Mass Internet censorship to go live in the UK

Edit:

July 25th.

Not just porn. It also blocks Web forums as well as a ton of other stuff.

======

So with the royal baby due any moment now, this isn't really getting the attention it deserves.

Basically, Prime Minister David Cameon has decided that porn and adult content on the internet is to be blocked by default here in the UK unless households decide to 'opt in.'

The reasoning for it is as follows.

"Children might find it"

... ... .... Because the internet has porn on it, and children use it, children might find porn, so now it's going to be blocked to every single person in the UK unless they sign a form or agree with their ISP to recieve it.

Or to put it another way.

The UK government has decided to censor the internet.

Now before people think 'somebody is mad they're not getting the porn'. This isn't just going to affect porn. It will affect ANYTHING that is considered 'not family friendly.'

Every computer user who uses an ISP (so basically everybody with the internet) will recieve what is being called the 'family friendly filter,' You have to then say that you want to 'opt in' to recieve adult content.

If you decide to ignore the letter/whatever it's going to be... the system will turn on your family filter by default.

This will mean that anything which is considered 'adult' will be filtered. That doesn't just cover porn, anything that could be considered non family friendly might be affected by this scheme.

Medical websites could be affected, especially ones which help you how to check for possible early signs of cancer, you know where I'm going with this one. Sites which just talk about 'adult' stuff as apposed to post pics and videos of said content.

Then theres the issue of content that isn't sexually explicit but is not family friendly. Lets think for a second, what do we talk about on here a lot which is often aimed at adults, sometimes has sexual inudendo and often contains imagery which isn't family friendly... Oh yeah... videogames! Is that gonna fall under it? what about 16+ movies? Will that fall under it too?

Just because the politicians are saying 'it's for porn' doesn't mean it's just blocking porn, the filters are 'family friendly filters' so whoever is sat in an office who is judging this by their own morral code will be deciding what is and what isn't family friendly.

In fact just take a look at page 1 of SSMB's videogame forum, how many of those games are not family friendly?

Why is this being done? Well... here is the exact quote...

"I want to talk about the internet, the impact it is having on the innocence of our children, how online pornography is corroding childhood. [...] "And how, in the darkest corners of the internet, there are things going on that are a direct danger to our children, and that must be stamped out. [...] I'm not making this speech because I want to moralise or scaremonger, but because I feel profoundly as a politician, and as a father, that the time for action has come. This is, quite simply, about how we protect our children and their innocence"

Because some parents don't have a clue what they're doing or frankly don't want to deal with the computer and the internet, because some parents don't bother getting software like cyber nanny or any other of the hundreds of the other family filter softwares which are already out, they're censoring every internet user unless they 'opt in' to get adult content.

Now again, whilst the rhetoric is 'pornography' the politicians will be saying that word because it goes down well with voters and more people are likely to agree with it. You think it's not deliberate that he made this speech surrounded by various people from the NSPCC? Remember, the filters are described as 'family friendly' meaning that anything which is considered unsafe for children will effectively be blocked by default.

P.S. This is all to go live before the end of the year.

P.P.S Depending on your ISP. Your family friendly filter is a piece of software that is installed directly onto your system. So even if you don't want adult content, your system now has some random software installed onto your machine. Have fun with that one.

People are aware that something called "parental controls" have existed for years now, right? Believe me, if my Dad of all people was capable of setting up internet restrictions when I was a kid, then anybody should be able to do it.

So this will pretty much negatively affect anyone with a large reliance on internet for research or work. Way to fuckin go government!

But at the same time, shouldn't it be pretty easy to "opt in"? You don't need to say "I'm opting in because I want to look at porn" if the bloody program is outright preventing you from working or researching. Hopefully opting in is as simple as saying "my profession requires access to things that may not be child-friendly".

It depends.

The most backwards part about all of this is, the family filters are not being made law, it's being made a voluntary thing, only around 90% of ISP's have signed up to it. So due to that it depends on individual ISP's as to how they implament them.

Some it's gonna be 'Ring them up and say, get that filter off'

Some it's gonna be 'Here is the software, install it to your system.' (Can't see anything going wrong with this one!).

Some it's gonna be 'fill out this form and then wait...'

One step closer to China's internet model UK. Need some strong ass opposition for this.

Break out the petitions and lobbyists. Hammer this shit out, before it starts to affect internet freedom.

Was thinking of making a topic for this myself. This whole thing is a mess. Like you said, people are laughing about this saying that people who are against it just want porn but it's about more than that. It's about the government denying you access to content that should be free for all and it opens up a worrying set of possibilities for the future, adult only sites go, then what's next? Anti-government websites? Websites discussing religion? It's not that hard to imagine this going further than simply blocking porn.

Even if it doesn't though, should we really have to add our names to a government list so we can look at adult content? What will be done with this list anyway? Is it possible that this could be used as evidence down the line? "so and so is accused of molesting so and so, he/she is also on the list of adult content subscribers".

Also, not trying to be funny here.....but have you ever used a computer network with "adult content" filters? They're a fucking joke, my local library wouldn't let be do a google search for the Enola Gay, no joke. It blocked the SonicStadium main page because it contained "Adult Material". Now I'm assuming that a government installed block would be less stupid (right?) but it's still going to make mistakes and block access to content that has nothing to do with adult themes.

As for the "kids might see vaginas" line, why the fuck is it the duty or our government to stop this? And why should the whole population be forced into this against their will because parents are either too lazy or ignorant to protect their children from finding pornogrpahy themselves.

Apparently lots of parents have said "Well, we don't know how to install child safety blocks" well.....

3oymz5.jpg

It's not the governments job, it's your job and we're all going to have to put up with this shit because you're too stupid to raise your own kids.

Alsooooooooooooooooooooooo, if todays Wright Stuff is to be believed, the people who are in favour of this are just fucking idiots....

"I don't understand why these people should be allowed to sign up for this anyway, we should make child pornography illegal full stop"

....wait what? You can't even argue with idiocy like this.....

"Without changing what you will be offering (ie active-choice +), the prime minister would like to be able to refer to your solutions are 'default-on' as people will have to make a choice not to have the filters (by unticking the box)."

"Update: In his speech, Cameron detailed how the initiative would be applied to existing customers. "Following the work we’ve already done with the service providers, they have now agreed to take a big step," Cameron said. "By the end of next year, they will have contacted all of their existing customers and presented them with an unavoidable decision about whether or not to install family friendly content filters." Claire Perry, Tory Minister of Parliament and Cameron's adviser on the matter, told the BBC that existing customers who do not inform ISPs of their decision will have the "family-friendly filters" implemented automatically."

Sounds easy enough to opt-in if you're signing up or if you're an existing customer. I don't think this is right, though.

So...people who don't understand the internet are making rules to make other people who don't understand the internet self-righteous and happy.

Typical.

You're serious. That's the picture they are going with.

That's the most fucking pretentious thing I've ever seen.

Take a look at the site I've linked it from

I heard on the TV that the government were going to make it so that you specifically had to opt in to all pornography and I thought they were just going to crack-down on sites you didn't have to register for and child porn, they didn't make it clear what exactly was going to happen...

They say this isn't about moralizing or scare-mongering but it is, because they're using the cliché arguments against pornography, but I honestly don't think there are any arguments to support this that aren't tired and long-debunked.

Does this mean I can't search "Big Cocks" in google image search any more on my friend's computer without having the FBI break down their door with a S.W.A.T team and taking him for doing a "No-No"?

I wonder what this means for sites or stores like iTunes,or YouTube or even Netflix. I mean those things already have age censors.
