I think it's just assumed to be true due to Sonic being affiliated with Coke in an ad campaign.

I was a Sonic fan for over 20 years before I noticed that Tails' name was a pun:

Sonic and co's size, as a few others have said. Then again, they are animals, so you wouldn't really expect them to be any taller than around 3 1/2 feet.
