Sonic-related pet peeves?

Recommended Posts

- People who keep whining for Sonic Adventure 3. They technically already got it. No not 06, I'm talking about Unleashed. Because you want to know what Unleashed was originally called when it went into production? That's right, it was originally called Sonic Adventure 3.

- People who want the freedom fighters in the games. Hell to the no. The games are already over crowded so let them stay in the comics where they belong. Besides, even if they were in the games, a lot of the roles they would have are already taken by other characters:

Sally (love interest): Amy already has this role to an extent.

Bunnie (action girl): Already taken by Amy, Rouge and Blaze.

Rotor (Mechanic): Sorry Tails beat him to that role.

Antoine: There aren't any characters like Antoine, but we definitely don't need any like him.

- Shipping wars between SonAmy and Sonally shippers. These pairings exist in 2 entirely separate continuities. What's the use in fighting?

- People who still want a third season of Satam to be made. It's been almost 2 decades. Give it up already.

- People who still want Ryan Drummond to return to voice sonic. The guy has moved on with his life, why can't you?

- People who want Jason Griffith back as the voice of Sonic. Oh sure you were crying to Sega to fire this guy for 5 years straight, and when Sega let's him go then you want him back? Wtf? And since all your attempts to bring back Ryan failed what makes you think attempts to bring back Jason will fare any better?

- People who say sonic collects coins. The fuck? Does this look anything like a coin to you?

No, I didn't think so.

-Sonic Adventure 3 whining takes a lot of my patience, which I've shown once or twice before. It's the same reason I don't like Sonic 4 being called Sonic 4, a name has no value so people shouldn't expect there to be. Even if Sega does SA3 there's no guarantee the SA1-2 fans will even remotely care for it. Also, everything they ask for except for Chao Gardens have been in other games that just didn't happen to be named SA3.

-People claiming Sonic 06's infamous kiss scene (which I agree, was stupid) is bestiality. It's not. In a world where antropromophic animals of the sort that Sonic and his friends are exists, they share the same rights and life-style as human beings. The reason bestiality is considered horrible and wrong (and most often illegal) is because the animal can't make the same decisions and have the same values to life as as human, it's practically rape/molestation every time it would occur. But if we take Sonic's world into it, then animals of Sonic's sort should have the same rights and views upon them as a human being. Imagine what would happen if we lived in that world and said "My daughter/son can't kiss one of them animals!", that's pretty much racism (or whatever the proper version would be for a different species, specism?) and thereforth claiming it's bestiality is just wrong and (fictionally) offensive. ...But damn, it was a stupid scene.

-Sally Acorn. Never liked her as a kid, never liked her as an adult. Be it cartoon or comic I always found her annoying and badly written in 9 times out of 10, not to mention how it bothers me that they give her more humanlike physiqe than the male characters, but I'm always iffy when it comes to inconsistency in design... Speaking of that.

-The moon. I know there are so many different theories on how the moon reassembled, but until Sega themselves state how it happen this is going to bother me to no end. Would it really hurt ANY of the games to have the broken moon in them? If anything, it'd be a nice throwback, but not even Generations had it.

-Shadow the Hedgehog vs Sonic Adventure 2's ARK flashbacks. I hate how inconsistent the Maria dialogue and things are when we see the same scene in Shadow as we did in SA2, always bothered me.

Sonic%20Adventure%20whale.jpg102091-sonic-heroes-windows-screenshot-close-up-of-sonic-in-seaside.jpg267-thumb-7.jpg

-'Shiny' graphics. Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog and SADX are probably the best examples of this, when the characters look like they were made out of polished metal. It looks so silly to me and to this day I can't understand how anyone in the development teams could look at that and go "Yup, that's the style we're going for".

-People who decided Shadow the Hedgehog was a bad game before playing it. I'm not saying you need to like Shadow, hell, I perfectly understand why most people didn't. But I'm always put off by people who just saw the game and said "This sucks, Sonic shouldn't have guns." to which I would respond "It's not Sonic, it's Shadow" which they then respond to with "Still the same type of game."... ...Yeah, BUT THAT WAS NOT YOUR ORIGINAL ARGUMENT. But fine, my response then is usually "Well the weapons are mostly a tool to help you, I think you very rarely NEED to actually use them" and by then they've stopped listening and just decided that the game is bad without even trying it.

-People who forget the good games. I've seen this a lot lately, since 2008 I've met people saying "I like Unleashed, nice to see Sonic back on his feet", then when Sonic 4 arrived the same people would say "Finally a good Sonic game, phew.", then when Sonic Colours came out they said "Cool, a GOOD Sonic game? That was unexpected, finally!", then when Generations came out they said "Sonic is finally good again after 10 years!" etc. etc. Such a pain to read/hear.

Aaaand, those are the ones I could think of at the moment.

Splash Hill Zone.

What does it have to do with splashing?!

Good point. Sort of how Mission Street is clearly not taking place on one street.

Here's another thing. Knuckles being reduced to Butt Monkey status post-heroes. Say what you want about chronicles but at least that game did an excellent job with his charcterization and treated him with respect.

The fact that every game seems to spawn a meme. Sometimes they're good (GET A LOAD OF THIS, TIME FOR A CHANGE OF PACE!) and sometimes annoying (Find the computer room, That DAMN fourth chaos emerald, It's no use!).

I have enough pet-peeves with the Sonic series for me to make a weekly series of Harry Potter-sized novels about them. This is going to be evident in this post.

First off, there are those people who will bash sonic because it's sonic, or are "Traditionalists" who want the games to be like how they were when they were 8 years old, despite the fact that they do not feel this way for any other series. One video that raised my annoyance for this thing was a 'review' of Sonic Generations by Taco-Man.

Now, it's not really the thing I should be taking seriously because the video is about a cartoon character who may well just be a parody of these 'traditionalists', but this is made by machinima, and whenever Sonic is involved they can never resist the opportunity to poke fun of Sonic's recent exploits (in the case of Sonic for Hire), and in these cases they seem to be implying that they do think this way about Sonic's current state (either that, or they do it to get views, which is almost equally ignorant) so maybe I have the right to complain.

Anyway, it is made clear that this character is not a fan of the game. Now, I'm not one of those people who gets mad at people for disliking a game. Although I think it's a great game, there are valid reasons as to why a person may not like Sonic Generations. There isn't much of a story, no multiplayer, and it's quite short, among other things.

None of these things include part of the game having a 3D perspective, or Sonic's "Friends" merely existing. He seems to be under the impression that Sonic should not have a social life. Doomed to fight alone with no friends aside from the woodland creatures he frees from badniks. In fact, why should the "Friends" that he saves from this game be treated any differently? Why should an established series of characters be replaced with a bunch of non characters, one of which features in a very irritating arcade game?

It's also hinted in various episodes that Sonic 2 is his favourite Sonic game, or one of them, and yet he seems to hate tails. I suppose that makes a little sense considering how annoying Tails is in Sonic 2, but come on, he's not even playable in Generations.

He also mentions in another episode that he's fully aware that Omochao can be turned off despite the fact that he kept complaining about it in the video.

The 'review' doesn't go on after chemical plant, as if he knew that, after the first few zones, the modern acts got considerably better in terms of level design, and he didn't want to admit it.

Even if he is just a parody of these traditionalists, the fact that people have complained about these sort of things in the past, obout other sonic games (and maybe Generations as well?) makes the video all the more realistic. Other Taco man videos also make jokes about Sonic "not doing well since the move to 3D" and other things.

On that note, gamers always seem to percieve Sonic in the modern age as being some withered stoner or alcaholic who's trying to drink his way out of depression. It might be funny if ONE person used it ONE time, but it's constantly being used, as if they're nostalgic for 2006 when at the same time nostalgic for 1992, or something.

Next, I have more than a few problems with Mega Drive collections, ports, re-releases and the somewhat shallow library of games that Sega and Backbone entertainment keep recycling.

If you have a look at the selection of games in Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sega Mega Drive Collection, and Sega Mega Drive ultimate collection, you'll notice that they'll always have Flicky, Ristar and Comix Zone, and nearly always have Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Which must not be given its full name) and Vectorman.

Now Ristar, Comix Zone and Vectorman are considered to be classics, though not as famous or as historical as Sega's other franchises. Alex Kidd and Flicky don't seem to be in the collections for any reasons other than the fact that Alex Kidd has gradually become misinterpreted as Sega's Ex-mascot, and Flicky because it's one of Sega's oldest franchises that just barely lasted into the Mega Drive era.

If you look at Sega Mega Drive collection, aside from Alex Kidd (in the enchanted castle) and Flicky, all of the games are more or less what you'd expect. A couple of Sonic games, some Golden Axe games, Ecco the dolphin, Columns, some Streets of Rage games, Altered Beast and Super Thunder blade (because they're launch titles), Ristar, Comix Zone, Virtua Fighter 2, etc.

In Sega Mega Drive ultimate collection, with the exception of a few Treasure games and a few more shooters, it seems that all they've done is expand on the franchises, so where SMDC may have just had one or 2 Streets of Rage games, SMDUC has all of them. This is most evident in the case of the Sonic series. Despite the lack of Lock-on, all MD Sonic games are there in some form. Even Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. How many people demanded to Sega/Backbone that Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine must be in the collection?

No sports games (no World Cup Italia 90) is justified because they all suck after a few months, but then why are there no Driving games? More people are going to be persuaded into buying the collection if they advertise Super Hang-On, Super Monaco GP or even Virtua Racing to be in the game, as opposed to Flicky and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. For a company called Backbone Entertainment, they're a bit spineless.

The same goes for Steam Re-releases. Downloadable MD games on consoles, despite not being as fun as the original hardware, is justified, but a re-release on Steam is one of the most redundant things ever, due to the fact that free Roms and emulators are often used by people who can't be bothered re-buying an old console, but want to re-play the games of their childhood. Not only that, but I believe it's been confirmed that Sega are aware of the mass use of Roms and Emulators, and yet, unlike Nintendo, aren't bothered about it.

Then you get people who complain about the Sonic fanbase for always complaining about the games.

Complaining about complaining is kinda bad enough, but I like complaining. I'm complaining about complaining about complaining, so it's no surprise. I dislike these people who complain about the Sonic fanbase complaining because, as I've said before, Sega have, in the past, had a tendency to misinterpret/troll the fanbase by going about the fan-service in an almost pedantic manner. For a long time, Fans have asked sega for things that Sega will then try to 'Fix' but would end up fixing nothing and sometimes making the game worse as a result.

It doesn't end there, spokespeople and the like will state silly reasons as to why some of these drawbacks exist, or blatant lies about the games. Examples include Classic Sonic physics breaking the game, or that Casino street is not based on any level in a previous sonic game. Of course the spokespeople aren't going to say that their game is a lazy re-hash, but surely, they can avoid blantantly lying? Probably the most ludicrous example was when a spokesperson said that Sonic 4 isn't for Classic Sonic fans, and that they should play Sonic CD or Sonic Generations. If it's not meant for Classic fans, then why were both games so obviously an attempt at catering to them? If it was meant for modern fans, or casuals, why does the music utilise a subpar synth with Sonic 1 and 2's percussion thrown in for good measure? Why is it even called sonic 4? Another example is Sonic 4's story being completely thought out prior to Episode 1's development or at least comlpletion. This can't be true. Not only would that mean Episode 1 is the most pointless thing in the franchise, but then there are apparently 'no plans' for an Episode 3 at present, meaning work won't start until sales for Episode 2 have proven to be healthy enough.

I also dislike all these sonic fan-tards, fanboys and the abuse of autism/aspergers in general.

You can only go so far into liking something. Because I have, among other things, greater and more productive interests than Sonic, I don't let Sonic become an important part of my life, but even if it did become an important part of my life, I know I'd probably have the concience and self-control to know when I'd be taking it too far. These people either don't have the self control to snap out of it or don't want to snap out of it. The people who I'm talking about will range from people who try and intert a large portion of Sonic into their everyday life, to the people who are members of Sonic Passion, or that crazy man who made a religion based on Sonic. Imagine a middle aged man like that.

Now, I have asperger syndrome, but at the same time, if I know something I'm doing or going to do is wrong, I usually prevent myself from doing it. I've mentioned this on other forums, but I despise these people who have some form of autism (which, for all we know, may not even be real in some cases) and then blame their actions on this on the internet. If you're having a real conversation with someone, you may say something before you think. However, when writing a post on a message board, or a comment on YouTube, or making a video, you have the option of editing what you are working on, so that anything offensive, nonsensical or otherwise can be changed. Often when writing posts I find I write a whole load of nonsense and decide to delete it before posting because it's stupid. You can proofread things before submitting them, so you are never really in too much danger of making an unexpected fool of yourself if you know what you're talking about.

Like the 'Unpopular Sonic opinions' thread, expect this to be a thread I keep returning to, because I have the feeling that it will be. :P

Another thing is when people come up with COMPLETELY nonsensical ideas for Sonic games. Like having EVERY Sonic character ever made playable in one game. (not kidding, someone actually came up with this)

Another thing is when people beg for SEGA to make a Dreamcast 2. It's not gonna happen, SEGA left the console market more than a decade ago. They're doing better as a third-party company, and it would make no sense to randomly come with a new console, and compete with the big three.

Those who are so anal that they cuss you out for saying Eggman instead of Robotnik. I heard that Richard Kuta yelled at little kids IRL for that

The misguided belief that Sonic Adventure 3 is the only true savior of the series. It's hyped to the point that nothing will live up to it. And besides, 06 is SA3

People who cry out for the freedom fighters to replace all of sonic's friends. Lol no

Those who cry WHY IZ SAINK IN A CAWR!!!! Because running is prohibited and requires different skill than car racing you stupid dumb fucks

Those who say you can't be a Sonic fan and a Mario fan. That rivalry is over fucking moron.

Those who say that if it doesn't have a chao garden then it's not worth their money. Go buy a fucking virtual pet then and quit bitching at this series. And while I'm at it, the fact that so many chao garden fanboys can't even spell it right and always call it a choa garden. Lol

The stereotype that if you're a modern fan then you're just some 8 year old kid that doesn't know any better and if you're a retrofan you're some 30 year old angry autistic virgin living in your mom's basement wearing diapers. Surprisingly, both are incorrect just like every other stereotype out there.

That's not all of them. I got angry just writing this lol

...Who even says that anymore? Maybe in the early 2000s when the Adventure changeover was still relatively new, but nowadays even those who really cannot stand Sonic's game cast have resigned themselves to the fact that their fave characters are SatAM/Archie exclusive now, and fight more to defend their priority in those media against those who want the game cast to take over.

Well, okay, maybe there are some crazies like that, but they're so minor that you'd rarely see a complaint like that just by casually strolling.

I also hate that adventure fanboys will bash games such as Unleashed and Black Knight for having alternate gameplays styles that do not blend well with the speedy platforming the series is known for (something I can agree with them on). But when you point out the the adventure games that they worship so much have the EXACT same problems, hoo boy they will get anal about it.

They will go off on you and say, get this, that shooting and treasure hunting aren't alternate gameplay, but character specific gameplay. Their logic of this explains that since tails is a tech expert and knuckles is a guardian of the Master Emerald, they must have these gameplay styles tacked on to them because it fits their character perfectly.

bullshit.jpg

Give me a break. First of all, tails and Knux had these type of roles since the genesis days and yet in those games they played just like sonic but with their own unique moves. And this was also shown in the advance trilogy, plus the way they played in those games was infinitely more fun than how they played in adventure 2 so that right there throws the "character specific gameplay" bullshit out of the window.

Besides, it nothing more than another attempt to make the adventure games seem like something hand crafted by god anyway.

The clusterfuck that is Adventure conversation insofar as determining what an Adventure game is and whether or not we've had an SA3 before. No one can successfully define what an Adventure game is but will nonetheless be quick to denote Sonic 06 or Unleashed as SA3 anyway. I'm as sick, if not more so, of people trying to stuff this nebulous concept and their opinion down fanboys' throats packaged as some kind of truth in order to shut them up as I am fanboys bringing it up as a potential franchise savior.

Have you seen around the web? Yes that line of thinking has lessened but it seems to still be very prevalent and out there without a doubt, "WE DONT WANT SANIKS SHITTY FRIEDNDS LIKE SILVUR AND AMY WE WANT SALLY!!!!!"

Granted, most of those comments are mostly fir replacing Amy with Sally, but still a fair share that cry for a complete overhaul

As for the whole Sonic Adventure 3 thing, all it is, is just a name. Allegedly, several Sonic games were going to be called 'Sonic Adventure 3' at one point, and others were certainly aspiring to be some sort of equivalent. You get people who say that Unleashed or 06 is not Sonic Adventure 3 because of the gameplay styles and aspects not being how they were in adventure 1 and 2.

The main things that people believe 'define' Sonic adventure games from other Sonic games are the following

  • Alternate Gameplay styles
  • A semi realistic setting
  • A new playable character or more
  • Character development
  • A gritty-ish story
  • Chao gardens

But there are so many things Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 have in common that you could list the following:

    • Tails learning to be more independent, regardless of whether or not he learnt the same thing in the previous game.
    • Being on the Dreamcast, GameCube and seeing a re-release as a downloadable multi-platformer 11 years later.
    • having at least one character that a large chunk of people will find unbearable to play as.
    • having a camera that several people will find awkward.
    • contradict the previous game in some way
    • introduce a new guide (like Tikal or Omochao)
    • ages badly (to many)

Also, I hate that when I disagree with a popular opinion among the fanbase, they say I'm "not a true Sonic fan".

You are not a True ______ Fan is irritating no matter what medium it's applied to. So just because I don't worship something to the point of making a shrine for it makes me not a fan? What am I then? Second Class Fan? Whipping Boy Fan?

Whenever someone who has never read the comics (as in like, just berifly glanced at it, to has only read the relatively old issues) constantly pull the "melodramatic furry drama" card.

Yes, things still aren't exactly perfect but they have gotten a lot better since those days, the comic actually somewhat feels like a lighthearted action story, like I said, it isn't perfect, but it's at lest better than that imo.

-Ahem. I hate it when fans claim their favorite character(s) is so much better than every other character in the series, like they'll go on and on about how said character is perfect and so awesome, while demean and say why another character isn't as great, or just downright awful. This is mainly because of my time I've spent on the Sega forums, but good god people can be biased in regards to their favorite characters; some people claim that characters like Shadow, Blaze, and Silver don't fit with the series simply because "they don't have any quirky personality traits", since when does being wacky make you fit into a series? And I don't think I need to get started on Total Shadow.

- Somewhat related to the first, but I hate it when people claim the classic characters are somehow "better" than the modern ones simply because of being classic, comments like "The only characters we need are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman everyone else should just die" just make me want to punch somebody. Just because a character came first doesn't make them better than anyone else fucktards.
