Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit

So it took me to read a review and watch some gameplay preview before my mind actually added up what you do in this game. Castleroid platformer shoot 'em up with customization, a rad soundtrack, unique animations for boss kills that will only be seen once per the 100 boss characters, and Wario micro minigames-like finishers...

Sega put so much heart into this thing! Also LOL did Ash actually kill a Plants vs Zombies flower at the end of that trailer? Stay classy, guys. But would it kill them to advertise the game a little bit? That they put so much into something is admirable, but how will people remember them if they don't spread the word? I completely forgot about this game and Rhythm Thief launching and it took browsing this forum to renew my interest and make me remember. An update to their blog in the least about now would be stellar, guys.

This game is really fucking fun. I have been playing it a lot more than I ever expected to. Gameplay wise, it feels and plays a lot like.. Cave Story. Believe it or not.

The whole game is a series of interconnected caverns broken up by gates that require you to seek out and kill a certain amount of monsters. Your wheel functions both as a jetpack and a drill to dig your way through tougher ground in order to find treasure, secret items and new pathways. The loot you acquire allows you to buy new weapons (which you can later upgrade with more cash), health upgrades as well as items to customize Ash with.

There are 10 worlds total, 13 different weapons, 9 different wheels to unlock and a total of 53 different "masks" for Ash to wear. Some wheels and masks can be bought in the shop, but others require you to complete missions (which are normally completely optional) and find them hidden throughout the maps.

The music is surprisingly good and I like that the game doesn't take itself seriously at all. It also has a few Sega references in it.

My main gripes with it are the loading times (which the developers make fun of themselves) and the fact that the mini-games used during the finishers sometimes become annoying or redundant as not every monster has a unique finisher tied to it.

If you're looking for something fun to play for a good few hours I would recommend it. I bought it mostly on a whim and I think it was well worth $15.

I've been playing this game (a little since it's been a busy week) but damn it this is a good game. As soon as the old school Sega chant came up I knew I was in for a ride. From the gameplay to the over the top dialogue and references to Sega franchises this game has it all.

If you haven't bought it do it right meow! Also if you can't bother Sega on Facebook or Twitter and tell them to promote this game more cause it truly deserves it.

I just bought it on Saturday and I am not disappointed at all! The game made me laugh pretty hard at some boss finishers, though not so much the dialogue. The dialogue just seemed smile-worthy cheesy to me but not necessarily a bad cheesy. Also, as I expected, the violence is over the top cartoony gory blood splatter everywhere! Even skeletons can bleed in hell apparently. No one is safe!

Some people say that the game is decently long, having 100 bosses to kill and all, but I was able to beat the game a day later. That may have been me really getting into collecting the hidden presents though. Really fun customization items and also some really strange ones (a butt face? Really? xb ). You get these either from buying in the shop, finding in a present hidden in the level, completeing missions or receiving it from your defeated monsters working on the Island (which will get you an achievement). Speaking of missions, those objectives are pretty crazy random. Some of them involve you killing yourself as fast as possible in a time limit or beating a ghost to the end. Difficulty varied between levels, but they're really not so bad. They mostly reiterate what you had to do to get to certain areas of the stage to kill a boss monster, so if anything, you should be expecting it.

I think perhaps the only problem I have with the game is no option to go to the Island ingame. You HAVE to exit out to the main menu and access it there. No ifs ands or buts. Just a small nitpick however. You don't really get anything important to beating the game from that anyway. It also took some time for me to get used to shooting things. At first I'd accidently saw at nothing then get hit by a wandering enemy, but eventually I got used to it a little I guess. Enough to beat everything anyway.

I highly recommend this game to anyone with a love for shoot 'em up platformers! It's pretty short but where it lacks in length, it makes up for in classic Sega arcade goodness. It also has a pretty snazzy soundtrack. I had a nice lol when I got to the Super Happy land though. It didn't help that I got stumped by one of the puzzles either, so listening to that song was almost nervewrecking haha! Said song is the Bunny Song (which also functions as a credits theme):

In case some people have questions with the more ambiguous achievements, I have some answers listed in the spoiler.

Quick Rabbit! - just find a way to die really quickly. I got this one accidently, but I can totally see it being doable in the level with the magnets. Make sure you die within 5ish seconds after you respawn and it's yours.

Groundhog day lover - Die from something. A lot. Some people think it's somewhere in the 100 range, but it's really not bad because you'll probably rack up a lot of deaths during the normal playthrough. Just make sure you die from the same thing over and over (like spikes) if you're the grinding achievement hunter type.

Jackpot - Win the jackpot. I got this one in the psychodelic stage. You can't see the values on the slots (like cherry, coin, etc.) since they just appear as "?" and "LOL" but the chances of winning are much higher here than playing the slots in the Casino level.

All of the others are self explanatory.

I was playing the demo last night. I actually...liked it. It was crazy and unique. I'll probably download the full game if I have enough points left over from SA2 and NiGHTS.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been playing this game for most of the day.

Have to say that I really do find it quite enjoyable. If not a bit boring at times, theres just a lot of times where I'm on the screen and nothing much is happening other than me jumping around trying to figure out where to go... that makes it sound more boring than it is, I do like the game, it's fun and the humor is great, though the killing of the big monsters is starting to get a tad dull though.

Also, has anyone else encountered any cases of the game randomly freezing on them?

I played for an hour or so after getting it on PS+ and while I haven't had it crash, it does seem prone to slight chugging at times.

Awww man, I'm on vacation and away from the PS3 for a few weeks... might end up missing this one =(

Edit US PSN+ users get 20% off!

20% off is a crappy deal compared to being free. D=
