So SEGA's decided to hold another skating event after their last one back in 2011 was a success. It's "Sonic Generations of Skate Presented by Sonic Lost World." Same formula as before, with a bunch of pro skaters engaging in a competition... with some Sonic games and a guy in a Sonic costume walking around. The winner gets a Sonic-themed board I guess.

Basic recap of the 2011 event here:

I admit I do kind of want to hop in my car and go attend it since it's on June 1st. While part of me is ready to kneejerk and say this is a case of the "slap Sonic's face on non-Sonic stuff" syndrome, I will say it's diabolical marketing. It helps create brand awareness by putting Sonic in something recognisable - see the success enjoyed with Mario in the Olympics titles.

Now, for them to get on their game and announce Sonic Boom and Summer of Sonic. With the string of news we've been getting this last week it has to be soon.

That looks very funny. I've always thought that skating was silly. I think they've announced it a bit too late though.

It does seem weird they kept the Sonic Generations theme... but on the other hand, they keep saying it has multiple generations of skaters, so it's just a minor cashin.

If nothing else SEGA having a huge role in the 7th Skating event as they did in the 5th will help marketing.

There's one thing that does perplex me, however. The blog states that "Sonic Generations of Skate will air nationally on FOX Sports Net (FSN) beginning on November 29 at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m." I thought this was a one-time event... so why on Earth would they show a recording of it several months afterward? Am I missing something here?

I think it's because of two reasons. The first one is obvious, since Sonic Lost World is coming out in November, it makes sense that this event will be shown to promote the game. This is why it says that it's powered by Sonic Lost World. The first Generations of Skate did the same thing. The second one might be that Sega might want to make this a regular event, maybe not yearly, but doing from time to time. I used to skate so I know a lot people that actually enjoyed this event, so maybe it was considered a success. Plus, I really don't think that they announced it late since this time they don't have activities for the fans. They have that cancer charity thing going on but since there's a lot of foot traffic in that particular part of San Diego I think a lot of people are going to attend regardless.

You're silly for thinking skating is silly.
