Which parts of Sonic 4 felt like a true sequel?

I've only played Episode 1 unfortunately because Episode 2 isn't on a nintendo console though I might buy it for PC. The thing is I really want Episode 2 cause it doesn't look half bad...

Anyways Episode 1 does feel like a sequel a bit, but other than the fact is too fricken easy at parts, you just mash the a button. Why did the implent the homing attack, I do not know. I think it makes it much easier to targer on springs, killing enemies etc.

Though I don't like those endless pits like in Casino Street or whatever that Casino Night stage rip off is called. I mean that's the thing, why do all 4 stages look like from previous games? AND ONLY FOUR ZONES? wtf 4 zones is so little, even Sonic 1 had Six stages, and they had 2 acts each as well. But quality of quantity I guess. Also why is every single fricken stage "inspired" by Sonic 1 and 2? It's true that some genesis stages use stages similar to the previous ones: Carnival Night, Emerald Hill but atleast they still look noticeably different. Casino Night, and Splash Hill barely do IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I did actually have fun playing this game especially in Mad gear zone, but it doesn't really seem like a sequel to me... Sonic Advance was more worthy of title of Sonic 4 imo.
