Popular opinion I disagree with?

I don't think Ken Penders was a terrible writer or that his time on StH was completely awful.

On the contrary, I think Penders was very good for the comic back in the day, because he moved it away from the god-awful, AoStH style slapstick comedy of its early issues and made it a more intelligent, more serious book that didn't insult the intellect of its readers. He made the book more like SatAM, and I think that was good for StH back then. Also, while the KtE book did often feel like a soap opera, I did enjoy the expanded universe Penders created for Knuckles and the memorable characters he brought into the Archie Sonicverse. He helped craft a universe full of interesting people and places and if that wasn't the case, we wouldn't be so pissed at him for his lawsuit and the fallout from it.

Now, I don't think he was the greatest Sonic writer ever, mind you. I think Ian Flynn is a much better writer, and I also reckon StC's Nigel Kitching would have done a better job. But he did write stories that I enjoyed and it was, honestly, only when he came on board that I really started to get into StH. Up until that point, I found it a difficult book to read.

This of course in no way excuses his legal antics, which I think have proven him a colossal jerk and one who I hope no comics publisher is ever dumb enough to hire again, but I'll give credit where I think credit is due. And Penders did make the book one I not only could read, but one I actively wanted to.

Sonic Unleashed was fun.

Not even having a giggle though. I found the first half of the game was a bit 'eh' due to the simplistic level design that some of y'all would describe as 'boost2win!!1! xDXD' but I felt the second half of the game was more enjoyable as the levels were more taxing.

Speaking of Unleashed, in most cases I preferred the Werehog stages to Daytime. Now before peeps get angry: I still the the "werehog" is conceptually stupid, the stages padded out with fight sequences and the awkward camera and shading which made it difficult to tell where you were in relation to that tiny platform suspended above a bottomless pit grew annoying at times. I just had more enjoyment out them; the platforming was more involved, do or die QTE's weren't present and the fighting segments weren't a massive chore that some people made them out to be. Bonus points for these stages for being consistent throughout the game too.

Unpopular opinions?

Classic Sonic is basically Dragon Ball Z. I totally don't mind this, and I've desperately wanted Sonic Team to pursue this. I totally love the idea of Sonic characters having ridiculous power levels and going Super and Hyper and beyond.

This is an opinion? I thought it was confirmed by Yuji Naka himself that Super/Hyper Sonic was inspired by DBZ.

So does this mean that Classic Sonic is also Star Wars because of the Death Egg?laugh.png

Unpopular opinions

Both Sonic Rivals games were underrated and are fun to play especially Rivals 2 with the battle mode features and multiplayer.

Tails doll is not even scary.

Mephiles The Dark is not much of a good villain, I know Metal Sonic was suppossed to be in 06 and I feel that he would have been a better villain than Mephiles.

Looking in the game data reveals unused notifications for announcing that a story and town missions for Metal Sonic (and every playable character, in fact) were unlocked. You can find them at the same place that discovered the unused rainbow gem and the like (Sonic Cult, I think it was?).

Huh, first time I'm hearing this. Alright.

Though if he was only going to be regulated to just town mission stuff and not be a part of the actual story, I can't see how he'd be better than Mephiles then.

Metal Sonic was supposed to be playable and with his own story in the game.

Trying to picture what actual purpose Metal Sonic would have in the story...besides being yet another problem for Sonic to deal with in his story.

- The werehog stages are total crap and don't work in a sonic game

I am not a big fan of the werehog stages, however I think that, if done right, they could be in a sonic game (think of the variety of levels in SA2). The biggest problem with the werehog stages was the clunky platforming and unforgiving stages. The camera didn't always work well, and it was really annoying to fall to your death several times while trying to cross a thin beam that you can't even hang on in Empire city.

- Sonic X is  terrible show

I use to enjoy sonic x a lot. I watched the whole show in english, and then watched most of it in japanese with english captions (never finished but saw the much better ending with tails). The show isn't total garbage, but after rewatching it, It has lost a lot of its appeal. I much perfer satAM to sonic x, but sonic x did do some things right.

- The last good sonic game was sonic and knuckles, sonic never did a good 3d sonic game, etc.

I totally do NOT agree with this statment. I love sonic adventure 1 and 2 to death. I also enjoy sonic unleashed, colors, generations, heroes, riders, secret rings, and several others. Now I will admit that I love the 2d sonic games a lot (great music, level design, bosses, difficulty) the new games still are fun, and in some cases (sonic adventure 1 and 2) actually have a decent "more mature" story.

So does this mean that Classic Sonic is also Star Wars because of the Death Egg?laugh.png

I think that they must of had some inspiration from Star Wars, I mean Square got tons of inspiration for their early games for Final Fantasy, so it wouldn't be too surprising !

There's no way that they didn't watch the Star Wars movies and got some inspiration.

Well yeah, the Death Egg being a homage to Star Wars is really obvious. But what I was trying to say in that question was how does having the characters being able to turn Super make Classic Sonic basically Dragon Ball Z? These games have taken inspiration from many other works, so how come being able to turn Super the main point of inspiration of it all?

I've never watched DBZ, but as I understand it, there are seven Dragon Balls, just like there are seven Chaos Emeralds, and together they allow the main character to transform into a golden hair super form, just like Super Sonic. There may be more to it than that, but that's my basic understanding of it.

The seven Dragon Balls were used to grant a single wish for the one who collected them all. Not really for the user to go Super Saiyan.

Yup. Sonic and DBZ's similarities are superficial, with only a few specific shout outs. Super Sonic is based on the appearance of the Super Saiyans, though the way both forms are attained are completely different. The Sonic 3 special zones are based on Kaio's planet and Silver was loosely modeled off of Trunks in his initial appearance (according to the leaked script). I love both series, but the mindset that Sonic is a furry DBZ is something that needs to be stamped out. People took a couple homages and then applied their own fanon and passed it off as fact for too long for my taste.

Moderately unpopular opinion (I think):

Has anyone noticed how unoriginal Sonic Team are becoming when it comes to naming levels? Half of them, like 'Sky Road', 'Sky Fortress' and 'Windy Hill' are blatant partial (and sometimes full in Sky Road's case) rehashes of previous level names whilst others like 'White Park' and 'Casino Street' are just boring.

Admittedly, this is horribly shallow, nitpicky and doesn't really have any bearing at all on my experience with Sonic games, but c'mon; what happened to names like 'Hydrocity', 'Sandopolis' and even bloody 'Eggmanland'? tongue.png

"Green Hill, Emerald Hill, Casino Night, Carnival Night, Secret Base, Plant Kingdom, etc" None of these were ever original, they just sounded "Cool or more appealing"...I guess.

But they didn't spend all 80 of those episodes making grunt noises to power up their grunt noise-powered balloon.
