally going for. I also think that if colored, it could look very nice.

On another note, because my laptop battery died and I haven't been able to access my laptop since, I don't think I'll be able to work on any Flash animations for a while. :/

A third “level sidescroller” drawing slightly edited in Paint.NET, which I think is to be my nicest one yet. The setting is partially based on the animated 1995 television produced The Wind in the Willows film, as it is located on a river with the character (whom I’m now calling Marlowe) is riding a boat, like Ratty in the film; and there is a tree that has some drooping branches of plants (it is not a willow tree, though). This picture has lots of detail in regards to the scenery. Lots of shading used here, although there are some “illuminated” areas for where the fireflies are. Despite the lack of a sun and visible sunlight, I was going for a sunset/dusk background, which explains the shadows of the scenery even though the sky is on an evening setting.

Another level sidescroller drawing....this time in a casino! Different from my previous drawings, as it takes place in a more urban location. Has a different character too.

level_sidecroller_4_by_yeow95-d68qzn6.jp

It has a lot of tropes and images you can associate with a casino! Flashing lights, neon signs, insignias from playing cards, chips, and slot machines; water geysers, which obstruct the background city buildings dotted with lights, and a actual slot machine activated by those springs sitting down there, hovering over the poor lad trying to get through this mess of a level. Sadly I forgot to darken the night sky, though. Based on quick image searches for Casino on Google. Also has a bit of Sonic 2's Casino Night influence upon it (take a glance at the tree and the Casino night signature).

So earlier this week my father bought for me a Wacom Bamboo Capture tablet as a high school graduation gift, and I've recently been getting acquainted with it. One of my first tasks I've been doing with it has been coloring in my pre-existing level sidescroller series of drawings.

level_sidescroller_1___color_variant__wi

This is a preview of what I've currently done so far with my first, I've spent a chunk of the hours I was awake today coloring in the background mountains and the forest covering one of the mountains, a portion of the sky and some of the clouds, two flowers (the large flower and a much smaller flower to it's left), a section of the grass that can be seen in the background behind Marlowe (to clarify, that's the little guy with the cape standing next to the large flower), and Marlowe's cape and gloves. I also erased many of the black dots that surrounded the areas I was and wasn't coloring (a side effect of the ink sketch methods I use in Paint.NET to clean up the original drawing), and a chunk lines that were remnants of the lined paper of the original drawing.

It's finished. Here's the color variant of Level Sidescroller 1 in all of it's glory.

level_sidescroller_1__color_variant__by_

I hope to work on Sidescroller 2 next, but I'll instead be using a different coloring methods next time. I might use the original scan as well instead of the ink sketch version I create with Paint.NET, because it creates a lot of tiny black dots that appear almost everywhere. At least they add some fitting detail to the plants, which is why I didn't erase them on those sections.

A drawing that I plan to ink and color sometime later for use as a banner submission for this forum that I drew earlier this evening. One of the first things I've drawn on printer paper, so none of those obnoxious lines that you see on my drawings on lined paper. Slightly slanted because the scan and the banner outline came off a bit crooked.sonic_in_the_sonic_stadium_zone__ssmb_ba

I know about a month ago I decided to take on drawing some member's avatars just for fun. I'll admit that I had put it off for a while, as I'd been doing other stuff (learning some coding, watching films, coloring the SSMB banner I'm working on, etc.). I also at first decided to draw them on paper, but then I switched that out for doing it on Photoshop Elements. I'd like to note that this doesn't mean I've stopped with it, and as proof I spent most of my night drawing and coloring this (this one's for you, Can of Nothing!).

A preview of the digitally inked/colored variant of my banner submission. A first attempt at a drawing I'm digitally inking/drawing in (PSE 10). Lot of white spots within the lines, something I'll have to get rid of in the final version.

Second and final preview of the digitally inked/colored variant of my banner submission. The banner is 95% complete, with the coloring about finished. There are still many traces of little white bits within the lines produced from the original drawing lines I still have to get rid of/trace over as well as small gray/white bits around the lines that need to be colored in. The bottom left of the image (the grass/brick below) is some of the image traced over, so you can get a idea of how the finished image may look like.
