Game Grumps

I'm noticing that it seems that smash's biggest weakness seems to be that there's only one attack anyone can do out of a dash.

Melee had this wonderful thing called crouch cancelling where you could interrupt your running animation with a crouch pretty much straight away. It's a common technique used by competitive players as it not only allows for more flexibility in your approach but it means that you have more options in terms of attacking. You can't do it in Brawl unfortunately.

Uh, probably not considering that it regularly makes top games of all time lists. Never played it myself though.

It has aged, really, really badly.

It's one of those games that was revolutionary for it's time but no one can claim with a straight face that it holds up today. Everything it's done has since been done better by far superior games, and the once great controller has aged as well as Sunday milk from 1994.

Well, here goes nothing...

I never played the N64 Golden Eye, but is it really as bad as they say?

I bought the game off Ebay last year and played it for the first time and I thought it was pretty fun. It's a bit dated, but it's still enjoyable. It might have to do with the fact that Perfect Dark is my favorite game of all time but I really didn't think the game was THAT bad. The multiplayer maps were memorable and hell, I've found myself trying to recreate Bunker and Facility in Timesplitter's mapmaker modes (I keep running out of memory though, sadly)

I found the Single Player to be a lot more involving than games do today. I've played Call of Duty: Black Ops and I found myself watching as I go through a 10 minute long scripted event (I'm not even kidding) with no player activity and during the times when I DO get to shoot people, it isn't in the slightest bit of interesting. In GoldenEye however, you're given sets of objectives for each level (ranging from stuff like destroy all alarms/cameras to rescuing/protecting certain characters) and I think they're actually designed well enough to replay over and over and over again (particularly Dam, Facility and Silo). It's not always a just go forward and watch scripted events. That's not to mention that there's also a degree of stealth that was introduced in the game that adds some depth to the levels as well...

Overall, It's a different playstyle as its levels and controls (1.2 ftw) are made for speed running, and I think it's definitely still worth trying out. TimeSplitters tried to recreate this (and they did pretty well at it too) but unfortunately, no one else seems to want to recreate it because Multiplayer is a huge priority over Single Player these days, not even the Call of Bond: GoldenEye Reloaded Warfare remastering bothered recreating the playstyle either... sad.png

I will admit though that there are parts of the game that would not fly with today's standards though. The presentation is practically nonexistent (This would be a huge problem had the game's Single Player not have been NEARLY as fun as it is) and there's also an extreme lack of polish as well. The frame rate dips despite the extremely basic graphics and multiple objectives aren't very clear on what you're supposed to do or HOW to do them entering borderline Guide Dang It territory. Enemies are incredibly stupid and exploitable (I think it makes for some extremely funny moments though), and the overuse of Respawning enemies for difficulty makes the lack of Regenerating Health very frustrating, especially in the infamous escort missions with Natalya.

Multiplayer on the other hand is debatable, I'll agree that it feels dated even when compared to Perfect Dark (released only a few years after), but I still think it can be pretty fun because the maps are designed well, especially if both players deathmatching actually know what they're doing (and aren't just playing on 1.1's control scheme like a bunch of n00bs like these guys are).

tl;dr: GoldenEye's still good, but it isn't perfect. It's dated in certain aspects, but it is no way as much as a heaping pile of garbage as it's made out to be in the video. Also, these guys are playing like a bunch of n00bs which makes it hard for me to take them seriously anyway (but then again, it's Game Grumps, so what else is new?)

Goldeneye is fucking fun as hell, it doesn't hold up well duh but i still cherish it, one of those things you had to grow up with i guess. The reboot they did a few years ago was fun, you should check it out.

I don't think anyone watches them for quality gaming really.

On the subject of Goldeneye's quality, enjoyment is hardly a necessary component attributed to a game's overall quality. One half of Sonic Unleashed is always brought up as a fun game by people, but that doesn't mean that it was necessarily a good one, since it was an atrocious mess of bad design choices and lack of pacing.

Goldeneye 007 might still be fun in the eyes of many (and I do enjoy it from time to time) but it is an unfathomable mess of a console shooter, and trying to attribute that to the lack of talent of one person who exaggerates for comic effect and who's never played it by unironically calling him a "n00b" is a rather big level of ignorance to fathom. A great amount of it's shortcomings is already stemmed from the N64 controller just not being good for this type of genre, but also the fact that where it flukes is in areas that can only really improve as time passes and talent, technology and limitations extend. In single player the AI catapults the immersion out of the window, the general feedback of the game's control, combat and weapons feels non-existent, the basic multiplayer doesn't have nearly as much content to go by for variety, the graphical aspects are disjointed, bad pacing, presentation and direction hamper the flow, it goes on.

Goldeneye set a benchmark and has the setup of what mainstream FPS games lack these days, which is that level of non-scripted and freely designed maps, but it's not to be held as an example when that benchmark has been met by other games since then like games such as Half-Life, and if a person is found criticizing it and not enjoying it on account of all of the above considering how much of an aged game it is then it'd make less sense to criticize their ability to play and more the bad direction of the game and how it's built. Part of what makes a timeless game timeless is that anyone can pick it up, see how it's influenced things but also appreciate how well it's held up even over ten years later. Then again, how many times haven't we heard criticisms that people who do these shows are "n00bs who suck at games" because they're not excelling it with flawless victory and praising it?

To be fair it's almost a thing for a small number of Rare games to age slightly questionably, particularly in a lot of eyes Banjo-Tooie and DK64 for their obtuse amount of content. And arguably Perfect Dark. Although I love the two former so I probably shouldn't admit that.

Also Quake was always better.

Hence my rhetorical question in the end... :/

That's just the thing though, the N64 controller still controls well for the game, but its default control style is stupidly mapped to 1.1 (which they were both using), which controls horrendously for any kind of decent play. That's like playing Super Mario Bros. upside down and complaining that it's hard to control because you weren't playing it right.

I don't need them to play like some kind of TAS speed runner or something like that, but if they're gonna complain, they should at least play on the control style that the game was designed for. If they were playing on 1.2, I wouldn't really had complained about that.

That aside, I must say, I respect your post, Carbo. I was expecting someone to go full flamy on me, tear me a new one by quote dissecting every detail in my post and explain to me why I was wrong in every single way possible. I'm going to disagree and say that I still think GoldenEye has a nice feedback when you shoot an enemy (something I didn't even get from Black Op's campaign), but that aside, you actually explained very valid points that I don't think I could have thought of without stepping back to look at the game as a whole, unfortunately. Kinda depressing now that I look at the game that way but I guess it's the depressing truth (I still like the game though). Well played...

I prefer Unreal Tournment over Quake, but then again, I haven't played the ones before Quake III yet...

In this weeks Game Grumps the roles of Egoraptor and Jontron will be played by Gordon Freeman and Pokemon Trainer Red.

Damn this show is really getting popular to have such notable guest stars

I loved the concept of this episode, and the beginning had me very amused. Of course, as it dragged on you really notice the soulessness of the game, and I don't think either Jon or Ego's commentary would have made it any better. It's just a dull game.

In other words, don't waste my time watching yet another episode of NSMBWii. Got it. At least the animal crossing episode was hilarious.
