I understand the whole donation if someone needed the money for something important, but just giving out donations to the first sob story you see like that?

I agree, that would be silly.

So why do you assume that's what happened? Wouldn't it be more logical that the guy got to know these people over time, built up sympathy gradually, and then over time those nice people persuaded others to help pitch in little-by-little until they'd pooled together 20.000 dollars to help what they believed was a good friend who they might save.

My question is why are you assuming the worst about a charitable group?

Every single sob story is a potential lie. Literally every person I've donated personally to could have been lying to my face about their condition, with the exception of an assumed war veteran who was missing his leg. Should we just stop with charity without undeniable proof of someone's standings? Especially since, in my cases at least, I am less likely to see the end result of my giving out five or ten or twenty to someone who's hungry and needs a burger. This dude, if I read correctly, was actually buying medical equipment to show people, and he had a second person in on it as well to keep up the charade. I imagine to get to $20,000, he was very consistent and convincing in his lie.

Alright, I think I need to reword my thoughts a little here.

If a person has a condition, and they are well adjusted and can live life on their own and with assistance, I just don't think people should feel sorry for them and throw money at them and generally treat them like they're any different from people without disabilities. If they actually need the money for something like a surgery, that's a dfferent story.

The Op gives the impression that this guy just put up a donation button after telling his story and people just kinda went with it.

I would have gotten suspicious to see him use the money for PC equipment and games. Did he ever say that he was saving for surgery or did he only get as specific as a 2000 dollar wheelchair or saving up for a plane ticket?

not that I'm vouching for the guy or anything but did he ever say he was unable to work in his supposed condition cuz that might be another reason for the money.

Remember that 20,000 seems like a lot but bare in mind MOST of that would have been a tiny donation or two from a LOT of people, with rich folk picking up the slack now and then.  Individually he probably hasn't hurt people too much but collectively... hoo boy.

I'm not the least bit bothered what's going to happen to him now. We all know what the internet can be like to people who do this sort of thing.

In a perfect world he'd be charged, but I don't know what the local laws are for him.

I hope for his sake he never is paralized because with this in his history there won't be anyone to support him (at least not anyone with sense).

I remember that other stream mistake. Some guy was doing it with his girlfriend and left his stream on. Ahahaa.

But yeah, this guy is an asshole.

And just think, that happened less than a month after the guy who left his stream on when he started viewing porn and decided to... do things...

And next console gen, PS4 is gonna allow live streaming with the potential to let the viewer see both the player and the game... ... ... ..

*sings* There maybe trouble ahead...

When you shoot yourself in the groin, it not only hurts but it shows the kind of person you really are.

This was a very despicable. People gave him money from kindness and both he and his girlfriend were willing to play them all like chumps, even with that sorry excuse of a cover up. Now that he's exposed, I bet he has a lot of people ready to give him a damn good reason to use that fancy wheelchair of his...

Whatever comes their way, may it come. I hope that bed is comfortable, because now he's going to have to lie in it.

I can't even begin to describe this, why do people like this like to make it hard for people with actual problems be believed, when they could be the one's getting helped instead of some guy who just wanted money for more games. I'm somewhat losing faith in people now.

I really don't know what to say. There are people who need money like that because they are disabled! This guy must be some greedy fuck if this is what he does for a living. How does he sleep at night?

$20,000? Pff, JessicaElwood(furporn scam artist) probably did better than that.

I have no idea who that is, so I googled it.

I now know the whole story, plus her real name and personal info, just from the first page of google results.. So, yeah. Douchebag borderline criminal activity on the internet will get you found out and smeared online in record time.

I don't know what to type I am pretty disgusted to be honest. dry.png

Seeing as there is people out there with genuine physical and mental disabilities who can't even get support from the government to support their daily needs and then there is this arsehole begging on the internet and out right lying about his condition!

This is the problem with donating online you don't know what is true and what is false.

I never donate money.

Not because I'm some greedy bitch, or because I barely have any that I don't want to waste on pointless shit.

But because I can never fully trust these people. The world is filled with liars. And some are really good liars.

The second result on google is an encyclopedia dramatica page.
That doesn't bode well.

I feel bad for anyone who donated to this guy out of general good will and kindness. They must be livid to realize that what they donated towards the improvement of his supposed condition was all and all a giant sham. But the kicker about this is that I'm pretty sure it's going to dissuade a lot of those folks from doing the same to someone or a group of people who genuinely could have used the help.

Then again, being the internet, people should have been more wary of donating to begin with. It's kind of like giving a homeless person some spare change/dollars, but without seeing their reaction face to face. Part of you wants to think that you gave them a chance at saving up for or paying for a meal on you. But part of you thinks that they could just as easily get up and spend it on booze the moment you're gone.

And you very well can't gauge whether or not it's the latter online either. My brother and I have discussed in length how to gauge when someone who seems down on their luck is trying to con you out of money or not - by offering to share food with them or purchase a meal for them. I prefer to do this if I can for two reasons: I'm not handing out money, and if taken up on the offer, I've legitimately helped someone out.

Depending on how they react after the offer is made is where you can tell if they really appreciated it or not. Most of the folks I've offered this to have usually taken whatever I had on hand and thanking me before I went on my way. My brother has had a few more than I have who bemoaned the offer and said they'd rather have the money.

Sad to say, but idiots like this bloke set off folks who legitimately have issues/ask for donations in a much harder place.
