Sonic-related pet peeves?

Recommended Posts

One of my biggest pet peeves was back when people used to hate anyone who wasn't Sonic,Tails,or Eggman because apparently they're  "unnecessary" or "unimportant", every character is important in his/her  own way and greatly contributes to the series.

But really grinds my gears is the fact that they always refer them as "Sonic's friends" which is a complete load of bullcrap in my opinion because first off: characters like Amy, Knuckles, Shadow, etc, should be treated as characters in their own right and they shouldn't be treated like garbage simply for having a association with Sonic, second off: "friends" wouldn't exactly apply to characters like Shadow, Rouge, Chaotix or heck even Knuckles, I'd call them allies, acquaintances or friendly rivals.

And if you truly believe "Sonic's sh*tty friends are to blame for the series downfall, then you're an idiot.

Indeed. It's just too bad how non-fans and the general gaming media tends to scapegoat characters for the mediocre-to-meh gameplay they've had over the years. It probably also doesn't help that the writing for some characters has been all over the place or just plain bleh (looking at you, Shadow and Silver, no offense).

Like, it's no wonder people got excited when RoL revealed we'd be able to play the other characters, albeit not in the same continuity. But since that game did terribly sales-wise, Sega/Sonic Team are probably going to take it as another sign of "guess people still hate other characters who aren't Sonic, Tails, or Eggman" when that wasn't even a problem out of the game's many problems.

When people say Sonic is dead because there are 3D games now or that Sega hasn't produced good game since like.. Sonic 3. Yeah, the games afterwards had their own share of problems but they had good things about them as well. :||||!

I still get peeved whenever people say Unleashed would've been received better if Knuckles replaced the Werehog.

You'd have to change the entirety of the plot and erase the themes of the duality of light and dark just for one character. Nevermind that by 2008, people had begun the "shitty friend" syndrome after still being burned over how 06' made them play, so the notion that one of those characters that were oh-so-fun to play from that game would be met with less ridicule and cynicism than 'Sonic turning into a Werehog' is simply foolish.

I agree so much! I was actually considering making that kind of statement for this topic since the whole "Werehog should've been Knuckles" has become rather prevalent as of late. I would also like to add that, outside of super-strength and punching, Knuckles and the Werehog don't have anything in common. Knuckles glides, digs, climbs up walls, rolls into a ball, and can spin dash. The Werehog, on the other hand, has claws with which to slash at things, can produce a shield to protect himself, can empower himself via Unleashed Mode, and, most importantly, has stretchy arms, which are used for a variety of actions that Knuckles couldn't hope to replicate (outside of grabbing enemies but even then he's have a lot of trouble with it). In all honesty, comparing Knuckles to the Werehog is like comparing an apple to a banana, so the argument that Knuckles can perfectly replace the Werehog with all that in mind makes even less sense to me.

Even in Japan ?

I don't know if I have the right to say this as I don't live in japan, but I know it's been pretty well known that the Sonic series has never been all that in japan. He's always been more popular in the west. Especially europe.

Since most of the Sonic characters are under 18, It always kind of bugged me that we never got an explanation of where their parents are (with the exception of Cream). Most glaringly is Knuckles, especially since he's supposed to be the last of his kind and Tails due to the fact the he's only 8.

Honestly, the games have been very consistent in portraying the characters as being more independent (and usually more mature) than they would be at their ages in real life. Amy's close to a normal 12-year-old in personality and she still can have her own apartment and get her own groceries, Tails is way more intelligent than an average 8-year-old so can manage himself fine, and I don't think 18 year olds can be full-out government spies. So, I've never wondered it myself.

Because its Sonic thats the werehog thats why people say Knuckles. Knuckles cant even streach his arms!

The argument comes from people not wanting Sonic to have cool powers and want him to eb basic.

Even in Japan ?

Well even though Sonic comes from Japan its not popular. Not alot of people especially in my age dont play Sonic games. It's kinda the same with Pokemon though the games are more popular then the anime.

The argument doesn't come from that. The Werehog is a different and new transformation that basically makes Sonic "not Sonic". It's a completely different gameplay style that this series hasn't ever seen and it's given to this transformation since people were still on the "shitty friends" phase so they just gave it to a different form of Sonic. People don't go "Oh this ability is too cool for Sonic let's take it away from him please! Sonic NEEDS to be basic right fellow Sonic fans? Haha!" Sonic's already got a very cool and well established set of moves that suit him beautifully. People just thought it'd make more sense to give a beat em up style of gameplay to someone like Knuckles because 1. he's a beloved character that likes to fight and has abilities that would transfer well to that style of play, and 2. Werehog was new, and usually it goes "new is bad".

I'll be honest, years ago I used to be on board with the people who wanted Knuckles to replace the Werehog. I don't feel that way anymore because Werehog as an idea has grown on me (I've always thought the gameplay was fun, but for some reason the idea of Sonic transforming into something like that didn't sit right with me. I love it now though.) Thinking about it, it's a shame that we probably won't ever see the Werehog again. He's cool and under appreciated. Though Knuckles, is also cool and under appreciated. Oh well.

Since Sonic's isn't popular in Japan, does that mean that there's a small group of Japanese people who likes Sonic (just like the small group of people outside of Japan who likes Yakuza/RyuGaGotoku including me) or does that just mean that no-one cares about Sonic in Japan ?

Sarcasm aside I'm not going to pretend that the Adventures didn't have some more toned down and realistic levels like Lost World or Iron Gate. Nor will I deny that the Classics had some other weird and colorful levels like Wacky Workbench or Launch Base. But can we please stop acting like the visuals did a complete 180o with the jump to 3D? I mean even the "dark and gritty" Shadow the Hedgehog had some levels like Circus Park and Mad Matrix which could more than match anything from the Classics in terms of sheer surrealism.

I'm fine with Adventure 1's settings, but I've always thought that Adventure 2 was a little on the desaturated side overall. Sure, you have the Pyramid Base levels and the A.R.K. levels that take place on the outside, but all the cities, the prisons, the levels inside the A.R.K. (apart from Cannon's Core), and even the forests (aside from White Jungle, that one does look pretty cool in my opinion), they all feel rather drab to me. Levels like Pumpkin Hill were more of the exception than the rule in that game, or at least that's the impression I get from it.

On the other hand, I've never forgotten about the more colorful stages in Shadow's game. I've always praised Circus Park, and I would love it if a future game had a zone with similar visuals to Digital Circuit. Hell, I wouldn't even be opposed to a Black Comet-esque zone, as long as there were more unique gimmicks and the sort.

It's not that SA was an immediate 180 degree swing, more like SA was 30 degrees off, SA2 30 degrees more, ShtH 60 degrees more than that, etc.

The thing about the "sh*tty friends" complaint is that I can see where they're coming from, since as far as I'm concerned, the alternate gameplay styles were easily one of the worst parts of the Adventures and they probably would've been way better without them...but it's just not correct to lay the blame at the feet of the other playable characters themselves. There's absolutely no reason why they couldn't have included multiple playable characters and kept the basic gameplay the same, like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. At the end of the day, just getting rid of other characters does nothing to help the real problem of Sega's insistence on unnecessary and ultimately deleterious experimentation.

The other day I was playing Sonic 2; before me in the casino zone was a speed boost box. I opened it, only to find myself rolling through the pinball sections. The powerup made no difference.

Well, to be fair, it depends a lot on how you use it. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that particular speed boost in the past.

The one thing that's kind of annoying at first is that weird section in Green Hill Zone where they give you an invincibility box, and then you have to traverse an area with spike pits...but the spike pits are actually also death pits, so the invincibility won't help you if you fall xD

I tend to nitpick/complain about various things related to the Sonic series, and a lot of them are just unpopular opinions, so I'll try and focus on just the actual peeves here.

Any Sonic-related media that forces Sonic/you the player to use him, in any scenario where it makes no sense, other than that he;s the main character. I added other media here, even if I have no examples. For example, the last fight against Emerl in Sonic Battle, of course you have to play as Sonic, which meant I was terrible at it as I couldn't play well with Sonic at all in that game, why couldn't I choose? I'd have breezed through with Tails, Knuckles, or Shadow, but here I am, forced to try and try again with Sonic, just because the game says so... Also lump pretty much all of Generations in there, when either Sonic plays a level/boss that was originally for another character (like Biolizard) as it just bugs me on many levels. I realize why this is true, but it doesn't make me any less grumpy.

Another peeve I have is whenever I bring up Sonic, or anything related to the series, anywhere else, I'm almost always responded to by someone with a rude or negative comment, even more so if I dare to say I like Shadow, his game, or Sonic 06 (and in some cases, so much as saying I don't care too much for S3&K) and it's rarely nice and respectful, but more so general internet assholeishness, because I'm just so stupid and lol-worthy to like the Sonic series and brag about my latest buys, or how much I enjoyed playing through Sonic 2 3DS today. I am just sometimes not allowed to mention Sonic without being attacked in some way, and it's depressing how much this happens to many fans outside of dedicated fanzones. It'd be nice to mention how I enjoy the Sonic series just as much as anyone else can mention they like whatever they like without being insulted for it, or having their opinions forced upon mine, even if I say I'd rather not play that game, as I just want to share.

I'll likely think of more another time.

Of all the things in this franchise, these two related things rile me up the most:

-People talking shit about Amy, Cream, and the Werehog. It especially infuriates me in regards to Cream because her existence is almost always called into question when people discuss her character in a negative way. Let me just say that, if Cream were to become retired from the franchise (joining the likes of Fang and Mighty), then I swear to every powerful force in the universe, be they divine or scientific, heads will fucking ROLL!!!

-The way SEGA/Sonic Team handled (or in the case of Amy and Cream, still handles) the above mentioned characters, which allowed people to talk shit about them to begin with. Flanderizing Amy and making her more aggressive, thus causing people to call her an "obsessed stalker" and "abusive." Not utilizing Cream a lot nor giving her much to do in her sparse appearances, not doing anything to make her more interesting, giving way more focus to her cuteness and passiveness than her badass qualities that are required to make her to fit into the franchise, messing up her role as Amy's sidekick by not utilizing it in favorable ways a lot, and overall not giving Cream much of a tangible purpose or reason to justify her existence and remain relevant. And making the Werehog's gameplay long and tedious, in addition to being very unsuited for the franchise, and not exploring the Werehog in the story enough to justify its presence outside of gameplay.

When people call Knuckles an Enchilada instead of an Echidna. xD

To be fair, it's only a joke.

It always irks me when people act like the levels in the classic games were all a bunch of bright and wacky Green Hill Zones or that the Adventures were somehow defiling Sonic's art conventions by (apparently) being super drab and realistic, as though they didn't have their fair share of strange and/or colorful levels too.

Sonic Adventure did take a more realistic approach though. If you like it then fair enough but don't pretend it didn't happen. Adventure introduced a human population and all of the levels are based on real life environments. The whole point of Adventure was to research real life locations and use them as the basis for the environments of the games. Sonic Adventure is openly realistic and proud of it:

sa_ancient_temple0001.jpg

Even when the Classic Games had levels that were more inspired by real life locales they still had the surrealist and, more importantly, cartoony vibe. They have a totally different art style to Adventure:

I mean if you can't tell the difference I don't really know what to say. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the realism approach, but to sit there and say that Adventure isn't any more realistic or less cartoony than the Classic Games with a serious face is just really silly.
