What happened right after the events of Tikal in SA?

It's only really in the more recent eras that teenage pregnancy was frowned upon. Quite a few ancient civilisations would bear kids young as it is generally safer and easier to have kids younger (although that is from about the age of 16-18) so it is a possibility, although I doubt Tikal had any children, if she had I'm sure we would have seen them (in a lot of ancient civilisations the mothers/women would do the baby stuff)

Come to think of it though, that cutscene with the mural makes complete sense!

Chaos is wounded on-board the Egg Carrier and loses 6 Chaos Emeralds it had. It finds it's way off the Carrier after it crashes and retreats to the pools surrounding the path leading directly up to the mural in Lost World. It possibly thinks that Sonic is the one that has the six emeralds that it dropped when it was attacked on-board the Egg Carrier, hence why it's watching him during that cutscene (The water ripple indicates Chaos' presence).

When it garners that Sonic does not have the Emeralds that it wants in order to finish it's work, it slithers out of the temple and encounters Eggman at the beginning of Super Sonic's story and then attacks him. It then uses any control it has over the Emeralds to make Angel Island fall into the sea. Then it finds it's way onto Angel Island in order to get at the Master Emerald shrine because Knuckles was the last one that fought it and therefore is another person who logically has the Emeralds. It attacks him and steals them.

Chaos then spies on Sonic AGAIN to see where he's going to locate the seventh emerald, hence why the seventh emerald is only stolen a second before Sonic reaches it.

Chaos was observing everything and logically making use of information to further it's own plan for revenge. Never really noticed that before.

EDIT:

I now do think that Chaos have the power to transfer his mind to any kind of water, so he's literally everywhere!

He was probably watching Sonic taking a bath in Casinopolis, he was the shower's water!

Yeah, as others have stated, the further back in time you go, the more common teen pregnancies are.  The Industrial Evolution is one of many factors that made it socially unacceptable due to the longer and generally healthier lifespan than those prior to the evolution.  Still, even if it is more historically accurate, I don't see it as something Sega would touch upon with the intent of targeting it towards children.

But then, they touched upon Gamma's struggle with understanding the value of life and self-sacrifice for the benefit of others in a surprisingly grim manner, so... you know, I wouldn't rule it out, either.

I think we have the series baddie everyone :P

But my god your right! I never really put much thought into stuff like that but it all does make perfect sense, it's like when Eggman had Chaos hiding in he water in the mystic Ruins lake for Sonic and Knuckles to fight

Ha, maybe Chaos even used Eggman's swimming pool as a place to hang-out during the time the Egg Carrier's in the air and the pool being emptied when a character clears the Sky Deck is a possible indication that it's out and about, ready to be encountered on the engine part of the ship.

WHAT IF HE'S IN THE POOL IN THE STATION SQUARE HOTEL?  OR WHAT IF HE'S THE ENTIRE OCEAN IN EMERALD COAST?

Real talk: Wow!  I never thought of it that way!  I may have to play SA1 again and see how this affects my understanding of it.

I'd have thought that Chaos was waiting in the water surrounding Big's hut where the Tornado 2 is crashed when Sonic and Tails look for the Tornado 2 but then this doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you consider that Chaos didn't need to freakin' wait or anything, he could've just taken the emerald there and then upon discovering it.

...Unless he was WAITING ON PURPOSE inside that water surrounding Big's hut so he could....rub his taking of the final emerald right in Sonic's face by taking it a second before Sonic reaches it.

Wow. Chaos is a troll.

I honestly took it to mean that Chaos just happened to find the Emerald just before Sonic and Tails and his abrupt water explosion thing was just his way of getting to it before Sonic could.  It does make me wonder where in the world Big was during this whole thing, but I guess you can justify it with just about anything.  (And also, I don't really care since, you know, he's Big)

Don't forget there is some water he couldn't be in, otherwise he would have gotten his tail back from Froggy much sooner :P

In that note though I wonder if the amount of emeralds he has is linked to the amount of water, because he gets bigger as each emerald is "fed" to him, so if say he has the master emerald could he manipulate an ocean into a form.

That's another question actually is chaos' water actual actual water and the bits that are chaos are the brain and eyes and stuff of is all of him a special water substance thing?

That reminds me.  I'm not sure if I just didn't understand or if the games failed to explain it properly, but I really don't understand what was with the whole Froggy and Chaos' tail thing.  From what I understood of it, Froggy swallowed a Chaos Emerald with Chaos' "data," therefore he grew a tail?  I'm sorry but I really do not understand where that was going.

(Also, feel free to take "data" in quotations completely out of context)

Froggy came across Chaos first then ate Big's yellow Emerald. Chaos using a part of itself to 'possess' Froggy was likely a means as to get it's hands on the yellow emerald.

The possession is outright stated by Eggman; "That frog is possessed by your tail!"

Ah, so it was possession, not a mishap.  Okay, that makes sense now.  I've been missing that detail for over fourteen years now.  That's kind of incredible.

It just goes to show that Chaos had a more.... 'complex' idea regarding the seeking of emeralds than what Eggman did....

Even though there's not a whole lot of reason as to why Chaos couldn't have taken the yellow emerald there and then without resorting to possessing a frog of all things to deliver it to it....

Maybe that 3000 year imprisonment scrambled Chaos' brain?

I always thought he and Tikal were effectively frozen throughout those 3000 years, so any idiocy by Chaos was due to him still being in the same literal momentaneous rage he was in when Pachacamac trampled the Chao?

Well, perhaps it was a way of making Eggman think he was in control.  Like, throughout most of the game, Chaos pretty much allows himself to be Eggman's pawn, then out of nowhere he betrays them and goes on a rampage!  He probably relied on Eggman to deliver the Chaos Emeralds to him, and if he showed that kind of independence, he would probably have to rely on his own means to obtain them.

When you think about it there is a lot of mysteries surrounding each characters backgrounds. There are things that we don't even know about Sonic like who his family is and why he runs fast. But Knuckles is a character with the most unanswered questions surrounding him. However clues about Knuckles past is found in the oddest place, the vocal song dedicated to him called "Unknown from M.E", in Sonic Adventure. I'll quote parts of the song so you know what I mean:

" Born on an island, in the heavens

Blood of my ancestors flows inside me

My duty is to save the flower

                                                 From evil deterioration.

                                                  Streaking light, sounds and instinct

are the elements that keep me going

I am fighting my own mission

Nothings gonna stand in my way.

Get this power to wipe out the havoc and anarchy

This is my planet gonna fight for my destiny.

Freedom is waiting when serenity is restored.

I was born by myself, I don't need a posse, Adversaries get shelved."

What I gathered from this is that knuckles was born on angel island, the last of the echidnas. He protects the master emerald until the havoc of chaos unleashed by his ancestors (not just chaos the monster, but all the bad forces in the world) is destroyed and peace is restored. He is passionate about this mission and plans to accomplish it on his own.

Well, that makes no sense. By your interpretation his mission is either to counter what Chaos did (which has long since been done) or stop all possible evil (which is impossible).

I took it more as his mission is to guard the emerald until all evil is gone, so probably his whole life

True, my thesis is grasping at straws a bit since the person who wrote the song probably was not a part of the story writing. In the end, our questions about the characters in the Sonic games might not never be answered. But that might be a part of their charm. I mean its kind of a running theme of many popular characters to not know everything about them.

It definitely makes room for Fan Speculation :)

Also worth noting is the... frankly quite nonsensical translation of the Chaotix manual, JP version, which seems to hint that the Master Emerald was creating portals to it, which made it a strategic weakpoint, so "the gods" lifted it to the skies to cut the connection, leading to the giant rings in S3K, and the Chaos Rings in Chaotix, created when the giant rings on that Island (that apparently sinked at the same time as the Floating Island... floated) try to connect to the Master Emerald but instead connection is severed, looping the ME's energy.

Or something.
