How would YOU rewrite the characters?

Shrek

Recommended Posts

My interpretations:

Sonic with Storybook personality and Colors humor; Tails both childish and smart; Knuckles somewhat gullible and a lot less stupid; Shadow unintentionally, occasionally being a comic relief; Rouge being more sophisticated; Silver and Charmy less annoying; Cream not having such a high-pitched voice; Eggman stays the same.

Pretty much what everyone else said.

Prepare for a lot of words.

Sonic

Basically how he is in the Storybook/Colors games, with a little twinge of STC'S piss-off Sonic.

Tails

More like Luigi, going off on his own adventures instead of being Sonic's shadow and also like the Archie Tails, having an intellect of both magic and technology.

Knuckles

Less like modern stupid-always-getting-duped Knuckles and more like classic trying-to-protect-the-emerald-at-no-matter-the-cost Knuckles.

Shadow

A ruthless mercenary of G.U.N., Shadow works with G.U.N. to fulfill his destiny: To prevent the Black Arms from coming back to Mobius. You may also see him in the Casino Night Bar.

Amy

Same as now, except the fangirl-ish stuff in toned down and she's trying to do what she said she would do in Sonic Adventure: Make Sonic respect her.

Eggman

A combination of Archie Sonic and Game Sonic. Ruthless and hammy at the same time.

That's all I have to say right now.

Shadow: Definitely would need to get him a voice like his debut voice again, since I think the voice often is a huge chunk of a character. As it stands his other two performers have portrayed him as too dark.

I'd put more emphasis on his role as a GUN agent. While he's more heroic than his original appearance, he's still rough around the edges, more serious than Sonic. Also should be emphasised that whereas Sonic would never take someone's life, Shadow has more of an "ends justify the means" mentality. This is the guy who would commit omnicide to satisfy his best friend's dying wish; the crazy lengths he'd go to to protect humanity should not be underestimated.

Silver: Ditch the time travel gimmick and have him locked in the past. Otherwise I think he's good how he is. Sonic's the upbeat, uncompromising hero, Shadow the serious and pragmatic one, and Silver the comically naive one.

Sonic: I'd like his personality to place some more emphasis on free will and free expression. For some flaws, I'd like him to be incredibly narrowminded about technology. So while he is a good guy, he can be just as bigoted as anyone else.

Honestly at this point, with all of the differing interpretations, I think the best thing is to take parts of all of character's personalities and traits over the years and make a composite to get the most possible. For instance.

Sonic: Give him the laid-back and easy going personality from the Adventure era, someone who doesn't sweat the big things in life and that classic 90's attitude that's mostly in Archie/Colors, someone who isn't afraid to talk trash simply because he knows how good he is and to troll his opponents but has the skill to back it up, but also someone who's mouth would get him into trouble just as much. Have him be somewhat obliviously irreverent to the feelings of others due to his narrow-minded nature, basically he may come off as a dick, but unintentionally so until it's pointed out to him at which point he would be genuinely sorry. And all of that other standard hero jazz that people prat on about.

It takes the best and worst of each continuity and makes something new out of it.

I wan't Sonic to be a little bit more cockier.

Tails can be like what he was in Colors.

Eggman can be comedic but can be a little more evil.

Knuckles can be more intelligent.

Amy can stop being annoying

Other than those guys I really don't care on how the other characters act.

I say we make Shadow a relatively harmless grump.

And the buttmonkey.

Yes. Perfect.

HMmm, guess I will give my 2 cents, though I think some fo the main guys are covered

Knuckles: Bit of a straightman, follows his duty, and keeps on the job, however does have a slight sense of humor at times, and is of course stubborn and hard headed. When it comes to his intelligence, he should be smarter than he seems in the past, the one thing the sonic chronicles got right is that when it comes to echidna lore, and possibly even the tech, he should know quite a bit, I mean you get stuck around ruins for years, you figure you would study some of them, not to mention sky sanctuary.

Rouge: honestly while we do still see her as a theif, we have also noticed that it has been a little overpressed that she works for GUN, just go ahead and have that be a good chunk of her priority, sure she might go after a gem here and there, but for some reason her as a goverment agent for some reason having to get on sonics tail seems like it might actualy be interesting

Big: Turn him into the sonic equivelent of a wookie, which he essentialy already is, I have a feeling that if you showed him taking down a squad of killer robots single handedly his cool factor would go up a bit.

Fang/Nack: Just go ahead and bring this guy back already, he has so much potential, and he seems to have a special conection to the Chaos emeralds. add to that, I have a feeling that he could be a real pain to sonic, and a good comedic foil while he is at it

Man, y'know...I just want Sonic to be a bit of a jerk? I've said it before but he's just...too nice. How did a character who was once known for his attitude end up so safe?

I mean come on, fuckin' thousands of hot blooded shonen protagonists out there, it's a cliche, it's kid's stuff, but it's still got more bite than Sonic's ever had. Can't we at least match that? Can we maybe at least come close? Close-ish?

This is partially why I prefer the Colors onward and Archie depictions. He's still a nice guy at heart, but mostly a snarky asshole to those around him and it just helps him be more complete as a character, especially when he gets called on it by the rest of the cast(I still love that scene in Colors).

Matter of fact yeah, Sonic being a snarky asshole should start causing some conflict with the cast; it's a good vehicle for him & Knuckles to butt heads combined with the latter's temper, an opportunity for some snark to snark combat with Shadow, and just generally being a dicks. Matter of fact, Sonic needs to be a troll.

I can't speak on Archie Sonic, but Colors, while it's better than average...it's still pretty weak. Yeah he's got some actual character, and he's not quite Mr Perfect...but it's slathered in groanworthy jokes and it's all still so nice, there's no bite, no anger, no rebelliousness, no attitude.

To be fair, there's hardly anyone else for him to interact with; Eggman kind of deserves it, and with Tails it's mostly back and forth. Outside of that tho, he really hasn't interacted with anyone else so it kind of leaves a limited range of emotions for him to have. If Sega weren't being such twats and actually utilized it's cast, I'm sure we'd get something interesting.

I can't speak on Archie Sonic,

Then I'll do it for you...if you don't mind.

Archie Sonic's character is, to put it frankly, the best characterization that matches what you're wanting for Game Sonic.

When you mess with Archie Sonic, he messes with you right back. When you hit him close to home, whether literally or figuratively, he gets pissed. When he gets excited over something, he tends to rush into the fray without much of a second thought, which sometimes backfires on him like when he tried to spin-dash into a Metal Knuckles and it dunked him out of the sky like he was a fly. He snarks every chance he can get, he was more than willing to rebel against the very government he was fighting on behalf of when he (rightly) felt they were being stupid, can slip up and be an arrogant fuck at times where it would be more than deserving of him to get punched in the face, while still being Sonic who will do the right thing despite his faults.

Of course, if you do end up reading them (and I know of site where you can do so if you want a PM) it'll depend on your tolerance of the comics if you would find the series in general interesting, minus the period where Penders when screwball over it than almost all of us agree was bad.

It's true that stripping the cast (and the story in general) isn't helping things, but what I'd like to see, it should be clear even in a stripped-down state. It's not just a matter of throwing a few rough lines at a deserving character, but an all-over sharpness and spikiness. Colors Sonic, whether he's talking to Tails or Eggman, he's still the same baby's-butt smooth. Even when he's supposed to be cocky or angry, the game's just too light and jokey to really sell it.

e: I mean, could we at least have had

actually happen?

Well, I have read a good chunk of them (i have a source), even some relatively recent stuff, but I don't really feel comfortable analyzing his character in it because...I just never could get myself to give a shit. I gave it an honest shot and tried to catch up to the recent stuff, but it never clicked, I was just going through it mechanically, so not only did I give up (so I'm not up to date with it) but I barely even remember most of what I read. I'm sure there's a number of reasons for that, and I will say that I don't think Sonic is as flat in them as the games, but I can't say I found him compelling, either.

I've always felt empathy towards young Christopher Thorndyke because no one more than I can feel the plight of being abhorred just because you happen to have billions of dollars.  If I could recreate Christopher, I would give him more of an attitude and the means to obliterate the world that has eschewed him.  Nothing commands respect (and fear) like someone who holds your life in his hands.  Let's see Mr. Eggman try to make fun of young Christopher now.

I'd like the characters to show some real emotion. Everyone is pretty standardized in how they react to things - as in they react the same way to everything. There has to be things that hit closer to home than others.

Honestly I'd rewrite Sonic to be a bit more of a Kamina type (and there goes the groans of a thousand internets already). Maybe not quite as loud, but on the surface he's this incredibly confident badass who does really cool stuff. But underneath all that is a bit of an insecurity and he has a bit of trouble keeping it wholly together when things get rough. He is too 'clean' as it is. Even when he fails the consequences are never really all that terrible, instead they are just minor annoyances to him. I'd like to see Sonic get totally crushed, humiliated, riled up. It'd add so much to his character just to see this "fake ego' he's built up as a shield to protect himself just totally torn down and smashed to pieces just to see how he'd react. He's got no major flaws and that's annoying to me.

I would change Tails to be less of an encyclopedia. Because really all he does is play a secondary tutorial-character type role next to Omochao in my opinion. He used to be a lot more interesting but again it falls under "I am smart, I made this, go use it Sonic here is how!" and that's it. I almost feel like as a sidekick he is completely useless to Sonic and really the way they try and sell 'em as being all brotherly comes across flat because there is never any meaningful interaction besides that. Not only that but I feel half the time Sonic could probably just do things faster without him around haha. I'd rather Tails be a lot more skiddish, not as confident, poor social skills in the sense that he is a huge geek who probably would spend a lot of time wrapped up in research than generally hanging out. I think he should be just a little socially awkward.

I'd change Knuckles. A lot. If anything I'd have him be a lot more like his OVA rendition because to me that's the ideal portrayal of him. A bit of a hothead, definitely rude to people, but still has a heart of gold. In a way he is a lot like Sonic in that movie but with enough differences to set him apart. Which to me is how it should be - I would prefer him taking back a more friendly rival type of role and be more or less Sonic's rival. Screw the other guys who can go fast, to me it is a lot more interesting to have a rival who doesn't exhibit the same exact skillsets as Sonic - with the exception of Metal Sonic as he is not really a 'rival' in my eyes and is more of the evil doppelganger. The biggest hurdle would be whether or not I'd get rid of the whole Master Emerald subplot being connected to him. I almost think I would and thus freeing his character up to a different path other than "last of my kind and I sit here on this rock all day". I'd rather him have a keen knowledge of relics and stuff, but of course that's really all he knows about - modern technology is lost on him as he is too busy delving into places of old to care about anything relevant. It'd lend plausibility to him knowing the most about the Master Emerald the most as some sort of sacred relic of legends. I think it'd be cool.

Eggman I'd keep the same. He's pretty wicked. Though I never get the sense that he is really leading up to anything. He builds all these elaborate things but I never feel like he is getting anywhere. Sure, Sonic always stops him, but it'd be cool if for once he'd have this master plan that perhaps would span a few games - something HUGE. I'd love to see him tackle something bigger than he's ever tackled before. All these defeats have to be frustrating - gotta aim big now Doc.

The rest I have no clue what I'd do with because while I loved a lot of the other characters as a teen, over the years they just haven't really stuck with me all that much and I'd rather go back to a smaller and much better developed cast. I dig quite a few of the designs, but their personalities are plain. This isn't to say the original trio doesn't have fairly plain personality types too, or that they have loads of depth, but when you have a lot of other characters playing the same roles that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were already playing - with similar personality traits forming once their initial debut game is over with and they appear in subsequent releases - it just gets stale. Everyone was fairly fresh in Sonic Adventure when that came out, I felt each character had a different sort of trope they were filling and while (again) its not like the writing was all that great, at least the characters were different from one another. Everything after that started to introduce characters and then totally try and develop them only to just strip them of their personalities and give them tweaked personalities of characters that were already there. At least that's just how I feel about it.

I hope I don't make a fool of myself by saying this! I'm darn-tootin' sick of being the butt of all the jokes...

Every time I've played as Shadow, (most notably in Sonic Advent 1 and his spinner game) I can't stop portraying him as an "outdoorsmen" in my mind. I've had many a quixotitic fantas--dream about that luciously patriotic hedgehog wearing only a flannel shirt (and nothing else, if you know what I mean) with a 12-gauge slung on his shoulder gleaning in the sunlight. I think he'd fit in ambitously in Alaska. Rhetorically, his spin-off game almost pantomimes this idea for me; he's so naturally obtuse with weapons of any kind - human or alium, it just boggles my mind!

Don't even get me started on Sonic '06, all the vehicles he has at his disposables; motorcycles, jeeps, buggies. I'd call you a liar if you said he wasn't a country boy at heart, that's for sure!

I never did think that honestly, most of the cast do more or less play the same roll as the original trio, just in different droves. I don't say that to make them seem lesser, but it does kind of bring a point how whitebread the personalities are.

Don Quix-WHO? A'course I don't want Shadow to be a anti-hero, I've been careened with enough of that since he was inducted into the series! I want him to be a wholesome, purify, American character and to be darn-tootin' truthful with ya, Americans have a gene against delusions so none of that squirrel fur, either!

Sonic - He's fine

Tails - Out of all the personalities he should have, I'd have the smart ones from Unleashed and Colours. He'd be useful in a way lot more games.

Knuckles - keep him like he is, but more smart

Amy - SA1 personality, try and get respect from Sonic

Big - GIVE HIM THE PERSONALITY OF DUKE NUKEM. is only logic

Shadow - Burn the Amnesia plot line and everything will be fine.

I like Shadow being a GUN agent, infact, despite 06 bring rubbish on almost all counts, I think that this was one of the better things, not Shadows characterisation per se more his role in the world, I liked how he was now actually doing something that suits his character rather than "who am I ?" Again and again. Maybe make him slight comic relief, but maybe unintentionally so. In fact his next spin-off game could be Metal Gear Shadow :P

Rouge I think needs to be more sophisticated, she is a female spy, if you look at most of James Bond's female spies (friend or foe) they always seem to give off some sort of air of sophistication, they should focus more on the spy in her rather than the jewel theif (although I think it's about 60/40) for her priorities! Maybe that's her flaw, she gets distracted by some jewels or something on a mission?

I like the idea of eggman having a big plot that spans several games, maybe like a lock on feature? If you have a same file for a certain two or three games you get the "true ending" which shows you what each of those other plots had to do with the big one, obvioi

Like I said, the games are too oversimplified and lighthearted to believably do that. I'll admit tho, Sonic is sometimes too nice for his own good despite his "attitude" playing a large part in his overall success, whether it's American born or not.

I really want Knuckles to be taken seriously again, he's just such a fucking meathead now. People will say "Oh well he's funny now" No, no he's not, he's pathetic and whenever something bad does happen to him nowadays, I roll my eyes rather than laugh. And I know the only reason they're treating him like this is because they have no idea what the fuck to do with him. I'm not saying he can't be bumbling, or fallible but for fuck's sake the manuals still try to sell that he's Sonic's "Rival & Friend" despite the actual games either ignoring him, treating him like crap, or he's just another tagalong to Sonic whenever he does show up. Hell, his strength is all but gone as it's hardly of any kind of use.

Can we just have him hit things again, I don't even care about the Master Emerald at this point, I just want Knuckles to do something to show that he's still actually effin strong.
