Sonic-related pet peeves?

A pet peeve of mine currently is that it seems people are just in a bit of a hating mood at the moment. Look, I can understand people have dislikes for certain characters and games, but it just seems to get out of hand when that seems to be your main reason for conversing with people is to constantly tell people oh I hate this and I hate that.

Look, I like the comic universe, but I in no way say oh its the only canon and full official canon. I've always been a person that says both are their own canons and universes in their own right. There are  tv show canon, video game canon, and comic canon. They may intertwine a bit between each other, but each is unique in its own way. We shouldn't be constantly fighting over which is right and that this person is right or wrong.

The same goes for the characters. I have my dislikes and likes, but I never say oh they should just piss off and not be around anymore. It just seems like blind hate expression and serves no purpose other than trying to upset others over your opinions. I may respect your opinion, be we shouldn't be trying to force them on each other like we are always right.

That's my piece. I hope it makes sense.

Ya know what's a recent peeve of mine, people blaming characters(particularly Shadow) for the franchise's decline a few years back.

I won't lie and say he wasn't a contributing factor to it, but blaming him for EVERYTHING is bullshit. Shadow wasn't responsible for poorly programmed games, or crappy controls, or any if that.

It just irks the hell out of me to see a character I happen to enjoy get so much misblamed hatred, even years after the fact.

I honestly wish it would stop, since that time is way past and there is no need to keep complaining about something that happened several years ago. I never have thought the characters have bothered the series that much honestly, but with so much complaining, it gets old after awhile.

It did, but it was tame compared to the explosion that came the year after.

Let's see what extra characters did in those years from 1998 to 2006...

  • Shoved Sonic, the main character, out of the spotlight.
  • Were involved in poor stories.
  • Were given terrible, unnecessary gameplay that differed from the norm.
  • Became associated with the series at it's worst.

Poorly written characters in bad stories who weren't fun to play as... no, the characters weren't responsible for the series decline. It was games being terrible in too many ways to say that caused that. But the extra characters were closely associated with all the crap. They were part of the fat that needed to be trimmed for the series to redeem itself in the eyes of many.

Personally, I want to see the wider cast start to return. Facts are facts though.

On the topic of the comics, people saying things like "Archie sucks, the only way to improve them is to make them more like the games and dump out characters like the SatAM cast, the extra echidnas, and the parent characters" to name a few. Now I know that none of you guys are directly saying stuff like this, (well, not towards the SatAM people I think) but it really pisses me off to hear that the worlds can't be separate and still be good in their own right.

I know that Archie is just an advertisement for people to buy the games in handy book form, but for the love of all things good does it have to be just that? They could be so much more! So what if Sonic and friends don't consistently fight the doctor in locales from the games? Who cares if Sonic is able to experience different friendships in a different universe? Can't things be allowed to be different? Mixing in elements from the games to suit the new world is one thing, but saying that Archie sucks because characters that aren't SEGASonic get a lot of screentime or that it doesn't take place in Game Universe can get under my skin quite deeply.

So much as the games shouldn't have to bend to ideals or expectations of fans from the comic, the comic's should have free reign to be it's own stand alone world. I mean, it billed itself as "A world unique and beyond what you know from the SEGA games" after all. It may not have the best writing in the world, or compared to some Sonic games even, but please cut it a little slack.

And scapegoating is scapegoating. It's one thing to say they were bad, the games sucked, and for a solution to be found. It another thing entirely to say X character is responsible for the problems and taking them out will fix things, when even doing that brought all new problems with it to some in Unleashed.

I did say they were a contributing factor, but fans make it seem like they were the ONLY problem and/or responsible for everything you listed.

Like CSS said, even if it is a fact it's still scapegoating to a ludicrous degree, and it's partially why we don't see them at all anymore.

I just remember back in 2006, the amount of rage when Shadow and a "new hedgehog" were revealed for '06, when it was previously expected to be a Sonic-only affair. And then the praise that SatSR got for focusing just on Sonic and nobody else.

It's not the fairest of criticisms, but it's not scapegoating either. The huge cast was a problem in itself that needed to be taken under control before it got any worse. And frankly, removing certain unpopular characters is one of the steps to making things better. Like I say, it's trimming the fat.

EDIT: No one or two characters is to blame for the series going downhill. Anyone saying that it's an idiot, pure and simple. Cutting down the cast considerably and using them all more sparingly though is a good thing. Now SEGA just need to pluck up the courage to make them playable again.

No, it's scapegoating. When you apply unfair critism and the failure of a game, with many other independent variables along with it, and single out something that, while bad in its own right, didn't affect other parts that also resulted in such failure then you've crossed the line into scapegoating.

And dont get me started on how arbitrary they've been on these characters.

Edit: I see you're edit, but I'm still making this a point for people to know.

I praise SatSR for actually getting Sonic's characterization/Portrayal marvelously back on-track after such shitfest's as Shadow and '06 that portrayed him very badly, not because it was solo-Sonica.

A little peeve I have is the lack of portrayal Sonic's parents in Archie get. Bernie and Jules are really interesting characters who have a ton of potential for development. But as side characters and as issues nowadays primarily focus on one story with none of the second or third stories older issues got, they're perpetually doomed to stay as background characters with portrayals that are few and far between. It was cool though how they epically showed the door to Naugus when he attempted to exploit them.

The more and more we constantly try and shift the blame to the characters themselves, the less Sega is going to want to even have them in the background for story purposes. The characters don't always have to be playable, but having the bigger cast allows for the world to have more to do than just fight Eggman. As long as we can get a good story out of the characters, the fact they may not always be playable would likely be ignored. Sure I would love to play with the characters, but its not a super must.

So we need to stop blaming the characters yes and leave them alone. Its no characters fault for why something may not work. That can be blamed on mechanics or writting, not the character themselves. I just hope we can get past this.

We live in a society where people are more comfortable accepting negative stereotypes than anything good, even if it's completely hypocritical.  People complain that Sonic fans are terrible because they complain about things being bad, whilst actually agreeing that things are bad.  So it's bad for a fan of something to think something is bad... when the general consensus is that it really is bad?

As I mentioned maybe a hundred pages back or something, I actually think that all fanbases are, in essence, exactly the same, but for some reason people like to pick targets to make them feel better, even if it doesn't make an iota of sense.  Sonic fans are dumb because they do the exact same thing that the rest of the internet does.  It's just something I grow to accept.  In reality, though, I see it more from other Sonic fans than non-Sonic fans.  But that's probably because I don't frequent forums like GameFAQ's or anything like that.

Oh and the Sonic Cycle, more like the Video Game Cycle, amirite?

I totally agree with you about this. The thought that Sonic fans are bad for complaining about things, while the people saying this agree with those fans, is what drove me off of the website Dorkly for good.

I...don't get it. Surely that design took much more effort than just giving him a smooth texture. Extra effort that just makes it look awful. The fur looks like shit, plain and simple.

Also, the shaven arms really...irk me.

A part of being professional is knowing which 'shortcuts' to take, and a part of the problem with that fan film is that it's makers didn't.

How they managed to not understand that to the point where they decided to place every single quill on Sonic's head baffles me, with their resources it was probably impossible to do so without it looking like he was balding. (and even with better ones, I doubt it will look right)

I'm not sure, sometimes they look fabric, other times they look leather, what are sonic shoes made of? (The red part)

Also I'm now confused, they render sonic in fur, so does that mean that either:

A) Sonics spines are his hair

cool.png Sonics spines are MADE of his hair

Or

C) Sonics spines are part of his skull and covered in hair?

Sonic has the quill equivalent of Anime Hair

Playing a Special Stage in Sonic 1, getting knocked around for so long you eventually get a Continue (or hell, even a 1-up), wiping away damn near every diamond trying to get the Chaos Emerald, missing it each and every pass, getting knocked around to delay getting it even further and ultmately being sent to the "Goal" pissed off and angry.

About sums up why I eventually gave up on getting the emeralds in that one. Without the ability to save scum back in the day, it was a losing battle for me.

I've determined just about every classic stage knocks my teeth in, though. Sonic 2 and Sonic 3's special stage music still make my hair stand on end a wee bit when I hear them. Bloody Tails always blowing himself up, rubbing his immortality in our faces.

Wouldn't it be awesome when Taxman works on Sonic 2 mobile, if he fixes it so that Tails moves as soon as Sonic moves in the special stages? That would please a lot of fans.

I always found it funny in Sonic 4 Ep2, where they made Tails react much faster to Sonic in the special stages, and yet if Tails gets hit he doesn't take damage. Which makes it a little too easy.

That would be a godsend, and I'd probably be willing to try the Special Stages in that version for that reason alone.

It sounds to me like what they did with the Last of Us; they made the girl you escort able to move past the bad guys, including walking right in front of them, without being detected so as to keep the difficulty to a sane level.

It sounds like they went from making the level far too difficult to far too easy, however. It really is a delicate balance I suppose.

With the original Sonic 1 and Sonic 3, the special stages honestly aren't all that bad once you are used to them. They dont seem to be totally unfair a Sonic 2's special stages. With Sonic 1, as long as you know where you are going, you may spend a bit getting to the emerald, but never seems to be too hard to get to. With Sonic 3, as long as you have good reaction skills, getting the emeralds aren't too hard. The speed of the levels after a bit is what throws alot of people off their game when playing it.

Sonic 2 is the one that is so difficult, because of Tails yes, but also the skinny margins of error as well. Some of the goals you need to get can just barely be gotten, so doing it can be rather tricky to frustrating. I usually can't do it on a normal genesis cart. I can do it in mega collection due to being able to save and such, but doing it on a genesis cart usualy just comes down to luck and memorization very quickly.

It would, if it weren't for the fact that the later special stages go Dimps typical absurdly hard. Why are like the first 4 special stages in every Dimps game easy, then the 5th one is a bit trickier, then the 6th one can be tough but easily doable, and then the 7th one is basically from the deepest pits of hell?

I'm probably going to get some flak for this, but this has always bugged me:

Why is it that when any Sonic game (Colors, the handhelds, any Sonic game with 2D levels) shows up, everyone acts like they're somehow "just like the Classics" even though anyone who pays close enough attention would realize that they play very differently/don't even LOOK like they are Classic except perhaps on the most superficial level? How does a high speed boost or super blocky platforming translate into "THEY ARE LIKE DA CLASSICS"? I mean granted there are instances of slow platforming in the classics, but I'm still not seeing how the comparison can even exist when it clearly isn't accurate.
