Unpopular Sonic opinions!

Sally's a great character and she is not a Mary-Sue.

perfectprincess-2.png

...sounds like the very definition of one to me. This funny, funny blog entry is author character shilling to the nth degree. And I'm not even getting into her portrayal in the comics yet.

She's a great character I quite agree. And the sheer level of hatred she gets from SonAmy fanbrats in particular is so undeserved. But Mary Sue? In the Archie Comics, she's one through and through.

Why people mix character relationships of other narrative continuities???

it does not make ANY sense...

I think that people need to stop fucking over analyzing that one blog Ian wrote over a year ago.

And I think Ian ought to stop shilling Sally as perfect when quite a lot of issues before have made this out not to be so and because being perfect is not an obtainable or remotely believable trait of a character.

Sally is an interesting and endearing character in her own right. We don't need her traits being exalted unrealistically to put that across.

Again I think that blog about Sally being perfect was a poor choice of words on Ian's part. I really don't think that he was trying to say that she was perfect.

To be fair, she has been shown under Ian's writing to second guess herself plenty of times, especially after an event happens where the good guys are on the losing side currently. (ex Iron Dominion arc) It is something that I wish would be explored further.... but... well... she might rust in her current state, and she isn't exactly capable of free will anyway.

BUT if she ever does get changed back..... Y'know, there is a great opportunity to show a more vulnerable side to her. Because I also think she needs more character flaws to round her out more and not give her that "Mary Sue" label

There's basically no way to read it otherwise. I mean, there isn't even a token flaw, it's praise from start to finish.

Now hold on, there's no context here! While it didn't exactly have 'major' points, the next blog post after that was all about her perceived flaws. I'd link to it, but the blogs have basically died.

Edit: Wayback Machine helps somewhat. It's on this page, scroll down until you see "Sally's Shortcomings".

Let's take a look...

If Sally has one flaw, it's that she overtaxes herself.

Stay classy, Archie.

-(not sure if un-popular) I wish there was an easter egg in Sonic Colors with the Space Colony Ark (like we see it floating in space somewhere 'near' the park.

-I've tried and tried and tried again, but I cannot bring myself to really like Sonic Unleashed (I only have the Xbox 360 version). I have fun for a couple of minutes (15 minutes I think is my record), then something happens ruining my fun. I really hate to admit this, but I hate Sonic 06 a LOT more than even Eggmanland (the farthest point I've ever gotten in Unleashed, and the part of the game I hate most) but Sonic Unleashed is the only video game that I've ever literally snapped the disc in two out of anger... (those are the only main Sonic games I've never beaten the main story to). It really makes me sad because I think it is the most beautiful Sonic game ever made outside of S3&K and I think to myself everytime I watch a video of it: "wow! that looks like fun!!", but then I play it and I feel like hell playing it, and no it isn't that it is difficult, I just can't have fun with it...

-I hate the Unleashed Tornado levels way more than the SA1 counterparts.

...which is entirely our prerogative. Archie Authors exalt Sally without rhyme or reason, making blogs about her "Shortcomings" which aren't so much shortcomings as they are clearly intended to be sympathetic ones which, as shown in the actual comic itself, are never really brought-up and criticised and her fans object to this unrealistic portrayal because not only does it make rabid Sally haters have more reason to despise her, it stamps all over her realism and is horrible Suefication.

Which is a peve of mine.

Seriously, what is with it regarding the comics authors and their apparent penchant for painting Sally as this perfect or borderline-perfect individual? What is with her fans overreacting when you even vaguely criticise her? It's extremely irritating. I like Sally. She was endearing because she was arguably the most realistic character regarding emotion and is resourceful and intelligent. I hate the way she's been handled in the comics particularly after issue 134. And I hate how the Sally-haters get fuel time and time again to rip on her when it's the fault of the writing.

Here's my opinion:

All Sonic games can be enjoyed to some extent.

You heard me.

All of them.

I hate Big's characterization in Chronicles. He's supposed to be a tad simple-minded, but sensible enough to actually recognize the situations he's in. In Chronicles, he was a complete idiot and, as far as I'm concerned, that's plain-as-day character derailment.

<p>Sonic games should always have a bit of dark and edgy.

Not like ShTH spawing the word DAMN and with guns and motorcicles.

but rather darker, emotional themes, like death, the lost of a friend, people being injured, Sonic Unleashed managed to have all of that without turning the game into a emo shitfest.

Also Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic ATSR.

Sonic should always have a darker undertone in the games, even for the player to actually care about what's happening with the characters.

Just take a look at Kung Fu Panda 2 on how they managed to make the sequel darker and more emotional, but without losing the silliness and the lightheartedness of the series.

I believe, THAT was the failure of the plots of Sonic Colors and Generations.

Heck, even something among the lines of "Sonic, if you don't fix time, all the friends you made thought the years will disappear!" would work

The theme to Sega Superstars Tennis was very generic and forgettable to me.

I think it is widely acknowledged that the genesis games have aged well in the last 20 plus years. Strange as this might sound but I don't think that Sonic 2 has aged as well as the others in the last few years and in my opinion deserves (and is in need) more than ever of a HD Widescreen enhanced remake.

The reason why I say this about Sonic 2 is because of the recent games, Sonic 4 Ep1, Generations, Sonic CD 2011 and Sonic 4 Ep2. These games have really borrowed a lot of elements from Sonic 2. Both Sonic 4 episodes have shamelessly ripped/copied a lot of the levels and elements from Sonic 2. One could say that is a massive compliment to Sonic 2, but it has kind of left Sonic 2 feeling rather old and outdated. Then Generations gave us Casino Night and Chemical Plant. As for Sonic CD? well the Sonic 2 Tails sprite being playable in CD (which was an awseome addition). The fact that you can fly as Tails in CD but you can't fly as Tails in Sonic 2 as it's only AI controlled really fucking annoys me. I have had the occasion wher I think, lets play Sonic 2 as Tails, only to realise he can't fly so I play CD instead where he can. Much more fun.

It just feels to me that Sonic 2 has been over used in the last two years of so. If there is an Ep3 then no references from Sonic 2 please!!!

So whats the solution? How about a:

  • HD & Widescreen re-release, Taxman obviously
  • The ability to fly as Tails.
  • Unlockable Knuckles (like S&K and Sonic 2 lock on).
  • The ability to active Super Sonic by pressing jump twice like in Sonic 3.
  • Allow us to 'debug mode' our way through the levels that never made it like Wood Zone, Hidden Palace Zone, Genocide City Zone or Dust Hill Zone. Or how about SEGA finishing the design of those levels so that they are fully playable?

I just feel that Sonic 2 desparately needs to a bit of love and for it's levels to be left in peace.

-I'm a fan of Sonic's since Sonic 1, so I've been with the franchise since Day 1...

That said, Sonic 06's level tropes and stage atmospherics are my favorite in the series. Crisis City, Kingdom Valley, Aquatic Base and Radical Train are seriously awesome stage concepts. It's such a shame the game is so terrible. I was thrilled that one of the stages got a Generations revival.

-I find Sonic CD to be the worst Classic era Sonic title. It's good...but I just don't get it.

-I think Silver is a character that has potential, but...well, terrible debut game.

-I enjoy Shadow's game more than Heroes.

I loved Scott Drier's Knuckles voice. His voice was smug but soft at times, and I felt it worked more than Dan Green, who sounded pissed off 24/7, or Travis Willingham who sounds like a Funky Kong-esque generic surfer dude. In SA2 when Knuckles tells Eggman to stop the ARK's interesting change of course, he really sounds like he's going to rip the Eggman's head off! I like Knuckles as a Han Solo type who's smug and relaxed, but when he's angry shits going down.

SA2 over Colours any day. Just sayin'.
