SEGA sample origin discovery thread "Finding the DNA of SEGA's music since summer of 2013!"

I think it's more along the lines of "Trish the track attacker, we grab a mic, I smack a spectator, kidnapper". Or something like that at least :P But yeah, spot on.

Which sucks because I've had a Masterbits sample pack with that rap for years and never noticed...

Listening to it again, yeah, what I thought the second "tracker" was does sound more like "attacker". So, I'm gonna lay the final word, I think that famous opening use of it is...

"Track a-track a- we grab a mic, I smack-spec". Something along that.

Also a quick note, the background "UNH" from Get Edgy (Altitude Limit's theme) can be found in the same sample pack's percussion folder. Very first file.

Bump.

I thought this moment would never, ever come... but it has.

Ethno Circus, the theme of Mirage Road.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePg2uZfmRV8

We've known for ages that the intro "dun de dun dun de dun dun dun dun" is sampled from The It's Donnie and the high pitched "UGH!" can be found in its original pitch in many sample packs, including Norman Cook's Skip To My Loops. There has, however, been one unfolded mystery... one about taco meat and mask smackers.

Of course, I'm talking about the infamous "taco taco meat smacks a mask on my face" (or whatever it is this week) sample.

It's from a rap. By a woman.

Said rap is a 2 minute sample on Masterbits' Add Lips sample pack, done by a woman with an extremely vulgar vocab-- some lyrics even include lines like "I put a saddle on your back n' ride that ass".

Trimming it down though, we have our awaited sample. "Trip the cracker-cracker, we grab a macka-smacker, spectate a kidnapper."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJFm-ZLfyh8

Increasing the pitch by 25% and cutting the lyrics to fit exactly to the compressed samples in the Sonic Rush ROM, I was able to make a mockup of the vocals-- without the instrumentation. The "UGH" from Skip To My Loops was kept in for consistency.

Make what you will of this. I'm pretty sure this is the origin of this rap and I'm 100% certain Naganuma sampled from it.

Well done, my friend.

  • 2 months later...

So I'm probably infamous for never shutting up about a certain sample search of mine that's been going on for four months now, so I'll stick it in here and turn this thread into a generic Naganuma thread.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSZIej-ZraE

Yeah, we all know this song. Come on, it's the first one to play when you get into JSRF's actual gameplay.

So what sample in particular am I looking at? Those main lead vocals.

"High n' a winner, pay the frontline, take the don'ts!

He's comin' out again fo' a new point!

Four four's the point, mark four!

Who wants the hard four? Five wants four.

Ace-deuce craps wants four!

Four n' he made it the hard way!

Pay the frontline, take the hard.

We have a shooter n' a good'un, comin' out fo' a new point!

Get your bets down, ladies n' gentlemen!

He's a-rollin'... point is nine, place nine!

Eight, shootin' fo' nine, five, shootin' fo' nine!

Who wants to become? Got a hot hand!

Place your bets, ladies n' gentlemen! Six to point, place six..."

THAT sample.

Before anyone thinks of the slightest hint of it being in-house, it mostly certainly isn't. Why? Because this song isn't alone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK_Hnj-LuLA

^ Skip to 0:20 on this song, "boots", composed by Nobuyoshi Sano.

^ Skip to 8:09 on this song, "Home", composed by Dream Theater.

https://app.box.com/s/3xi28zqtpthbzbyaut2h

^ An excerpt of "Timequake", by Sonus Umbra.

This is a total of 5 known uses I am aware of, all by completely different composers. I've been hunting for this thing for 4 months running now... so I figured it was time to get some actual direction.

4sN8nu2.png

Above is me asking Naganuma which sample CDs he used for JSRF's compositions-- however, it turns out they were all off his hard drive and he doesn't grasp each CD's name... so that's out of the list.

VnWQQos.png

Above is me asking Nobuyoshi Sano if he recalls where the sample came from. He states it as being from Sound Ideas' series 3000 library, which, when looking into it I found simply a bunch of ambience SFX, no trace of this sample in particular.

Why am I still hunting for this thing, 4 months in? Because I don't believe an audio sample can vanish off the Earth like this. Early assumptions of its origin have pointed towards Masterbits' Rapsody sample library, which I have looked into to no avail (however found other goodies like Let It Go's "lyrical paragraph" rap, Ska Cha Cha's "start the machine", Get Edgy's "won't get beat" and many others)-- and others, arguably, the majority point towards an old audio tape/radio reading of the 1958 mystery novel No House Limit

However after looking into No House Limit... no radio reading or audiotape seems to exist, and gambling lingo is very similar throughout media-- I think it was a simple slip-up by making too much of an assumption.

I've tweeted to Mark & Brian, currently awaiting a reply and meanwhile that, I thought... might as well open up about my search here. If anyone wants to help, go right ahead.

Exactly how did you come across this Masterbits Rapsody pack? I've just tried looking for it and I can't even find a priced download.

Honestly, it's a matter of finding out what manufacturers Naganuma leans towards most with his sample packs. This one, for example, is by Zero-G, who have released a lot of other sample packs, one including "let's look at the funk", "this is most disturbing", "you make me feel so good", etc. It's challenging as well to work out which packs contain which samples, which is really what keeps me going through all this.

Also downloaded Timequake earlier today and have its full excerpt of the dealer sample. It uses the exact same one as Mark & Brian, the spacing, the lines, everything, just less laughter and more annoying grandfather clocks.

Above is me attempting to recreate its main limelight in Jet Set Radio's That's Enough and I can confirm it's the same sample.

Sample comes from the Zero-G Dance Vocals library, under the name "The funky rhythm... 2" in the tracklist PDF.

You are a sample god, Spindash. I'm surprised at how well you're able to find the origins of all these awesome songs by Hideki Naganuma. Let it be known once again that a song we thought was song by a woman, was in fact a man. Thanks for doing this, it really shows how brilliant Mr. Naganuma is as a composer/sampler.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT A CYPRESS HILL SAMPLE?! ;_;

I think the "funky rhythm" sample appears unaltered-ish in the S&AST remix of That's Enough.

THIRTY-ONE SECONDS N' WE'RE GONE FOR AUTOSEQUENCE START!

(Hope you took birth control~!)

Famous for its constant use throughout Ollie King's Boarder 70 track. Also appears in the Somethin' Jazzy For Your Mind remix.

Here we go now, on the offense!

Probably one of Naganuma's most modified and underlooked samples, this one is used in Jet Set Radio Future's Shape Da Future. Unbelievably enough, it comes from the same voice as the thirty-one seconds countdown.

~

https://app.box.com/s/qeyshc8y430rwv59q0ye

Look... to the future!

Also notable for its use in Jet Set Radio Future's Shape Da Future, this one in particular is the song's chorus of sorts... not much to say, really.

~

https://app.box.com/s/t9p0wuuwv8e2m5mxtjgi

And you're ready to float!

Used a few select times in Jet Set Radio Future's Fly Like A Butterfly. Honestly, this was one of the samples I'd never expect to find ever, so this was a very nice surprise.

Free boy, free girl... especially free love!

Famous for its use in JSRF's The Concept of Love, this sample is actually quite heavily chopped up. Also combined with a "What is love" sample from Zero-G Datafiles.

Layin' the wax n' spittin' the sounds, for you...

This one actually isn't Naganuma, but it's still very notable in the Sonic series for its use in SA1's Chao Race Entrance theme. I actually also have the "HIP-HOP, HOUSE, TECHNO" samples from this song too, but they're in a different pack and I can't remember which one for the life of me... gonna have to go digging for them later.

All samples listed in this post are from the Polestar Magnetics XL1 library.

Heeeeeeeey, Spinny finds something he was starting to believe was made in-house!

Are you riding on, SSMB?

https://app.box.com/s/cdjbtaxxiu22s1w63yh9

"RIGHT THERE!"

Famous for its use in Sonic Rush's Right There, Ride On, I was really starting to question the lack of samples from this song in every pack I've ran into until here! Is heard in the Sound Ideas Network Sound Effects library audio demo at just over 1 minute in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ltckryVLrTg#t=71

It appears Naganuma turned the sample up in pitch by 4 octaves. It's also pretty likely "RIDE ON" is in this pack too considering that sample seems to be of a crowd. If that's the case I'll update this post and announce the edit in a status update or something.

So I was googling around for Funky Dealer's vocals' origins, like usual these days. Little did I expect... I come across not one, but two uses.

http://origin.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/onairhighlights/thai-casino-plan-provoke

This use is a 2008 Australian radio skit about casinos in Thailand. "Place yer bets, ladies n' gentlemen" can be heard at the intro to the clip, whilst "get yer bets down, ladies n' gentlemen" can be heard at the end.

Due to the funky synths, I assumed that this was actually a song that Radio Australia sampled. Shazaming the clip, I didn't find this exact song, however, I did get pointed to...

https://app.box.com/s/2tq2gyg429afokb5vd0f

Alex Maragos' Play Six ~Original Mix~.

The track appears to use the entire sample apart from "Pay the front line, take the don'ts". Hell, even "got a hot hand" and "six, the point" are here.

Each day, I can't help but feel like I'm closing up on that sample more and more.

Aight, so you know that drum fill that plays at the start of Ska Cha Cha?

I think I found its source:

I am fairly certain that this is where that drum fill comes from. I know that Boney M can't be using a sample pack because 1) the bongos continue throughout the song, and 2) it was released too early; I don't think sample packs were being made yet.

Anyway, decide for yourself.

EDIT: It's even clearer in the CD version.

So I suppose I should update with this!

- The "wapped in bwak" whispers from Wrapped in Black

It sounds like the "won't get beat" sample is the same voice as the BB sample.
