Yoshi's New Island (3DS)

I like the visuals.

I wonder what the plot is this time. Something's gotta validate Baby Mario palling with Yoshi again.

Needs Baby Luigi usage

To specify, this is the only reason I liked your post.

Best song Nintendo's ever cranked out.

You know, the art style kind of reminds me of a painting. I think it has potential. I needs to be fixed up, sure, but I think Nintendo is kinda on to something here.

It also kind of reminds me of the opening cutscene in the original game.

Only not as shitty. It's not great, sure, but the original Yoshi's Island's opening cutscene graphics?

Dear GOD how horrible.

The original didn't have enormous eggs ricocheting off the walls.  Although with A Link To The Rehashed just announced, there is reason to be worried.  If this is just an expanded remake of the original, I won't be buying it... but I don't think the other level maps shown off were echoes of the original game's levels, were they?  Possibly it's just a throwback first level.  Or even demo footage, as it seems like the game is still fairly early in development.

I already know how this'll pan out with them using a 3D model in a 2D side scroller, it's going to be ass and clunky and you can't get the same amount of animation possibility into a 3D rig as much as you can with a 2D sprite, it's just going to be slow and clunky just like Sonic 4 was, I'm not going to write it off completely, I'll still keep an eye on it in HOPES of improvement before release, but as it stands it hasn't ticked any "this impressed me" boxes at all.

They can improve the visuals one million % by simply adding big black lines around everything...

Just sayin'

I'm pretty sure this is still all sprites, just pre-rendered ones like Donkey Kong Country.  The way Yoshi pops from one animation to another when jumping/changing direction etc looks too sudden to be a 3D model.

Though to be honest, that is the reason I am most paranoid of the animation quality not improving.  Either these were just a quick job to use as placeholder sprites for game testing, while the animation team take their time to work their magic and redo them, or... they aren't.

If anything, I'm more worried about the music. I didn't mind YIDS's music, but it did not have the staying power and awesomeness of the original.

3D model, 2D sprites or pre-render, that has absolutely no bearing on clunky, slow and "ass" the game plays at all.

I hope this is the case, after Luigi's Mansion 2 I expect the animation quality to be equal or better, or at least have the same amount of charm Yoshi's Island had.

I kinda hope we get more footage soon.  I'm sure most of the nostalgic fans prefer the fluttery legs from the first game, but I'm really curious what the running animation will be like in this one.  The running animation is probably literally the one thing I liked in DS.  Yoshi looked so cool and determined.

I think I'm more criticial of this than NSMB for two reasons:

NSMB, while using "generic" visuals in terms of not doing anything outside the current "house style" for the Mario games, was not just graphics from Mario World or Mario 3 redrawn exactly but in a new style, like this is.  They may have been in that "house style" every single time, but each new game had new backgrounds drawn from scratch.

And on a personal level, I just adore NSMB gameplay, so I personally am more forgiving of the visuals department.  For some reason, here I find myself asking "So... what's new?" more because Yoshi's Island is not a franchise that can just simply appease me with more of the same.

Yeah but DKC lots a hella lot more impressive than this garbage, Yoshi looks so static compared to his Island sprite, where as DKCR simply improved over DKC's.

Hopefully it's just place holder stuff whilst like Jezz said, Nintendo work their magic on it like they did with Luigi's mansion 2, and hopefully this sequel can live up to be a decent send off, like DKCR was.

It looks like Yoshi's Story graphics, and because I don't like that game I won't like this one either! >=/

In all seriousness though, don't jump to conclusions and graphics don't always make a game. True the graphics don't look fantastic (although I think the background and foreground are nice), but since this game is coming out at a much later date than most shown in the Nintendo Direct, it could look different when it's eventually released. And once it comes out, I still want to play both this new Yoshi game and Yoshi's Epic Yarn on Wii U!

Hopefully this game will be better then Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Island DS.

The game is ass ugly.

I think this should have been a Wii-U game honestly.

Because it seems like they tried to go for a Yoshi's Island + crayons artstyle, but because of the 3DS's resolution and graphical capabilities, it will look more like a washed out painting rather then what they seem to be going for. Not to say 3DS's graphics can't handle something like that, but it seems like this would look much more appealing on the big screen in HD, rather then the 3DS's screen.

I also don't like how they're blurring out the backgrounds a bit like in NSMB2. It didn't work then and it won't work here.
And does anybody else hate Yoshi's animation? He walks and jumps around.....weird. Like unpolished and lazy (both the animation and Yoshi himself).

And good god, those FEET. Shrink those bastards, I don't need any more Foot Fetish Yoshi Porn.

Don't tell me you forgot about this:

This is a still a thing.

...Also keep in mind 3DS games look about 10x better when you're actually playing them. The initial screenshots and videos look like ass sometimes.

Nope, just saying that this might be better looking artistically if it was a Wii-U game instead of 3DS.

And viewing the game in person instead of screens won't change anything besides the resolution being better. The artstyle will still look bleh.

I assumed that's what you meant when you referred to resolution. Blurriness is common for 3DS games from what I remember, at least from the initial shots. Once you actually play the game the backgrounds look better. I could be wrong with this title, but I think the final product will look much better.

Anyone else think they are going to add more babies to the roster? Baby Daisy hasn't appeared in a Yoshi's Island game proper at all being relegated to spinoff titles. The last we saw of Baby Wario was in the sequel.

Baby Waluigi, well... at this point, Nintendo would like us to think he was spawned out of the forehead of a god in his proper adult form.

Forget about adding new babies. Its the year of luigi, so baby Luigi should be the one on Yoshi not Mario.

I doubt that we'll see new or even alternative babies; that feels like a one-game gimmick, and the game it was in didn't go down too well.  Which is a shame, as I thought it was a great gimmick and a natural extension to the gameplay of the original.  Oh well.

Just so long as they don't go for the uber-conventional and make it a reiteration of the original formula, but in 3D.  Which they probably will.

I'm expecting them to do away with all babies sans Mario, honestly. Sort of like they were a gimmick for YIDS and it'll stay that way. I certainly wouldn't expect to see Baby Daisy or Baby Waluigi.
