HD collections

The only reason I bought Star Fox 64 3D though was because I don't own an N64. I don't have any interest in, say, the Mario remakes on the GBA, even with the improvements they have.

Well I admit when I think Nintendo remakes I tend to think of Ocarina of Time 3DS, which was a complete reskin and thus is enormously improved graphically. That's the kind of stuff I like to see when I think of HD ports... when I was in the crowd when SA2HD was announced I was enthused naturally, only to find out it's just a reskin with a few small cosmetic changes. Naturally was a tad disappointing.

But I digress. HD collections are invaluable to me primarily because they allow me to more easily acquire games that I missed growing up; I've bought up tons of PS2 titles via HD collections (Ratchet and Sly Cooper in particular) than if I had to scrounge around for the PS2 originals. I just wish HD collections had a bit more effort put into them; I never really noticed a difference between remakes and originals if the actual models aren't updated.

I think I prefer ports to be authentic to the original game if possible (or at least have there be one port out of however any there are like that). Gives me a greater sense of playing it as if it had come out whenever.

Metroid: Zero Mission is one of the best examples of a HD Remake; Graphically remake and rebuild the game from the ground up, adding mini-bosses along with the original bosses and adding an extension to the main story, especially one that changes up the game for a while :D

Also, I was continuing my Nightmare playthrough of Doom 3, got to the lost mission. For those that don't know, the Lost Mission was a Campaign Expansion made for the BFG Edition release, apparently cancled before the game was released but considered a lot funner than Doom 3 itself if a little short.

Well while playing through it on Nightmare, I noticed a lot more than first time. The graphics were said to have been updated, playing the main campaign and Resurrection of Evil expansion, it never looked any different, just the brightness turned up slightly, but in the Lost Mission expansion, the graphics are noticeably a touch or two better! With better lighting effects to boot. I also noticed the weapons were slightly more powerful. Enemy animations were slightly improved, more so with the Imps. Levels were shorter and lower difficulties could probably be sped through, classic Doom-like. Better variation in enemies and better pacing.

This isn't so much in HD and it might count as a collection in a sense but my favorite HD (I guess?) remake of a game would be Megaman battle network 5 Double team DS. Not only do the games have brighter color's compared to the original but unlike most of the collections these days they added in some pretty cool features in the game that weren't in the original like the GBA portings, the playable team members outside of liberation missions, Bass/Sol cross are usable, remixed music and lots of other things added in too.

Ah, good times, good times! Jak & Daxter is the series that gave me my immense fear of water and sharks in video games (joke was on me when I had to swim through a whole area full of them in Ty the Tasmanian Tiger)... Jak's actually pretty good at giving one aquaphobia, given the myriad of abominations they litter the deep waters with as the game progresses. The instant tentacle death of Jak 3 bears mentioning for this specifically.

Jak 2 really was a pleasure, showing you can take a lighthearted series, make it dark and edgy, and keep it bucket loads of fun. ...and then they had that whack a mole game near the end of it... angry.png

totally get what you mean, falling in any water in the Jak series means an  instant heart attack.

I'm on the mission where you have to escort the three guys through the sewer. I knew it was coming...I dreaded it...and now I'm there.....I'll have you know I only screamed at the tv for three hours...

Oh yeah I remember that mission and to think it isn't even on hero mode yet.

The sewers weren't that bad! Well, barring those crocodile-like enemies, but they're not instant death so much as a nuisance...

...was still bloody terrified of falling in the water with them though. Best cheap scare was the sewers where that Metal Head lunges at you through the sewer pipe. Well played, Naughty Dog, well played. Originally Jak 3's sewers had a shark in them based on clips from IGN, but it looks like it was cut.

Worst is the Lurker Shark because you know it's coming yet are helpless. At least the octopus has the dignity to kill you instantly. Sometimes by punching you it looks like... what?

Most of the sewer missions are fine but not the escort mission, especially seeing as they have heart attacks if you get too far ahead of them :P

It's also the mission that kickstarts a series of ragequit missions so it's horrible just for that
