Just had a random though, how about running through a wide crop fields? Something like this...

Another thought I had would be a race course Sonic would have to take a detour.

I would like to see the return of a music themed level. As much as I give Advance 2 tons of crap, I did like Music Plant.

I'd like more stages similar to Starlight Carnival.

Making the vastness of outer space a spectacle of wonder while you're travelling through it on high speeds, making your eyes bleed with the immenseness and color.

They couldn't do much with the Wii's limitations, but imagine what they could do with that in the future.

I was about to say exactly this.

More ideas - an underwater level involving sinking ships or flooding submarines. You'd have to move quickly to avoid the rising water.

Swamps/marshes. They could even be strewn with litter such as tires and old appliances to provide some unique platforming. Sorta like the swamp levels in Donkey Kong Country 2.

I always liked the concept of Bridge Zone for some reason.

Donkey Kong Country 2 levels would work beautifully for Sonic. Like The Canyon level or that bramble bush in the sky or a deep jungle level.

Food levels. Outside of Sonic Advance 2 (I think) and Sonic Colours, I don't think they've done very many of those, which is a shame. They're generally pretty insane designs, which make them some of the best looking.

I want to see some sort of Eggman submarine fleet level. It would be really to go from inside a sub to underwater on the seabed, and back again.

What about a sky based level like World 5 in SMB3? Sky Sanctuary and Advance Angel Island are the only examples I can think of.

I'd like to see one of those digital tropes in a Sonic game, kinda like ShTH, but not as crappy.

Techno Base and Cyber Track from Advance 2 and 3 were exceedingly cool, but Mad Matrix and Digital Circuit managed to flop aesthetically. It would be cool to see a return of the trope.

We need more lava based levels and a level where you have to escape from a volcano before it erupts. As time goes on the level gets more dangerous.

An 'underwater city' type level would be nice to see.

So basically Hydrocity Zone/Generations Seaside Hill? There some examples if you look hard enough. Still ike water levels though.

I love the Idea of Fire and Ice, like Beyond the Black Stump from Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. What I would give to see a Fire/Ice level in a Sonic Game.

Probably more like my earlier post in this thread about combining the whole city/highway thing with a water level. I'd totally love to see that because highway levels and water levels are some of my favourite common Sonic tropes.

Oh man, nostalgia-gasm. I loved that one...

*ahem* Anyways, apologies for the bump, but this is just my kind of thread. The great thing about Sonic's world is that - given the right tone and touches - any setting can work. In any case, I do have a few wishes of my own...

-Sewer. Aside from Toxic Caves and that one part of Casinopolis, I don't recall that many zones involving sewers. Sonic could run through giant metal pipes, avoiding and playing tricks with the currents. The music could have drip-drops and metallic echoes.

-Autumn. Use giant leaves for transport to get around, from green and orange to red and occasionally even pink, all doing things that would either help or hinder you (green leaves act like springs, red leaves give way, etc). There could also be a wind effecting your progress, ala Web Woods in DKC2. I'd imagine the music to be serene and calming, which I believe can work even in something as fast-paced as Sonic. Perhaps there could be a Badnik disguised as a pile of leaves?

-Wild West. Frontier Canyon and Rocky Ridge came close, but not close enough. A big sunset with the sun itself in the center under a dark red-purple sky, a few patches of quicksand, big sandy cliffs with stereotypical tumbleweed and teepees and everything else to settle the mood. Cacti and handgun-themed Badniks. (Fullboar strikes again?) A cowboy-motif Robotnik in some sort of stereotypical steampunk weapon.

-Dr. Eggman's Chocolate Factory. Sweet Mountain may have been recent, but let's try a different approach. Like the Death Egg was to the Death Star, this is a homage to the classic tale of Willy Wonka. And since the original factory was already unsettling, lord knows what Eggman's one would look like. Blueberry Pawns everywhere, the return of Metallic Madness' shrinking ray, Badniks disguising themselves as the scenery in the candy forest... the boss would be a speedy take on the infamous boat ride, complete with equally bizarre imagery to mess with you in the background.

-The Moon. Sonic has been on the moon before, but only for a Super Sonic fight in the first Advance. Let's have a real zone on the great big not-cheese. As you'd expect, it'd be lonely but massive, with dark craters and abandoned moon buggies all around, which the latter could provide itself as a level gimmick. There would be constellations in the starry heavens, possibly modeled after the faces of various Sonic characters old or new, and maybe even other SEGA characters like Ristar. The music would sound... lost, if that makes sense. The final part - and the boss - could take place in a certain particularly gigantic, molten-spewing crater, just to fuck with the SA2 conspiracies again.

-Trains. We have had a few trains admittedly, but usually they're fairly standard (Sunset Park) or fairly shite (Radical Train). This one would be more akin to a locomotive nightmare, combining the artillery and theatrics of the Fawful Express with the fancy decor of the Excess Express. You would go through all the rooms - one by one - beating up pesky Conductor Pawns and coal Badniks. Eventually they could have a homage to Triple Trouble, with Sonic/Tails/whoever running on top of the train as a remix of the famous Act 3 kicks in. The background scenery... hmm, probably a traditional barren desert ala the Road Runner.

-The 1920's. Twirling moustache Badniks, tapdancing Egg Pawns in top hats, everything in black and white, and you're stopping Robotnik from tying (*insert whoever of your choice*) to some train tracks. The music would be bouncy and over-exaggerated, with quiet rolling tape sound effects in the background. Everyone you meet talks by shaking their fists at you. You respond by using cats and pigs as musical instruments.

-One of Robotnik's REALLY giant robots. Yes, a robot so gargantuan that you can dilly-dally about inside it's structure. It would definitely be a final zone, like Cannon's Core/End of the World, with Sonic/Tails/whoever going through each body part, and each part's success counting as the checkpoints. Each body part could be based on certain aspects (Eg: the left leg involves running along the walls ala Terminal Velocity, the right leg involves Metropolis-esque platforming along gears and pistons, the left arm involves dodging heavy fire, etc etc). When you reach Robotnik's control room, you can see *insert island/city/land of your choice* in the background, on the brink of being almost literally stamped on for good.

-Robotropolis Zone. Don't worry, I'm not going all SatAM here (why would I, of all people?), I just always liked the concept of Robotropolis. Just replace SWATBots with Badniks, change SatAM Robotnik to SEGA Robotnik, make the place a little more futuristic, and there you have it: a twisted industrial nightmare, like a mix with the SatAM one and the OVA Robotropolis/Eggmanland. I can see it now; tall metal towers and structures that pierce the dark skies, millions of the most elite Badniks on patrol, black rivers that would require some sort of shield to explore with without slowly dying ala the Toxomister (and even then, it'd be very dark, and that's without mentioning the invulnerable robo-sharks swimming in there...), and the interior of the central tower would do a 180 in terms of visuals and look like a shrine. The boss could be a new take on Metal Robotnik/Black Eggman from the OVA.

-Lighthouse on an abandoned beach. ...I like lighthouses?

-Cyberspace. Yes, I wish for the digital realm to be brought back too. The ShtH design(s) is actually my favourite of the three due to it essentially being Epileptic Tron Zone, but make more use of level-specific gimmicks. And you can keep the green wall protection blockades, but don't have them block every pathway for every ten second period.

-City in the winter. I'm with those that'd like to see this. Not that I ever disliked any of the ice stages in Sonic, but it'd put a new spin on it, as well as the city trope. What can we expect? An ice rink? Sled gimmicks? The more fragile grounds collapsing and creating frozen lakes? And was it even a normal winter, or was it another batshit experiment on Robotnik's part?

-Christmas zone. Beat up elf robots, take on Robotnik Clause (it's Sonic's Christmas Blast all over again...), utilise springs that resemble wrapped presents. But before you do all of that, take the time to explore the stereotypical North Pole village and pull an At Dawn with it's fountain for as long as you want. Just watch out for those wolf Badniks in the forest.

I'd love a 3D level where Sonic doesn't instantly drown from being more than 3 feet submerged in water.

Also digging the moon idea, low gravity with messed up physics could make for an awesome level. And for the giant robot idea it would be really cool if it was Shadow of the Colossus-esque.

More temple levels, like Lost World. That was awesome.

This!

I mean I can only think of 1 and that being lost world. This is something Sega could really go crazy with considering how amazing Lost world was. And honestly I'm sure everyone will disagree with me but I want more ruin/jungle/forest levels like Jungle Joyride. That was absolutely amazing and seeing something like that return in sonic's next game would make me cry tears of joy.

I've always wanted to see a 2D road/sidewalk/highway-based stage. Just have Sonic running around on or around roads, sidewalks, and/or highways/interstates, sorta like Generations's 2D sections of the highway sections of both Speed Highway and Crisis City.

Another would be an contrustion site-namely the ones you see cartoons from the early-mid 1900s. Namely running around or jumping across iron support beams and jumping into and out of rising/lowering huge cylinder-shaped pillars, as well as having hot steel, falling items, flying bird (badniks), and liquid concrete as level hazards as remind the player they are travelling through an area of the contruction site miles off the ground by having a fair share of bottomless pits in some areas.

Remember that part in the beginning of Sonic 3's Angel Island Act 2 where Robotnik sets the whole place on fire? I would love to see another burning forest like that in the series again. That'd just be so awesome.

I know its from Mario Kart, but Sonic would fit in with a Rainbow Road kind of level.

With the levels of Donkey Kong Country 2 like inside a beehive, a swamp, under a well, and a skyward garden/ bush.
