Paraxade0 is a madman and a genius. Firstly he's mad for spending so much time with 06, and secondly he's a genius for the insane shit he pulls off in this game. I've seen this video before but it never ceases to amaze me.

I like how even speed runs can't hide how clunky this game is, though.

Sounds more like I've bared witness to the game.

Allow me to list a few matters:

  • Rubbish compression techniques that resulted in the need for frequent and lengthy loading. This was actually as issue in early demos that was never rectified even in the slightest.
  • The fact that the director of the game and company stepped down mid-production.
  • It was blatantly unfinished, brimming with cut, unpolished and broken content.
  • The game took a vastly unpopular direction.
  • The Havok physics engine is incredibly powerful and versatile. '06 made it look like a horrible mess where objects would literally ricochet across the screen for no reason.

Other problems include the game being made by SoJ (sorry but they're far more imcompetent than SoA) and that Yuji Naka left after this abomination came out.

Actually, Naka left BEFORE the game was finished. Half of the problem was that he left and took all his staff with him (to create Prope) so who was left of the team was left limping towards the end result. It's little wonder that the game is so unfinished. Not that this justifies all the bad design choices (maybe some of the minor ones? The extent of which the design choices were affected is unknown if they were at all affected), but still.

I'll assume that when you say that it was developed by SoJ, you're referring to the original/main Sonic Team back in Japan. As for SoJ being more incompetent...eh, I dunno. SoA/Sega Studios/Sonic Team USA also brought us ShTH a year before 06.

Also Blue Blood did mention that Yuji Naka -who I assume he's referring to as as the director of the game and the company (Sonic Team)- left during development. To be precise, he stepped down shortly after the game was revealed via a trailer and a demo shown at TGS 2005.

Yeah, and despite how bad it was, ShTH was no where near as bad as 06 was. It was at least playable.

Point taken. That, and whatever concepts ShTH had, no matter how bad they were, were at least executed in a complete fashion.

06 didn't have that chance, as it's concepts were half-baked in execution or outright not included in the final product despite what it's manual said.

I always figured Sonic the hedgehog next gen would be a fan favorite  for speed runners such as Paraxade0 because of all the glitches and things you can exploit. Being able to use the sky gem without worrying about Sonic's power gauge dropping makes skipping parts of a level a piece of cake.

Man, I did not realize that there was so much animosity to this game before joining the Sonic community. It surprised me a bit. I always thought the most hated Sonic game among fans was Sonic Unleashed (One of my personal favorites) because people disliked the werehog levels (I love werehogwub.png ). For me the 2006 game was mehmellow.png . It wasn't my favorite sonic game but it also was not my least favorite. I liked playing as a variety of characters as well as Sonic. Its fun to glide through the air as Knuckles or use Silvers psychic abilities for instance. I also enjoyed being able to explore areas outside of the levels (like in the sonic adventure series). And as usual Sega did a great job with the music. I mean there are at least five different versions of Dreams of an absolution to this day, not counting the fan made versions.

Now, I hate to say this because I love Sonic so much. But despite the nice graphics, for some reason this game was rather forgettable to me. I cant really recall any levels or much of the plot for that matter. Except that one scene where Rouge vaguely hints at having feelings for Shadow. Usually each sonic game has at least one level that becomes your favorite, which makes each game unique. Like casinopolis in sonic heroes or rooftop run in sonic generations. And yet with Sonic 2006 everything is a blank to me.  Anyone else have Sonic amnesia when it comes to this game?

You think that run's cool? Here's Para doing Silver's story in under 1 hr 10 minutes and even doing the final story and "The Box".

I've never been able to complete this game. I played through Sonic's story and some of Silvers and Shadow's but then dropped the game. The frame drops became to much to handle. Half of the game played in slowmotion on my ps3. It really killed the game more then any of the other crappy parts about it. I can live with a horrible story line, forced romantics and this free roaming adventure fields where I always get lost in if the game would play smooth. But it played horrible.

I do like the in level switching to side characters even though they don't add anything to the plot. It's just fun to have at times a different character with a different style of play.

I agree with you. Even though it was cool to explore, some of the places were huge. And you never knew if you found every hidden thing or not. It should have been like Sonic unleashed, where you have the ability to play any level in an area automatically through the Start screen. Giving you the option to either explore an area or jump right into a level. I liked how Sonic generations was more direct in the exploration department. You can go left or right without getting lost, while also searching above the levels for hidden levels, items, and challenges. It was always clear to me when I had found all the hidden surprises with Sonic Generations which I appreciated.

I still don't know how to do the trick where you can get Silver to fly on a spherical object for as long as you want.

Maybe I'm landing the ground pound thing wrong.

Before this game came out I remember people were talking about how this was going to be THE Sonic game to bring the franchise back to life. Sadly, I have heard almost nothing but negatives about this game however. Being a big Sonic fan, like most of you, I still feel the need to play this game. Should I? Rating-wise, what would people give Sonic 06?

No, you should not buy this game. It is a really, really bad game, a complete waste of time, and a waste of money at any price. Instead, just do yourself a favor and just play the demo, watch some LP's of the game, and forget about it. You will most likely not like the game.

I think what it is is, you use his normal pick-up-objects telekinesis just as you're about to land on a thing. The game tries to pull it up to hover above you, but since you're standing on it you move up too.

I don't even have the game, though, so I might be way off.

Let me put it this way: if you want to find out why we're disappointed in this title, feel free to play for yourself.

Otherwise? You're better off playing Shadow the Hedgehog, and that's saying A LOT. Heck, there's your rating right there: it's worse than ShTH.

Haha I never even played Shadow the Hedgehog. One of my good friends told me to never get the game regardless of me being a huge Sonic fan boy.

But yes, all of the comments make sense. I am disappointed this game didn't produce the results it could have.

You know what? I think Sonic Next Gen has really nice levels. I like how open ended they are, I'd like to see more of that in a Sonic game. I guess some levels like Chemical Plant Modern, Speed Highway Modern and Planet Wisp Modern from Sonic Generations comes close to that.

Oh, I'd just get the game and ShtH, if you can find them cheaply/used (but not the PS2 one). To me, Shadow is basically Heroes without colorful graphics. It kinda gets to you the more you have to repeat certain stages for each of the story paths.

Gameplay-wise, Sonic 06 is just utterly unfinished, glitchy and frustrating. Along with horrible loading times and very boring town-missions that you have to complete before you can advance to the next stage. I actually found this the worst part of the game because there was a) way too much nothingness to explore and b.) it didn't make any sense storywise, as it did in SA1.

The level design in itself is OK and looks reasonably pretty. You can see they had a lot of good ideas that could have made for a really nice game. But maneuvering through the stages as it is might cost you a few controllers tongue.png.

You know, I would recommend that any curious Sonic who's aware of how bad this game is gives it a try. Don't go spending a lot of money on it or anything, but for a few quid you'll get cheap laughs out of it. I don't see any reason to tell people to avoid it, unless they're looking for a good game.

It is a good example of bile fascination, probably the best example of a Sonic game regarding this. '06 is so bad that I find that the best way to 'discover' how terrible it really is is to play it for yourself. Like Blue said though, I wouldn't spend much money on a copy if you have a 360/PS3 and it certain as hell ain't worth buying one of those consoles for.

I agree. When you were playing as Sonic in the normal levels there were quite a few paths to take. Two good examples of this are Dusty Desert and the first part of Kingdom Valley.

Wow. That cutscene was certainly a step-up from the previous two games. Reminds me of Unleashed cutscenes (which is a good thing), except this one was a little more action-oriented.

Wrong thread. Though you could say that about 06's CGI cutscenes, they looked much better than Heroes and StH's.
