Mario & Sonic at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games

It's just a Mii in a Ludwig costume.

I think that's their excuse to get around the lack of actual new playable characters, like in the London 2012 and (if I remember rightly) the original Winter Olympics game. Namely, you can unlock/buy costumes of various different characters from the Mario and Sonic universes and dress your Mii up in them. Better than nothing I guess.

Not the same though :( that stinks also didnt notice the face, whoops

Just for those interested, here's a list of all the Mario & Sonic costumes from the London 2012 game which you can expect to make a return here as well as some new ones (hopefully):

EDIT: And the first review is here, courtesy of Nintendo Life!

Some things look amazingly improved - character animations are vastly more detailed, selection screens are more exciting (I can't wait until someone rips all of those images) and Omochao apparently gives your character interviews.

However, I am not surprised that the game is getting low marks. A lot of it seems rehashed.

I might get this game, as a used copy and probably after someone makes a skating patch - I dunno. Just seeing Eggman and Waluigi in a Bullet Bill Sleighride makes my cold heart melt.

Still on the fence about getting it, but not as a new copy.

God is a Geek gives the game 5/10:

http://www.godisageek.com/2013/11/mario-sonic-sochi-2014-olympic-winter-games-review/

Looks like it's going to met with the general reception that all of the Mario & Sonic games have, which is no big surprise really. I'd have been more shocked if it had been getting consistent 8s and 9s.

Anyway, if the average scores haven't completely put you off and you plan on pre-ordering the game for the EU release on Friday, the cheapest place online is currently Amazon.co.uk for £29.99.

EDIT: Here's another review, this time from LazyGamer who give it 5.5/10:

And a 6/10 from N-Europe:

Oh, and a 3/5 from DigitalSpy too!

CVG give it a 4/10:

CVG gave it a 4, calling it the worst in the series.

"A woefully undercooked and uninspired party game that's actually worse than its predecessors.

+ Looks bright and colourful

+ Some of the unlockables are fun

- Creatively vapid

- Stagnant character roster

- Tiny event count"

This doesn't look good. I guess from a quick fire multiplayer game, this is to be expected though.

Based on all the review scores so far I've worked out that the average is pretty much bang on 6/10. Nothing too surprising there, really.

It seems like your perception of this will depend on your opinions of the previous titles, and what aspects you wanted to see improved. As such it's either going to be something completely forgettable or alternatively a harmless bit of fun that, while lacking in any real style or substance, is an enjoyable enough way to spend some time.

Critics are now falling out of tolerance with the obvious cash cow.

I think the next Mario and Sonic games after this should be primarily based on the dream events, with some events based on the Olympic Games, that seems to be the only reason why people get these games now. Or they should just ditch the Olympic angle entirely and make it a straight-up Mario and Sonic party game a la Mario Party. Or just give us the Mario and Sonic crossover platformer(s) the gaming world has dreaming about and waiting for years, damnit!

I don't think we'll ever see a Mario & Sonic game that is completely focused on the Dream Events because, in reality, it's not just a Nintendo/SEGA collaboration - it's also got to be approved by the International Olympic Committee seeing as it's an officially licensed game.

The first Mario & Sonic had hardly any Dream Events and a much greater focus on the real sports, but because of the impressive sales they've allowed the developers to have more leeway when it comes to incorporating more ideas from the source franchises in later installments. With each successive game, they're getting more and more lenient, but I very much doubt at any point they'll go "right, you can make it solely about the Dream Events". At the end of the day, the Mario & Sonic series is meant to provide a more irreverent and family-friendly take on the Olympics compared to the inevitable proper officially licensed game which plays it completely straight. So the real life events are always going to come first, we can only hope that the Dream Events in future games continue to increase in number (perhaps at best equalling the real ones) and are more fleshed out.

Of course, that's not to say Nintendo and SEGA couldn't collaborate on a different Mario & Sonic series that had no grounding in reality whatsoever. It just won't be an Olympics one, that's all.

EDIT: Back to the reviews, here's a German video review from TheGamezGenerationTV. Unless you speak German you won't understand anything they're saying but they give it a 7/10 and there's plenty of new footage for those who are interested.

2013 is looking to be a very mediocre year for Sonic.

But, this technically isn't even a sonic game.

Technically it is, since it's being counted as one of the three exclusive Sonic games.

They really never tolerated it. Check out the reviews for the previous games.

Yeah, but even still its more of a crossover game than being an actual sonic game, not to mention the fact that this series has always been a nintendo exlcusive so it makes me wonder how this is apart of the 3 game deal anyway. (don't answer that last part).

Most critics for the past three seemed to give it average scores, but Mario and Sonic 4 is the first time I'm seeing really negative reviews for this game. You did get some 6s and 5s with the majority of 6s-7.5s, but the groups of 5s, 4s, and now (going by Metro's review) 3s is unheard of compared to previous games.

Score comparison time:

Metacritic

M&S '08: 67 (Wii) / 70 (DS)

M&S '10: 72 (Wii) / 76 (DS)

M&S '12: 66 (Wii & 3DS)

M&S '14: 56

GameRankings

M&S '08: 68.01% (Wii) / 69.06% (DS)

M&S '10: 75.90% (Wii) / 71.51% (DS)

M&S '12: 65.07% (Wii) / 67.30% (3DS)

M&S '14: 56.70%

That's almost a full 10% drop compared with Mario and Sonic '12 for the Wii, the then-lowest scoring game of the series. In comparison with the past three games that hovered around the 65 and 70 marks, Mario and Sonic 2014's fall to the mid-50s is a significant drop.

Well if they're not going to focus exclusively on the Dream Events, then they should at least give the series a giant shake up a la Mario Party 9 to make things fresh.
