OMG before I forget, could you do me a favor Jez & upload footage of Windy Hill Zone 2 with Red Burst & Tropical Coast Zone 4 with Ivory Lightning, you make it sound so epic & I wanna see what it looks like since you said it didnt exactly have correlation with any of the past themes in Tropical Coast & it used different music

Do you mean the secret stages for Windy Hill and Tropical Coast?  I'll see what I can do.

Don't get your hopes up for any more Wii U influence on secret levels though, just did Frozen Factory (man the rings were hard to find on that huge wide open snowball level but it does force you to learn your way around at least - I can see a lot of speedrunning potential now I've been forced to play it over and over and thus get absolutely sick of the snowball puzzles and seek ways to skip them).

Anyway, as you might guess, Frozen Factory's extra act...

Is another Wisp focused stage borrowing geometry from another act.  This time it was Asteroid, making use of the Snowboarding areas from Act 2.  Tons of routes and a very ever-moving forward theme.  Out of the Wisps remaining, I guess this leaves Cyan Laser and Yellow Drill for Silent Forest and Sky Road, but we'll see.  Maybe Lava Mountain might have a non-Wisp related Extra Act, though there's no Red Rings to collect on Lava Mountain.

If there is an Extra Act on Lava Mountain, I guess maybe you unlock it by collecting Red Rings on all the other Extra Acts, but no idea.  All the same, I have been collecting every Red Ring on the Extra Acts before moving on to the next Zone.  Once I've done all the Red Rings I'll finish up Hard Mode, and then I might try and S rank everything.

Dayum son .-. I guess instead of rolling around as a snowball they used the snowboard aye? Whatever tho, I got some faith in Silent Forest & Sky Road, im totally thinking that there is gonna be an extra zone in Lava Mountain because technically the bosses are registered as Zone 1 & so on. So maybe after you collect every Red Star Ring in the game you unlock some new gadgets, maybe a improved or new skill for Sonic & thats pretty much all I can think of

I'd love one for stuff like this where I am apparently SSMB chief investigator of the 3DS version's secrets until everyone else gets their hands on it but the priceyness sounds unappealing, I do not have any interest in recording 3DS games on a regular basis.

I'm disappointed that this version doesn't seem to have a level as big and rewarding as Tropical Coast 1 on the Wii U version.

Sky Road 1's music from the wii u version in...well that's odd, hmm maybe that means their are other tracks from the wii u version that aren't present in the 3ds version.

The worlds on the Nintendo 3DS version are still pretty expansive (and more challenging), yeah they're not as open as the Wii U levels, but they're not a super-closed level, and there are many spherical worlds, which are pretty expansive, AND, though some puzzles seem a bit frustrating (Frozen Factory 3, anyone? (not saying I don't like it, though =P)), some other are really fun to play, like Tropical Coast's apple puzzle, gosh that seemed so fun!

And, if that's not enough, there are Extra Levels and Hard Mode, which are pretty awesome, the only thing that disappoints me is the lack of the Hidden World, but they aren't the big thing, so it's OK.

Silent Forest Red Ring'd.

To my surprise the extra stage was focused on not Drill or Laser, but Burst again.  It used Act 2, the grinding level, for geometry, but there's next to no grinding at all, you spend most of the level airborne.  The level itself was pretty fun, but the Red Rings were total jerks.  Most of them are in mid-air, and since Burst is not the most finely-tuned of Wisps to control, you need more than a little bit of luck to time your movements exactly right to sail through them.

Thanks for all the info - much appreciated.

If you have time, I don't suppose you could type/ put up a red ring guide? Or direct us to someone who already has?

Again, thanks. :)

I was really tempted to make one but when going through the levels to get the ones I missed, I was working on the basis of "well I've only played this level once, psychology suggests I'll be compelled to take the same route I took first time and make the same choices as I did first time since I don't remember where to go" and yet I often found myself managing to get all the red rings I missed while never coming across the ones I apparently already had from my first playthrough.  So going back and identifying those would be scary, especially now that they're all transparent.

HAVING SAID THAT if you're having trouble with any particular ones, post in the help thread and I'll prolly be happy to replay the stage to jog my memory.  Overall I haven't found them too tricky.  Forward going 3D style acts are usually just a case of keeping your eyes sharp and trying the routes that look most complicated.  2D style acts are a case of again, going for routes that look tricky.  You'd be surprised how much you can backtrack in 2D acts compared to previous games thanks to the parkour too.  On Frozen Factory, I got the 5th Red Ring (which is beyond the final checkpoint) while missing the 4th, and was able to backtrack two checkpoints' worth to find the 4th one.  The wide open puzzle 3D acts are the trickiest, especially the snowball one, though once I did find the 2nd Red Ring I was kicking myself for not exploring that segment earlier and instead putting too much energy into a Quake Wisp related path that turned out to be a red herring and just a shortcut.

Finally, if you ever ever get a Wisp just before a checkpoint with no use for it between there and the checkpoint, you can prolly assume there's a "one chance or you'll have to restart the level" red ring using that Wisp just ahead.  If you're clever you can sometimes dodge the checkpoint even though the game usually dumps you right on them after a fade-out to a new planetoid.  If you miss a final red ring and reach the goal on a 3D level, let the timer run out and you'll be sent back to the last checkpoint.  I'm so glad this exploit exists because the final red ring on Silent Forest 1 was harsh.

Sucks that the extra zones arent that amazing as I wanted em to be, I like the overall design, just wish they didnt reuse the level like that. I have faith in Sky Road Extra Zone though because the 3DS version actually has a cutscene of Sonic & Zavok in Stormy Desert Ruins, so maybe that's the extra zone, im still thinking after you collect every Red Star Ring in the game you unlock a new skill for Sonic like in Sonic Colors or unlock a zone in Lava Mountain.

And damn the 3DS version's final boss is damn near Nega Wisp Armor, you have the wisps fly around you & create a aura then you button mash to destroy Eggman's mech. The 3DS version using the wisps more is one of the things I like about this version compared to the Wii U version.

IKR? It would have been better if they made different structures, but I love how the gameplay and mechanics for the level changes drastically so you don't have a "Playing the exact same stage but with more harms" feel, like on Extra Tropical Coast, in which there's no water anymore.

But I don't think Sky Road's extra stage will be Desert Ruins, since so far the extra stages are past stages with some structure changes but totally new mechanics. I just hope Lava Mountain to actually have an extra zone.

Zazz you were still keeping your hopes far too high!  All Red Rings have been collected...

Sky Road's Extra Act is based off Act 1, the 2D Casino stage, but now it's drill wisps aplenty.  All the pieces of scenery that looked "hollow" are drilling areas, with the normal routes blocked off.  Good stage, very different to the original, which of course did not even feature the Drill Wisp.

And, as I guessed, collecting Red Rings on all Extra Acts resulted in an Extra Act for Lava Mountain.  It's the final boss again but he has several brand new (rather terrifying) new attacks, in which he combines both his yellow and blue lasers together to either make a cross stream of two to dodge, or a massive one that fills half the path.  He also slams the ground during his drilling attack, causing Sonic to lose the ability to jump for the next portion of dodging rocks, unless you manage to be off the ground at the time he slams it.  Other than that, it plays pretty much just like the regular version.  No reward for beating it.

I'll carry on with

Hard Mode

and then it's on to S Ranking!

Seriously i keep hearing the 3DS version being better than the Wii U version. What are the points that make it superior? I'll listen.

Critics seem to be saying the complete opposite, and I haven't heard much besides Jazz prefer the 3DS version.

3DS has online so there's that.

Mhmm. Skyward Sword and FFXIII's scores were far too high for how those two games actually fared in terms of execution.
