Was wondering when this thread would pop up, and I'm surprised it wasn't made earlier. Seeing your comics and art along with other's stuff on here and elsewhere over the years is what prompted me to stop being so shy and protective about my own characters and stuff when it came to posting things online, so I always like seeing more of what you create, both on here and on DA whenever I'm on there, which I'll admit, is sorta not often.

I, too, am surprised that you are just now making an topic with your awesome art, JezMM. I was always impressed with the fact that you create your own avatars. I enjoyed your comics too, especially the Mario one. I got a good laugh out of that one, very clever with the booze/boos reference. You have some really nice work here, and I hope you share some more with us soon. smile.png

Some new girly arts and some more old funny stuffs for those who haven't seen them:

Kay, a character I designed just for porn lol. dA version is a little cheeky in terms of top tightness so artistically censored here for your (denial of) pleasure.

Zombie I drew while waiting for The Walking Dead ep 4 to download.

And here's some more vidja game comicy stuff:

This year I successfully completed 24 Hour Comic Day again!

Click here to read it in full (or here to start from the page following these four)!

I think next year I'll try and arrange a 24 Hour Comic Day topic to see if we can get some more people doing it all together here on SSMB. =D To those completely unfamiliar, the challenge is to make a 24-page (or 100 panels if you want a digital-exclusive "infinite canvas" style comic) comic in 24 hours, from scratch. No pre-planning or preperation is allowed at all beforehand. If you have ideas they must remain in your head until the 24 hours start. Character design, story planning, thumbnailing, anything else you do to make a comic must be done in the 24 hours. Of course, "meta" pre-planning like getting your tools and food arrangements together are totally okay.

Hmm, I've been meaning to try to critique some of your art.

It is nice to be complimented, but often you feel like your not getting vital information and improving when you only get gushing. Don't get me wrong, your art is cool, but everyone can improve in some way. And I feel your art is lacking in some areas, but I don't want to offend or anything. It's just from my point of view and I'm only trying to help.

Firstly, I'm not sure if all your characters are the same person, but the faces all look the same to me. Specifically, the female characters. You need to change more than the hairstyle for creating additional characters. The shape of the eyes, nose, chin, all these need to look different to give the feel of an entirely different human. It's not just the body shape and outfit that gives them a new look. Related characters would look similar though.

Secondly, your 24 hour comic has a cool first panel of a dynamic view of the sign of the shop. It helps set a mood and identify the location the characters are at. But I've never seen you draw your characters like this. I mostly see straight whole body drawings. You can create a new feel of a character by simply adjusting the angle the viewer looks at the character. For example, having a low angle on your character, gives the impression of authority. It looks like your character is standing above your viewers.

By changing the perspective of the viewers, you get a wider range of ways to express a characters traits and add an extra layer of depth.

These are all things I'm well aware of and doing my best to slowly creep away from mind you.

With regards to faces, I've recently been sort of experimenting with style.  That is to say I'm not necessarily working hard to make sure every character has a different face, but working out what I can "get away with".  My problem is that, I don't want to mess with my character designs too much when I'm already over half way through my comic series.  I also have the much more vain problem that I want all my main characters, unless they are intended to be particularly comedic, to be attractive.  When I look at styles I love, like Scott Pilgrim's and... well various animes lol, I'm more impressed with their ability to make unique looking characters out of such minor differences (hell, even your current sig is an example of ridiculously minor differences making easily recognisable characters).  It is also worth mentioning that to be honest with my main drawing style I have been experimenting with giving my characters unique facial features in every picture.  Different eye shapes, different ways of drawing mouths and lips, different nose shapes, and obviously they all have different bodily proportions.  Essentially the main problem is that as I develop my own style from various influences I only "know how to draw" the stuff I've already drawn lol.  Even something like deciding "okay this character looks too similar to another one, this time I'm gonna try drawing her face different", and I just cannot shake the whole "god this looks so off" regardless of what I produce as a result.  Just as an example, when put side by side do my characters still all look like the same person to you (granted this pic is from last year and missing a few people)?

rainbowbyjezmmd4g94yz.png

Just as an example, I seperated out the eyes and noses just to show the kind of minor differences I put into each character (these aren't consistent across EVERY picture I've drawn as I've been deciding what works and what doesn't for each character):

saythatcritiquetomyface.png

Mouths I find harder to vary.  Generally I give my characters either a "cute" mouth or a "mature" mouth as I mentally call them, in terms of how shapely I draw the lips, or whether I give them an anime-esque simple curve.  I also wonder if there is a case of me, having drawn them, know exactly what was intentional and what wasn't.  But to the average viewer, they would see the small variances in faces to simply be me being unskilled and inconsistent.  So this is just to say all those subtle diferences ARE intentional!  Lol.  From the left, that first nose is how I wanted it.  The second I intentionally made more pointy just at the bottom and straighter the rest of the way, and the third one I intentionally gave a much smaller curve etc.

The problem with an anime-inspired style is the further I stray from the basic "attractive" head shape too, the more goofy a character looks.  This is why wacky designs like my character Prof. Chin are kept only for characters that aren't meant to be attractive looking in some capacity.  But it is also a case that my Phantasm Dyad characters (which are also my most often drawn) are all well-established as being drawn in this certain, consistent, only-subtle-variances style.  As you see in either of my 24 hour comics, when drawing in other styles I experiment a little more with character designs.

As for perspective goddaaaaamn I have tried lol.  It's so ridiculously hard.  Here's a couple of attempts:

Low Angle Ones:

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/Spliff-195325909

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/The-Ghost-Of-The-Forest-165275044

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/Phantasm-Dyad-Page-G-44-332518287 (Panel 7)

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/Phantasm-Dyad-Page-G-34-328373252 (Panel 3)

Leaning Forward-y Ones:

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/Phantasm-Dyad-Cover-Page-13-243861694

http://jezmm.deviantart.com/art/Entrance-252943139

Thing is the majority of my drawing time has to be used on my comic or else I will just never get it done at a consistent rate.  Therefore most of my full coloured standalone pieces are me drawing for entertainment, not practice (I usually try to do one new thing with each picture of course but nothing massively daring).  All of my stuff working on these problems comes out shit and isn't worth colouring so I'm like "well goddamnit I wanna at least draw something decent today" and will draw something easy lol.

Naturally these aren't excuses nor am I poo pooing your recommendations, just some background to the way my style is, and some "proof" that I am already attempting what you suggest, even if I have little patience for hardcore studying when it comes to drawing.  The comic already feels enough like "work" as it is for a hobby lol.

Ah! Now that you've layered out the characters and differences together, I can see them more clearly. I should point out my eyesight is pretty bad though, I should be wearing my glasses, but I can't be arsed. lol

Anyway, I can see that you draw the eyeris thin and long. I can't really tell if the eyes are different colours as that is something else that can help identify and separate each character. The shapes of the faces also look very similar to me. But I can see some subtle differences between the characters. The flatter chin look you have here is often drawn for younger characters, by making the chin longer and thinner it would give the appearance of an adult.

Rider is a perfect example to share. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/607/animegirlhd.jpg/ The perspective also helps portray a sexy look.

I'm also trying to master perspective and your right, it is tricky. There's a little guide a fellow artist made to help with this sort of thing, but only for the head. I reckon once the head is done, the rest of the body should flow easily enough. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43/animeheadanglesperspect.jpg/

If it was a joke, then fine. But if your not having fun with your comic, then you must be doing it wrong. A hobby is supposed to be fun, it's certainly not supposed to feel like work.

If you want to learn how to draw certain things, it would be better to read up on how others and professionals do it. I have a large collection of the "How to Draw Manga" series of guide books. It can be a pain, but by putting in the time to learn new tricks, you may improve in ways you never imagined. That's what I'm hoping for, with me. lol

Ah that's an interesting insight, I'll consider trying it out on some of my more "mature" characters who I want to evoke that look from. I will say, the thin irises are a leftover from my Sonic fanart days! I almost keep them as an artstyle keepsake of my origins with my drawing lol. I also find it makes it easier to make it very clear which way a character is looking by not having the iris fill up the whole eye. It is a problem on more zoomed out pictures though I admit.

That's a good reference, thanks. The trickiest part of the process to me is translating these semi-realistic art styles into my own. I have no interest in drawing realistically - which I know is terrible because people who can draw realism easily have no trouble with stylised looks - but I find realism unattractive so it bores me. I'm still experimenting every time I have to draw looking up at a head with what lines look like "too much" in my minimalistic facial style. But I have to draw people looking up all the time in comics so yeah I get my practice in with that one at least.

If it was a joke, then fine. But if your not having fun with your comic, then you must be doing it wrong. A hobby is supposed to be fun, it's certainly not supposed to feel like work.

Oh only semi-serious lol. The main part I find boring is inking - sketching takes the most effort but is the most creative part - colouring is the least creative but is also the easiest since it's mostly just pointing and clicking since I only shade scenes where shading is necessary for the atmosphere of the scene. But inking is always such a pain since it's so tedious - drawing the same thing again but refined.

I always enjoy the end result, it always feels "worth it". The reason it feels like work is because I literally have made it my schedule to AT LEAST sketch, ink or colour one page every single day now. So if it's not a day where I felt like drawing to begin with it can "take it out of me" stamina-wise and I won't want to draw anymore for the day.

On the flipside I've been more productive than I ever used to be before I forced myself to do it and just did it "when I felt like it" - leaving it for weeks on end when a page was coming up that I knew would be difficult or boring to draw (i.e. a non-dramatic, but necessary conversation to further the plot). Since I started doing this seriously, I've kept a consistent update schedule of three pages a week (with a 1 week break in the middle of each episode and two weeks at the end of each episode) since June last year. Sometimes you have to make your creativity "work" to churn stuff out like that, and sometimes it's enjoyable and sometimes it isn't. But if nothing else, even on days where I'm like "UGH FINALLY" when finishing my daily quota... I'm always happy I did it, even if I was dying to "just take a day off".

I have a few books that I often refer to. My current favourites are "Making Comics" by Scott McCloud for general theory, and "Basic Anatomy for Manga Artists" is a very insightful one by Chris Hart that shows how you can apply real body structure to the anime style.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to say, generally I find heads one of the easier things to do from awkward angles, it's the rest of the body I have a problem with! Arms and legs in particular have really subtle shapes that I just dunno how to translate into wacky perspective. For example generally the top halfs of legs are "fatter" than the bottom halves, but from a low angle, it'd be the opposite, or they'd even be about the same thickness... just... so hard to keep things in correct proportion.

I was gonna leave it with that, but your edit motivated another reply. This picture I'm about to show you, is from a book I actually own.

5639137753_1bd6224bf8.jpg

I can probably get you a much better shot of these pages if I scanned my own copy.

So note the legs of the character on the left page. Even from the lower angle, the ankle area is actually still drawn thinner than the upper leg and looks completely natural. It may be only slightly, but it is still thinner. I figure'd it'll be something worth knowing.

Ahh thanks!  I'll hold onto that image as a point of reference if I need to draw from that angle in the future.

Gotta say, loving what you are putting out here with your drawings. Also a satisfying art style.

Definitely looks like you're having fun with that.
