Which Sonic Game has the best soundtrack?

Chaos Incarnate

Recommended Posts

Is it just me who loves Sonic advanced 3's soundtrack? I love how it had Sonic 3's music design or having a variation of the levels main "Theme" for every stage, and the variation keeps me entertained over the 3 acts. Also, I love sunset hill's Sonic 1 green hill zone remix so much.

Maaaaan, Sonic Advance 3! I know the game isn't too highly received, but I still stand by it having the best music in all of the Advance series. I used to listen to the sound test all the time. Cyber Track is one of the catchiest themes ever and Sunset Hill is still my favorite Green Hill remake. Yup, Sunset Hill of all things!

...I'm still waiting on the Sonic Advance 3 remix album. Someone please do that!

I'd listen to that too much. I loved S3&K's sountracks, so I ended up listening to project chaos on my Ipod way to much, but if someone remixed advanced 3, that could be my favourite album if done to the standard of Chaos (And if it did happen, I hope it would have alot less piano songs on it, that bugged me about Chaos).

If I could recommend something, I would definitely give the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - Remix Album a listen over. The soundtrack was composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata, the same two responsible for the Sonic CD JPN Soundtrack. I can't get enough of it.

Hey John! I had no idea you had an account on this site! Anyway, congrats on the month of Sonic reviews. I'll definitely give this a listen on my ipod, since my computer's speakers aren't working. Holy crap, its by the composers from Sonic cd(japanese)? This has to be great.

Jeeze, there are a lot of people with such low amounts of posts in this topic! I feel old. ohmy.png

Anyway, my short and sweet answer would probably be Sonic Adventure 2. The songs to each stage were incredibly fitting, both with the stage environment and the respective character. Seriously, I love the "Go-get-'em Tailsiness" of Tails's stage songs. You know what I mean. Seriously, you listen to Mission Street and you just KNOW it's a Tails song.

And I can't pinpoint what it is, but Metal Harbor is the perfect song for Sonic escaping from prison. Maybe it's the horns. Gaaah I just love this song. It's my wake-up phone alarm.

My decision might also be swayed by my incredible nostalgia with everything to do with this game, however. SA2's music is just the most "Sonic" to me. I mean, 7-year-old Sapphire would spend hours in the sound test playing these songs and running around the house pretending to be Sonic. Not to get sappy, but these songs are just really close to me.

Just imagine little me running around my living room to this. Because yes, it happened very often.

Sonic CD deserves a mention though. With 2 completely different soundtracks and 3 variations to each stage song, it's a freaking masterpiece. The Japanese Good Future songs are breathtakingly beautiful and happy.

Go ahead and tell me that isn't one of the most happy and beautiful pieces of Sonic music there is. Oh wait. You can't, because that would be a lie.

Also, some songs that I love that aren't from SA2 or CD are Rooftop Run, Night Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Open Your Heart, Starlight Zone, Windy Hill... you know what? Never mind. I could go on and on and on.

Let's make it is easily one of my favorite tracks from Sonic Adventure 2. The funky bass in the beginning gives me a Seinfield vibe, and the later parts of the song seem similar to metal harbor and It doesn't matter(SA2 rendition.) Although it's a fantastic way to start a game, it's a shame the song is a bit on the short side.

I'm just going to second this. I'm sure most of us have heard this album, but if you haven't please do! "Dr. Gigglymen" was happens to be my favorite song on the album and it's flat out amazing! Not only is it refreshingly funky, but it's a cohesive mix of a NUMBER of songs. Final Fever, Metalic Madness, Stardust Speedway, and the boss theme are ALL present in this one track. It sounds like it would be way too many songs, but the way its done sounds really good!

My favorites are the US version of Sonic CD, Fighters, and Chaotix, possibly in that order.

Chaotix has a very unique sound for a Sonic game. Not all of its tracks are winners, but it doesn't skimp on making its arrangements sound incredibly powerful.

and
are probably my favorite themes. Take Off is a short character select song, but it sounds so overwhelming, it's kind of hard to describe. It's the sort of sound that I can't imagine finding anywhere else. Tachy Touch has the distinction of being my single favorite bonus theme in the franchise, due to how humble yet cheery it gets. Chaotix also happens to have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npu3rcDZftE.

Fighters just has a damn unique soundtrack period. I really don't know any other video game that sounds quite like it.

and
are my top picks. The South Island theme would make for a really strong first zone theme for a regular Sonic game; it draws you into the adventure at hand. Bean's theme is just hilarious. I don't know what it is but the song makes me laugh; it's like some really goofy superhero theme song. It's because of his Fighters theme that I never imagined Bean to be a bad guy like in Archie, he always struck me as just a really misguided good guy who causes more harm than good.

But above all, I consider the US soundtrack for Sonic CD to be in a league of its own among the rest. Its atmospheric take on the levels sends chills down my spines and it ups the ante on how surreal zone music can get in the Sonic series, which I think matches the zone visuals perfectly. The Special Stage music is a classic, and all of the Collision Chaos and Stardust Speedway themes are just perfect. The Metallic Madness music is so chill in comparison to my expectations of a bombastic final level theme that it genuinely makes me dread what's to come after. Both versions of Sonic Boom are my favorite vocal themes in the series, and I normally don't feel strongly for the majority of Sonic vocal songs. I find them to be a perfect fit for the anime sequences - they have that "western outlaw" tinge to them that complements the anime's tanned, barren landscape so damn well. I have absolutely no qualms with this soundtrack; it seems like every song hits just the right notes for me at certain times, even if I'm not always in the mood to listen to certain songs over others.

The irony though is that my favorite song from Sonic CD (and the entire series, straight out) is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDbBMh71J38, so even though it's not from the US soundtrack, I think it's worthy enough to point out here as being a masterpiece of a level theme that sadly is undermined by just how shitty the actual zone is, and the fact that you'd have to go out of your way to hear it in-game.

Although I don't enjoy the Sonic Cd U.S soundtrack as much as the Japanese soundtrack, I can still see where you're coming from. The American version takes itself a bit more seriously, which makes the soundtrack very hit and miss for me. American relied on guitars and atmospheric pieces, which did fit some levels, but was a bit over used. However, I still prefer American palm tree panic and tidal tempest, along with Sonic boom over Cosmic Eternity. I also really enjoy Stardust Speedway, but Japanese still wins. The American soundtrack is incredibly under rated overall, but still doesn't beat the Japanese soundtrack.

I see barely any love for Unleashed's soundtrack.

I really love the feel of the soundtrack, it adds the most to the atmosphere of the game. The day stages are more upbeat and really does make you feel pumped to even play the stage. Its highly energetic and really fits in the stage.

However the night stages are my favorite songs in Sonic stages. They're the most atmospheric of the two. They have a more of a jazz theme going on and while it does make it sound like night where we got a bunch of monsters bumping in the night it does also feels rather energetic as well. Sometimes it even feels like a cool spy movie. Its really fitting. And one of my personal favorites of the soundtrack is...

DAT CELLO! For once a cello is featured in a Sonic game, a gaming series that has used everything but cellos.

But the soundtrack blends with the stages well and its incredible how much work went into this. I really hold this soundtrack with high regard. And great now you guys got me listening to Sonic now. D:

Unleashed features one of the best soundtracks, but is largely overshadowed by the adventure 1 and Cd, in my opinion. I also enjoy the night music, but it's a shame you hardly ever hear it, since that damn werehog battle theme never shuts up. Cool edge, windmille isle, rooftop run, and dragon road are my favorite day pieces, and the song "always", which is a beautiful orchestral melodic piece, is an extremely memorable cutscene song.

Unleashed soundtrack is probably one of my favorites, everywhere (well not everywhere because that werehog battle music just got tedious) ranging from the levels or even to the hubs or the cutscene music were just brilliant. I thought Unleashed made use of some excellent instruments and sound, Jungle Joyride Night with all its saxaphone glory is a perfect example. We also have songs very fitting to the locale of each stages, such as Holoska Night Hub, which is a calm, relaxing melody in a nice, cozy setting. The song itself is filled with an amazing tone that has honestly gone on to be one of my favorite non-vocal Sonic songs ever. Furthermore, we also have more bright and cheery songs such as the famous Rooftop Run Day or Cool Edge day, both rocking that guitar in a bright, cheery level. The energy in both of these songs are brilliant and overall add to the feeling you get while running through the buildings of Rooftop Run and the slopes of Cool Edge. And we also have the cutscene music. Combined with the excellent visuals and the fantastic animation of Sonic Unleashed, the music truly adds to the atmosphere, especially in the cutscene at Adabat Night, before the confrontation with Eggman. There's a brilliant piano and then later a mix of the World Map theme, and it just integrates itself into the cutscene very well.

Songs referenced:

Jungle Joyride Night

Holoska Hub World Night

Rooftop Run Day

Cool Edge Day

Sonic and Chip at Adabat Night (2:46 - 5:56; World Map mix begins at 5:15)

With all the scrutiny the Sonic franchise has gone through, the one good thing that has always been around is the awesome music.

I am sure that there are more memorable tunes in gaming than any Sonic tracks out there (SMB Theme, Tetris, Zelda, Final Fantasy), but I don't believe that there is a more powerful soundtrack collection in the gaming world and I don't think there ever will be another like it.

I would say that perhaps Zelda is the second greatest, but the problem with Zelda music (and Nintendo music for that matter) is the lack of overall originality. Once they get the catchy tunes stuck into people's heads, they just remix here, change the arrangement there, add X instrument, take Y off...

In some ways, I feel like Sonic's music path has taken the Beatles in terms of how many places it has gone to (electronic, pop, hip-hop, rock, jazz, orchestral and more). I look forward to more in the future.

I really like music from Sonic Adventure 2, mainly because it's most guitar rock and this is just my kind of music. I also like few tracks from CD (JAP) and Generations remixes are pretty good. Every game has it's own unique tracks, but SA2 wins me with Metal Harbor, Green Forest, Escape From the City, Pumpkin Hill and Live and Learn smile.png

I love sonic music so I will be listing my favorite soundtracks by era ala Sonic Generations.

Classic Era

Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Favorite Song: Flying Battery Zone)

Sonic 3 and Knuckles has a very exciting soundtrack. This is also one of the first sonic soundtracks that uses different music for different acts (probobly wrong about this). While some tracks both act 1 and act 2 sound similar (See Ice Cap Zone) some acts sound very different (see Lava Reef/Hidden Palace). It also has nice multiplayer tracks. Also great data select theme (Which was reused in Sonic Rush Adventure)

Honorable Mentions: Sonic CD, Sonic The Fighters

Dreamcast Era

Sonic Adventure 2 (Favorite Song: Metal Harbor, Favorite Vocal Theme: Sonic's Theme, It Doesn't Matter)

This was one of the first sonic games I actually owned (Well the Battle version of it.). While not all of the songs I like (Most of Knuckle's level themes have silly lyrics) the other songs sound good. It's interesting to not that each group of stage songs sound different. The speed characters (Sonic and Shadow) have song that are very fast paced and rock like. The mech characters (Eggman and Tails) have songs that while they are slower make you feel like destroying things. Finally the hunter characters (Rouge and Knuckles) both have different song styles that are more close to them.

Honorable Mentions: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advanced 2

Modern Era

Sonic Rush (Favorite Song: Huge Crisis - Jeh Jeh Rock)

One of my other favorite Sega soundtracks is both of the jet set/grind games. As some people know the guy that wrote some of the songs for jet set/grind did the soundtrack. For some reason I like listening to electronic music that use samples, that is why I like this soundtrack. I like all of the music on this soundtrack, even the boss music (Metal Scratchin')

Honorable Mentions: Sonic 06 (awful game, good soundtrack), Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Unleashed (Half of a good game), Sonic Colors/Colours, Sonic Generations

Despite me disliking the game greatly, I absolutely loved Unleashed's soundtrack more than any other soundtrack in this series. It's fresh getting a 3D Sonic title, without the usual, generic(maybe) rock music, and instead we get themes more fitting to the location that you're in. There's not a Sonic game, in which music adds to the atmosphere more than Sonic Unleashed IMO.

The orchestrated music is what stands out to me and I would love for more orchestrated pieces to appear in future games, even if it appears that they are used in MANY games today.

This is a hard topic due to the fact that every game had a different unique music style and feel than the others. Some of my personal favorites are Sonic CD Jap / Euro Soundtrack, Sonic The Hedgehog  2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Hard choice. Every new soundtrack they release adds more awesome tracks to listen on my iPod every now and then. I guess it'll have to be Sonic Adventure 2

Even though I love multiple soundtracks, like most Sonic fans do, I always have myself listening to Sonic 06, Sonic Adventure 2, or any of the handheld games' soundtracks the most. Sonic 06's only saving grace was the music, SA2's soundtrack is incredibly nostalgic for me to listen to and its tunes are always great to listen to, and I love how the handheld games always pushed their respective console's sound board to the limit, with Sonic Advance 3 really pushing it. Never knew you could get that kind of sound at all when I first played it.

Sonic the Fighters has one of the best soundtracks of the not-so main line of the sonic series, but in terms of the context of the game, itself, the soundtrack is simply brilliant. Seriously, every single track in this game literally 'pumps you up' and does a very good job of creating a true adrenaline-pumping fight sequence type atmosphere, on top of being some of the catchiest tunes Sonic has ever had the privilege of being affiliated with.

It saddens me how hated Sonic R's soundtrack is. It's nowhere near my favorite Sonic soundtracks, and isn't the most fitting for a racing game, but the songs themselves are of very high quality, in my opinion. T.j Davis has one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever heard, and the feel good lyrics always put me in a better mood. Super Sonic racing and You're my number one will never leave my head, no matter what!

This is about how I feel about Sonic CD's US soundtrack.

Don't worry, US OST, I still love you. ;_;

I'd say with confidence that Sonic Chronicles has the best soundtrack. Some of the tracks were out of tune, and did have a weird feel to them at times (Mystic Ruins), but ultimately I liked them. Not too sure if Bioware just pulled fan remixes for the music or if they just made the music last minute, but whether they did this or not I find the music to be incredibly enjoyable. Music like Blue Ridge Zone and Metropolis had a melancholy feel to them and it fit the theme of the game perfectly.

Some find the OST to be horrid, but I personally really like it.

The only ones that are passable are Metropolis blue ridge and one of the battle themes.

the rest like central city just rapes my ears.

Wow this is a......fresh opinion.  I disagree with it to the moon and would say with confidence that Chronicles' OST is one of (if not THE) worst in the entire series of notable games.  I find very little salvageable out of that soundtrack and would go so far to say that a number of the pieces actually hurt my ears.  Doesn't help that the sound direction for that game in general was terrible.

As for which Sonic game has the best soundtrack?  Sonic 2.

Outstanding soundtrack.  Every single track in that game is a gem.  It's a real step up from Sonic 1's OST (which in itself was amazing) as I feel it covers a greater range of genres than the previous game and each track does an amazing job of helping to craft a fitting atmosphere for each zone.  And the fact that they were able to do this all with the rather primitive Mega Drive soundboard is quite incredible.  Each track in this game for me as a player really helps to invoke something within me.  Invoke a sense of excitement, joy or tension depending on the zone.  I absolutely love it.  Lots of people say S3&K's is better.  I'd disagree for two main notable reasons.  First being that S3&K has tracks that I actively dislike.  Tracks that don't really do anything for me in terms of crafting an atmosphere.  Sandopolis and Lava Reef come immediately to mind.  Oh and Carnival Night is ear rape.  Second is that the tracks just don't invoke the same kind of emotions as Sonic 2's.  Some tracks do a really excellent job.  Blue Spheres (pretty much the only thing I really like about the special stage is the music), Flying Battery, Ice Cap, Marble Garden and Launch Base are all amazing tracks, but the rest to me range from good to kinda bleh.

Shoutouts also go to Sonic 1, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours and Sonic Rush.
