Sonic Generations remixes vs. their original counterparts

Planet Wisp and Radical Highway Modern are where they dropped the ball imo. Egg Dragoon also sounds pretty much the same as the original, I literally can't tell the difference. I see what Planet Wisp Classic went for, but I think an Act 2-3 style remix to go with Modern's Act 1 remix (that could have also changed more) would have made the feel less jarring and more reminiscent of Colours.

Actually Unleashed's Egg Dragoon is definitely pretty different to Generations'.  There's more going on, it's more frantic, out of control and punchier.  The Generations version is a lot more in control, they pulled back on the instruments a little and the crescendos aren't as dynamic.  I like to think that the respective pieces reflect the situation Sonic was in during each of the respective Egg Dragoon sequences.  In Unleashed, he's stuck as the Werehog, falling down a huge shaft on a lone platform, debris falling with him and surrounded by the towering presence of the Egg Dragoon.  He clearly has much less control of the situation here.  However in Generations Sonic is running through a tunnel chasing the Egg Dragoon down.  He's his normal self and stronger than he ever was (as evidence in the Perfect Chaos fight where he didn't need Super Sonic at all).  He's a lot more in control of the situation has a whole.

I know I'm in the minority with Classic Planet Wisp, but it's actually one of my favourite tracks.  I've seen the Sonic CD Bad Future parallel drawn to it a lot and I actually wholly agree with it.  It's hard, edgy, mechanical in its nature and actually makes a little more sense than one would think for the level because of the fact that Classic Sonic spends almost all of the level within the mechanical construction site part of the level.

I really hope FTCR does a Super Power Flour Hour video on this, similar to the " Sonic Cd Blast" video.

Anyway, here are my picks, at least in terms of levels. I may do bosses later if I'm feeling up to it.

Green Hill: I'll just go with Classic. It's almost the  same as the original, but with new instruments, so I tip my hat to it. I'm not much of a fan of the Modern's  jazzy rock version.

Casino Night: Modern, without a doubt. I love how an actual jazz band was used, and it fights the level perfectly. Classic sounds the same as the original, but with random electronic beeping noises in the background.

Chemical Plant: Classic. Again, almost the same as original, but with updated instruments. Modern is a perfectly competent track, but something about it feels off to me. I can't place my finger on it.

Mushroom Hill: Modern. Gotta love those added guitar riffs.

Sky Sanctuary: Classic. What I said about Green Hill and Chemical Plant applies here.

Emerald Coast: Classic. Sounds the same as the original, but it's completely done on an electric guitar, and seeing as how I'm biased toward that instrument, I prefer the classic version.

Speed Highway: Classic. I love that Cash Cash went out of their way to give us a familiar melody, but make the song sound like a futuristic techno dance club song.

City Escape. Modern( My favorite remix in the game!) Amazing vocals from Tony Harnell and Ted Poley, more emphasis on Guitar, and 100 % more cheese. What's not to love?

Radical Highway: Classic. The modern version, as described best by SomecallmeJohnny " sounds like it's coming out of a synthesizers asshole". Original is a bit repetitive. Kind of like the Speed Highway classic mix, I love how techno this song sounds.

Seaside Hill: Modern. Kudos to Jun Senoue for infusing this track with Ocean Place. Classic is the exact same as the original.

Water Palace: Modern. Both tracks sound the same as the original, but Cash Cash at least put some effort into making this track sound of  higher quality.

Crisis City: Original. I used to prefer the Modern track, but I'm slightly leaning toward the original right now. Modern does sound more intense, but the original is slightly more catchy to me.

Rooftop Run: Original. I do love the upbeat Classic and Modern remixes, but again, I'm biased to the electric guitar, which makes me more pumped up.

Tropical Resort: Hmm... this one's tricky. I'll call a tie between the original and modern tracks. Classic doesn't even sound original in any way. I like the heavier emphasis on rock in the modern track, but I also love the iconic, slightly more subdued original version.

Planet Wisp. * Yawn*. Classic, I guess. I find the original and modern tracks to be a bit too boring, honestly. Classic is a bit of a guilty pleasure. Senoue went for a more genesis feel to this track, and while it can hurt my hears a bit, I can at least find the song whenever I go into my head.

Crisis City Classic considered bad? But not Seaside hill classic?

wat_gif_by_ryla_sehn.gif

Crisis City didn't exactly feel slow, or generic. I mean Seaside hill Classic was generic. It seriously did the most expected thing you could imagine in a Classic remix. Crisis City on the other hand makes good use of the electric guitar and rock elements, overpowering the "techno" element you explained.

Sorry if I come off as rude, but I just can't comprehend why someone says Seaside hill Classic isn't bland, yet say Crisis City Classic is.

One of the reasons why I said I didn't like classic Crisis City namely because the main instrumentation was slower paced, compared to the faster tempo of the original and the modern remix. For me, it honestly felt like a remix that would better fit modern Sonic with the emphasis on rock guitars. I wouldn't really call it bad, it just seemed a bit more...."there."

I'm of the opinion that Crisis City Classic is the best damn track in the game. I couldn't get enough of that.  Another really good one is "Modern" Carzy Gadget.  THis was in the lympics game, but since it and Generations came out at the same time, I consider all the remixes to be a giant package that was split acorss three games.  Factor that game in, you get Modern Crazy Gadget, Grand Metropolis, Bingo Highway, Windy Valley, Splash Hill, and the coup de grace, Flying Battery.  THAT is the best track in that olympics game IMO.  It's Angel Island brawl all over again.

As the midis totally doint count, I find all of the remixes superior to the originals.  I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I actually LIKE Modern Radical Highway and Tropical Resort, especially the latter.  Like Arid Sands day, it pumps me up and demands I get a S rank on that stage and school everyone in vs with it.

All in all, I actually preferred the 3DS remixes as opposed to the HD remixes. Tropical Resort Act 2, was really good, I liked the speed-up of the whole melody, and the kind of (to quote FTA) "surfer" remix over the whole track. Surprised noone mentioned the Special Stage which I thought was miles better than the original. I adore both Radical Highway remixes, along with Mushroom Hill Act 2, and I loved the Jazz Band Remix they did with Casino Night Act 2. Supporting Me, I just preferred because I could actually make out the vocals, Big Arms was AMAZING, and Egg Emperor I was indifferent to.

With the HD version, Chemical Plant Act 2 (as a lot of people have mentioned) was really good, Sky Sanctuary Act 2 I really love. And Crisis City Act 2 was wonderful. All of the boss remixes I enjoyed, especially Death Egg Robot, and although it's not really a remix I prefer Time Eater version II over version I. Oh, and I love all of the White Space Time remixes.

Might as well voice my general views on the 3DS tracks as well.  More of a mixed back with the mixes here.  Both Radical Highway tracks, Classic Tropical Resort, Classic Casino Night, Modern Water Palace and every boss track that isn't Metal Sonic sounds worse imo.  Modern Radical Highway in particular is the worst track in the game across both games.  Sounds like absolute crap.  Everything else holds up nicely though.  The Emerald Coast mixes in particular are awesome.  The guitar just hits so much harder and it's wonderful.

Is Modern the Cash Cash remix or the Circuit Freq. version? If it's the Cash Cash one I disagree completely. And what do you think of the Special Stage?

This track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3Jo9itVbqw

Sounds like some clusterfuck of electronic farts, bad synth and feeble beats.  As for the Special Stage, it fits into the "as good as the original" category.  Got that rave party feel to it.  Actually reminds me of a number of the ASRT tracks.

Let's see...

Stage themes:

Modern Green Hill is cool, but the boost version is better

Modern Chemical Plant is awesome. Probably better than the original, IMO.

Modern Sky Sanctuary is... decent. I guess.

Classic Speed Highway is sick. Modern mix is cool, but doesn't hold up to the Classic version or original.

Classic City Escape I should hate with a passion, but for some reason I love it. Modern City Escape is good. Just about as good as the original.

Classic Seaside Hill has been criticized as being bland, but I like it. I like Modern Seaside Hill partly because it throws in Ocean Palace.

Classic Crisis City is a sweet track, but the Modern Mix is even better. I really couldn't care about the original.

Classic Rooftop Run is a good track, but again, I prefer the Modern Mix. Moreso than the original even, because I can actually hear the bridge this time.

Classic Planet Wisp is... really? That's what they went with? That's what I thought when I first heard it playing the game. Knowing Tokoi's intentions doesn't make it any better. The Modern mix is... better, but still average. Also, it's not the bassline it lacks, but the serenity of the original.

Boss/Rival Themes:

I prefer the Generations mix of Stardust Speedway JP over the original, just because of the extra stuff added. The US mix by Cash Cash is cool, but not as good, and I was never a huge fan of the US Bad Future track anyway.

Death Egg Robot's theme is... eh. Never really took the time to listen to it outside of the game.

Big Arm has to be one of the best remixes in the game, and I think it can stand proudly next to the original.

The Open Your Heart remix is really good. Just as good as the original.

The For True Story mix has grown on me greatly, but its discordant, minimal D'n'B can never match the sick Jungle vibes of the original.

I prefer the Generations version of Supporting Me because 1) it sounds much fuller than the original; more dramatic and climactic, and 2) I can actually understand the lyrics.

Egg Dragoon and Silver's Rival theme: see Death Egg Robot.

I will say this about Silver's fight: I dislike how they took out the arp from the original track. I really liked that part.

Mission Themes:

The Gens mix of Emerald Beach is so much better than Battle's version. Seriously, the original sounds like garbage. Worst thing I've heard the GBA crap out, next to the Sonic Genesis soundtrack.

The Balloon Park remix is decent. Though, coming from Senoue, I expected more guitars.

The Super Sonic Racing mix is... okay. Just okay.

Oh yeah, while I'm on the SSR remix:

Seriously, why did they replace good singing in the original with auto tune crap?

VOCODER.

EDIT: Forgot some of the 3DS tracks.

Modern Casino Night is so yummy. Seriously, Atsushi Kosuga (sp?) nailed the 1920s Jazz sound.

Modern Mushroom Hill is... not bad, I guess. Not a huge of the guitars, though.

Classic Emerald coast is just the OST version of Azure Blue World. Modern Emerald Coast is just the OST version of Windy and Ripply. Next.

Classic Radical Highway is amazing. Modern is... while I still think it sounds like music, unlike 100% of the fanbase, I still don't like it. Basically, Classic > Original > Modern.

Classic Water Palace = OST version of Back 2 Back. Great job, guys. Thankfully, Cash Cash came through with the Modern remix, in which they opted for a retro 60's sound rather than fast Big Beat breaks.

Classic Tropical Resort = original. Seriously, Dimps? I initially hated the Modern remix, but it's really grown on me.

The Sonic Heroes Special Stage remix is very good, but it's certainly less busy than the original.

Also, the Door Into Summer remix is appreciated, but the original is better.

Thanks for catching that vocoder thing!

Also, let me just say that the remix of Death Egg Robot is the ultimate Eggman battle theme in my opinion. Something about it is... you know. The instrumentation, the steady progression... everything!

The credits remixes of some of the songs. Oh God, I love them so much(Tropical Resort, Crisis City, Water Palace, Radical Highway, Speed Highway, Planet Wisp, City Escape, and Emerald Coast.) I can't get enough of them.

While I wouldn't say any of them are bad, the ones that for the most part replace the arrangement with growling bass and drum breaks are lost on me. One of my favorites is easily classic sky sanctuary, represents the fast pace of 'moving through the sky' rather well.

Yeah, the classic remix and modern are actually some of my favorite remixes from this game, I think they surpass the original planet wisp pretty well and I think of it this way where the original planet wisp was slower paced because the level itself wasn't too fast paced (as with the rest of the game) and it fit perfectly for that but the classic and modern ones fit there respective stages because they were a bit more upbeat and went with the speed well.

VOCODER.

Apologies for my mistake.

I'll still take TJ Davis over Cash Cash anyday.
