Unpopular Sonic opinions!

Recommended Posts

I feel the worst parts of the Sonic Fanbase are currently holding Sonic from being at his best. Their absolute obsession with keeping Sonic as a shallow, brainless, and soulless platformer in an attempt to vainly regain his glory days ironically keeps Sonic in an eternal cycle of mediocrity and potentially obscurity.

Granted the newer games aren't bad, but they don't have that "WOW" factor that games prior to Colors had, whether it be in atmosphere (Unleashed), Story (SatBK, SA2?), or a sense of continuity (SA1; whether you like this game or not, you have to admit, at least it follows the continuity set by Sonic 3 & Knuckles pretty well.)

I understand this, as i also hate the vocal minority, but the issue is getting past the minority so that Sonic Team can hear us?

I personally thought the atmosphere and artstyle in Generations and Colors is great and it certainly gave me that "WOW" factor.

If there was ever an "open world"-type Sonic game, I could see parkour fitting in really nicely. Plus the boost would be handy depending on just how big those worlds are.

Speaking of which, I don't hate or even slightly dislike the boost. I understand why some don't like it, but I just don't feel the same. I still find it fun, but hey, that's just me. I do hope that if it sticks around, it isn't quite as easy to keep the boost gauge filled. Just look at Generations, there's four different ways to keep the boost gauge up:

  • Rings, which IMO fill the gauge too quickly (each individual ring gives too much energy, that is...probably to make the G.U.N truck chase easy for casuals :P)
  • destroying enemies
  • doing tricks off of rainbow rings and certain ramps
  • smashing any breakable object(!)

But yeah, I'm of the opinion the boost isn't destroying the franchise or anything like that. Although, I wouldn't mind it being nerfed or even going away entirely as long as the games keep being fun. I'm probably way too easy to please. :U

I dont see the problem here, despite Cream being based on Tails, she really doesn't look anything Tails, at least to me. I think its all in the name of consistency with the design so the series is focused on the way it looks, you can have a few wildcards like Big, but in the end you need to have focus.

Yeah, but I think it comes at the expense of making the characters look distinct. Cream may not look a lot like Tails, but he was very obviously used as a base for her design, in addition to Marine basically being a modified Cream(which becomes more obvious when you look at a custom sprite for Marine, which is essentially an edited Cream sprite), I'd just like a lot more variation is all. All the characters just feel too samey for my taste.

Different Strokes for Different Folks, Mon.

Generations was fun and I am glad to finally have a Sonic Game for the PC, but the worlds felt too...disjointed for me. Unleashed was more my cup of tea.

I see unpopular opinions stating that Sonix X, AoStH and SatAM are all the best cartoon.

What, is it a popular opinion that Sonic Underground was the best?!

Seriously though, there are a few contradictions here, so I'm unsure as to what is generally considered popular opinion or not now. So, some random opinions:

It may be due to the PAL conversion, but Sonic 1 feels really slow. Never liked Marble Zone either.

The Sonic 2 Final Boss is nowhere near as difficult as some make it out to be (unless you're playing as Knuckles with his weak jump).

A Save system was needed for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but in Sonic 3 alone it took away all challenge.

Sonic CD isn't that great.

Sonic Adventure was the best 3D game until Generations came along. The plot has the perfect tone for a Sonic story, too.

Uber-Serious Sonic stories are silly. If they'd been dark from the start, sure, but you can't go from bright colours and Twinkle Park to soldiers killing terminally ill girls one game to the next.

Sonic Adventure 2 in general gets a lot of praise I don't get. And the Generations remixes of City Escape are far better than the original.

Ryan Drummond had one good game vocally - Sonic Heroes.

Shadow wasn't an abomination, but it wasn't that good and generally a bad idea. Less realistic guns would have helped, as would a proper aiming system.

Sonic Rush Adventure is pretty boring. Did like Marine though.

The worst part of Colours was the Sonic Simulator.

I don't get the hate for Hill Top Zone. Oil Ocean was way worse.

As crowded as the series is at the moment I think they should bring back fang the sniper. He looks like he could be an awesome character if handled correctly.

I think they should Retcon silver being from the future and change it up so that he lives in Blazes demension instead. At least it won't cause so much confusion and plus it will be easier to work him into a storyline.

I think Metal Sonic should talk again.

I would also like to see Chaos 0 some more. Come on admit it, you know it would be fun to play as him.

I think Chronicles needs a sequel.

I also think Chronicles did an excellent job with the characters, except (ironically enough) sonic.

I find myself agreeing with every single one of your points there. You should like be the new boss of Sega or something.

Different Strokes for Different Folks, Mon.

Generations was fun and I am glad to finally have a Sonic Game for the PC, but the worlds felt too...disjointed for me. Unleashed was more my cup of tea.

...but in Unleashed, the worlds were LITERALLY disjointed.

Anyway, I thought of a few more unpopular (to my knowledge) opinions.

- I like Mephiles. I think he's the most enjoyable "demon-monster" character besides Chaos. Yes, the plot was awful and he didn't make it any less confusing, but I liked how he tried to get into Shadow's head. Plus he was voiced pretty well by Dan Green. Overall I thought he was a fairly bright spot in an otherwise horrid story.

- I don't think Big is a terrible character. Fishing gameplay sucks, it was a stupid idea, and it should never have been implented into Sonic. But does that make Big a bad character? He's a big, lazy, unintelligent teddy bear when ya get right down to it. What's wrong with that? As long as they don't bring him back too much or force unwanted gameplay upon us, I don't really have a problem with Big. In Heroes he was a power character for Team Rose, and in that game I had no problems with him whatsoever. I guess some people could find him annoying just by his voice and personality, but I personally don't.

- Starlight Carnival is BORING. It is easily the worst area in Colors Wii. The music is a bit annoying, the 2D sections are tedious, and the 3D sections take automation to a whole new level.

-^Speaking of annoying music, Reach For the Stars is horrid.

- For some reason, I really enjoy the 3rd and 6th bosses in Colors Wii.

- Roger Craig Smith at his worst is still better than Jason Griffith at his best.

- I think they should make Amy playable more often. She was too slow in SA1, but besides that her hammer has potential for some interesting gameplay mechanics. This was handled great in Sonic Advance 1. She was about the same speed as the others, but she couldn't spindash, and she couldn't curl into a ball to protect herself when jumping. Therefore, she relied on her hammer. This was drastically different from playing as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, but it added some nice variety and I'd like to see something like this tried in another game. Optionally, of course.

- Sonic CD has the most fun Special Stages.

- I would much rather have a great 3D Sonic game than a great 2D Sonic game. To be honest, this isn't limited to Sonic at the moment. I'm thrilled that 2D platformers have gotten a nice revival in the past few years, but it seems like 3D platformers are few and far between these days. If done right, I think 3D platformers can be much more exciting and immersive than 2D platformers. There were moments in Generations where I think I was having almost as much fun as the classics - and I don't mean with Classic Sonic, I mean Modern Sonic. Tighten up the controls and add even more free movement in the level design, and that would be my ideal next Sonic game. Plus they obviously aren't going to get the 2D Genesis physics right, so they might as well stop trying.

I hated SATAM.

The Archie comics got better when Ken Penders left.

I like most Sonic games except 06, Secret Rings and, Chronicles.

I think the pre 4kids actors were terrible.

I like Big The Cat.

The new cast is the best voice cast we've ever had.

I prefer the new games over the classics.

I'm half-way in Dio's camp. I do believe that the games are good enough to say that Sonic is back, (I love colors and LOVE Generations to death), but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Less speed-based controls and mechanics, more level gimmicks, the implementation of rolling physics in 3d, etc etc we've been over this before.

I'm sure I have a lot of unpopular Sonic opinions, so I'll just give my music-related ones for now:

*As much as I love "Escape from the City", I actually much prefer the

from the trial version of SA2.

*I think Sonic Advance 3 has some of the best music in the entire series.

*(You guys are going to hate this one) I think the soundtrack for Sonic Rush Adventure is way better than the soundtrack for Sonic Rush.

*As horrible of a game as Sonic Blast is, I really like a lot of its soundtrack.

*I absolutely love the Crush 40 version of Sonic Boom (which a lot of people seem to hate), and have been listening to it more than the originial lately.

Maybe I'll post more later if I can think of other things...

EA bought them out during Chronicles' production, so that might be related to it.

Also I heard that a the people working on Chronicle's was a new handheld team that had nothing to do with the people who had worked on Bioware's previous, well received games.

The Archie comics got better when Ken Penders left.

This is unpopular? I don't read the comics, but I thought most people thought it got better once he left and Flynn came on.

Sonic Advance 2 is the best Advance title.

The Treasure stages in SA2 were far better than the ones in SA1. Yeah they were longer. But you can beat the SA1 stages in 30 seconds if you're good. You have to learn to patrol all the main areas in the SA2 stage. Great use of the moveset actually.

I'm sure this one is pretty unpopular.

Sonic doesn't inherently need Classic gameplay, or rolling physics and such to have brilliant games again.

While it's true that the Modern Era did indeed try, Unleashed as many people have said before was the last one where I felt the heart and soul put into a Sonic game.

Most think that Sonic needs to go back to rolling and such to peak the gaming experience. And while it could work, I don't think Sonic has to do it.

Sonic has a lot of things to work with in a series where you have platforming elements mixed with speed. Expanding the classic gameplay is just one of those things.

Even other members here have given us possible ways to make great 3D Sonic games. Such as adding parkour elements, or modifying the boost to be more of a power-up instead of a solidified gameplay element.

Classic in 3D might be one good option, but it's not like Sonic has others that can work.

Hmm. I dislike every incarnation of Twinkle Park and Casinopolis in SA1. For TP, I think it's the final part that I always hate, which causes to make me dislike the level...somehow. For Casinopolis, for Sonic, I think that it's probably the worst speed stage in SA1, and the most boring. Sure, pinball's fun and all, but I'd rather like that to be a minigame of some sort. Knuckles's take on it didn't help that much either.

I don't get what's the problem with the camera in SA2. Every time I've played it, minus Mad Space, there's been one spot (Last room, Crazy Gadget), where the camera flips out at me, I think it's fine everywhere else. That said, I don't get the problem with 06 or Unleashed's camera either. I think the only Sonic game in which I openly hated the camera was SA1, and that's all because of Sky Deck and Lost World.

I'm indifferent to the boost, I really don't care if it never shows up ever again, but at the same time I won't really care if it shows up in the next game.

I think Sonic Advance 3 is the best game out of the trilogy.

The first Sonic Riders title is still one of the best racers I've ever played. I just wished it had more levels :-/

I hate Sonic 1, one of my least favorite games in the franchise.

I actually enjoyed playing through Shadow the Hedgehog

And I didn't mind Elise in Sonic 06, i dont understand the hate towards her. when I first saw her kissed Sonic I actually thought nothing of it lol.

I kinda agree with most of these. Well, except for the last one, but mostly because I haven't listened to the Crush 40 version that much.

Let the Unpopular Opinions Commence!

- Cream the Rabbit is the absolute worst Sonic character ever created. She contributes absolutely nothing to the games, has a terrible voice (Even her Generations performance is cringe-worthy.) and has no interesting character traits whatsoever, besides the fact that she's "Polite". It remains a mystery to me as to why Sega hasn't retired her yet, even Big the Cat has a larger fanbase than her. Honestly, why not bring back someone interesting like Marine the Racoon?

- The Fleetway Sonic Comics are abysmal in ever way, from art to writing. Not saying that Archie is perfect either, but atleast they have become somewhat decent since Ian Flynn took over.

- Sonic Colors isn't funny, at all. I laughed more while playing Sonic '06, for the wrong reasons of course, but still. Hire the writers from something along the lines of Futurama and I might be impressed.

- Roger Craig Smith is the best Sonic voice actor to date. Drummond had the voice, but was a terrible actor. Griffith was fairly good at acting (In his later performances.) but didn't have the voice. And I can't listen to Jaleel White without thinking that Sonic is somehow Steve Urkel's Spirit-Animal. Roger is the best of both worlds, and he'll only improve as time goes on.

- All of the Olympic Crossover games are bad, period.
