Worst game you ever bought

We all have a game we regret spending cash on to the pits of Hell. So SSMB, what was your biggest dissapointment that ensured you lost valuable money that will never return?

Personally, I rent before I buy so I can't be part of it.

Probably Sonic 2006. I went in knowing how bad it was as well, but it couldn't be helped, I was curious dammit!

Other than that, I dunno really, maybe Sonic 4 Episode 1 (though I actually return to 06 MORE) or Metroid: Other M, if non-Sonic games are counted. But even then I don't think Other M is anywhere NEAR as bad as 06 or even Shadow and Episode 1 (Shadow was a gift though - again, I knew it was bad so refused to buy it myself at the time).

While I've never returned a game, I have a few that I legitimately regret buying and would sell in a heartbeat if they were actually worth something.

Samba Di Amigo (Wii)

Just... found this game completely unfun and very quickly discovered that I am not into Samba music at all as probably about 95% of the song choices were boring as hell to me..

Drawn To Life (DS)

A boring, generic platformer with a painfully restrictive system for custom characters.  Total disappointment for what at the time was a super cool concept.

Star Fox Command (DS)

I don't like RTS gameplay and all the combat segments are randomised all-range mode fights that last like 20 seconds.  Bleh.

Teenage mutant ninja turtles re-shelled.(at least that's the one that comes to mind) that game was a embarrassment. It was half-assed,cheap and annoying to play online. Although thats what I should have expected from a xbla game....

Oh and halo wars. That game didn't feel anything like halo atmosphere wise, and was a boring rts.

Most likely Sonic & The Black Knight. I even paid full price for it. $50 for garbage.

What can I say? I share Felix's pain

Though Asscreed 3 is worse because it was 60 bucks and the most boring shit ever, what a waste of good cash. Fuck.

Spyro: Enter The Dragon Fly (PS2).

cover_eu_ps2_large.jpg

It had horrendous loading times (as bad as Sonic 06). The game often freezes and stops working. Game data would get corrupted. It has a lot of sound issues. It's far too short compared to the PS1 trilogy, and the levels - seriously lacking in originality - are based on stages from Spyro 2 & 3. Pretty rubbish.

I played this shit until the first boss fight and never touched it again.

This thing was fucking unplayable. The controls where the worst I've ever seen in my life and the levels where just stright lines.

God dammit, I never regreted playing a single game until I got this.

Sonic '06

Uhuh, original reply of the century award goes to SSMB user SuperLink.

Luckily.. I didn't buy it at fullprice, because I knew it was bad having played some of it before. I just didn't know how bad til I had it for myself, oh boy.

06. Well, I didn't buy it. My mum and sis got it for me when they went on holiday. Picked it up dirt cheap.

Shitty game and I don't think its needed to describe just how shitty a game it is...

Probably the Tales of Phantasia GBA port.

Game with an unnrefined fighting engine put into an even shittier control scheme with crap framerate, Graphic that don't mesh, and some of the worst voiceacting I've ever seen.

Oh yeah, and butchered music.

They should have localized the PSP port.

Lunar Legend on the GBA. They promised a faithful recreation of Silver Star Harmony Complete, but built with the GBA in mind.

They lied. Granted, this is mitigated somewhat by how I knew it was going to suck from the start and bought it anyway.

Samba Di Amigo (Wii)

Just... found this game completely unfun and very quickly discovered that I am not into Samba music at all as probably about 95% of the song choices were boring as hell to me..

I wonder if you would have liked the original. The controls actually work on that one.

I don't buy games I think I'll dislike. I always rent/emulate or play the demo first so I can honestly say I've not wasted my money on much (I got 06 for 15$ so it wasn't a big deal).

The only game I really like I wasted my money on is Super Mario 64, say what you will I hate the game for the repetitiveness, controls and camera. Why do I feel like it was a waste? Because everyone told me it was "teh bestest game evar" and that I'd love it, heck I thought I'd love it.

Well I didn't. I beat the first boss, turned it off and sold it, having never played it since.

I won't say it's a bad game, but it was a huge disappointment to me.

Haha, funny how a good portion of the answers are Sonic games. =P

Unfortunately I have to go with Felix's choice as well and say Sonic and the Black Knight.

Don't need to go into specifics, since everyone knows everything that this game did wrong: gameplay style, level design, bad soundtrack(IMO), lack of content and replay value to justify the $50 price.

First off, I love the characters. I love the soundtrack (which is hard to find due to the game sharing a name with a Megadeth song). I love the concepts it brings, namely being able to not die and losing body parts and still be able to use them. I did get a couple of laughs too but...

Ehhhhh....

The game has its flaws, most of it is because its rather annoying. Bryce has a problem keeping himself together it can mess up you're game if you not used to it by now. Enemies have to respawn and can be hard to kill at times. You don't have too much control over your own body parts. And most of the game is an escort mission, due to the fact Bryce just can't die so they have to give him a game over somehow.

I mean its cool to do some of the stuff in the game and it had great concepts but it just have too many flaws. Granted I did get it for 20 bucks and its not the worst game I've played. Its just...yeah.

Not counting Sonic '06, as it's obvious...

TMNT & Golden Axe: Beast Rider. Oh dear - I bought both of these knowing they were bad games, and I don't think I was prepared for how bad they actually are. It actually amazes me that I managed to complete TMNT, not quite had the nerve to go back to Beast Rider just yet.

Might also be controversial here and say Sonic Advance 3. I wasn't entirely sold on the team mechanic in Sonic Heroes, and I absolutely hated it in Advance 3. The levels feel too big, the hub levels don't really signpost you too well towards the Acts you need to complete, and it all just felt like a poor attempt at making a Heroes style game for the GBA. A real shame, as I love Advance & Advance 2.

People did tell me at the time the original was better, and I do wonder.  Wouldn't change my taste in music mind you.

Probably Last Battle

in the description for this video the uploader describes it as the best game ever......wow......

Painful combat, bland levels,  complete lack of animation and story....thankfully I only paid about £1 for it out a charity shop but it was overpriced at that.

My little brother used to have a game called the mission which was a game based on a nike advert and was as good as that sounds...

Well, I never actually bought Sonic '06 (not even because it's so bad, but because I don't have the console) so I guess I can exclude myself from that.

Other than that... I'm sure there's plenty, but I just don't recall them for some reason.  I always find myself enjoying something about a game, even if it's an utter mess.  I rarely ever sell or get rid of games, but here are two that just... well, I had the opportunity to get something else at the time, and I really should have gotten that something else.  I ended up trading both of these games.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Melee (GameCube)

Okay, okay.  Seriously.  Why did I get this game?  I could have gotten the two other TMNT GameCube games (one of which even had the original arcade game as an unlockable bonus) and I settled for freaking Mutant Melee.  Don't get me wrong, this isn't a totally bad game.  There is a bit of fun to be had with it, but not enough to keep me wanting to play it.  The controller feels lifeless if that makes sense and it's just a bit boring.  It's just another game made around the timeframe everyone wanted to copy Smash Bros, and this was just so bland.  Again, why?!  I don't know!  WHY?!  Granted, I don't know if the other options were any better, but at least they were platformers, so they would have been more to my liking.

That being said, I don't like the 2003 TMNT as is, so chances are I would have been unsatisfied with any choice I made, but this... I don't understand.  Why?  It's like if I had the choice between eating a slightly lackluster chocolate bar and eating a chocolate bar wrapper.  Why on earth would I choose the latter, but that's essentially what I did in this case.  I... I don't even... god...

GoldenEye Rogue Agent (DS)

Okay, okay, before any GoldenEye fans start jumping to the "Oh, yeah, that game sucked!  I would regret purchasing it too if I weren't keenly aware of how terrible it was!"  Let me just say that the console version, while still a lackluster title that is completely unfitting to hold the "GoldenEye" title, can have a bit of a fun factor to it.  It's silly and over-the-top, but it's simplistic.  The game itself isn't bad, but the hype it builds from having "GoldenEye" in the title really makes it disappointing.  If you look past the title, though, you get a fairly solid action game with great graphics and a great soundtrack.

The DS version, on the other hand, is the most "meh" game I've ever played.  Don't even like FPS games with rare exceptions, so naturally the only reason I got this was because I'm a Bond fan and I wanted to complete my collection.  Wasn't worth it.  The game is so dreadfully dull, watered down, and just has the most boring soundtrack in any game I've ever heard.  EVER.  They couldn't just a transposition of the console version's songs?  They had to make all new and boring songs for it?  Really?  Seriously just listen to this riveting orchestral score.

Okay, in fairness, this would have been okay in the Atari days... but you know, since it's on the Nintendo DS... yeah.

Anyway, long story short, the game was the most bland, fogettable thing.

----

Runners up for this category include New Super Mario Bros. (which isn't bad, but it didn't entertain me) and Star Fox Command (see JezMM's first post).

I would say Sonic Genesis, but I didn't buy it. So...

bomberman-act-zero-xbox-360.jpg

Yeah... I got it for a friend who wanted it for his birthday this year, and he says it's very frustrating that you get sent to the title screen every time you died, with no save feature to boot. I went to his house to see for myself, and yep, I agree with him.

It also didn't help that you just did the same thing over and over for 99 levels, and with an annoyingly repetitive soundtrack and boring looking visuals, I'd say this is the worst game I've bought.

Though this game may eclipse Act Zero:

lara_croft_tomb_raider_the_angel_of_dark

I only paid £3 for this game just this week, and I've only beat the first level, but the signs aren't looking good. The music's great, but the control is awful. Lara is so twitchy when you try and move her around.

Also, the game is occasionally unresponsive and glitchy, thanks to Eidos letting the money signs cloud their common sense. There was a part where I had to jump a gap to the other side, but the game didn't respond properly and thus, Lara didn't go forward far enough, so she fell to her death (which caused an audio glitch which looped Lara's fall scream over and over for a minute, which was very annoying).

Sonic the Hedgehog  4: Episode I. An absolutely horrible case of a missed opportunities (Episode I) in a series of an absolutely horrible case of missed opportunities (the entire Sonic 4 saga). The fact that the game's PR telling us everything we wanted to hear despite the product actually never reflecting it one iota.

Runner up is Frogger Returns. It's severely lacking, very generic, and painfully short in damn near every area-most offensively, it has ONLY FOUR LEVELS of mostly very easy difficulty and lacks any online multiplayer for it's few multiplayer modes. And this was a WiiWare/PSN game released in 2009. Frogger: He's Back for the PSX, released twelve years before Returns had seven times over that number of levels, which included five additional separate multiplayer levels (and that's not counting recycled layouts of pre-existing levels used for another ten levels-bringing the game's total number of levels overall to 38-nearly ten times over Frogger Returns's number of levels).
