The stars are just there to signify that he's doing parkour/actions when holding the run button.

Gotta admit, I've never been a handheld gamer, but that 3DS version is looking really nice.  I was planning on getting a 3DS for a few other games, so it looks like I can add another to that list.  Still plan on getting a WiiU as well for this and few others as well, too.

Really not digging the "flat" look. I wouldn't call Unleashed or Generations "cluttered" or "messy" at all; just more detailed, and I like that quite a bit more, personally. Gives the environment more life in my opinion.

 

Say what you will about it being cluttered, but this is nothing short of gorgeous, if you ask me. My jaw dropped the first time I played through this level.

 

 

Obviously it's all a matter of opinion, but as far as what's aesthetically pleasing to me, I far prefer the style Unleashed, Colors, and Generations had going over this more flat, basic style.

I'm not going to pick favourites between Unleashed/Gens visuals and Lost World, because frankly I think both are absolutely brilliant. One thing that really, realy sticks out to me as brilliant in Lost World's style though is the colour. Generations was brightly coloured in a realistic way, but Lost World is brightly coloured in a totally different manner.

 

Look at that. Everything in LW is bursting with colour. Everything is richer and bolder for more outlandish style. Generations focused on being as technically impressive with the visuals as possible, and it certainly didn't fail to deliver if you played it on a high end PC (sans a few low res textures). LW is eye catching in a different way. Like I said, I do really enjoy both. But I just think that LW's style is more sustainable- cheaper and easier to produce, just as gorgeous. It speaks volumes about the overall nature of the game and series too.

Combine that with Generations larger, denser, lusher environments, I think we'll have a winner. Lost Worlds, looks great, but as I've mentioned previously, the disconnected stages bug me. I wouldn't mind seeing this art style blended into a level, which is more cohesively integrated into the landscape.

Unleashed/Colors/Generations focused on making gorgeous backgrounds at the cost of making 90% of all visuals inaccessable and off in the distance. Lost World on the other hand seems to be going for the complete inverse from what we've seen so far: lack of focus on detailed backgrounds with more emphasis on interesting setpieces with which the player can directly interact.

I'll take the latter for being a perfect translation of iconic Sonic visuals from 2D to 3D, much in the same way that Mario did with Galaxy and 3D Land. Somehow, Sega has made the classic aesthetics in this game look far much more natural and pretty in 3D than they ever did in Heroes or Generations.

Sure is a good thing SMG is widely-touted as one of the greatest games ever made and generally considered the best platformer of all time, because Sonic taking cues from shit like Devil May Cry and Halo weren't really getting him anywhere.

There's also that weird and totally out of place thing (I don't know what it's called. It's the white slightly transparent thing that looks like an explosion) underneath Sonic. I can honestly see that getting pretty distracting during gameplay, along with the pink and blue stars and the white puffs of cloud that seem to appear whenever Sonic runs.

The highly detailed backgrounds of Generations may not affect gameplay but they definitely enhance the overall experience, otherwise we wouldn't have backgrounds at all. Yeah, gameplay is king but we can't pretend that visuals don't play a part in bringing the experience to life. I'm currently focusing on visuals because when watching a trailer or (especially) looking at screenshots, graphics are my first (or even only) impression of the game. I can say "the gameplay looks like it might be cool", but since I'm not actually playing it I don't have enough info to focus on it.
