Wasn't MCZ's 2P music the music for Hidden Palace in the beta, anyway? It would explain why they chose that track.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was the case, especially if the level was supposed to have a subterranean and prehistoric feel to it. Plus, even from beta screens and other uncovered beta elements, the level looked pretty fast paced.

 

But I guess we just don't know, I wonder if we ever will.

I've just completed a playthrough with Sonic alone. Really comfortable with the special stages now. Got all the emeralds in EH.

 

I'm now playing as Tails. I've been looking forward to this! Now that he can fly I can finally explore the levels to death. I have encountered a few glitches in Chemical Plant & Aquatic Ruin, but nothing particularly bad.

 

In Aquatic Ruin Act 2; I was flying with Tails right at the top of the screen. I got as far as I could and landed right next to the animal capsule. So I ended up skipping the boss entirely!

 

I am keeping my eye out for new routes like in Sonic 1. I think there is a mini-new route in Chemical Plant Act 1. I didn't find where it starts, only where it ends.

 

There is a massive new route in Hill Top Act 1. In the middle of the act where Sonic is normally forced to go underground, simply fly over the loops (which take you underground) and you will find a route built especially for Tails and Knuckles. I think this zone was a good choice because Hill Top was never a particularly exciting stage.

 

You get an extra life if you collect 300 rings just like in Sonic CD 2011, but not for 400 rings. Not that it matters much as there aren't 300 rings in any act in Sonic 2 (as far as I am aware). I got like 500+ rings in Casino Night's slot machines.

 

As for Hidden Palace: visually it's easily the prettiest looking zone in the game. The level design fits in beautifully with the other levels. It doesn't feel out of place. I like the tons of routes and how the paths often cross each other. The design of the new and beta badniks is neat.

 

I'm quite happy with them using the 2p Mystic Cave music for HP. It suits the feel of the level surprisingly well. Whilst I would have preferred them opting for the unused *10* music from the original game, that track is very repetitive. So after a while it would become annoying. At the very least they would have had to remix the track and reduce the repetition to make it more suitable.

HP gets 9/10 for me. StealthTax did an impressive job and I hope we get new levels in future mobile releases.

 

I love HP's boss fight. It feels very original, nothing like the other Sonic 2 bosses. Yeah it has a slight resemblance to Sonic 3's Hydro-city boss.

 

It's not the quickest boss and aligning the spike ball with Eggman can be tricky, although at least you can get in three or four hits before Eggman moves out of reach again.

 

Sonic 2 mobile is a lot of fun. I will be playing this version for a long time to come, at least until S3&K gets a mobile release.

I never cared too much for Sonic 2, but this is port is a damn good job. Replaying this has helped me realize how good the level design is in Sonic 2. As well as how hellish it is to get all the Chaos Emeralds (seriously, fuck the Special Stages...especially you Special Stage 6....)

And the way you reach Hidden Palace Zone, genius.

I was in Mystic Cave Zone 2 and thought "I wonder what they did with the pit..." thinking there would be a spring or something down there to help novice players get back up.


My jaw dropped when it transported me to Hidden Palace. Love shit like this.

Just kinda interesting that it's there. Since it's called "gauntlet" could just be an unused name for the Boss Rush (at least that's my take on it) but yea weird.

Its separate to Boss Attack so that's interesting. It would be awesome if they gave Stealth/Tax permission to do DLC for this and CD. Considering they are still doing DLC for ASRT I wouldn't say its too late to still consider trying for that. Still want to see their Desert Dazzle and boss for CD, if its anything like Hidden Palace it would be awesome!!

Oh my... this sounded amazing....

 

 

 

Basically during development, we tried something different for the Boss Attack mode. Instead of the original bosses back to back, they were all in the one zone with connecting platforming sections - the idea being that it was a testing facility, with mechanical palm trees, flashing lights etc etc. It was fairly close to completion (it just needed a few graphical effects, replacing placeholder graphics, and general polish), however Sonic Team didn't agree with changing the location, colours or graphic style for the Bosses.

So in the end we respected the wishes of the team and put together the Boss Attack you see today.

I got insanely lucky on the last one. I had plenty more rings than I needed to reach the Emerald, but on the last stretch of bombs Tails got hit three times, losing me thirty rings. I just managed to grab enough rings to pass with 210 rings exactly. But fuck yeah biggrin.png

 

Oh, I found a new path underneath Hill Top 1. It's designed for Knuckles, though Tails can also access it, and Sonic by proxy if Tails is following (though I don't recommend it!). It's right by the start of the stage, and hidden underneath and to the right of the end of the first hanging basket. You have to chance death to reach it.

Just finished Tails story.

I beat the Death Egg robot at my first attempt with Tails. First time I've done that on this version. The Wing Fortress boss is a piece of cake now that Tails can fly.

 

 

I have now completed playthroughs for all four character options.

Think I will try the boss rush mode.

 

The code for unlocking debug mode on the level select screen is the same as in the original game; 1.9.9.2.1.1.2.4 (the EU/NA release date of the original).

Great find!

 

It's a nice route. I like the placement of the extra life above the death pit, haha.

That means there are two new routes in Hill Top Act 1. How awesome is that!

 

I also found a new upper route in Chemical Plant Act 2 (as well as Act 1) which you can access near the end of the normal highest route (which avoids the water). Just keep flying/climbing and you will find it. There are loads of little hidden areas with extra lives and ring boxes in the new route.

Well, beat it with Sonic.

 

Death Egg Robot was a pain at first, but I found luring him to one side of the room, then spindashing and jumping at him during the spindash worked wonders - placed me just above his claws.

 

 

Also, Ashura is in the game...somewhat:
 

 

Aye, but that glitch was also in Sonic 1 IIRC - was dicking about with Super Sonic and the goggle monitor and debug mode when it happened.

This is probably a glitch, but all you need to do to get the Early Bird Special Achievement is get a Complete file with all 7 Emeralds and then choose Emerald Hill in the Complete file level select lmao.

 

I went on there intending to only get Quick Run, but as soon as I started it said I got Early Bird Special. So yep.
