Popular and unpopular Sonic opinions you agree and disagree with!

Recommended Posts

Popular:

The Classic era had the most consistent quality in the series.

Blaze is my favourite female character in the series.

Unpopular:

I like the American soundtrack for Sonic CD.

Sonic Adventure 2 is a bit shite IMO.

More opinions from me.

Popular:

Sonic Free Riders is complete crap.

I wish Sega and Sonic Team would just let Sonic 2006 die, rather than keep turning back to it for inspiration.

Unpopular:

Sonic Lost World may be flawed, but there are things I like about it.

I prefer Mecha Sonic over Metal Sonic.

Not sure if this is popular, but here goes.

While (from what I remember) the Boost games have it to a lesser extent than the Classic (and GBA ) games, I feel the Adventure trilogy didn't really click with me in regards to how bosses handled.

In this case, while the two of the Boosts had repeating bosses in later stages, they changed them up a little, as to throw you off. Just like how the Classic and GBA games make you have to approach bosses differently, depending on your character. As we all know, many Knuckles bosses were tweaked versions of Sonic and Tails' sets in S3&K.

What didn't work with me with the Adventure trilogy  is that for a game with "everyone's side of the story", some fights seemed to be very cut & paste on each side. In SA2, when five out of eight bosses on both sides are character fights that can be a mirror of the other and another are security robots that are the same, it shows lack of variety on both sides. To be fair, I guess it makes sense for Iblis 2 and Chaos 4, as multiple people were dealing with them, at the same time. Having Sonic and Shadow both have to fight Egg Cerberus seemed too "cloney" from what I remember. I guess their respective fights with Silver weren't as bad, as you had to use your surroundings accordingly. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the how SA2 handled "clones" was overdone and a bad kind of repetition.

I think Heroes did this better, as while you fight many similar foes, each team is distinct.

I think this happened in Shadow, but it's been so long that I can't remember.

Haven't played Lost World or later, so I can't comment on those.

Popular I disagree with: Sonic is a kids franchise. What kinds of marketing in the past couple of years has actually led people to believe this is the case? If anything they market way more towards people who are already Sonic fans due to how much nostalgia is in most of the newer games.

Unpopular agree with: Sonic Adventure 2 is not a good game.

Meh.....

-Sonic Mania is not that "good" of a game, i am convinced that Taxman payed a large sum of money to each critic that reviewed it. just to ensure a high ranking on review aggregators. (Gamerankings, Opencritic. Metacritic) now, i am not good at elaborating while using a keyboard. but for example. if the game was really all that good, then it would have had a high broadcast count and high viewership on Twitch during the time it was released. did it? not really, and like that it just faded away on twitch. you think a game with that much hype behind it, it would have been sharing the same spot that PUBG (which i don't fff-ing care about btw) occupies.

Now i am not necessarily saying Mania is a bad game (but at same time, i'm saying it's not that good) and me saying it wasn't popular on Twitch doesn't classify it as bad. what i'm saying is, people came off as Mania as some important or some special milestone,

keyword: Important/Special.

what i'm saying is: Mania is not that Important or Special of an game, you can use complicated rebuttals about you're view on the series all you want, but ask yourself this. are you still going to be playing Mania in five years? is the novelty still going to be with it when you played something else between the time period Mania came out  and five years where you're possibly playing the next big hyped game?

Related to Mania (but not that this time), I don't think Eggette/Ohmlette/Scramble/Whoyoucallingeggheadeggface works for Eggman in the way people are proposing.

There's a key difference between how Eggman and Bowser operate.

-Eggman is proud of his creations, but he doesn't really seem to view them with much compassion (even Metal Sonic, regardless of what the comic might have tried to imply...I'm actually not sure, I'd have to go back and check), so ultimately he doesn't form emotional bonds with his minions. This has been consistent throughout his entire run, even in alternate media where he had flesh and blood sidekicks (Grimer and Snively, the latter not being spared even as a nephew).

-Bowser Jr was part of a series of moves to humanise Bowser in the games* and change up his dynamic. So he went from fearful and uncaring tyrant who minions would betray at the drop of a hat, to a compassionate and loving father (which they didn't ever show when the Koopalings were supposed to be his kids) with a crush who garners respect and loyalty (as well as fear) from his troops. In a sense, Bowser Jr is a tool to show off Bowser, something which has only recently come to be appreciated given how much hate he got when he debuted.

I think my point is that the Sonic games don't seem to have any intention of doing similar for Eggman, so adding in Upside-Down Girl would ultimately be fruitless as there wouldn't be a unique dynamic between Eggman and her.

*Bowser's crush on Peach has been a thing in other Japanese media since the 80's.

I mean, Eggman being apathetic toward Eggette would lead to a unique dynamic on it's own. You'd kind of want it to be different from Bowser Jr. Maybe she's just a genius fan who Eggman only uses when it's convenient.

A lot of people have been slamming Classic Sonic's music in Forces, but the only theme I actively dislike is the Green Hill theme. Casino Forest is good, Chemical Plant I remember being pretty sick, and the rest were just average.

This is an unpopular opinion, as I sense most haven't thought of it. Besides, it's kinda fitting for Thanksgiving.

I wish more people would spend less time whining about the NY cast and imagine how adorable it will be to have their kids have chats about how their mom/dad is on their team of characters.

"My dad has the strong Knuckles, so he's on my team." "My mommie has been Blaze, who makes fire. She's the best." "No, my daddy has been two Super Saiyans. My team can beat your team."

Austin Griffith is still a baby, so he can join in, in a few years. :)

Unpopular: Sonic Mania's stages are underwhelming for a good portion of the game, same with Sonic Generations in many instances(City Escape). You can clearly see how the team put far more work into their own creative stages rather than the old ones and I honestly dislike how the original stages are in the game rather all the stages basically being new. It hampers on Mania's Quality which is why I don't really compare it to the main classic titles at all.

Popular(?):

-Sega and TT wasted the perfect engine for a 3D Sonic game with Sonic R.

Unpopular(?):

-Sonic Unleashed, Secret Rings and Black Knight have the best art direction of the 3D Sonic games.

-Sonic the Fighters is pretty good and that low-poly aesthetic is really, really cool.

-Sonic Riders is (or was. It's practically dead nowadays:() the best Sonic spin-off after Sonic & All-Stars Racing and Sonic Free Riders could have been a great sequel to Zero Gravity if it wasn't a Kinect game.

-Sonic Team is still great...as a developer for Puyo Puyo games.

FYI, this post was in the Unpopular Opinions Thread but was moved here because it's Sonic-specific.

Unpopular: I think Espio's design could be improved if he had more of an overhang on his lip.

I'd draw it out myself to give an accurate idea, but this pic conveniently has a very similar thing to what I'm seeing in my head.

Pretty much like that, only with the regular art style. I think it'd differentiate his design more from other standard Sonic template characters, and lend more to his reptilian nature (since it's more like actual chameleons).

Those are like 3 different art styles though, so this doesn't add up.

In Video Games, Art Direction covers many things like character design, artwork, tones, themes, colors, illustrations, etc. What I meant to say was that Unleashed, Secret Rings and Black Knight have the best use of these elements: The themes of each game are executed very well (in an artistic sense), characters and enemies have cool designs, levels are beautiful, eye-catching, with many details and color combinations:
