How'd I not see this? Need to check this area more!

 

I'm most digging the ability to destroy objects and suck them into himself as a sort of barrier that can be used for attack and defense... what I find most epic is he can use it to destroy even the minibosses like the giant caterkillers.

 

Well, medium caterkillers since it seems they have quite a variety in sizes!

Given that Sonic games are ultimately meant for a young audience we can't really say it'd be surprising if this was in fact the plot.
