The level design, enemy placement, and bosses ruin it for me. What idiot at Dimps thought springs that lead you into crushers/spikes, enemies directly in your path while you're standing on platforms that take you somewhere, and bosses that completely take place over bottomless pits were good ideas?

Sonic Advance 3 is a eh game. I like the pairs and the gimmiks and that save the game from being horrible. The spindash was still useless and the momentum was shit

I'm kind of confused as to how you can say that about Advance 3 and yet praise Sonic 4 even though that is the game with those exact issues.

Unpopular opinion - I've always found Sonic to be the most enjoyable character to play as in each game where the has been multiple characters (barring probably 06 but that's not really a big deal because everyone is garbage in that game and even then he's still better than the majority of them).  Whatever additional skills he had always felt the most intuitive and fluid to me comparative to, say, Tails' flight or Knuckles' gliding.  Whether it be Sonic 3&K's elemental shield abilities, Advance 1's air dash and slide kick, or SA2's myriad of abilities Sonic always just felt the most "right" to me.  And heck, he's the title character of the series and he's just naturally super cool.

Time for another unpopular opinion: After replaying through the Advance series again, I liked the Advance trilogy.

Advance 3's team gimmick can provide very nice shortcuts in bosses and levels. My favourite level must be Cyber Track Act 1 and I really like Advance 3's music. Yes, the level design can be quite dickish at times but I enjoyed it for the most part. Bonus points for Eggman for making Gemerl to remind us about Emerl and he actually lives ;)

The other two are pretty good as well. Advance 1 is a very nice platformer and Advance 2 does give quite the rush but it killed a lot of platforming because of it but it's pretty fun as well.

I didnt have any problems with Sonic 4. The game was fast and if I time my jump dashes right I can really do good on the speed runs. Casino Street 2 is a good stage to do it

This is unpopular? I figured Sonic's playstyle was the favorite of many people.

Here's one from me: I hate the vocal themes this franchise pushes out, especially from Crush 40. I get people like the cheese but I personally can't stand it. Awful lyrics are the killer. I'm far more fond of themes like Sonic Lost World.

Oh come on.... we all know he would voice Big!

Nah, he'd probably voice Omega, or Shadow, or...Omochao.

Sorry another unpopular opinion: all and all I pefer Sonic games where:

-Sonic has a full range of moves (or at least the homing attack and or boost)

-It focus on Sonic as a character

-really fast

-light hearted to dark tone story

Either I haven't played the game in so long, or I must have been lucky because very few of those things have affected me. Really, the main thing that I had a problem with was SAdv3 was its schizo-as-fuck level design that made me afraid of any cliff leading to a bottomless pit, and that got worse when I hit Chaos Angel.

Unpopular? Opinion; I hate the bosses in Advance 2.

Who thought it was a good idea to have running bosses in this game? I always have the hardest time with trying to hit a boss, while at the same time trying to dodge the attacks. I think it's the 2D playing field - because I'm actually okay with the 3D running bosses in Unleashed as I find them much easier to handle.

Its not the 2D really, its mainly the slopes that appear and gimp you're jump.

That's unpopular? I'm pretty sure a good majority agrees that Advance 2's bosses were the worst out of the 3. My least favourite was the Egg-Go-Round, it's just bullshit to the max.

If this is considered double-posting, I apologize.

This might be slightly popular: Sonic R's soundtrack is the most underrated Sonic soundtrack yet.

I mean sure the lyrics are cheesy but the composition of Jacques are so good and melodious, that I just don't give a damn. The game itself may be mediocre at best but the music is really good. Super Sonic Racing is probably one of my favorite Sonic vocal themes and a lot more people needs to appreciate these songs more.

I love the boss designs and implementation in Advance 2.  But I think the way the game functions sort of makes them needlessly hard.  If it were on a modified engine made to suit what they were going for, it might be better, but as is, beating them is rarely a matter of skill as much as it is wrestling with the extra-firm rail.

To my recollection, chaos angel was the only one that ever really got that bad (god I hate that level) but the rest were pretty fair game.

We did! Many times, we had Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Unleashed and most importantly, Sonic 06!

Seriously guy, we got sick of all that SA3 stuff, it's no longer popular.

Unpopular Opinion: I realized today that I actually don't like the orchestral themes we've gotten for this franchise all that much, from Unleashed onwards.

I'm not musically inclined so it's difficult to describe my apathy in concrete terms, but basically when you're used to listening to incidental music from Hans Zimmer, John Powell, John Williams, James Horner, Michael Giacchino, Carlos Siliotto, Alex Wurman, and heck even M83, the orchestral stuff we get in Sonic games is just painfully lacking in terms of standout leitmotifs or soul-stirring compositions. Even when it comes to games only, Koji Kondo's stuff from Galaxy and Skyward Sword, or Grant Kirkhope's music from Viva Pinata, was absolutely gorgeous and heartrending.

But Sonic games' orchestral themes do nothing for me; they feel like a series of generically-produced adventure-sounding themes. There's something amateurish and flat about them to the point that I'd rather Sega further outsource the music to better composers, go back to lyrical themes, or go back to jingles.

Granted that the orchestra themes didn't fit Sonic very well, that's why I like Wonder World. It actually fits with a Sonic game due to its fast pace and upbeatness, which is why I think Wonder World is the best orchestra theme in the Sonic series.

Eh, only the first Unleashed theme felt that way to me, I actually really love Wonder World (if that counts) and Colors's Orchestral theme

Completely understandable. Sometimes orchestral themes kind of make a Sonic game lose their identity in the musical department, and I can see why it would make so much of it all blend together and not be recognizable.

Granted, I would disagree with you to some level. I'm fine with having orchestral songs as the main theme of a game as long as it fits and tries to be memorable. I don't like Lost World's OST all that much, but Wonder World is one of the few standouts for having a catchy melody, and its bright hearted yet adventurous vibe suits the game's atmosphere perfectly. However, if I got to choose between vocal themes or orchestral themes being the main theme of a game, I would choose vocal in a heart beat. They just do a better job explaining what the tone of the game is, and for better or worse, leave more of a memorable impression on people.

I don't feel the same. I've listened to Wonder World and, if I'm to be fair and compare it to other orchestral themes in and out of the medium, it does absolutely nothing to move me. Like every other one we've had, it gets the job done of being a theme but it doesn't stir the soul. There aren't any great highs and lows, that aren't any recurring themes that are made particularly interesting by emotional appropriation like in film scores. All of these themes we've had in recent years are just an orchestra playing to me. Again, they need to outsource them to someone who's a better composer if they're going to insist we continue having them.

And to note, I'm not against having orchestral themes for Sonic games. But I want orchestral themes that are at or near the quality level of the composers that I listed above. I don't think they're there yet.

I got really sick of the World Adventure theme for being remixed in EVERY OTHER BLOODY FUCKING CUTSCENE, like seriously, it's like they had to use it all the time. His World was no better for this, though.

Yeah, I can definitely sympathize with people in that regard.

What really irritated me was how repetitive the looped version of the song is. It gets really old hearing it in every menu and jingle, that I get absolutely sick of hearing it unless it's the full version. It's a real shame, because we don't even get to hear it fully until the credits- and that's just the later half of the song. Every remix is the looped version, and that really grinds my gears. Don't get me wrong, I love The World Adventure in its entirety, just not in the actual game.

However, I tend to be a little more defensive with the His World overuse. Whereas in Unleashed, most remixes were just an edited version of the main theme, most His World remixes tried to do something different (Victory jingle on the Spanish Guitar, Orchestral Final Boss theme, Original instrumental theme, etc). It is a tad bit lazy to constantly remix a song over and over, but at least most of them sounded more unique from each other.

I think Sonic Colors, and to an extent Lost World handled the use of their orchestral theme songs better. Most of them were used very scarcely in game, and didn't try to shove it down your throat too much.

I don't think there is inherent laziness in remixing a song. I think a good theme has the capability of being remixed for different situations and contexts, at different rates and with different instrumentation. It gives an identity and foundation to the whole soundtrack. If anything, leitmotifs tend to be one of the hallmarks of really good incidental music, and you will probably find them in your favorite film soundtracks should you choose to listen for them. I personally find it fun to do that; you know how much it blew my mind that a lot of the shit in the Lion King's soundtrack is nothing but the same two or three themes remixed and recomposed? And it's still freaking awesome.

Recurring pieces of music aren't the problem. Boring orchestration is, which is what this series has been outfit with for awhile in regards to themes. And Unleashed is not the only offender either. =/
