I've just discovered that one port actually did add a spring to that infamous Mystic Cave spike pit. It it the low-end version of Sonic 2 J2ME port. Yeah, this one:

Explain more about this port?

Explain more about this port?

Sonic 2 was ported to mobile phones using J2ME around 2008. Due to game's size (or just someone's greediness) the game was split in two parts - Sonic 2: Dash and Sonic 2: Crash. There were two main variants of the port. The high-end one was meant for more powerful phones and is pretty accurate, the only things that it lacks are Special Stages, the ability to play as Tails and sound effects. In fact it would be a pretty good port if it wouldn't run at like 15 frames per second. D: Part One (Dash) features levels from Emerald Hill to Hill Top and Part Two (Crash) has the rest of them.

The low-end version was meant for weaker phones, featuring butchered graphics, no Tails, no bosses (except for the final boss which was butchered, too), no Chaos Emeralds to collect and each part has only three zones: Dash has Emerald Hill, Casino Night and Hill Top; Crash has Mystic Cave, Metropolis and Death Egg. Level design mostly remained the same in the low-end version but there are slight differencies.

You know, after comparing Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 Special Stages I can say that the former ones are worse. Because they're filled with THESE FUCKING BUMPERS which always throw you into FUCKING GOAL BLOCKS INSTANTLY ENDING THE STAGE! At least in Sonic 2 you don't get kicked out of SS if you touch a bomb!

Never heard of this version. Although upon searching I found this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kj9U036G4U

Also found this on Retro regarding a similar Sonic 1 version:

"Sonic the Hedgehog Mobile is a port of Sonic the Hedgehog to the J2ME mobile environment for use on mobile devices, available under the Sega Mobile banner. Depending on the service provider, the game is either provided as one full game or in two parts as Sonic the Hedgehog Part 1 and Sonic the Hedgehog Part 2. Part 1 only provides the first three levels of the game and Part 2 contains the final levels. The game is a port of the 2005 Sonic cafe game that was simply named Sonic the Heddeho.

There has also been a second, not as widely known version the game for Verizon phones, that has everything the original version did, although strangely removing all sound effects from the game. The mobile phone version also came bundled with some Panasonic cell phones in Europe and Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog Mobile closely mimics the Mega Drive version, but some features have been removed, most notably the Speical Stage. Enemies no longer release small animals when defeated. Graphics have also been resized and the palette of flowers in Green Hill Zone is different. Some of the levels have minor tweaks, such as the removal of a see-saw from the Star Light Zone boss encounter, and the removal of a crusher from the Final Zone boss room.

Some things were added to the game to make it easier, such as unlimited continues and a save feature. A scoring system was also added and the top 5 scores will be saved, alternately they can be uploaded to an online high score ranking. Three levels of difficulty were also added: very easy, easy, and normal. Very easy mode is completely lacking of enemies and only the boss of the Zones are present."

Not sure if this is a "double" post, but its hard to see in an 83 page thread!

Achievements for sonic 2 on android.....

I'm having trouble seeing the full list. I cant click on each one to see the full criteria? Eg "get through Metropolis............"  "Hit eggman 8 .........."

Does anyone know the full list, and is this a bug in the game? Tapping each achievement does nothing to expand the requirements!!!!

Hehe, Sonic the Hedgehog Mobile was my first Sonic game and it is one of the things that got me into the franchise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a69cJzT5ATUFound the low rez version. its...something.

That's Sonic 2: Dash. You should see Death Egg Robot 'cause it's hilarious, it has no legs and has a thruster instead of them.

It's nice to see the Hill Top boss finally patched, but now it make my 1:01 time attack record on act 2 look like I cheated or something... kinda bothers me. Wish they could've just reset it for that act or something.

Would be wicked if they could patch a "Complete" type thing into Sonic 1 Remastered. Being able to choose a level via clear game like Sonic 3K in this version of Sonic 2 is pretty nifty.

Perhaps in the console release? *wink wink nudge nudge*

I'm still holding out for an update to make Knuckles playable in Sonic CD, and for SEGA to allow Desert Dazzle and Final Fever to be finished and added tongue.png

The option in Sonic 2 which allows you to replay levels from your completed safe file was a master stroke. It's fun being able to blast through Emerald Hill Act 1 and not have to worry about collecting the chaos emeralds. This also allowed me to get over 99 lives. There is no life cap. It just says 00 when you get 100 lives, and then 01 for 101 lives etc.

Doesn't that get confusing? I mean it sounds like there could be situations where you think you have 100 extra lives, but then you get hit by something and GAME OVER.

It is certainly a good way to get people to re-buy an old game. Add in axed content. Especially scores points for fans. I would also like to see the stuff they started for Sonic CD make it in somehow. If its like ASRT we may see some DLC for CD in about a years time, after 90% of the interest has died down thus limiting potential buyers. Seems to be how Sega operates haha :P

Awesome though that would be, I'd again rather see Desert Dazzle revived for a new game. How amazing would that be?

It's things like this and Hidden Palace that really set the for these remakes way above everything else. S13D is a good port/emulation/whateveryouwanttocallit that goes out of the way to add a few little things here and there, but such can't hold a candle to the kinds of effort shown here. And I know a lot of people don't like the the "doing it better than SEGA" sentiments, but when you look things as objectively as you can, are you honestly able to argue that much? These remakes of the games are of the highest quality even before you get to the fan service.

Widescreen, bug fixes (as a result of the games being remade on a new engine), remastered soundtrack or two soundtracks in the case of CD, proposed additional content. It's just great.

When people say that they (in this case: Head-Cannon) could make a better Sonic game than Sega, it depends on how you word it.

If you were to say they could make one better than what they would do, of course; they have full grasp on how Sonic should be in at least one certain way. If you say that they make them better than Sega ever could or that Sega is absolutely incapable though is obviously false. Sega's league of professionals are more than able to make a game that could mop the floor with anything before it, its just that if their design decisions are competent enough to do it or not is the only question.

Apparently, just like S1, playing tracks 00 to 07 will affect which special stage you go to from the level select. There's an 8th one...

gixmpVH.png

I like how the 8th special stage is influenced by Sonic 4 Ep2 Sonic 3d Blast (Saturn) special stages tongue.png

I managed to beat the 8th special stage with Sonic, Knuckles and Tails. It's not as difficult as the 8th special stage in Sonic 1, but it's still very hard. The bomb placement isn't an issue, it's just the lack of rings available. For the first section your target is 80 rings (as Sonic alone, 90 if Sonic &Tails) but really you need to get at least 88 rings to stand a chance of reaching 270, which is the total number of rings required to get the emerald. At the end of the second section your target is 190, although realistically you need at least 216 rings to stand a chance of reaching 270.

You are awarded with a blue emerald:

I beat the stage with Tails by just one ring:

Really pleased with my effort with Knuckles. I got 280 rings:

I also made it by the skin of my teeth with Sonic:

There is no reward (as far as I can see) for beating the extra special stage. Just the satisfaction of doing it, I guess.
