Donkey Kong is BACK
and looking better then ever!

and now DIXIE KONG is joining in on the fun!

It's coming out later this year!

During its pre-E3 Nintendo Direct today, Nintendo revealed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Wii U.

Nintendo has confirmed to IGN that the title is developed by Retro Studios (developers of Metroid Prime as well as Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii) and tells the story of animal Vikings invading Donkey Kong Island.

Viking enemies shown off so far include walruses, owls, and penguins who use crossbows loaded with frozen fish.

Tropical Freeze features 2D side-scrolling (much like Donkey Kong Country Returns) but adds new dynamic camera angles that were shown off in its debut footage. The game also features the return of Dixie Kong.

HYPE

After Mario kinda underwhelmed me I was feeling disappoint...

BUT THEN HERE COMES THE KONGSTER TO MAKE IT ALL BETTER

Still, Vikings instead of the Krems? C'mon, Ninty, what's your deal?

But the Vikings look pretty cool so WHATEVER

And then BAM DIXIE KONG

Yeah, Ninty just sold me a Wii U.

OH AND THERE'S SWIMMING NOW THAT'S PRETTY COOL

Looks amazing, and I'm super excited, but one thing bugs me...

It appears Diddy is STILL a glorified Animal Buddy in single player, and looks the same for Dixie. I wanna play them in single player :(

God damn this game looks gorgeous. And I'm especially in love with the ice levels. Scenery porn to the max.

Donkey Kong being Retro's game has pissed me off something awful. It isn't needed, we just had a DK game, but F-Zero, Metroid, Wave Race and others haven't had new games in years.

Dixie is my favorite Kong, so her returning is awesome. Water is also back. The vikings are better than the Tikis but they're o Kremlings. I hope you can play Diddy and Dixie seperately this time.

I'm very disappointed that Retro didn't give us a new Star Fox, Metroid, or F-Zero.  VERY disappointed.

But if I can get over that, this looks great.  DKCR was fantastic, and this looks just as good.  Dixie coming back is cool, and the new enemies look way cooler than the Tikis.

So yeah, I'm a bit upset, but still looking forward to it.

Please let us play a game without Donkey Kong this time. My sister and I will want to team up as Diddy and Dixie.

A sequel to the best platformer on the Wii? Dixie? Take all of my money! Not disappointed at all, can't wait!

These Vikings actually really remind me of Rareware villains. They're no Kremlings but they do look like better successors than the Tikis. Also gotta love dat Donkey and Diddy animation, so much charm and character.

Am I the only one who thinks the title sounds like an Ice Age movie?

Though on a serious note, this looks amazing. Get hype.

Sounds more like a Slurpee flavor to me.

Shit, fuck, goddamn, why do the have to be making this awesome looking game rather than a different game?!

Yeah no I'm happy with this. DKCR was a spectacular game and this looks like a solid sequel.

what the fuck is wave race

I just realized, this is the first time you can play with Donkey & Dixe in the same game. Praise Jesus.

As long as Retro gets around to fixing Metroid soon, I'm fine.

This looks pretty cool, though.  Never been a DK fan, but I may pick this up.

This looks even better than the original (impressive when the original was dam good) and the additions of swimming, more camera paning, and Dixi Kong are awesome.

I thinking, maybe Retro has two studios and have one of them (with help from Monster Games) make this and the other making the reboot/sequel to F-Zero, Metroid, ect. we want.

This announcement suddenly makes it clear why they released DKCR on 3DS this year.

Nintendo, you cheeky monkeys, you.

Yeah, Dixie's back!

I hope were seeing the other Kongs return too (Candy, Funky, Chunky, Lanky, etc) in bonus style games.

Also, with Swimming back, Bring me Enguard the Swordfish.

I take this as confirmation exactly what we didn't want.

*Donkey/Diddy, Donkey/Dixie

Damn...

No way to play as Diddy/Dixie would just be uuuuuugh. Tho I did enjoy how Diddy was used in the original. Reminded me of Banjo.

A fantastic-looking game being written off essentially because it exists ("Why Donkey Kong and not [insert other franchise]?! Fuck this!") makes me really sad. I waited years for the Country series to get kick-started again and I wasn't just going to settle for one single installment and then abandonment. Why would anyone do this? It's a beloved series, a high-selling series, and has been consistently excellent. This isn't an endorsement of the treatment of Star Fox, Metroid, F-Zero and others, but if anything, Nintendo themselves at this point really need to get back in gear and start taking chances on the beloved IPs they do own. These are their series, not Retro's; they have significantly more capital to do so, and frankly considering the Wii U's performance, it wouldn't hurt one bit to finally take the plunge themselves. Overall, these games are not Retro's responsibility, so why curse them or the game for what is essentially Nintendo's apathy? :/

Also, I just had a thought: Anyone thinking that with Dixie and a sea-faring enemy returning, we'll see more throwbacks to Donkey Kong Country 2? I feel like Returns played on a lot of aesthetic ideas and nostalgic easter eggs from the first game, so could we perhaps hear some music or see some familiar levels from DKC2? I would so love for them to do that- it's my favorite installment in the series.

This looks amazing! It's strange the Kremlins are still not back but who cares? It's a new DKC!

I agree with Nep. The negative response this is getting from most people is really sad. I'm happy they're making a sequel as the small amount I played of DKCR (I rented it) was amazing and super challenging. We need more games like it! Also, the return of Dixie Kong is awesome. Now I just want them to have Diddy/Dixie playable together. =P

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this and will buy it as soon as it comes out!
