The Assassin's Creed Topic - Vive les assassins! Vive la France!

Assassin's Creed isn't about to end up like Guitar Hero unless they make it a bi- or tri-annual affair, which isn't happening. I just hope that this far-ahead strategy works out well for the series, as it's one of my favorites from this past gen.

Aside from late 18th century Europe, which has enough fodder for at least two big AC games, I'd like to see the Roman Republic in its dying decades get the spotlight. It'd be great to visit Rome in its classical heyday, mingling with great characters like Sulla, Marius, Caesar, Cicero, Pompey etc, heading out of the city to participate in the Roman wars and inter-Roman civil wars. There could be a great intermingling of the Italian setting we're familiar with, and the big set-piece battle setting we got in AC3, perhaps including some ancient world naval gameplay involving Triremes and whatnot, as well as tree climbing, real cloak and dagger stealth gameplay. It holds huge potential.

In the space of a year I've gone from discovering and adoring AC to finding myself utterly sick of it. Nice going, Ubi.

Wow, kinda un believable they have THREE AC games in production in addition to Black Flag (which looks very good).

This could mean a few things.

They are working on a vita AC game that's a spin off of Black Flag (like Liberation was to AC III) or they are doing the expected thing and having a full-on next gen AC in production to take advatange of the new hardware of the PS4 and Xbone

I really hope if its the former, then the performance of the game on Vita is not like Liberation where it consitanly dips to low 20-25 fps.

Wait, that makes four AC games in development right now... Where did you hear/see this? Got a link? Or is it part of a story already linked to and I'm being dense?

AC4: Black Flag, AC 5 and AC Vita are all givens at this point. That makes one unaccounted for AC, if you're right. AC 3DS, maybe? AC Wii U?

AC Wii U would be AC 5; Ubi would make a special version of the game for the Wii U if the system sells more (same thing might apply with the Crew and the new Tom Clancy game).

I don't even know if the 3ds could even RUN a AC game if its a open world games (might be like the Batman game; 2.5D side-scroller with elements of the console games working with it).

My brother got AC3 on Wii U a couple of weeks back and I have to say, it may not have enough differences to be worth buying again but if you still haven't got it, get it on the Wii U if you can. I thought it played really well and the gamepad is too comfy!

Details on Assassin's Creed: The Board Game are light, but we do know it will be set in Assassin's Creed II-era Constantinople. Each player must complete various assassination contracts across the city, all while avoiding guards, gathering treasure, and generally tripping up fellow opponents. Assassin's Creed: The Board Game is developed by Arkham City Escape creator Cryptozoic with Ubisoft's blessing, although the publisher has yet to make an official announcement for the game.

So yeah, this is a thing that will exist in a few months.

Well I must say AC4 looks gorgeous and the open world gameplay is promising. I also like the idea that Way Points are now fast travel locations. And yet the idea of constantly have to using a massive ship to travel to different locations seems cumbersome (I never liked the ship gameplay in AC3).

Assassin's Creed 4 has a interactive trailer:

Assassin’s Creed 4 Jellyfish Trailer

assassins-creed-4-kenway1.jpg

Marketing has become much more interesting than it has in the past and game trailers are no different. Ubisoft has released an interactive trailer of Assassin’s Creed 4 on their website called Horizon.

How is it interactive you ask? The trailer can be paused at will by a click of the mouse and at certain points in the trailer, there are clickable Pirate Assassin Logo with the skull in it. When you click them, they pop up a little window with the “exclusive item” ranging from the classes of ships you will find on the sea, some pictures of some famous pirates such as Annie Bonny and Charles Vane who will undoubtedly feature in Assassin’s Creed 4.

You even get a glimpse at some 360 portraits of some crew members of the Jackdaw (Edward Kenway’s ship) to see the details of their faces and a panorama of a Mayan viewpoint courtesy of a short clip of Edward Kenway synchronizing.

It’s not just all exclusive items though, there is a trailer of Assassin’s Creed 4 to talk about! Within the actual trailer itself. You get a few more glimpses of Edward Kenway swimming underwater with manta rays and other sea life. There is also a glimpse of the potential for what looks like Havana to be a proper urban sprawl similar to the Romes and Florences of older Assassin’s Creed games.

It also appears that the Assassin’s Creed 4 developers are sprucing up naval combat a bit more with some new ammunition types such as mortars and fire barrels (gleaned from one of the ‘exclusive items’). This trailer has now pretty much confirmed that we have our first dual wielding Assassin in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, guns and hidden blades not included.

Click here to take a look at the interactive trailer and see if you can find all 13 of the “exclusive items” in the trailer.

Hints: The first item appears roughly at the end of the quote in black and white and the last one is found near the end as you get a full side shot of the Jackdaw sailing across the screen. You will need need a smartphone to look at the last item.

Yeah I got an e-mail with a link to the interactive trailer (I am a member of U-Play). It's quite clever how it's done. Ubisoft are certainly trying very hard with their advertising campaign for AC4.

Ubisoft On Assassin’s Creed 4 Side Missions: “You’ll Never Feel Like These Activities Are Superfluous

One of the biggest criticisms against Assassin’s Creed III, if you don’t count the numerous bugs, boring campaign, disappointing ending and a humdrum protagonist, was the utter uselessness of the side missions in the long run. Fortunately, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag creative director Jean Guesdon has revealed that this won’t be the case for the next game.

“We have a huge Caribbean open-world that is full of activities and side-missions. We have forts to raid, shipwrecks to discover, smuggler caves to infiltrate, ally ships to escort, trade routes to disrupt, animals to hunt, collectibles to find, etc.

“The key thing here is that all of these activities make sense in the context of the open-world—you will never feel like any of these activities are superfluous, they are all present for a reason, and they are all fun to complete. You are completing these activities to become a stronger pirate and a better assassin.”

Guesdon also revealed that in terms of control mechanics, “The combat plays very similarly to AC3’s combat, but those extra additions that you mentioned really take it to a whole new level. The multi-pistols mechanic enables you to shoot any enemy mid-combo, so it gives a whole new dimension to how you approach a combat situation. Free-aim enables you to pick off some enemies before the fight even starts, which also helps a lot.”

13 Minutes of Caribbean Open-World Gameplay | Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag [North America]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICemupWG56U

An extended version of the previous trailer where the game's action-stealth techniques, naval combat and treasure hunting mechanics are all shown off, in addition to the sea's deadly storms and the British's inability to do anything other than be ruthlessly murdered by the same bloodline. We also learn that Kenway's ship is manned by the happiest group of pirates ever featured in a gritty, realistic setting, and that treasure chests are buried in no more than two or three inches of topsoil.

Y'know I gotta say, even though AC3 was pretty mediocre, it seems Ubisoft is really improving the formula quite a bit in this game.

I'm not getting too excited though. AC3 burned me pretty bad.

Assassin's Creed 4: Discovery Mode and co-op footage

The first footage of Assassin's Creed 4's co-op modes, Discovery and Unleashed, have been revealed as an enhanced version of Assassin Creed 3's Wolfpack co-op mode.

As detailed by VG24/7, Discovery is the most major addition as it's a story-based mini-campaign that teaches players the ropes of co-op. It's available for up to four players.

Once players acclimate to that, there's Unleashed mode, which tasks players with working together to guard chests, eliminate disguised foes, pull off synchronised kills, and kill "infected" enemies that can only be harmed once you've retrieved a package.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZI1zm8OhM0

Assassin's Creed 4 will also have a Gamelab mode where players can tweak the parameters of the multiplayer to make a mode that's pistols-only or disables the scores for everything save killing.

Sadly, what Assassin's Creed won't have in multiplayer is naval warfare. Lead multiplayer game designer Tim Browne told VG24/7 that combining these two would be "impossible," and that implementing it into single-player was already an arduous feat.

"You have to take into consideration that it took a very big dedicated team in Singapore about two-and-a-half years to do it for the solo [play]." said Browne. "We've looked at it and we've considered it. We seriously considered it. We think it would be cool, but at the same time we tried it, and for technical reasons it's impossible."

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – Aveline Returns

The star of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation will return to the series in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. Aveline de Grandpré will appear in a series of missions found exclusively in PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 copies of the game. Jill Murray, writer of Liberation, has also returned to pen the continuation of Aveline’s tale.

Aveline’s missions in Black Flag pick up a ways after her story in Liberation ends. “It’s a ways forward so Aveline is a bit older,” Lead Writer Darby McDevitt explains. “It’s not directly related to the end of her story. If Assassin’s Creed IV is like a novel, Aveline’s missions are like a short story.” Providing about an hour of exclusive content, Aveline’s narrative is broken up into three missions, according to Game Director Ashraf Ismail.

McDevitt explained during the San Diego Comic Con panel that these missions are made possible thanks to some of Abstergo’s Animus upgrades. Abstergo Entertainment has been digging through genetic memories of the Assassin’s, supposedly in the search for a good product. “The present-day is set in Abstergo Entertainment – which is this fun, hip company to work for… at first,” McDevitt says. “You are able to access the Aveline stuff because your coworkers are working on retrieving different genetic memories from all kinds of different people.” Of course, this being Abstergo, there’s something much darker at play.

So will the X360, PS3, and Wii U versions of the game look like shit graphically, or will they have good graphics?

Why would the graphics look like shit?

One of the strengths of the Assassin's Creed series, is how every game looks absolutely gorgeous with very impressive visuals. So the PS3 and X360 graphics for AC4 will look great (they certainly do based on the gameplay footage), and the Wii U should - in theory - surpass them. As for the PS4 version, who knows...

The question is not if it will look like shit, but will it run like shit?  The game looks really ambitious and with the dynamic ship battles, huge open world and the graphics looking much better than AC III, I have a hard time thinking that the game will run well at all on the PS3/360, or even the Wii U.

The PS4/X1/PC versions will look and run great though as thanks to the next gen systems raw horsepower, the game will run very will (maybe even at a rock solid 60 fps) on the new systems.

The PS3/360/Wii U versions will feature loading screens separating land gameplay from naval gameplay, while the next gen versions will feature seamless movement between the two.

Oh good, I was worried that they would pull a Watch Dogs on it.

I just got ACIII on Wii U today, and I love it. I've been lying in bed all afternoon, assassinating guards in off-TV mode.

Btw what's multiplayer in ACIII like? Can friends explore the open world with me?

Four new screenshots showing modern day Abstergo:

"You're working for Abstergo Entertainment, and you're using the Animus technology. You're a research analyst, and you don't know why, but you're told to research the life of this guy Edward Kenway."

It's easier for you to try out the multiplayer's tutorial stuff than for someone to explain it. But no, it's not co-op, it's a competitive thing where people are trying to sneak up on each other and assassinate them.

...Or at least it WOULD BE if people didn't just run around all over the place and treat it like a standard run & gun multiplayer.  >:I
